Basketball in Nintendo Switch Sports uses motion controls. Swing a Joy-Con up and down to dribble or move, press X to pass, and hold ZR while raising the controller before flicking forward to shoot. On defense, raise and point the Joy-Con to block, or swipe it across your body to attempt a steal.
Basketball arrived with version 1.5.0 on July 9, 2024. The guide below explains the gestures, the timing that makes them more reliable, compatible hardware and modes, and a practical beginner routine.
What you need before starting
Basketball is a mode in Nintendo Switch Sports, not a separate download. Nintendo added it in software version 1.5.0, released July 9, 2024. Install that update before trying to use the sport. Nintendo lists Basketball for Play Globally, Play Locally, and Play with Friends.

Use a compatible Joy-Con configuration. Nintendo’s compatibility information says the supported controller arrangement can vary by sport, but Joy-Con setups are supported for Nintendo Switch Sports. A Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is not compatible, and the game does not support Handheld Mode. Nintendo recommends TV Mode for the best play experience.

| Setup question | What the available guidance establishes |
|---|---|
| Controller | Use paired or single Joy-Con arrangements supported for the sport. Pro Controllers are not supported. |
| Console mode | TV Mode is supported and recommended. Handheld Mode is not supported. |
| Online play | The version 1.5.0 update is required for Internet features, and Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for those features. |
| Local play | Basketball is listed as playable locally; follow the on-screen Joy-Con pairing instructions for the number of players. |
Make the play area safe
Clear furniture, pets, drinks, and other people from your swing area. Nintendo advises allowing adequate room, watching your surroundings, and wearing the Joy-Con wrist strap. The strap is especially useful when you are learning the larger shooting and blocking motions.
Basketball controls at a glance
The following map combines the detailed action guide from Game8 with the basic dribble, pass, and shoot gestures independently echoed in a contemporaneous Nintendo Life review. Nintendo’s official compatibility and update pages do not provide a complete basketball control table.
| Action | Input | Beginner execution |
|---|---|---|
| Dribble or move | Swing the Joy-Con vertically | Use comfortable, controlled up-and-down swings. Game8 reports that a larger, slower swing can move you at the same speed as a smaller, faster one. |
| Shoot | Hold ZR, raise the Joy-Con beside your head, then flick forward | Coordinate the hold, the lift, and the forward flick. Game8 recommends releasing the flick near the top of the jump and keeping the controller steady. |
| Pass | Press X | Pass to a teammate who is open rather than directly screened by a defender. |
| Ask for a pass | Press A | Use the signal when a teammate has the ball and you have a clear receiving lane. |
| Block | Raise and point the Joy-Con upward | Start the motion as you anticipate the shot; the guide notes that the jump takes time. |
| Steal | Swipe the Joy-Con across your body | Use selectively. A failed attempt can give the opponent an opening to dash past. |
| Fake out | Move the Joy-Con up and down slowly while preparing a shot | Keep the movement slow. A quick gesture may register as a shot instead of a fake. |
| Three-Point mode: grab or hold the ball | Hold ZR or ZL while pointing down | This specialized input is reported by Game8 for the three-point modes. |
Some third-party guide layouts render the shooting button as “ZY” or show directional-button alternatives for pass and pass-signal actions. Treat those as layout or transcription variations, not as a universal second control scheme. The consistent beginner sequence is vertical motion for dribbling, X for passing, and hold-ZR plus a forward flick for shooting.

How to perform each offensive action
Dribble and move without over-swinging
Move the Joy-Con vertically in a repeatable rhythm. You do not need violent or extremely fast arm movements; Game8 specifically notes that larger, slower swings can produce the same movement speed as smaller, faster swings. A compact motion is easier to repeat and leaves you ready to pass or shoot.
Keep your wrist strap fitted and your elbow inside the clear area around you. If your movement is not recognized, return the controller to a neutral position and try a clean vertical swing rather than adding speed.
Pass with X when a teammate is actually open
Press X to pass. Before pressing it, look for a teammate who is not directly screened by a defender. Passing into a defender wastes the possession and can leave you out of position while the other player recovers.

If you are the teammate without the ball, press A to signal that you want the pass. Use the signal when you have a clear lane instead of repeatedly requesting the ball while covered.
Shoot with a coordinated three-part motion
- Hold ZR. Begin holding the button before the raising motion.
- Raise the Joy-Con beside your head. Keep the controller stable as you lift it.
- Flick forward. Game8 advises timing the flick near the top of the jump, then keeping the controller steady through the release.
The forward flick is not a substitute for the button hold: all three parts belong to one sequence. Practice the timing at a comfortable speed first, then make the motion more compact once it feels consistent.
Use a fake-out carefully
To prepare a fake, move the Joy-Con up and down slowly rather than snapping it upward. The gesture is sensitive; moving too quickly can be interpreted as a real shot. A fake is therefore a timing exercise, not a rapid shake.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Practice long shots in Three-Point modes
Game8 recommends the three-point modes as a way to work on long shots. For the mode-specific grab or hold action, point the Joy-Con down while holding ZR or ZL. This is a guide-reported input, so rely on the on-screen prompt if your local layout displays a different symbol.
How to defend
Block by reading the shot, not by jumping constantly
Raise and point the Joy-Con upward to attempt a block. Start when you anticipate the opponent’s shot: the guide notes that the jump takes time, so reacting after the ball is already released can be late. Repeatedly raising the controller without a read can leave you reacting to the wrong action.
Attempt steals selectively
Swipe the Joy-Con across your body to attempt a steal. The gesture can turn defense into an immediate attack if it succeeds, but Game8 warns that a failed attempt may let the opponent dash past. Use it when the ball carrier is exposed rather than as a default response on every possession.

A short beginner practice routine
Build the controls in the same order you will use them in a match. The routine below is a practical combination of the listed actions, not a claim of an official Nintendo training program.
- Movement: Make controlled vertical swings until dribbling feels repeatable without large arm movements.
- Passing: Press A to signal, wait for a clear lane, then press X when a teammate is open.
- Shooting: Hold ZR, raise the Joy-Con beside your head, and flick forward near the top of the jump.
- Defense: Watch for the shot, raise and point upward for a block, and reserve the across-body swipe for a well-timed steal.
- Range: Use a three-point mode to repeat long shots and learn the separate down-pointing hold input.
Repeat the dribble-pass-shoot sequence before adding fakes or frequent steals. Fewer, cleaner gestures make it easier to tell whether a missed result came from timing, button state, or an overly large motion.
Play modes, updates, and online requirements
Play Globally
Play Globally is one of the modes Nintendo lists for Basketball. Internet features require version 1.5.0 or later and an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Play Locally
Local play does not depend on an Internet membership. Connect the Joy-Con controllers shown in the game’s pairing instructions, then choose Basketball from the available sports.
Play with Friends
Nintendo also lists Play with Friends for Basketball. Online friend play falls under the Internet-feature requirement: install the update and use Nintendo Switch Online.
Troubleshooting when a gesture does not work
- No Basketball option: Check that the game has installed version 1.5.0 or a later update. Basketball was added in that release.
- Controller is not recognized: Confirm that you are using a Joy-Con arrangement supported by the sport. A Pro Controller cannot be used, and Handheld Mode is unsupported.
- Shooting becomes a fake or no shot: Hold ZR before lifting, raise the controller beside your head, then make one deliberate forward flick. Avoid fast up-and-down motion during a fake.
- Pass goes to a covered teammate: Use A to signal only when open, and press X after checking that a defender is not screening the lane.
- Block starts too late: Begin raising the Joy-Con when you read the opponent’s shooting motion; the guide says the jump takes time.
- Steal leaves you exposed: Reduce speculative across-body swipes. A missed attempt can allow the opponent to dash past.
- Online mode is unavailable: Verify the update is installed and that the Nintendo account using the feature has Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- Motion feels inconsistent: Recreate the gesture with a clear, controlled movement, keep the controller steady at the end of a shot, and make sure the play area allows a full swing.
What to buy or add to your setup
If you do not own the game, Nintendo Switch Sports is the relevant software purchase; Basketball is included as a mode after the update, not as a separately verified free game. Additional Joy-Con controllers may help households that need more compatible controllers, but Nintendo’s compatibility guidance does not establish that an extra pair is required for every Basketball mode or player count. Choose the controller arrangement shown by the game for the mode you intend to play.
