Nintendo Switch Lite is a compact, handheld-only member of the Nintendo Switch family. Its controls are permanently attached to the console, it runs Switch games that support handheld mode, and it cannot send video to a television. You can use it on a table with a separate stand and compatible wireless controllers, and you can expand its storage with a compatible microSD card.
What Nintendo Switch Lite is
Nintendo Switch Lite is a smaller Switch-family console designed specifically for portable play. Unlike a standard Nintendo Switch, it is not a console that changes between handheld, tabletop, and TV use by removing or attaching controllers. The two control sections are integrated into the body, making the unit lighter and simpler to carry.

Nintendo describes it as a dedicated handheld gaming device. That description matters: Lite runs Switch software, but its hardware does not include the components needed to output a game image to a television. Nintendo’s official product statement is explicit: “As a dedicated handheld gaming device, Nintendo Switch Lite does not support output to a TV.” See the Nintendo UK product and specification page for the current regional specifications.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn practical terms, Lite is a good fit when you expect to play in your hands, while travelling, or away from a television. It is a poor fit if a TV screen, detachable controllers, or guaranteed access to every motion- and controller-dependent Switch feature is important.

Which play modes are supported?
Nintendo’s compatibility information separates Switch play into three modes. Lite supports handheld mode. TV mode is not supported. Tabletop mode is supported only when you add the appropriate stand and compatible wireless controllers.
| Play mode | Switch Lite support | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld | Supported | The built-in screen and attached controls are the normal way to play. |
| TV | Not supported | Lite cannot output video to a television; a dock, USB-C adapter, or cable does not change that. |
| Tabletop | Supported with accessories | Use a separately sold adjustable or licensed stand and compatible wireless controllers. Lite has no built-in kickstand. |
A stand only holds the console while you look at its own screen. It does not turn Lite into a TV-connected Switch.
Can it play every Nintendo Switch game?
Lite plays Switch games that support handheld mode, but “Switch game” does not automatically mean “every feature works on Lite by itself.” Nintendo recommends checking the play-mode icons on the game packaging, the game’s Nintendo.com details, or its Nintendo eShop listing before buying.

Look specifically for handheld-mode support. If a title lists handheld mode, it is the category intended to run directly on Lite. A title that relies on TV mode or tabletop-only arrangements is not a suitable standalone Lite game.
Games that need separate controllers
Some games are handheld-compatible but include activities designed around detached Joy-Con hardware. Nintendo identifies functions that are unavailable from Lite’s built-in controls, including HD Rumble, the Joy-Con infrared motion camera, and certain Joy-Con motion-sensor features. Pairing supported wireless Joy-Con can provide some of those capabilities.

- Features a sleek, unibody design with fully integrated controls and a built in +Control Pad
- Compatible with all physical and digital Nintendo Switch games that support Handheld mode
Nintendo gives Mario Tennis Aces Swing Mode as an example of a feature that requires Joy-Con. The game can therefore be usable on Lite while a particular mode still requires controllers bought separately. Joy-Con also need a way to charge: Nintendo says you need a Joy-Con charging grip or a standard Nintendo Switch console for charging.
How to avoid an incompatible purchase
- Open the game’s listing in Nintendo eShop or Nintendo’s product details page.
- Confirm that the handheld-mode icon is present.
- Read the controller and accessory notes for motion, infrared, HD Rumble, or multiplayer features.
- If a feature requires detached Joy-Con, decide whether buying and charging a pair is worthwhile before purchasing the game.
Nintendo Switch Lite specifications
The figures below are Nintendo UK specifications for the current product page accessed in 2026. Dimensions include the body measurement Nintendo lists; the separate thickness figure accounts for the area around the analog sticks and ZL/ZR protrusions.
| Specification | Nintendo’s listed figure |
|---|---|
| Dimensions | 91.1 × 208 × 13.9 mm |
| Maximum thickness | 28.4 mm around the analog sticks and ZL/ZR protrusions |
| Weight | Approximately 275 g |
| Screen | 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen |
| Screen resolution | 1280 × 720 |
| Internal system memory | 32 GB, with approximately 6.2 GB reserved for system use |
| Battery | 3,570 mAh internal lithium-ion battery |
| Charging time | Approximately three hours in sleep mode |
The 32 GB figure is the console’s total system memory, not the space available for games and saves. Nintendo reserves approximately 6.2 GB for system use, leaving less space for downloaded software than the headline capacity suggests.
Battery life and charging expectations
Nintendo says Lite can provide more than six hours of battery life, but actual endurance varies with the game and usage conditions. As a manufacturer example, Nintendo gives roughly four hours when playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. That is an estimate rather than a guaranteed runtime for every title.
Brightness, wireless communication, speakers, software workload, and sleep settings can all affect how quickly the battery falls. For a trip, charge the console before leaving and carry a suitable USB-C charging solution that complies with Nintendo’s requirements. Nintendo lists approximately three hours to charge in sleep mode; charging while playing can take longer depending on what the game is doing.

Battery-care basics
- Use sleep mode when you pause instead of leaving the game running on the active screen.
- Reduce screen brightness when maximum battery life matters more than visibility.
- Install system and game updates while you have reliable power and internet access.
- Do not treat the “more than six hours” figure as a promise for demanding software.
Storage: 32 GB internally, microSD expansion externally
Lite includes 32 GB of system memory, with about 6.2 GB reserved for the operating system and other system data. Download-heavy games can therefore fill the usable space quickly. Nintendo supports compatible microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards, sold separately. Nintendo’s UK information says an internet update is required before using a microSDXC card.
To expand storage, power the console down as directed in Nintendo’s instructions, insert the compatible card into the microSD slot, and allow the system to format or prepare it if prompted. A card can hold downloaded games, updates, downloadable content, and screenshots, but it does not remove the need for the internal system memory.
Choosing a card without overbuying
Nintendo does not prescribe one capacity for every owner. Choose based on how many digital games and updates you expect to keep installed. Someone who mainly buys physical game cards and keeps only a few downloads needs less space than a digital-only player with a large library. Cards are separate purchases, and their capacity, speed, and price vary by region and retailer.
Controls and optional Joy-Con
The analog sticks, buttons, directional controls, and shoulder controls are built into Lite. You cannot slide them off as you can with detachable Joy-Con. This makes the console compact, but it also means a damaged control section generally cannot be swapped for a spare Joy-Con while you continue playing.
Lite can pair with compatible wireless Joy-Con for games or activities that need detached controllers. That can restore some motion, infrared, or rumble functions, and it allows another person to use a controller in supported multiplayer situations. The controllers are sold separately. If you buy them without a standard Switch console, plan for a Joy-Con charging grip or another compatible charging method.

Tabletop play: what you need
Although Lite has no built-in stand, Nintendo lists tabletop play as available with a separately sold adjustable stand or a licensed play stand and compatible wireless controllers. Nintendo’s support documentation names the Adjustable Charging Stand for Nintendo Switch and licensed accessories such as HORI’s Dual USB PlayStand as examples.
- Place Lite in a stable stand that is designed to hold the console.
- Pair compatible wireless controllers through the controller settings.
- Start a game whose control scheme supports the controllers and tabletop use.
- Keep the console connected to power if the session will exceed its remaining battery.
This setup uses the Lite screen. It does not provide TV output, even when the console is in a stand.
Local and online multiplayer
Nintendo says up to eight Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite systems can link for local wireless multiplayer. The exact number of players and whether each person needs a copy of the game depend on the individual title.
For compatible online games, Nintendo’s US product information says a Nintendo Switch Online membership and Nintendo Account are required. Internet access is also required, and Nintendo notes that online service is not available in all countries. Check the current terms for your region before relying on online play.

Who should choose Nintendo Switch Lite?
Lite is a strong match when
- You primarily play in handheld mode.
- You want a compact console weighing approximately 275 g.
- You already have access to a television-free gaming space, such as travel, commuting, or a bedroom.
- You are comfortable checking handheld-mode compatibility before buying games.
- You prefer integrated controls and do not need to detach them routinely.
Consider another Switch-family model when
- Playing on a television is a requirement.
- You want detachable controllers included with the console.
- You expect to use motion, infrared, or HD Rumble features without buying extra controllers.
- You want a built-in stand for tabletop sessions.
These are feature-based distinctions rather than a statement about current prices, stock, colors, or regional bundles, all of which can change. Compare the current specifications and package contents for your country before buying.

Buying and setup checklist
- Confirm the screen destination. If you need TV play, do not buy Lite: Nintendo does not support TV output on this model.
- Check your game list. Verify handheld-mode support and note any Joy-Con requirements for motion, infrared, rumble, or special modes.
- Plan storage. Start with the 32 GB system memory and account for approximately 6.2 GB reserved for system use; add a compatible microSD card if your downloads will exceed the remaining space.
- Plan charging. Nintendo lists about three hours in sleep mode for a full charge and more than six hours of possible play, with actual life varying by software and use.
- Add accessories only for a reason. A stand is for tabletop viewing, and Joy-Con are for supported games or multiplayer; neither accessory creates TV output.
- Check regional details. Confirm the current product page, online-service availability, warranty terms, and included accessories for your market.
Common misconceptions and fixes
“A dock or USB-C adapter will make Lite work on a TV.”
It will not. Nintendo explicitly excludes TV output from Lite. A dock can provide a place to store or charge compatible equipment, but it cannot add a video-output function that the console does not support.
“Every Switch game works exactly the same on Lite.”
Compatibility is title- and feature-specific. Check the handheld-mode icon and controller notes. A game can run in handheld mode while one of its activities requires separate Joy-Con.
“Tabletop play is impossible.”
Tabletop play is possible with a separate stand and compatible wireless controllers. Lite’s screen remains the display, and the setup still cannot output to a television.
“The full 32 GB is available for games.”
Approximately 6.2 GB is reserved for system use, so usable space is lower. A compatible microSD card provides expansion, subject to Nintendo’s format and update requirements.
