Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics is available only with Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. A standard Individual or Family membership does not include the GBA library. Expansion Pack members can play supported titles alone, with nearby players over local wireless, or online, but the exact multiplayer mode depends on each game.
Your classic-game save remains on the Switch if the membership expires. Nintendo Account-linked Save Data Cloud backups are a separate feature: they require an active membership to access, and compatible backups can be downloaded to another Switch. GBA software also works offline after download, provided the console verifies membership online at least once every seven days.
Which Nintendo Switch Online plan includes GBA games?
Nintendo’s membership matrix lists Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics as a benefit of both Expansion Pack tiers and excludes it from the standard Individual and standard Family tiers.

| Expansion Pack Individual | One Nintendo Account | Included |
| Expansion Pack Family | Up to eight accounts in a Nintendo Account family group | Included |
“Family” refers to the Nintendo Account family group, not to a single console. The group can contain as many as eight accounts, so an Expansion Pack Family membership can be useful when several people in the same group use the service. An Individual membership covers only the account that purchased it.

- Soft Silicone Interior Slots – Each cartridge fits snugly into its custom silicone insert, preventing movement and scratches while ensuring your games stay in place.
- Strong Magnetic Closure – Features a secure magnetic clasp that keeps your case shut tight during travel. Even when turned upside down, it stays closed — yet it’s easy to open when needed.
- Easy to Insert & Remove – Thoughtfully designed relief cutouts allow you to pop out cartridges effortlessly without damaging the cases or your games.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly – Lightweight and durable, thisGBA games case replaces flimsy boxes for a sleek, portable storage solution perfect for travel, collectors, or everyday use.
The games are a membership benefit rather than titles you buy permanently. You retain access while the relevant Expansion Pack membership is active; ending the membership removes access to the library until you renew.
Is Expansion Pack Family worth it?
The practical question is how many Nintendo Accounts need GBA access. One person who plays on one account needs the Individual tier. A family-group plan becomes more efficient when multiple accounts need to use the GBA library, because Nintendo allows up to eight accounts in that group.
- Choose Expansion Pack Individual when one account is the only user.
- Choose Expansion Pack Family when two or more members of the same Nintendo Account family group need access.
- Do not upgrade solely for GBA if every user has a standard Individual or Family membership and does not need the Expansion Pack benefits; those standard tiers do not unlock the GBA application.
Membership access follows the account, so signing into a different profile does not turn a standard membership into Expansion Pack access. Each person who intends to use the GBA service should be covered by the appropriate Individual membership or by the family group.

Can you play Nintendo Switch Online GBA games with friends?
Yes, when the individual game supports the mode you want. Nintendo’s GBA software listing gives these platform-level capabilities:
Rank #2
- 🎮 Designed specifically for Gameboy, offering seamless plug-and-play functionality.
- 🎮 Features an extensive library of 1000 classic games in one convenient cartridge for endless retro gaming entertainment.
- 🎮 Includes Retrotech printed instructions for a classic feel.
- 🎮 Single cartridge solution eliminates the need to swap games, making it perfect for retro gaming enthusiasts.
| Mode | Players listed by Nintendo | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Single system | 1 | One player on one Switch system |
| Local wireless | 2–4 | Nearby compatible Switch systems can connect wirelessly |
| Online | 2–4 | Players can connect through the online service when the title supports it |
Those numbers describe the software platform, not a promise that every GBA title offers every mode. A game may be single-player only, support local multiplayer but not online play, or offer a particular multiplayer feature only after you reach a specific in-game menu. Check the title’s own options before arranging a session.
Playing locally with nearby consoles
Local wireless is designed for players in the same place, each using a compatible Switch system. Start the GBA application, open a supported game, and select its multiplayer option. Follow the on-screen instructions to create or join the local session. The exact wording and setup screens can differ by game and by app version.
Playing online
For an online session, each participating account needs the required Expansion Pack access, and the game itself must list online multiplayer. Open the supported title in the GBA app, choose its multiplayer or online option, and invite or join through the controls shown by that game. If an account lacks the required membership, it cannot use the GBA online feature even if another player in the session is subscribed.
Why a listed mode may not appear
- The specific title may not support that mode even though the GBA application supports multiplayer in general.
- The game may use a different menu name for link, versus, co-operative, or online play.
- An account may not have active Expansion Pack access.
- The console may need to connect online before the service can verify membership.
What happens to a GBA save when Nintendo Switch Online expires?
Nintendo distinguishes the save stored by the classic-game software from a Save Data Cloud backup. If your membership ends, the classic-game save data remains on the console. Nintendo Support states that it remains available for use if you renew later.

| Save location | After membership expiration | When it can be used |
|---|---|---|
| Classic-game save on the Switch | Remains on that console | When local access to the game is available again after renewal |
| Save Data Cloud backup | Cannot be accessed while the membership is expired | After an active membership is restored, subject to software compatibility |
Do not delete the GBA application or its local save while waiting to renew. The retention rule applies to the save data that remains on the console; it is not a guarantee that a deleted save can be recovered.
Can you transfer a GBA save to another Switch?
The supported route is Nintendo’s Save Data Cloud service for compatible software. Cloud backups are linked to the Nintendo Account, not to a physical cartridge or to the original console alone.
- On the original Switch, make sure the relevant software has a current Save Data Cloud backup while the membership is active.
- On the second Switch, sign in with the same Nintendo Account.
- Open the compatible software’s save-data management controls and download the available cloud backup.
- Launch the GBA software and confirm that the expected progress is present before continuing to play.
This is not a universal cartridge-style transfer. The cloud option depends on three conditions: you must use the same Nintendo Account, the membership must be active for cloud access, and the software must support Save Data Cloud. A local save that never reached the cloud cannot be downloaded to another console through this method.

Nintendo’s service FAQ also says that, after expiration, prior cloud backups can be regained by resubscribing within 180 days. That period concerns access to the existing cloud backups; it does not make an expired membership usable during the lapse.

Can you play the GBA app offline?
Yes. Download the GBA software while you have internet access, then launch it without a continuous connection. Nintendo Australia’s FAQ says the console must connect online to verify membership every seven days. Plan a connection before that verification window closes, especially if you will be travelling or using the Switch somewhere without reliable internet.
Offline capability does not convert the service into a permanent purchase. The seven-day check confirms that the account still has the relevant membership. If the console cannot complete a required verification, online membership features and access to the subscription application may be interrupted until it connects again.

Nintendo presents a curated library that can change over time rather than a fixed, permanent catalog. Its product materials highlight The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3, and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. These examples illustrate the type of software offered, but they are not a guarantee that the catalog will never change.
Check Nintendo’s current Game Boy Advance – Nintendo Classics listing in your region before subscribing for a particular title. Availability can be revised, and multiplayer support still has to be checked game by game.

How to troubleshoot common GBA service problems
“I have Nintendo Switch Online, but the GBA app is unavailable.”
Verify that the account has Expansion Pack Individual access or belongs to an Expansion Pack Family group. Standard Individual and standard Family memberships do not include GBA games. If the account was recently added to a family group, allow the console to connect online so membership status can refresh.
“The game launches, but I cannot find multiplayer.”
Confirm that the title supports the desired mode. Nintendo’s 2–4-player figures apply to the platform listing; an individual game may support only one player or only local wireless. Open the game’s own multiplayer or online menu, since labels vary by title and app version.
“My save is missing on a second Switch.”
Use the same Nintendo Account that created the backup, confirm that the membership is active, and check that the software is compatible with Save Data Cloud. A local save stored only on the first console will not appear automatically on the second.
“The GBA app worked offline, then stopped.”
Connect the console to the internet and allow the membership verification to complete. Nintendo requires this check every seven days. After verification, offline play can continue until the next verification interval.
“I cancelled, then renewed, but expected cloud data is unavailable.”
Check whether you resubscribed within the 180-day period Nintendo specifies for regaining prior Save Data Cloud backups. Also verify the Nintendo Account and the software’s cloud compatibility. The local classic-game save may still be on the original console even when a cloud backup is not accessible.
