Nintendo Switch Online is Nintendo’s paid service for online play and related benefits. In the United States, an individual standard membership costs $19.99 per 12 months, while a family membership costs $34.99 for up to eight Nintendo Accounts. The $49.99 individual and $79.99 family Expansion Pack tiers add more classic-game libraries, selected downloadable content (DLC), and Switch 2 features. The right choice depends on how many accounts you need to cover, which games and systems you use, and whether the included extras justify the higher annual price.
What Nintendo Switch Online provides
Nintendo Switch Online is a subscription attached to a Nintendo Account. It is not a separate game purchase and it does not make every Switch title an online game. Its benefits apply to compatible games, systems and regions.
- Compatible online play: Play supported multiplayer games over the internet. The game itself must support online functionality, and some titles may have their own requirements.
- Classic-game libraries: The standard tier includes Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Super Nintendo Entertainment System (Super NES) and Game Boy titles. Expansion Pack adds Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance and SEGA Genesis libraries; Nintendo Switch 2 also gets Nintendo GameCube Classics.
- Save Data Cloud: Compatible games can back up save data. Compatibility is determined by the game, so a membership is not a guarantee that every save can be uploaded.
- Nintendo Music: Members can use Nintendo’s music service on a compatible smart device.
- Special offers: Nintendo periodically makes member offers available. The exact offer and its availability can vary by country.
- Switch 2 features: Nintendo lists GameChat for Switch 2. GameChat and GameCube Classics are Switch 2-only benefits in the current overview.
Some app functions, including voice chat, require a compatible smartphone and a Nintendo Account user aged 13 or older. Nintendo also limits online, cloud and app features to compatible games or services; check an individual game’s requirements rather than assuming universal support.

Standard membership: what you actually get
Online multiplayer
A standard membership enables online play in compatible games. It does not include the game, a console, broadband service or a guarantee that a game’s servers will remain available. A free-to-play title may have different online requirements, so check that title’s current Nintendo information before subscribing solely for it.
NES, Super NES and Game Boy catalogs
The standard tier provides curated libraries of NES, Super NES and Game Boy games. The catalog is an access benefit while the membership is active, rather than a transfer of ownership of every included game. Nintendo can determine which games are offered and where they are available.
Cloud saves and Nintendo Music
Save Data Cloud is useful when moving to another console or recovering from a hardware problem, but it is game-specific. Some compatible games may use different save systems or be excluded. Nintendo Music is a smart-device benefit and requires compatible hardware and account access.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
Special offers
Special offers are an additional membership benefit, not a fixed discount list. Their products, terms and availability can change, particularly across countries.
What Expansion Pack adds
Expansion Pack contains everything in the standard tier and adds access to larger classic-game collections and selected current-game extras.
Additional classic systems
- Nintendo 64
- Game Boy Advance
- SEGA Genesis
- Nintendo GameCube Classics on Nintendo Switch 2
GameCube Classics are specifically a Switch 2 benefit in Nintendo’s overview. They are not a standard-Switch feature simply because the account has Expansion Pack.

Expansion Pack can provide access at no additional charge to select downloadable content. You still need the base game for the DLC to function. The benefit is subscription access while the membership is active; it is not a permanent purchase of the DLC, and it does not include every DLC release.

- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)

Switch 2 upgrade packs
Eligible Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade packs can also be included. To download an upgrade pack, you need a physical or digital copy of the relevant game. The underlying game is not supplied by the subscription, and eligibility depends on the specific title.
Optional GameCube controller
Nintendo says an optional Nintendo GameCube controller available for purchase by Nintendo Switch Online members is compatible only with Nintendo Switch 2. It is an accessory for people who want that control style, not a requirement for Expansion Pack, GameCube Classics or Nintendo Switch Online generally.
Individual versus family membership
How a family membership works
A family membership covers everyone in the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group, up to eight Nintendo Account users total. The users may play on one console or several consoles; they do not need to share hardware. The plan follows the accounts in the family group.

Each Nintendo Account that needs the service must be included in the family group. Nintendo allows someone aged 18 or older to purchase the family membership, and that purchaser does not have to be the family-group administrator.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
Adding someone to the group
- The family-group administrator signs in to the Nintendo Account website.
- Open Family group.
- Select Add a member, then Invite someone to your family group.
- Enter the invitee’s Nintendo Account email address and send the invitation.
- The invited person accepts the invitation. Coverage begins only after the account is in the family group and the membership is active.
Coordinate with the administrator before buying. Accounts left outside the group will not receive the family plan’s benefits, and changing family-group membership is an account-management matter rather than a console setting.
When the family plan saves money
For eight accounts, eight separate annual standard memberships would total $159.92 ($19.99 multiplied by eight), compared with $34.99 for one standard family plan. Eight annual Expansion Pack individual memberships would total $399.92, compared with $79.99 for the family tier. Those are arithmetic comparisons using Nintendo’s listed U.S. prices, not separately published Nintendo statistics.
| Eight-account comparison | Separate individual plans | One family plan | Approximate family-plan cost per account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard, 12 months | $159.92 total | $34.99 total | $4.37 |
| Expansion Pack, 12 months | $399.92 total | $79.99 total | $10.00 |
The per-account figures assume all eight places are used and the group remains coordinated for the full term. With fewer users, compare the family price with the exact number of individual memberships you would otherwise buy.
How to choose the right tier
Choose standard individual when
- Only one account needs online play, cloud saves or standard classic libraries.
- You do not need Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis or Switch 2 GameCube Classics.
- You want to test the service for one or three months before committing to a year.
At the listed U.S. prices, the annual individual plan costs $19.99; the one-month and three-month options cost $3.99 and $7.99 respectively. A longer term costs less per month, but only if you expect to use it.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Choose standard family when
Two or more Nintendo Accounts in your household or coordinated group need the standard benefits. Compare $34.99 for the 12-month family plan with the sum of the individual plans those accounts would otherwise require. Remember that every covered account must join the family group.
Choose Expansion Pack when its extras matter
Expansion Pack costs $30 more per year for one account ($49.99 versus $19.99) and $45 more for a family group ($79.99 versus $34.99). That premium is worthwhile when you will use the added classic catalogs, eligible DLC, upgrade packs or Switch 2-only features. If you only need online multiplayer and standard libraries, the lower tier supplies those core benefits.
Use four questions before paying
- How many Nintendo Accounts need coverage?
- Are the games you play compatible with online play and Save Data Cloud?
- Will you use the Expansion Pack catalogs, selected DLC or Switch 2 features?
- Will the membership remain useful for the entire term, including its renewal date?
Free trial, automatic renewal and cancellation
Seven-day trial terms
Nintendo advertises a seven-day free trial for eligible accounts. Unless automatic renewal is turned off before the trial ends, it converts to a one-month, auto-renewing membership. The trial cannot be redeemed as an Expansion Pack trial, and an account with an active individual or family membership cannot use it.

- Open Nintendo eShop on the console or sign in to Nintendo Account settings.
- Go to Your Subscriptions.
- Select the Nintendo Switch Online membership and choose the control for automatic renewal.
- Confirm that automatic renewal is turned off and note the displayed expiration date.
Nintendo says renewal occurs at the then-current price unless automatic renewal is disabled. Its overview also says that, after turning off a renewal setting, it cannot be turned on again for that same setting; check the labels shown in your current account interface. Turning off renewal stops the next charge but does not normally erase the remaining paid time.
Changing or upgrading a membership
Nintendo supports eligible changes from a standard individual plan to an Expansion Pack individual plan and from a standard family plan to an Expansion Pack family plan through subscription settings. Nintendo’s support information describes discounts based on remaining days for relevant changes, although restrictions can apply; review the price shown before confirming.
- An individual account covered by a family membership cannot independently upgrade itself. The family subscription must be changed for the group.
- An active Expansion Pack membership cannot be changed down to standard according to Nintendo’s support FAQ. Wait until it ends, then select a different plan.
- Expansion Pack access, DLC and upgrade-pack benefits end with the membership. Keep the base game and any separately purchased content in mind when planning a change.
Common mistakes and practical checks
- Assuming a console profile is covered: verify the specific Nintendo Account is in the family group.
- Expecting every game to support cloud saves: check the title’s compatibility before relying on the backup.
- Treating DLC access as ownership: Expansion Pack grants selected content while active and still requires the base game.
- Forgetting the trial conversion: disable auto-renewal before the seven-day period ends if you do not want a paid month.
- Buying Expansion Pack for a Switch 2-only feature on an original Switch: GameChat and GameCube Classics require Switch 2.
- Assuming prices are global: the figures in this article are U.S. prices; Nintendo’s terms and catalogs vary by country.
Bottom-line decision
For one U.S. account that needs ordinary online play and the NES, Super NES and Game Boy catalogs, start with the $19.99 annual standard plan or a shorter individual term. For multiple accounts, the $34.99 family plan is usually the efficient option when everyone joins the same family group. Pay for Expansion Pack only when its additional classic systems, selected DLC, upgrade packs or Switch 2 benefits have clear value to the people you are covering.
