On the original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED, plug a wired headset microphone into the console’s 3.5 mm headphone/microphone jack using a four-pole CTIA plug. On Nintendo Switch 2, you can use that jack or the console’s built-in microphone for GameChat. In every case, the game or chat feature must support microphone input; having the right plug alone does not guarantee voice chat.
Where do I plug a microphone into a Nintendo Switch?
For a wired headset with a microphone, plug its 3.5 mm four-pole CTIA connector into the console’s headphone/microphone jack. The jack handles both headphone audio and microphone input. Nintendo identifies this connector standard for Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, and Switch 2 (Nintendo’s connector guidance).
Use a headset whose 3.5 mm plug is a four-pole CTIA plug—not just a headphone-only plug. Nintendo cautions that it does not guarantee every third-party product will work, and game chat support varies by title.
Which microphone options work on each Switch?
Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED
Connect a wired headset microphone directly to the console’s 3.5 mm headset jack. The console’s jack is the simplest connection for handheld and tabletop play. A four-pole CTIA headset plug is the documented standard; check both the headset specifications and the game’s voice-chat support before relying on it.

Switch 2 GameChat
Switch 2 has a built-in microphone, so you do not need a separate mic to start voice chat in GameChat. Nintendo says it adjusts to surroundings and filters background noise and game audio. For audio-only chat, a USB camera is not required; GameChat can include up to 12 participants using the built-in mic. See Nintendo’s GameChat guide.
If you prefer an external microphone or headset on Switch 2, Nintendo’s troubleshooting guidance covers USB-C connection to the console, a USB port on the dock, and the audio jack on the console or Switch 2 Pro Controller. For a wired headset through the audio jack, use the 3.5 mm four-pole CTIA standard. If a USB audio device is not detected, try reconnecting it to another port.

Bluetooth headsets on Switch 2
A Bluetooth headset can play incoming GameChat audio, but its microphone cannot provide GameChat voice input. For microphone input, use the built-in mic or a compatible wired or USB microphone instead. Nintendo documents this distinction in its Switch 2 microphone troubleshooting guide.

Does a Switch have a microphone jack?
Yes. Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED, and Switch 2 have a 3.5 mm headphone/microphone jack that supports a four-pole CTIA stereo mini plug, according to Nintendo’s support guidance. A headset with a compatible plug can carry both headphone audio and mic input through that jack.

That connector does not mean every game accepts microphone input, nor does it certify every headset or adapter. Confirm the specific game’s chat features and the accessory’s connector type.
Why is my Switch mic not working?
Confirm that the game or feature supports voice chat
Microphone support depends on the software. Check the game’s support information and voice-chat settings. Nintendo directs Fortnite players to Epic for in-game voice-chat help; a working headset connection by itself does not enable chat in an unsupported title.

Check the connection and mute control
- For a wired headset, make sure the plug is fully seated in the console’s 3.5 mm jack and that it is a four-pole CTIA plug.
- Check the headset’s mute switch or button. Some headsets mute the microphone when the control is pressed in; PowerA describes this behavior in its headset manual.
- For a Switch 2 USB microphone or headset that is not detected, reconnect it to a different USB port.
Check Switch 2 GameChat input settings
- Open System Settings > Audio.
- Check that the intended microphone is selected and raise its input volume if needed.
- Choose Test Microphone and speak to check whether the input registers.
- Make sure nothing is blocking the console’s built-in microphone, or reconnect an external USB or audio-jack device.
These checks follow Nintendo’s Switch 2 microphone troubleshooting steps.

For Fortnite voice chat while docked
Epic warns that a 3.5 mm headset may have voice-chat issues when the console is docked. For that specific Fortnite situation, Epic recommends trying a USB receiver, USB headset, or USB-to-3.5 mm adapter. This is a workaround for the documented docked Fortnite case, not a general requirement for Switch microphones. See Epic’s Fortnite voice-chat guidance.
