For many U.S. players, the standard Nintendo Switch Online plan is worth considering if they regularly play compatible games online, want cloud backups for supported saves, or will use its classic-game library. The Expansion Pack costs considerably more, so it makes sense mainly if you’ll play its added retro collections or use included DLC and Switch 2 benefits. Household size can also change the calculation: a Family plan covers up to eight Nintendo Accounts.
Prices and features here reflect Nintendo’s U.S. pages checked October 7, 2026. Prices and benefit availability vary by country; check your local Nintendo store for current terms.

#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
What standard membership includes
Standard membership includes online multiplayer for compatible games, cloud backup for compatible save data, access to NES, Super NES, and Game Boy Classics, Nintendo Music, special offers, and other benefits. Nintendo describes the service as offering more than 150 favorites across its classic-game libraries; that total covers the service as a whole, not the standard tier alone. The selection changes over time.
Coverage is not universal: online play depends on the game, and cloud backup is available for most—not all—games. Check Nintendo’s overview and its support information, as well as the requirements for the specific game you play.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
When standard membership is a good fit
- You regularly play compatible games whose online features require a membership.
- You want cloud backups for games that support Save Data Cloud.
- You expect to play the NES, Super NES, or Game Boy collection included with standard membership.
- Several accounts in your household will use the service, making the Family plan’s shared annual price relevant.
What Expansion Pack adds
Expansion Pack includes standard benefits and selected Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Genesis games. On Switch 2, it also includes selected Nintendo GameCube Classics. Nintendo lists selected DLC—including Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass—and Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs for selected games.
Included DLC is access tied to an active membership, not permanent ownership. You need the full base game separately, and access to included DLC pauses if the membership lapses. Before paying extra for a particular title, check Nintendo’s current Expansion Pack catalog and confirm that the content you want is included.

Switch 2 benefits and GameChat
Expansion Pack’s selected GameCube Classics and Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs may make the higher tier more relevant to Switch 2 owners. GameChat, however, is available to members of either plan; it is not exclusive to Expansion Pack. Nintendo says the open-access period for GameChat ended March 31, 2026, after which a membership is required.
How to decide which plan is worth it
- Start with online play. List the games you actually play online and check whether their multiplayer features require membership. Nintendo’s requirement applies to compatible games, not every game.
- Check your save-backup needs. If cloud backups matter, verify that your games support Save Data Cloud; not every save is covered.
- Be realistic about the game libraries. Consider whether you will play the standard NES, Super NES, and Game Boy titles. For Expansion Pack, decide whether its added GBA, N64, Virtual Boy, Genesis, or—in Switch 2’s case—GameCube catalog is worth the price difference to you.
- Evaluate bundled DLC carefully. Make sure you own or plan to buy the required base game, and account for the fact that DLC access pauses when membership ends.
- Count actual users. Compare the number of household accounts that will use the service with the $34.99 standard or $79.99 Expansion Pack annual Family price. The maximum of eight only improves per-account cost if all eight slots are used.
- Factor in your console. Switch 2 owners who want the selected GameCube titles or upgrade packs have additional reasons to consider Expansion Pack; those benefits do not apply to every game.
A practical choice by player
- One player mainly seeking online play and standard benefits: compare the $19.99 annual Individual plan with how often you’ll use those features.
- Several people with separate accounts: the standard Family plan may cost less per person than individual subscriptions; use the actual number of users in your comparison.
- A retro-game or DLC fan: Expansion Pack is easier to justify when you expect to use its additional libraries or selected included DLC.
- A Switch 2 owner: include the selected GameCube Classics and upgrade packs in the decision, but don’t pay for the tier on the assumption that GameChat requires it.
Free trial, auto-renewal, and membership codes
Nintendo advertises a seven-day free trial for standard Nintendo Switch Online in the U.S. The trial automatically converts to a one-month auto-renewing membership at the then-current price unless you cancel before it ends. Nintendo says it is unavailable to accounts with an active Individual or Family membership, and it does not trial Expansion Pack. Read the current terms on Nintendo’s service page; turn off auto-renewal before the trial ends if you don’t want a paid renewal.
