If a Super Mario title will not download on your Nintendo Switch, first determine whether you are downloading a Nintendo Switch Online Classics app or a separately purchased eShop game. Classics use a Nintendo Switch Online entitlement, the correct linked Nintendo Account, internet access at launch, and enough storage. A purchased game uses normal eShop ownership and redownload rules. Check those four conditions before deleting software or considering a factory reset.
Identify what is supposed to download
“Super Mario” can refer to several delivery methods on Switch. The fix depends on which one you selected, so confirm the product type on the screen you are using.
Nintendo Switch Online Classics
NES and SNES-era games are delivered through Nintendo’s free Classics applications. Depending on region and language, the applications are labeled Family Computer Nintendo Classics and Super Famicom Nintendo Classics, or NES and SNES versions of the Nintendo Switch Online service. You download the application from Nintendo eShop, then open it to access the included games. The individual games are not purchased separately.
Recommended Free Tools
Game Boy Advance Classics are also free downloads, but access requires Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The application is obtained through the Nintendo Switch Online area of the eShop rather than through an ordinary paid game purchase. If you have the standard Nintendo Switch Online plan, the download or launch can fail because the required Expansion Pack entitlement is absent.

A separately purchased Super Mario game
A Super Mario title bought from Nintendo eShop follows ordinary digital-ownership rules. The purchasing Nintendo Account owns the license, and that account can redownload the game from its eShop account menu or from the product page. Nintendo Switch Online membership is not a substitute for owning a separately sold game. A subscription can provide access to Classics, but it does not grant every independently sold Super Mario release.
Use this quick distinction
| What you selected | What grants access | Where you normally start the download | What can block it |
|---|---|---|---|
| NES/SNES Classics application | Active Nintendo Switch Online membership for the user | Nintendo eShop listing for the relevant Classics app | Wrong user, expired membership, no internet, or insufficient storage |
| Game Boy Advance Classics application | Active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack entitlement | Nintendo Switch Online section of Nintendo eShop | Standard plan instead of Expansion Pack, wrong account, no internet, or insufficient storage |
| Separately purchased Super Mario game | Digital purchase owned by the Nintendo Account | eShop product page or the account’s redownload area | Different account, unavailable storage, network failure, or an incomplete update |
If the title is an application rather than a game icon, treat the problem as an app installation and entitlement issue first. If the title shows a price or a purchase record, use the purchased-game path.
Confirm the Switch user and Nintendo Account entitlement
Nintendo eShop use requires a Switch user linked to a Nintendo Account. Nintendo Switch Online access is also evaluated through that account linkage. A console can have several local users, so being signed in to the console does not prove that the active user owns the subscription or purchase.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- On the HOME Menu, select the user icon for the profile that is attempting the download.
- Open the profile’s Nintendo Account settings and verify which Nintendo Account is linked.
- Open Nintendo eShop with that same user. Check the account information and the Nintendo Switch Online membership status.
- For a purchased game, confirm that the account shows the title in its purchase or redownload history. For a Classic, confirm that the membership tier matches the application: standard Nintendo Switch Online for NES/SNES access, or Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack for Game Boy Advance access.
When a subscription belongs to another member of a Nintendo family group, use the user whose account is included in that family group. If the family membership was removed, expired, or changed, the console may still display the application but refuse the download or launch. Have the family-group administrator verify that the entitled account remains a member, then retry with that account selected.
Do not create a new Nintendo Account merely to bypass the error. A new account will not inherit another account’s purchase history or subscription. Switching to the account that actually owns the entitlement is the relevant correction.

Check internet access before retrying
Nintendo’s download requirements state that downloading software needs a Nintendo Switch and an internet environment. A connection that is fast enough for web browsing can still fail during eShop authentication or a large transfer, so test the console itself rather than relying on another device.
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select Internet, then Test Connection.
- Wait for the test to report a successful connection. If it fails, reconnect to the correct Wi-Fi network or restart the network equipment before attempting the download again.
- Return to the eShop or Nintendo Switch Online application and start the download once the test succeeds.
Close the game currently running and any other software using online services. Press the HOME button, highlight the software, press X, and choose Close. Downloads can be interrupted or delayed when another title is maintaining an online session, especially if the console is also installing an update.
Keep the Switch awake while diagnosing the problem. If the console enters sleep mode, the transfer may pause depending on the network and power settings. A pause is not the same as a failed purchase; check the HOME Menu download indicator before starting a second transaction.
Verify free space and the storage destination
A download needs enough free capacity in the location selected for software: the console’s system memory or its microSD card. Check both the available amount and which location the Switch is using.
- Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
- Select Data Management.
- Review System Memory and microSD Card to see available space and installed software.
- Return to the eShop download and confirm that the destination has room for the application and its update data.
If system memory is nearly full, archive software you can redownload later or move compatible data to a supported card. Nintendo supports microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards for Switch use. Nintendo recommends adding a microSD card before internal storage fills, rather than waiting for a download to fail. Verify the card’s capacity and Switch compatibility before buying one; a card that is not recognized cannot serve as the download destination.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
After inserting a card, open System Settings > Data Management and confirm that the console lists it. If the card does not appear, power the console off completely, remove and reinsert the card with the console off, and check Data Management again. Do not format a card that contains data you still need without first confirming that the data can be redownloaded or backed up according to Nintendo’s rules.
A free-space failure can occur even when the game itself is small because updates and temporary download data also need room. Leave additional capacity instead of targeting only the size shown on the product page.
Install pending system and software updates
An outdated system, Nintendo Switch Online application, or purchased game can prevent a download from completing or can leave an installation unable to start. Update the console and the affected software before repeating the attempt.
Update the Switch system
- Open System Settings.
- Scroll to System.
- Select System Update and allow the console to check for and install the latest available update.
- Keep the console connected to power and the internet until the update finishes, then restart if the system requests it.
Nintendo notes that when an update cannot fit in the available space, the console may remove the old software data before downloading the new data. During that process the game cannot be played until the new download completes. That behavior can look like a missing game, but it is an incomplete update rather than a lost purchase. Free space first, then let the update finish without interrupting it.
Update the application or game
- Highlight the Nintendo Switch Online Classics app or the purchased Super Mario game on the HOME Menu.
- Press the + or – button.
- Select Software Update, then Via the Internet.
- Wait for the update to install before launching the software.
If the application is not yet installed, open its eShop listing and use the download option there. After both system and software updates are complete, restart the Switch and retry once, with other network-using software closed.

When it downloads but Super Mario will not start
A successful installation does not remove the launch check for Nintendo Switch Online Classics. Nintendo states that an internet connection is required when a Classics application is launched. After it has launched successfully, the Classics can be used without an internet connection for up to seven days.
- Connect the Switch to the internet and run System Settings > Internet > Test Connection.
- Start the Classics application while the entitled user is selected.
- Leave the application open long enough for the membership check to complete, then close it normally.
- Test the application offline. The seven-day offline period starts from the successful online authentication and is not a permanent exemption from launch checks.
If the app starts online but refuses to start offline, reconnect and launch it again. Check that the subscription has not expired and that the same Nintendo Account is still being used. Changing users can make an installed application appear unavailable because the new user does not have the entitlement that authorized it.
This launch rule applies to subscription-based Classics, not to the general redownload behavior of a separately purchased game. A purchased game still needs its owning account and any required software updates, but its access is based on the purchase license rather than the Nintendo Switch Online Classics authentication window.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| Symptom | Most relevant check | Expected correction |
|---|---|---|
| The eShop offers a download, but the active user receives an entitlement message | Account and membership tier | Switch to the Nintendo Account that owns the purchase or the required Nintendo Switch Online plan. |
| The download remains queued or repeatedly pauses | Internet test, free space, and other online software | Restore a stable connection, close network-using software, and free capacity in the selected storage location. |
| The application disappeared during an update | System memory and update status | Allow the update to finish; Nintendo may remove old software data when there is not enough room for the new data. |
| The app installed but will not open away from home | Classics launch authentication | Reconnect, launch once online with the entitled user, then use the offline period of up to seven days. |
| A purchased game shows no redownload option | Purchase history and user account | Open eShop with the original purchasing account; another local user will not show that account’s license. |
| The microSD card is not offered as a destination | Data Management recognition | Power off, reseat the supported card, and verify that the console recognizes it before retrying. |
Use a controlled retry instead of repeating purchases
Once the account, connection, and storage checks are complete, perform one clean retry so you can tell whether the correction worked.
- Close every running game and application.
- Confirm the entitled user is selected on the HOME Menu.
- Run the internet connection test.
- Check free space in System Settings > Data Management.
- Install any system or software update offered.
- Restart the Switch.
- Open the correct eShop page or Nintendo Switch Online Classics app and start the download once.
- Watch the HOME Menu download indicator until the installation reports completion.
Do not buy the same separately sold game again while troubleshooting. If the purchase already belongs to the account, the account’s redownload option is the correct route. For a Classics app, do not search for a second paid listing: the application is free, while access is controlled by the subscription entitlement.

Record the exact error code and contact Nintendo
If the documented checks do not resolve the problem, the complete error code is more useful than a description such as “download not working.” Record every digit and letter, the wording on the screen, whether the error appeared in eShop or while launching, and which user was active. Also note whether the internet test succeeded and whether the title is a Classics app or a purchased game.
Use Nintendo’s support index to search the exact code. Nintendo provides error-code explanations, account and network FAQs, and technical-support routes for download and purchase problems. Follow the instructions for the specific code rather than applying a generic fix intended for a different failure.
Factory-resetting the console should not be the first response. A reset can remove local data and settings without correcting an expired subscription, a wrong Nintendo Account, a missing Expansion Pack entitlement, or an unrecognized storage card. Escalate with the code after the account, internet, storage, update, and launch-authentication checks above.
