If you mean the flying activity in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, Nintendo calls it Prop Plane. The only flight control confirmed in Nintendo’s pre-release information is to tilt the controller to fly around Wuhu Island. Nintendo has not yet published a direction-by-direction control map, button assignments, calibration instructions, or a confirmed beginner technique. The game is scheduled exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22, 2026, so treat any more specific control advice as unverified until the game and its in-game prompts are available.
What “flying mode” means in Nintendo Switch Sports
The phrase “flying mode” can be misleading because the original Nintendo Switch Sports does not have a documented activity with that name in the material Nintendo has published for this guide. The relevant activity is Prop Plane in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, a Nintendo Switch 2 game. Nintendo describes Prop Plane as flight around Wuhu Island and says players can “tilt the controller to fly around freely in Prop Plane.”

Release timing and what is actually confirmed
Nintendo announced October 22, 2026 as the release date. The official announcement is dated June 12, 2026 and is available at Nintendo’s announcement page. Information available on October 13, 2026 was therefore still pre-release.

- Play revamped Mini-Seasons campaigns as you level up your stars with an upgraded PXP system, customize their skills with Parallel Mods, and hit Parallel V faster through special challenges.
That timing matters for anyone searching for a button guide. Nintendo has confirmed the activity’s name, its Wuhu Island setting, and the broad motion-control instruction, but not the details below:
- Which controller a player must hold for Prop Plane.
- Which physical direction corresponds to climbing, descending, turning, or banking.
- Whether any buttons accelerate, brake, change views, or perform another action.
- How the game recenters or calibrates the controller, if it offers such a function.
- Whether the controls change between Sightseeing Tour, Ball Battle, and Free Play.
Do not treat a diagram copied from an unrelated flight game, a guessed “tilt forward to dive” rule, or a pre-release video without an official control explanation as a confirmed Prop Plane control scheme.
Prop Plane’s three activities
Nintendo’s UK description gives each activity a different objective. It does not publish a difficulty ranking, so the table describes the goal and style rather than claiming that one mode is objectively easiest.
| Activity | Nintendo’s stated goal | Play style | Useful starting question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sightseeing Tour | Find Spocco Photos. | Scenic searching and sightseeing. | Do you want a destination to look for while learning how the plane responds? |
| Ball Battle | Steal balls from opponents. | Competitive play against other players. | Are you ready to learn motion control while another player is pursuing the same objective? |
| Free Play | Explore at leisure. | Open-ended exploration without the stated photo or ball objective. | Would you rather observe the flight response before competing or searching? |
Choosing Free Play first is a sensible learning option because Nintendo describes it as exploration at leisure, but Nintendo has not called it the easiest mode. Likewise, starting with Sightseeing Tour is a preference for a visual objective, not an official difficulty recommendation.
How to begin Prop Plane without guessing the controls
The exact menu path has not been published, so the following is a safe launch-day procedure rather than a claim about an unreleased screen layout.
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
- Use the correct system and game. Prop Plane belongs to Nintendo Switch Sports Resort for Nintendo Switch 2. Confirm that you are not looking for a mode in the original Nintendo Switch Sports.
- Install the launch version and any available update. Nintendo’s pre-release pages cannot describe fixes or tutorial changes that may arrive after launch. Read the game’s own opening instructions before starting.
- Open the activity labeled Prop Plane. If the activity is grouped under a sports or resort menu, follow the on-screen labels; Nintendo has not supplied a numbered menu route.
- Pick a goal. Select Sightseeing Tour for Spocco Photo searching, Ball Battle for the ball-stealing objective, or Free Play for leisure exploration.
- Read the on-screen control prompt completely. The prompt shown by the released game should be treated as the authority for controller orientation, tilt directions, and any buttons. The pre-release description confirms only that tilting is involved.
- Begin with small, deliberate movements. This is a cautious way to discover the response without assuming which direction means climb, dive, turn, or bank. It is practical advice, not a Nintendo-published technique.
- Return to an exploration activity if you become disoriented. Free Play is the mode Nintendo describes as leisure exploration, so it can provide a lower-pressure place to observe the plane before trying Ball Battle. No official difficulty order has been stated.
What “tilt the controller” tells you—and what it does not
Motion control is the one verified input. “Tilt” establishes that changing the controller’s orientation is part of flying, but it does not specify a universal aviation layout. Real games may map orientation in different ways, and Prop Plane’s released tutorial may use a reference position or an on-screen indicator that Nintendo has not described yet.
| Reader question | Evidence available before launch | How to handle it |
|---|---|---|
| Which way should I tilt to go up? | Not stated. | Use the in-game prompt; do not rely on a guessed forward or backward rule. |
| Which way turns the plane? | Not stated. | Test only after the game displays its orientation guidance. |
| Are there buttons for speed or actions? | Not stated. | Check the released control screen and pause or help menu. |
| How do I recenter? | Not stated. | Look for an explicit recenter instruction. Do not assume a particular button combination. |
| Does every Prop Plane activity use identical controls? | Not stated. | Compare the prompts shown when entering each activity. |
This distinction prevents a common beginner problem: memorizing a direction from an unofficial explanation and then fighting the game when its reference orientation differs. Until Nintendo publishes a full map, the correct answer to “Which way do I tilt?” is that the direction-specific mapping has not been disclosed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA practical first-session learning plan
Stage 1: Establish your physical reference
Hold the controller in the orientation shown by the game, if it provides one, and keep your wrists relaxed. Make one small movement at a time, then watch what the plane does. Avoid making several large tilts simultaneously; you will not know which movement caused the result. This method does not assume a particular pitch or roll mapping.
Stage 2: Explore without an opponent
Use Free Play if you want to investigate the island at leisure. Observe how quickly the plane responds and whether the game presents an indicator, horizon, reticle, or recenter instruction. Those interface details must come from the released software; they are not confirmed by Nintendo’s pre-release copy.
Stage 3: Add a clear objective
Move to Sightseeing Tour when you want to look for Spocco Photos. Having a visible destination can make it easier to notice whether your adjustments are producing the intended path, but Nintendo has not stated that the mode includes a tutorial or graded difficulty.
Rank #3
- The ultimate game that brings together 30 different sports
- Challenge your family or friends and may the best player win
- Multiple game modes available: Quick match or Tournament / Team mode or Solo
- Explore a multitude of environments! Volcano / Desert / Snowy countries
- Unlock new costumes and choose to play with motion or buttons on NSW
Stage 4: Try competition only after the motion feels predictable
Ball Battle asks players to steal balls from opponents. Because other players introduce movement and pressure, use it after you understand the prompts and basic response for yourself. This is a learning recommendation, not an official ranking of the modes.

Sightseeing Tour
The stated target is to find Spocco Photos. Treat the photo locations as navigation landmarks rather than assuming that the game rewards speed. Scan the scenery, keep the controller movement measured, and reread any directional prompt if you lose your reference. Nintendo has not published the locations, scoring rules, time limits, or a route, so an exact search path cannot be supplied responsibly.
Ball Battle
The stated objective is to take balls from opponents. Before entering, make sure every player understands the control prompt displayed by the game. Do not expect a particular attack, boost, or evasion button unless the released instructions show one. The official pages do not establish the arena rules, scoring values, round length, or recommended tactics.
Free Play
Free Play is described as exploring at leisure. Use it to become familiar with the island and the plane’s response without claiming that it is an easy mode. Look for the game’s own signs of orientation or recentering, and record what the prompt says if you want to explain the controls to another player later.

Nintendo’s product listing warns that additional accessories may be required for multiplayer. That is a general multiplayer note; it does not establish that a second controller, strap, or any other accessory is required for Prop Plane specifically.

- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.
- More than 15 environments and tons of unlockable items.
Before inviting another player, check the package information, the game’s multiplayer setup screen, and the current official support instructions for your region. Do not buy a specialized accessory solely because a third-party guide assumes one is needed. The pre-release product information confirms the game and activity, but it does not identify a Prop Plane-specific accessory requirement.
Beginner troubleshooting when the flight feels wrong
The plane does not respond to movement
- Confirm that the controller is paired, powered, and recognized by the system.
- Return to the game’s displayed control instructions and verify that you are using the controller orientation it shows.
- Check for a game update or a revised help page after launch.
Nintendo has not stated whether Prop Plane has a separate calibration screen, so do not assume that a particular button or shake gesture will fix the issue.
The plane moves in an unexpected direction
Stop making large corrections and reread the prompt. The pre-release material does not establish which tilt produces climb, descent, turning, or banking. If the released game offers a recenter command, follow that command exactly; if it does not, use the game’s own help or support instructions rather than inventing a combination.
You cannot find the flight activity
Check that you are playing Nintendo Switch Sports Resort on Nintendo Switch 2 and that the game has reached its announced October 22, 2026 release. Prop Plane is the Nintendo name for the activity; searching the original game for a menu item called “Flying Mode” can lead to the wrong product.
How to verify a complete control guide after launch
Once the game is available, a reliable guide should be built from the in-game instructions rather than assumptions. Verify these items in each Prop Plane activity:
- The controller model and the physical orientation shown in the tutorial.
- The exact tilt direction for climbing, descending, turning, and banking.
- Every button action, including speed, camera, interaction, pause, or recenter functions.
- Whether neutral position is defined and how the game restores it.
- Whether Sightseeing Tour, Ball Battle, and Free Play display different prompts or rules.
Until those checks can be made against the released game, the dependable beginner guidance is limited but clear: Prop Plane is the Wuhu Island flying activity in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, tilting the controller is confirmed, and the three modes have different stated objectives. Specific direction maps and technique claims should wait for Nintendo’s post-launch instructions or the game’s own tutorial.
