For one Nintendo Account that only needs online play, the standard 12-month Individual membership is the sensible default at $19.99 in the United States. Choose a standard Family membership at $34.99 when two or more people in the same Nintendo Account family group need coverage. Choose an Expansion Pack plan only when you will use its larger classic-game libraries or included downloadable content; the annual prices are $49.99 for one account and $79.99 for a family group of up to eight accounts.
Nintendo’s prices and availability vary by country. The amounts in this guide are the U.S. prices listed by Nintendo on October 13, 2026, and should not be treated as global pricing.
All Nintendo Switch Online plans at a glance
Nintendo Switch Online memberships are tied to Nintendo Accounts rather than to a particular console. The right choice depends on how many accounts need service, whether you need Expansion Pack content, and whether the games you play actually require a membership for online features.
| Plan | Term | U.S. listed price | Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch Online Individual | 1 month | $3.99 | One Nintendo Account |
| Nintendo Switch Online Individual | 3 months | $7.99 | One Nintendo Account |
| Nintendo Switch Online Individual | 12 months | $19.99 | One Nintendo Account |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Individual | 12 months | $49.99 | One Nintendo Account |
| Nintendo Switch Online Family | 12 months | $34.99 | Nintendo Account family group, up to eight accounts |
| Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack Family | 12 months | $79.99 | Nintendo Account family group, up to eight accounts |
These are Nintendo’s listed U.S. amounts for 2026. Nintendo says price depends on country and membership duration, so check the local Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store before buying elsewhere.

What the standard Nintendo Switch Online membership includes
Online multiplayer for most games
A membership is required for co-op and competitive online features in many first- and third-party Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch games. Nintendo specifically lists games such as Mario Kart World, Splatoon 3, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate among titles whose online features generally require service. Requirements are set by each game, so confirm the product information for the exact title you intend to play.
Switch 2 GameChat and the Nintendo Switch App
Standard membership benefits include Switch 2 GameChat, plus the Nintendo Switch App voice-chat feature for compatible games. Nintendo’s app voice-chat feature is for users aged 13 and older. Some games also provide game-specific app services as part of the standard offering.
Cloud save backup
Cloud save backup lets supported game saves be stored with your Nintendo Account, providing a recovery option when you move to another console or replace one. Availability is determined by the game and Nintendo’s service rules.
Recommended Free Tools
Nintendo Classics and special offers
The standard tier includes Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy Nintendo Classics libraries, along with member-only special offers. These libraries are part of the regular service; the larger retro catalog belongs to Expansion Pack.
What Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack adds
Expansion Pack includes every standard benefit and adds more classic-game libraries plus access to selected downloadable content at no additional charge while the membership is active.

Additional classic libraries
Nintendo’s comparison lists Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance and Virtual Boy libraries. On Nintendo Switch 2, the Expansion Pack comparison also lists Nintendo GameCube. GameCube availability is therefore a Switch 2-specific addition in Nintendo’s current documentation, not a benefit that should be assumed on an original Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED.
Included downloadable content
Nintendo gives Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass and Splatoon 2 – Octo Expansion as examples of selected downloadable content available through Expansion Pack. Access is not the same as purchasing or permanently owning the DLC. Nintendo’s terms can differ by title, and access can end when the membership ends, so check the current terms for a specific expansion before relying on it.

Individual membership
An Individual plan covers one Nintendo Account. It is the straightforward option for a single player, even if that account uses more than one Switch console. Other accounts on the same console do not receive coverage automatically.
Family membership
A Family plan covers the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group, with a maximum of eight accounts. The covered users can play on different consoles; the plan is account-based rather than tied to the console where it was purchased.
Everyone must be in the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group. Simply sharing a console is not enough. Nintendo also allows accounts with different country settings to share a family plan, while warning that feature availability varies by country.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.

Who can purchase and what happens if they leave
The purchaser can be any family-group member aged 18 or older and does not have to be the family-group administrator. If that purchaser leaves the family group, the other members lose access until they obtain coverage through another membership.

Compare the annual price with the number of accounts that will actually use the service. Standard Family costs less than buying two standard Individual 12-month memberships: $34.99 versus $39.98. Expansion Pack Family likewise costs less than two Expansion Pack Individual annual memberships: $79.99 versus $99.98.
| Situation | Best starting point | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One account, online play only | Individual, 12 months | Lowest annual cost for a single account |
| One account, uncertain commitment | Individual, 1 or 3 months | Shorter terms avoid an annual commitment |
| Two or more accounts, no Expansion Pack need | Family, 12 months | Costs less than two standard annual Individual plans |
| One account that wants the expanded retro catalog or selected DLC | Expansion Pack Individual | Adds those libraries and DLC access to standard benefits |
| Several family-group accounts that want Expansion Pack | Expansion Pack Family | One annual plan covers up to eight accounts |
A family plan becomes more economical as more eligible accounts use it, but only when those accounts are in the purchaser’s family group. Do not buy it solely because several people use the same console.
Can you play online without Nintendo Switch Online?
Sometimes. Nintendo says a small number of games allow online multiplayer without a membership; Fortnite is one example identified in Nintendo’s support material. There is no universal rule for free-to-play or third-party games, so check the individual game’s eShop listing or product information before subscribing. If the title requires Nintendo Switch Online for its online mode, the requirement will be stated there.
How to buy a membership
- Choose the Nintendo Account that should receive service. For a Family plan, confirm that the intended users are already in that account’s family group.
- Open Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store. Nintendo sells memberships through those channels, and download codes are also available from select retailers.
- Select the exact plan and term. Check the country, Individual or Family coverage, and whether the listing says Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack.
- Review the renewal and payment details. Expansion Pack Individual and both Family plans are annual-only; standard Individual also has one- and three-month terms.
- Confirm activation on the correct account. A purchase made on one Nintendo Account does not automatically cover unrelated accounts on the same console.
Trials, renewals and changing plans
Seven-day trial
Nintendo offers a seven-day free trial of standard Nintendo Switch Online. The trial does not include content exclusive to Expansion Pack, so it cannot be used to sample the additional classic libraries or Expansion Pack DLC access.

Automatic renewal and maximum stored time
Same-type memberships can extend total service time to a maximum of three years. Nintendo says the automatic-renewal setting adjusts to the most recently purchased membership, so review that setting after changing the term or tier rather than assuming the old renewal choice remains.
Moving from standard to Expansion Pack
Nintendo allows a customer to move from standard membership to Expansion Pack and receive a discount based on remaining membership days, subject to Nintendo’s plan rules. The exact credit depends on the account and remaining term.
Moving down from Expansion Pack
An active Expansion Pack membership cannot be changed immediately to standard. Nintendo’s FAQ says you can choose another plan once the current term ends.
Individual and Family time do not merge
Family coverage does not combine with Individual membership time. If you move between those structures, check the account’s current term and Nintendo’s instructions before purchasing so you do not assume unused time will transfer in a way it does not.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying Family for people outside the family group: add the accounts to the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group first.
- Assuming the console owner is covered: coverage follows Nintendo Accounts, not the hardware. Each account must be covered individually or through the family group.
- Expecting Expansion Pack content in the trial: the seven-day trial is for standard service only.
- Treating included DLC as permanent ownership: confirm each DLC’s current access conditions and what happens after membership expiration.
- Ignoring country settings: accounts with different country settings can share a family plan, but Nintendo warns that feature availability varies by country.
- Forgetting renewal changes: check automatic-renewal settings after buying a different term or tier.
Recommendations by player type
Solo player who mainly plays online
Choose the 12-month Individual plan if you expect to play throughout the year. It provides the core online, cloud-save, communication and standard Classics benefits without paying for the Expansion Pack catalog.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Solo player interested in Nintendo’s retro catalog
Choose Expansion Pack Individual when Nintendo 64, SEGA Genesis, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Boy or, on Switch 2, Nintendo GameCube libraries are a meaningful part of what you want to play. The higher annual price is justified by those additions, not by basic online multiplayer alone.
Household with multiple Nintendo Accounts
Use Family when the accounts are in one Nintendo Account family group. Standard Family is the economical choice when everyone needs ordinary online features; Expansion Pack Family is appropriate when the group also wants the added libraries or selected DLC access.
Player testing the service
Use the seven-day standard trial when you need to verify the core service. It will not answer whether Expansion Pack’s extra catalog or DLC is worthwhile, because those benefits are excluded from the trial.
Bottom line: which membership should you buy?
Buy standard Individual for one account that needs ordinary online play, standard Family for two or more family-group accounts, and Expansion Pack only when its extra libraries or selected DLC matter to you. Check the specific game’s online requirement first, because a small number of games, including Fortnite, can be played online without a membership. Recheck Nintendo’s local pricing and current content terms at checkout, since prices, libraries and access conditions can change.
