If Nintendo Switch Sports is online but cannot find opponents, drops matches, or shows a matchmaking error, start with the console’s connection test—not with a game reinstall. A successful internet test only proves that the Switch reached Nintendo services; it does not prove that your network can establish a stable peer-to-peer match.
Use the result to separate an internet-access problem from a NAT or latency problem. Check System Settings > Internet > Test Connection, record the NAT type and speeds, then change one network condition at a time and test again. The sequence below covers Nintendo’s documented causes, including restrictive NAT, wireless interference, mobile hotspots, and the temporary online restriction that can follow repeated disconnects.
What “online not working” means in Switch Sports
Several different failures are commonly described as “Nintendo Switch Sports online not working,” but they do not have the same remedy:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- The Switch cannot connect to the internet or Nintendo services at all.
- The Switch reaches Nintendo services, but its NAT configuration prevents a peer-to-peer session.
- A match is formed but latency, interference, or another player’s network causes a timeout or disconnect.
- The game temporarily blocks online play after repeated unexpected departures from matches.
Switch Sports matchmaking depends on communication between players. Your console therefore needs more than adequate download speed. Nintendo’s connection test reports whether services were reached, a NAT type, download and upload speeds, and other diagnostic details. NAT describes how readily your network can exchange traffic with another player; latency describes how quickly and consistently that traffic travels. A fast connection can still fail if NAT is restrictive or responses are delayed.

Diagnose in that order: establish whether the console is online, interpret NAT, identify any error code, then test signal quality, latency, and an alternative connection. Avoid changing several router settings at once, because you will not know which change helped or made the network less secure.
Run and record the Switch connection test
Before changing the router or buying an accessory, capture a baseline from the console itself.
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Internet.
- Choose Test Connection.
- Record whether the test succeeds, the displayed NAT type, download speed, and upload speed.
If the test fails to connect, solve the saved Wi-Fi or wired connection first. Check that the correct network is selected, the password is current, and the router is operating. Multiplayer troubleshooting is premature while the console cannot reach the internet.
If the test succeeds but Switch Sports cannot find opponents or disconnects, keep the recorded NAT and speed results. Repeat the same test after each significant change. This gives you an objective before-and-after comparison rather than relying on whether one match happened to work.
How to read NAT types A through F
Nintendo uses a letter grade as a practical peer-to-peer diagnostic:
| NAT result | What it generally indicates | Matchmaking implication |
|---|---|---|
| A | Best conditions for peer-to-peer communication. | Most likely to connect broadly, although high latency can still cause timeouts. |
| B | Usually compatible with most other NAT types. | Generally suitable; it does not guarantee a stable match. |
| C | More restrictive peer communication. | May have trouble connecting to players with restrictive NAT. |
| D | Very restrictive communication. | Generally able to connect only with an A result. |
| F | Peer-to-peer communication could not be completed. | Matchmaking is unlikely to work until the network path changes. |
A or B is encouraging, not conclusive. Nintendo separates NAT compatibility from latency: a console can have an acceptable NAT result and still time out because wireless interference, weak signal, slow network equipment, or delayed internet responses make the peer session unusable. Conversely, a C or D result may explain why you can connect to some players but not others.
If the failure occurs only when joining one friend, that friend’s NAT type or network may be part of the problem. Both players’ network conditions affect a peer-to-peer session. If you cannot connect to anyone, start with your own router, connection type, and service provider.

Use the error code as a diagnostic clue
Error 2618-0514
Nintendo associates 2618-0514 with multiple players having a suboptimal network during peer-to-peer matchmaking. Listed causes include restrictive NAT, high latency, or a connection type that is unsuitable for this kind of session. It is not proof that your console is defective or that one particular setting is responsible.
Retry once, then test a different suitable network if possible. Nintendo favors cable, DSL, or fiber connections for this troubleshooting path and recommends following its matchmaking guidance if the error returns. A wired test is especially useful because it removes local Wi-Fi signal and interference from the experiment. If the match works on another network, the original network is preventing or degrading peer-to-peer communication; contact the ISP or router manufacturer for network-specific help.
Error 2618-0513
Nintendo describes 2618-0513 as a network that is not optimal for peer-to-peer matchmaking. Internet-service conditions, speed, and NAT can all contribute. Retry, check the NAT result from the connection test, and try another suitable network.
Nintendo specifically warns that mobile hotspots or 5G services may prevent peer-to-peer connections. A hotspot can show internet access and still use carrier-grade NAT or variable latency that does not permit the required player-to-player path. Treat a successful hotspot test as evidence about that hotspot, not as a guarantee that home broadband is configured correctly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“Your online play has repeatedly ended unexpectedly…”
This Switch Sports message indicates a temporary online restriction after repeated disconnects. Nintendo says the restriction can apply whether departures were intentional or not. Wait before attempting another online match, and do not leave a match early while troubleshooting. If the exits were unintended, improve the network conditions before trying again; repeatedly reconnecting while the same fault remains can extend the cycle of failed sessions.
Improve Wi-Fi and latency without guessing
When the connection test succeeds but matches fail, work through these low-risk tests in order.
Move the console closer for a controlled test
During its wireless diagnostic procedure, Nintendo suggests placing the console about 10 to 15 feet from the router. This is a troubleshooting distance, not a universal placement rule. Temporarily moving closer tests whether walls, floors, furniture, or distance are weakening the signal. Run the connection test and one match attempt in that position, then compare the result with the normal location.

Reduce wireless interference
Move the console and router away from sources that can obstruct or interfere with radio signals, such as dense furniture, enclosed cabinets, and other active wireless equipment. Keep the router’s vents clear and avoid hiding it behind a television or inside a cabinet. Change one physical condition at a time and retest; otherwise you cannot identify whether signal quality was the limiting factor.
Power-cycle the network equipment
Turn off the modem and router, wait for them to finish shutting down, then power them back on and allow them to reconnect fully before testing the Switch. This clears transient device states but does not repair a permanently restrictive NAT configuration. If the router has separate modem and router units, restart both according to the manufacturer’s normal procedure.
Compare latency, not just advertised speed
Nintendo’s latency guidance uses 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload as comparison figures. These are Nintendo Support reference values, with the publication year not stated; they are not a promise that meeting them guarantees smooth play. A connection can exceed those figures and still suffer from wireless interference, congestion, or slow responses from network devices. Conversely, a brief speed result below them does not identify the exact cause by itself. Use the connection test, match behavior, and repeat tests together.
Test IPv6 only when the troubleshooting branch calls for it
Nintendo’s matchmaking guidance includes testing with IPv6 turned off in some network configurations. This is an experiment, not a mandatory setting for every Switch owner. Record the current router setting, change only that setting, restart networking if required by the router, and retest. If there is no improvement, restore the original configuration rather than leaving an unnecessary change in place.
Use a wired connection as an isolation test
A wired test removes Wi-Fi signal strength and radio interference from the equation. Nintendo’s wired setup calls for high-speed internet service, a router, an Ethernet cable, and a compatible Switch dock. If the dock in use does not have a built-in LAN port, Nintendo specifies a compatible USB LAN adapter.
- Place the Switch in a compatible dock near the router or run Ethernet to the dock’s location.
- Connect the Ethernet cable from an available router LAN port to the dock’s built-in LAN port or to a compatible USB LAN adapter.
- Connect the adapter to the dock if the dock lacks an integrated LAN port.
- On the Switch, open System Settings > Internet and select the wired connection when prompted.
- Run Test Connection, record NAT and speeds, and try Switch Sports again.
Confirm which dock model you own before purchasing an adapter. Nintendo presents the adapter as a way to create a wired connection, not as a guaranteed cure for restrictive NAT, an ISP policy, or a peer’s incompatible network. If wired networking produces the same NAT result and error, the problem is likely beyond wireless interference.

| Connection option | What it helps test | Limitations to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Home Wi-Fi | Normal setup; reveals signal and interference issues. | Distance, walls, congestion, and radio interference can raise latency. |
| Home Ethernet | Separates Wi-Fi problems from router, ISP, and NAT problems. | Requires a suitable dock, cable, and possibly a USB LAN adapter; it cannot guarantee an open NAT. |
| Cable, DSL, or fiber alternative | Tests whether the original network blocks peer-to-peer traffic. | Availability and NAT behavior depend on the provider and plan. |
| Mobile hotspot or 5G | Shows whether a different access network behaves differently. | Nintendo notes that hotspots or 5G may prevent peer-to-peer connections; variable latency and carrier NAT are common concerns. |
Judge an option by NAT result, latency and stability, Wi-Fi conditions, whether the problem affects one player or everyone, and whether the service is a hotspot/5G connection or wired broadband. Raw download speed alone is the least informative comparison.

When only one friend or one group fails
Failure with one friend
Ask the other player to run the same connection test and share the NAT result. A restrictive result on either side can prevent the pair from forming a session. Have both players avoid hotspots during the test, move closer to their routers if using Wi-Fi, and retry after each person has a stable test result.
Failure with every opponent
Focus on your own network first: confirm the test result, check NAT, power-cycle the modem and router, reduce wireless interference, and try Ethernet or another suitable broadband connection. If every test produces a restrictive NAT or the same error, the router or ISP is a more likely point of investigation than an individual opponent.

Intermittent failures often indicate latency or stability rather than a simple inability to reach Nintendo services. Note when the failure occurs, whether other devices are heavily using the network, and whether moving closer to the router changes the result. Do not interpret one successful match as proof that the path is fixed; retest under the conditions that normally cause the disconnect.
Router and ISP escalation
If another network works but your home network does not, Nintendo’s guidance points to the original network as the likely barrier to peer-to-peer connections. Contact the ISP and describe the Switch’s NAT result, the exact error code, whether Ethernet changes it, and whether the problem affects all opponents. Ask the router manufacturer about firmware updates and network troubleshooting for the specific router model. Keep notes of the original settings before making changes.
A router maker or ISP can advise on configuration details that vary by hardware and service, including whether the service uses carrier-grade NAT. Avoid copying port-forwarding, DMZ, or other risky instructions from unrelated sources; a setting that changes NAT can affect every device on the home network and can reduce security. Nintendo’s published guidance does not say that purchasing a particular router or adapter fixes every matchmaking failure.
Prevent repeat disconnects and restrictions
- Finish the current match instead of intentionally leaving while diagnosing a problem.
- Do not repeatedly queue for online play immediately after a disconnect; wait if Switch Sports displays its temporary restriction message.
- Keep the router firmware and dock wiring in their normal, supported configuration.
- Use the same connection-test record to spot changes in NAT or speed after moving equipment.
- Prefer a stable home broadband or wired test over a mobile hotspot when troubleshooting peer-to-peer play.
- Retest after one change at a time so the effective fix is identifiable.
The practical goal is not a particular speed number or an expensive accessory. It is a network path with a compatible NAT result, low and consistent latency, and enough stability to keep the peer session alive. If the Switch test succeeds yet matches still fail after Wi-Fi, wired, and alternative-network tests, provide Nintendo Support, your ISP, or the router maker with the recorded NAT type, speeds, error code, and the exact point at which each test failed.
