Standard is the better value if you mainly need online multiplayer, cloud saves and the basic retro libraries. Expansion Pack is worth the higher annual price only when you will use its additional classic-game collections, included select DLC or upgrade packs, or Switch 2-exclusive features. The right choice depends on the content your account or household will actually use, not on the higher tier’s name.
At a glance: Standard or Expansion Pack?
Nintendo Switch Online comes in two tiers. Both provide the core online service, while Expansion Pack adds more classic-game libraries and access to selected downloadable content under Nintendo’s conditions. Some of the newest additions, including GameCube Classics and GameChat, require Nintendo Switch 2.
| Choose Standard when… | Choose Expansion Pack when… |
|---|---|
| You primarily play compatible games online. | You will regularly play the added Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis or Virtual Boy libraries. |
| You want Nintendo’s base classic libraries and Save Data Cloud for most compatible games. | You own the applicable full games and will use included DLC such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass or Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise. |
| No one in your household needs a Switch 2-only benefit. | You have a Switch 2 and want GameCube Classics, GameChat or eligible upgrade packs. |
| You want the lowest annual subscription cost. | The added content will be used often enough to justify the premium. |
Expansion Pack is not automatically the better plan. Its value comes from specific additions; if those additions will sit unused, Standard leaves you with the same core online service for less.

| Membership | Standard | Expansion Pack | Extra for Expansion Pack |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual | $19.99 per year | $49.99 per year | $30.00 per year |
| Family | $34.99 per year | $79.99 per year | $45.00 per year |
For one account, the premium is $30 each year. For a family membership, the premium is $45 each year regardless of whether one or all eligible accounts use it. That difference is the amount you are paying for the additional libraries, selected content and applicable Switch 2 benefits.
What the family price means per account
A family membership can cover up to eight Nintendo Accounts in the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group, subject to Nintendo’s group and service rules. If all eight eligible accounts participate, the arithmetic cost is about $4.37 per account per year for Standard ($34.99 divided by eight) and about $10 per account per year for Expansion Pack ($79.99 divided by eight). Those are calculations from Nintendo’s listed prices, not separate Nintendo-published per-person prices.
Do not treat the eight-account limit as a reason to buy Expansion Pack by itself. A family of eight that only needs online play is still paying for unused additions. Conversely, a household with several people who actively use the added libraries or DLC can spread the premium across accounts and get substantially more practical value than a single individual account.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWhat Standard includes
Standard supplies Nintendo Switch Online’s base benefits. The exact service list can change, but Nintendo’s plan information identifies these core inclusions:
- Online play in compatible Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 games.
- Access to Nintendo’s NES, Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy classic libraries.
- Save Data Cloud for most compatible games.
- Nintendo Music and other services listed for the base membership.
“Compatible” matters: online play and cloud-save support are determined by each game’s and service’s compatibility rules. Save Data Cloud is not a blanket backup for every title, and a game’s own terms can limit how cloud data works. Check the current Nintendo information for a particular game before treating the service as a guaranteed backup.
Standard is therefore the sensible baseline for a player who wants multiplayer access and the original retro libraries but has no clear use for the premium catalog. It also avoids paying for Expansion Pack content that may be rotated, expanded or otherwise changed over time.
What Expansion Pack adds
Expansion Pack includes Standard’s benefits and adds more game collections and selected downloadable content. Nintendo’s comparison identifies these additional classic libraries:

| Content area | Availability in Expansion Pack | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo 64 | Included | Catalog and availability can change. |
| Game Boy Advance | Included | Catalog and availability can change. |
| SEGA Genesis | Included | Catalog and availability can change. |
| Virtual Boy | Included | Catalog and availability can change. |
| GameCube Classics | Included for Switch 2 | Nintendo identifies this collection as a Switch 2 exclusive. |
The catalog is a subscription benefit, not a promise that every listed game will remain available forever. Nintendo can add to or alter the collections, so verify the live catalog before upgrading for one particular title.
Included DLC and upgrade packs
Nintendo lists selected content such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass and Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise as Expansion Pack benefits. The membership provides access at no additional charge under Nintendo’s stated conditions, but it does not turn that DLC into permanent ownership. You need the applicable full game, and access depends on maintaining the qualifying membership and meeting Nintendo’s requirements.
That distinction is important when comparing the subscription with buying DLC outright. Expansion Pack can be economical for someone who already owns a supported game and will play its add-on content during the membership term. It is less compelling if you do not own the base game, do not intend to play the add-on, or want continued access after ending the membership.
Nintendo also identifies select upgrade packs among Expansion Pack benefits. Eligibility and platform support vary, and some upgrade-pack benefits are Switch 2-only. Treat each item as a separate check rather than assuming every Expansion Pack addition works on the original Switch.
Switch 2: which benefits require the newer console?
Expansion Pack works across Nintendo’s supported Switch family, but not every benefit works on the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo specifically marks these features as Switch 2-only:
- GameCube Classics.
- GameChat.
- Select upgrade packs.
If you use an original Switch, you can still receive the Expansion Pack libraries and content that Nintendo makes available for that platform, but you should remove those Switch 2-only items from your value calculation. Paying the premium for GameCube Classics or GameChat makes sense only if the household has access to a compatible Switch 2.
Nintendo also says the optional Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller is compatible only with Nintendo Switch 2. It is an accessory for people who want a particular way to play GameCube Classics, not a requirement for joining Expansion Pack. Buying the controller does not make Expansion Pack worthwhile by itself; first decide whether the Switch 2 library is something you will use.

How to decide for an individual account
Pick Standard for online-first play
Standard fits an individual whose main reason for subscribing is online play in compatible games, with the base NES, SNES and Game Boy libraries as a bonus. If you rarely play retro collections and have no supported DLC or Switch 2-only feature in mind, the extra annual payment buys little that you will use.
Pick Expansion Pack for regular use of the added libraries
Expansion Pack becomes easier to justify when you expect to spend meaningful time in the Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis or Virtual Boy collections, or when GameCube Classics are a central reason for owning a Switch 2. A single favorite game can be enough if it is a title you will play repeatedly, but check that it is in the current catalog before subscribing.
Use the DLC test
List the supported DLC or upgrade packs you would otherwise buy, confirm that you own each required full game, and ask whether you will play the add-on during the membership period. The subscription is access while eligible; it is not a permanent license. If your interest is temporary, Expansion Pack may be a practical way to use the content without a separate purchase. If you want to keep playing after cancelling, compare the applicable standalone purchase instead.
How to decide for a household
Count active users, not just Nintendo Accounts
Start with the number of family-group accounts that will actually use Nintendo Switch Online. A family plan can cover up to eight accounts, but an unused account does not create value. Next, mark which users need only online play and which will use the premium libraries, DLC or Switch 2 features.
| Household pattern | Likely choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| One player, one console, online play only | Standard individual | The premium additions are not being used. |
| Several family-group accounts, all mainly online | Standard family | The family price covers multiple accounts without paying for unused premium content. |
| Several accounts, with at least one regular user of added libraries or included DLC | Expansion Pack family | The $45 family premium is shared across the participating accounts. |
| Switch 2 household focused on GameCube Classics or GameChat | Expansion Pack family or individual, based on account count | Those benefits require Switch 2, so the newer console is part of the value calculation. |
A family plan is most compelling when the same subscription genuinely serves multiple people. If only one person will use the premium content and everyone else needs only online play, compare the cost of an Expansion Pack individual membership with a Standard family membership rather than assuming the larger plan is cheaper.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCan you change plans later?
Nintendo allows several upward changes. A Standard individual membership can be changed to an Expansion Pack individual or family membership, and a Standard family plan can be changed to an Expansion Pack family plan. Nintendo says the remaining time on the existing membership can qualify for a discount, subject to its rules.
An active Expansion Pack membership cannot be changed directly to Standard. You must wait until the current term ends and then select a plan. Before making a change, review the subscription settings and Nintendo’s current instructions because the available options, timing and discount calculation are governed by the account’s status and Nintendo’s policies.

- 70 inch Long Cable - Play more freedom no more distance limited. Support turbo feature that What turbo actually does is replicates the same button pushed by the user over and over again at an extremely fast rate,Enhance your gaming experience.
This makes Standard a reasonable starting point when you are uncertain: you can move up later if the added libraries or DLC prove useful. Starting with Expansion Pack does not provide the same immediate route back to Standard during an active term.
What the free trial does—and does not do
Nintendo’s free trial is a way to test Standard’s base membership, not Expansion Pack. Expansion Pack-exclusive libraries and content are not included in the trial.
- An account with an active individual or family membership cannot redeem the trial.
- Nintendo says the trial converts to a one-month, auto-renewing membership at the then-current price unless automatic renewal is turned off by the end of the trial.
- Turn off renewal before the trial ends if you do not want the paid month to begin.
Because the trial excludes premium content, it cannot answer whether Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis, Virtual Boy or GameCube Classics justify Expansion Pack. Use it only to evaluate the base online service and Standard-level features.
Catalog, region and platform caveats
Prices and catalogs are not universal. Nintendo’s US prices apply to memberships used in the United States; other countries can have different prices, currencies, taxes and catalogs. The classic-game lineup and included select content are also changeable. Check Nintendo’s current comparison and service information for your country before paying for a specific game, DLC item or Switch 2 feature.
Keep three separate questions in mind when checking an advertised benefit:
- Is the item in the current catalog? A collection can change, and a particular title should not be assumed to be available indefinitely.
- Does the platform support it? GameCube Classics, GameChat and some upgrade packs require Switch 2.
- Do you meet the content conditions? Included DLC generally requires the corresponding full game and an active qualifying membership.
These checks prevent the most common mismatch: buying Expansion Pack for a feature that is unavailable on the reader’s console, or treating subscription access as ownership.
A practical upgrade checklist
Use this checklist before selecting a tier:
- Identify whether you need an individual or family membership.
- For a family membership, count the accounts that will actually use the service and confirm they belong to the Nintendo Account family group.
- Write down the added classic libraries you expect to play, rather than relying on the word “Expansion.”
- For each DLC or upgrade pack, confirm that you own the required full game and understand that access follows the membership.
- If GameCube Classics, GameChat or an upgrade pack is your reason for upgrading, confirm that you have a Switch 2.
- Check the current price and catalog for your country.
- If starting with Standard, remember that Nintendo permits qualifying upgrades with a remaining-time discount; if starting with Expansion Pack, a direct downgrade to Standard is not available during the active term.
Bottom-line decision
For most online-first players, Standard is the sensible default. It provides the core online service, base classic libraries, Save Data Cloud for most compatible games and other listed services at the lower annual price. Expansion Pack earns its premium when you can name the additions you will use: the extra classic libraries, selected DLC or upgrade packs, or Switch 2-only features. A family plan improves the arithmetic when several eligible accounts participate, but it does not make unused content valuable. Choose the tier that matches your actual games, accounts and console.
