Start with Nintendo’s software checks before opening a Joy-Con: confirm the controller is recognized, update the Switch and Joy-Con, remove any cover or skin, and calibrate the stick at System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Control Sticks. If the stick cannot be calibrated or still moves by itself after these checks, stop troubleshooting and arrange service. In the UK, EEA and Switzerland, Nintendo currently offers qualifying drift repairs at no charge, including wear-and-tear cases after the 24-month warranty; U.S. and Canadian owners can submit an online service request for the affected Joy-Con.

What Joy-Con drift is—and what it is not

Drift is an incorrect control-stick input: your character, camera or cursor moves even when you are not touching the stick, or the stick does not respond correctly when you tilt it. The fault can come from a calibration or setup problem, dirt around the sensing parts, a worn joystick, or damage on the controller’s circuit board.

First rule out connection and control-mapping problems. With the Joy-Con attached to the console, open the Controllers screen and verify that the affected controller appears. A wrench icon means controls have been remapped; that can look like a defective stick even though the hardware is responding to a different assignment. If the Joy-Con is not recognized at all, use Nintendo’s connection-troubleshooting procedure rather than treating the symptom as drift.

The safest order of operations

Stage What you do Risk and skill Typical decision
Recognition and mapping Check the Controllers screen and look for a remapping wrench icon. Very low risk; no tools. Fix connection or mapping first if the Joy-Con is not behaving as a controller.
Updates Install the latest console system update and Joy-Con controller update. Very low risk; a few minutes. Retest before any physical work.
External interference Remove skins, covers and similar accessories around the affected stick. Very low risk. Continue if the symptom remains.
Calibration Run Nintendo’s Control Sticks calibration and follow the prompts. Very low risk; a few minutes. If calibration fails, Nintendo says the Joy-Con needs service.
Exterior cleaning Clean around the stick without opening the shell. Low risk, but avoid flooding the mechanism. Useful when debris is the likely cause.
Internal cleaning Open the Joy-Con and clean the flexible circuit and contacts with suitable electronics cleaner or isopropyl alcohol. Moderate risk; precision tools and a repair guide required. Consider warranty and service exclusions before opening.
Joystick replacement Replace a worn analog stick, or install a compatible TMR-style replacement. Moderate difficulty; iFixit’s guides list about 30 minutes. Most effective DIY fix for a worn stick.
Board-level repair Diagnose connectors or an input-management chip and perform fine-pitch soldering. Advanced; high risk for an average fixer. Use a professional repairer or replace the controller.

1. Confirm the Joy-Con and symptom

  1. Attach the suspect Joy-Con to the Switch.
  2. Open the Controllers screen and check that the console registers it.
  3. Test the stick in a game or controller-test screen while keeping your thumb completely off it.
  4. Look for the wrench icon that indicates remapped controls.

If the Joy-Con does not register, the problem may be the rail, wireless connection or another connection fault. Resolve that with Nintendo’s separate connection steps before diagnosing drift. A controller that registers normally but reports movement at rest is the case this guide addresses.

2. Update both pieces of software

Install updates before calibration. On the console, go to System Settings > System > System Update. Then update the controller through System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Update Controllers. Nintendo and iFixit both place these updates near the beginning of troubleshooting because outdated firmware can make testing misleading.

Keep the Joy-Con attached or connected as required by the on-screen instructions, let each update finish, and then repeat the same stick test. Do not assume a console update also updated the controller; they are separate operations.

3. Remove covers, skins and other interference

Take off any shell, silicone cover, skin or accessory that touches the Joy-Con or restricts the stick’s travel. Nintendo lists removal of these accessories as a troubleshooting step. Check that the stick can move freely in every direction and returns to center without rubbing. Retest with the controller bare before moving to cleaning or disassembly.

4. Calibrate the control stick

Use Nintendo’s calibration screen even if the symptom seems mechanical:

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Select Controllers and Sensors.
  3. Select Calibrate Control Sticks.
  4. Choose the affected stick when prompted.
  5. “Fully tilt the control stick in any single direction for a few seconds on the controller you want to calibrate,” then follow the on-screen prompts.

After calibration, test the neutral position and each direction. If the result is not reflected immediately, put the console to sleep and wake it, or press the Joy-Con’s SYNC button once and then press another button to power it on again. Test once more after the controller reconnects.

A stick that calibrates and stays centered was likely affected by setup, mapping or a temporary reading error. A stick that will not complete calibration, repeatedly loses its center, or still produces movement at rest has reached Nintendo’s service threshold. Nintendo’s support instruction is explicit: “If the control sticks cannot be calibrated, the non-working Joy-Con controller will need to be serviced. Do not send in the console.”

5. Try low-risk exterior cleaning

Dust and grime can interfere with the sensing surfaces. Turn the console off or disconnect the Joy-Con before cleaning. Move the stick gently through its full range and remove visible debris around the boot with a dry, lint-free swab or a soft brush. Keep liquid away from openings and do not force debris deeper into the mechanism.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Exterior cleaning is the sensible stopping point if you want to preserve Nintendo service eligibility or do not have repair experience. If the stick improves only briefly, that points more strongly to contamination inside the joystick or physical wear rather than a calibration error.

6. Decide whether internal cleaning is worth the risk

Internal cleaning requires opening the Joy-Con. iFixit’s procedure uses electronics contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab on the flexible circuit and metal contacts. This is more invasive than cleaning around the boot: the shell, screws, battery and internal parts must be handled without tearing cables or losing fasteners.

  • Use only a product intended for electronics and allow all solvent to evaporate before powering the controller.
  • Follow a guide for the exact Joy-Con side; left- and right-stick layouts are not identical.
  • Do not flood the joystick. iFixit warns that a no-disassembly approach can disturb lubricant and create additional problems.
  • Understand that opening, modifying or using an unauthorized repair can affect regional service exclusions.

Internal cleaning is most defensible when debris is the likely fault, the controller is already outside a service option, and you accept the possibility of making the problem worse. If the stick is worn, cleaning may provide only temporary improvement.

7. Replace a worn joystick

When calibration and cleaning do not hold, iFixit states that “Replacing the joystick itself is the most effective tactic in this case.” Replacement is a component-level repair, not a software reset: the Joy-Con must be opened, the original joystick disconnected or desoldered as applicable, and the replacement installed accurately.

Replacement choices

  • Standard compatible analog stick: a direct replacement for the original style. Confirm compatibility with the exact Joy-Con model before buying.
  • TMR-style stick: a magnetic-sensing design. iFixit describes TMR or Hall-effect-style replacements as more resilient to grime and dirt than the analog sticks Nintendo uses.
  • Repair tools: a precision screwdriver and opening toolkit, plus electronics cleaning supplies. A generic household screwdriver can damage small screws.

iFixit rates its left- and right-stick replacement guides as moderate difficulty and lists about 30 minutes for each. That estimate assumes the correct tools, a replacement part and careful work; it is not a guarantee for a first repair or a damaged screw.

After installing a stick

  1. Reassemble the controller without pinching the battery or ribbon cables.
  2. Reconnect the Joy-Con and confirm that every button works.
  3. Run System Settings > Controllers and Sensors > Calibrate Control Sticks.
  4. Test the neutral position, full travel and diagonal movement in several games or controller-test screens.

8. Know when the fault is on the circuit board

Persistent drift after a confirmed-good replacement can indicate connector damage or a fault in the input-management circuitry. iFixit says chip replacement requires small-surface-mount soldering and is beyond the average fixer. Do not keep swapping sticks or applying cleaner when the evidence points to the board; seek a professional repairer or replace the Joy-Con.

When to stop DIY and send the Joy-Con to Nintendo

Use official service when calibration fails, the controller remains faulty after the documented checks, or you do not want to risk opening it. Nintendo’s U.S. guidance says to submit the non-working Joy-Con only; do not send the console. The online Joy-Con service request is documented for customers in the United States and Canada.

UK, EEA and Switzerland

Nintendo’s current policy says repairs for “responsiveness syndrome” relating to control sticks are conducted at no charge by official Nintendo repair centres for consumers who purchased the product in the EEA, UK or Switzerland. The policy says this continues until further notice, applies to wear-and-tear cases, and can apply after the 24-month manufacturer warranty has expired.

The same policy lists exclusions. No-charge treatment may not apply where the issue involves a third-party accessory, commercial or rental use, accidental damage, negligence, modification, an unauthorized repair, or an altered or removed serial number. Check the policy for your purchase region before opening the controller or choosing a third-party repair.

Other regions

Service eligibility, shipping arrangements and charges depend on the country where the Joy-Con was purchased. Use the Nintendo support page for that region and follow its current instructions rather than assuming the UK/EEA/Switzerland policy or the U.S./Canada online process applies to you.

Choosing the right path

Your result Best next step Why
Joy-Con not recognized Follow connection troubleshooting. This is not yet a confirmed drift diagnosis.
Wrench icon or wrong actions Review button mapping. Remapped controls can imitate hardware failure.
Calibration succeeds and drift disappears Keep using the controller and monitor it. No disassembly is needed.
Calibration fails Arrange Nintendo service. Nintendo identifies an uncalibratable stick as requiring service.
Brief improvement after exterior or internal cleaning Plan for joystick replacement or service. Temporary improvement suggests contamination or wear remains.
Drift remains after a correct joystick replacement Use professional board repair or replace the controller. The fault may be a connector or input-management chip.
Controller is covered by a regional no-charge policy Use official service before opening it. Disassembly or unauthorized repair can be an exclusion.

Common mistakes that make drift repairs worse

  • Skipping recognition checks: a disconnected Joy-Con cannot be fixed by calibration.
  • Updating only the console: controller firmware has its own update command.
  • Calibrating with a cover installed: the accessory can restrict travel and corrupt the result.
  • Pouring cleaner into the stick: excess liquid can move lubricant or reach parts that should remain dry.
  • Opening a controller that may qualify for official service: modification or unauthorized repair can affect eligibility in some regions.
  • Replacing parts without recalibrating: a new stick still needs the console’s calibration procedure.
  • Attempting chip repair without microsoldering skills: board-level work can permanently damage pads and traces.

Bottom line for a drifting Joy-Con

Work from least invasive to most invasive: confirm the connection and mapping, update the console and controller, remove accessories, calibrate, and try careful exterior cleaning. If the stick cannot calibrate, Nintendo says to service the Joy-Con. If cleaning does not last, a compatible joystick replacement is the most effective DIY repair identified by iFixit, while persistent failure after replacement points to board-level damage. Check your region’s Nintendo policy before opening the controller; eligible UK, EEA and Switzerland repairs are currently offered at no charge, and U.S. and Canadian owners have a Joy-Con-only online service route.
