There is no universal winner. Nintendo stopped selling new Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on January 30, 2026. If you already bought a voucher pair, redeeming it can beat an eShop sale—but only when the two eligible games you actually want are worth more than what you paid for the pair, after accounting for membership, expiry and account restrictions. If you do not already have valid vouchers, compare the game’s current eShop price with the price you are willing to wait for during a sale.
Are Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers still available?
No. Nintendo’s discontinuation notice says new voucher purchases ended at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time on January 30, 2026. There is no current option to buy a new pair and then compare its price with a sale.

The decision still matters for people who purchased vouchers before the cutoff. Each voucher remains usable for 12 months—365 days—from its purchase date, provided it has not expired and the game selected is still eligible. The end of sales did not immediately cancel already purchased, valid vouchers.

Yes, if the voucher is still within its 365-day term and all redemption conditions are met. A voucher is linked to the Nintendo Account that bought it, cannot be transferred or refunded, and requires an active paid Nintendo Switch Online membership when you redeem it. It can be redeemed for one eligible Nintendo Switch digital game. Voucher redemption does not cover Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive games.

- It’s designed for your Nintendo eShop purchases—no credit card required.

- Expiry: each unused voucher expires 365 days after the pair’s purchase date.
- Account: the purchasing account owns the vouchers; they are not transferable.
- Membership: an active paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is required at redemption.
- Eligibility: only games in Nintendo’s eligible voucher catalog qualify, and that catalog can change.
- Platform: Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive games are not covered by the Switch voucher program.
Check the voucher status in the purchasing account and confirm the game’s eligibility immediately before redeeming. A title that was eligible when you bought the vouchers is not guaranteed to remain in the catalog indefinitely.
The practical choice: redeem an existing voucher or buy during an eShop sale
There are now only two actionable paths:
| Choice | Who can use it | What determines the cost | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redeem an existing voucher | Someone with an unused, unexpired voucher and an eligible game | The amount actually paid for the voucher pair, plus any membership cost incurred solely for redemption | The voucher expires, or the second voucher is used on a game the buyer would not otherwise purchase |
| Buy through the eShop | Any account that can purchase the game in its region | The current price, or a future sale price if the buyer waits | The desired sale may end before purchase, and prices change |
A gift card does not create a third discount option. Nintendo eShop card balance is a payment method for games and content, not a price reduction under the cited U.S. terms.
How to calculate whether your voucher is worth using
Use the exact games, prices and dates in your situation rather than a theoretical “up to” saving. Nintendo’s own condition is that promotional value requires redeeming both vouchers for games whose cumulative price is higher than the voucher pair’s purchase price.
“To receive promotional value, Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers must be redeemed for two games with a cumulative price that is higher than the purchase price of the Nintendo Switch Game Vouchers.”
Step 1: Find the pair’s actual purchase price
Use the receipt or transaction history for the voucher pair. Do not substitute a remembered launch price, a current bundle price or the regular price of a different offer. The amount you paid is the baseline against which the two games must be measured.
Step 2: List the games you would genuinely buy
Write down two eligible games you would otherwise purchase. If you want only one title, do not assign imaginary value to the second voucher. A voucher is not a saving when it persuades you to acquire a game you would not have bought.

Step 3: Record current prices and sale prices
For each title, record the present eShop price in your account’s region and any sale price currently displayed. Prices, promotions and eligibility can change, so a price seen in an old article or on another region’s storefront is not a valid comparison.

Step 4: Add any membership cost you would incur
You need a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership at redemption. If you already subscribe, there may be no additional out-of-pocket cost attributable to the voucher. If you would buy membership only to redeem the vouchers, include the current membership charge in your calculation. Do not invent or reuse a membership price from another country or plan.
Step 5: Apply the two-voucher formula
For two games, calculate:
Voucher advantage = (price you would otherwise pay for game 1 + price you would otherwise pay for game 2) − voucher-pair purchase price − incremental membership cost.
Use the prices you would really pay, not necessarily the regular prices. If you would wait for a sale rather than buy at full price, compare the voucher pair with that expected purchase plan. A positive result means the voucher route costs less for this basket; a negative result means buying the games separately is cheaper.
Step 6: Test the expiry scenario
Ask whether both vouchers can be used before the expiry date. If one will lapse, value the pair as one usable voucher—not as two full-price discounts. An unused, expired voucher has no purchase value you can recover.

Can you use a Game Voucher on a sale game?
Generally, no stacking should be assumed. Nintendo’s terms say vouchers generally cannot be combined with another sale or promotion unless Nintendo specifies an exception for that particular offer. A voucher redemption is therefore not automatically cheaper than buying the same game during a sale.

Compare the two routes separately:
- Voucher route: redeem one voucher for the eligible title and account for the pair’s purchase cost and any membership cost.
- Sale route: buy the title at the displayed sale price, with no assumption that a voucher can reduce it further.
If a title is currently discounted below the effective per-game cost of your voucher pair, buying it on sale may be the better use of cash. You can reserve the voucher for another eligible game only if that later choice remains within the voucher’s validity period.
Worked examples without assuming today’s prices
Example: two full-price eligible games
Suppose your receipt shows what you paid for a pair, and the two games you truly want have current prices whose sum is higher than that receipt amount. If you already have the required membership and both vouchers expire after you plan to redeem them, the pair produces promotional value under Nintendo’s stated rule. The exact saving is the price difference between that sum and your actual pair cost.
Example: one game is on sale
Imagine one eligible game is temporarily discounted. Compare its sale price plus the price you would pay for the second game with the voucher pair’s purchase cost. Because vouchers generally cannot be stacked with sales, the discounted cash purchase may beat redeeming a voucher for that title. Use the voucher only if the remaining eligible game still makes the overall pair worthwhile.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteExample: you would buy only one game
If you have no genuine second purchase, compare the single game’s sale price with the value of using one voucher and accept that the other voucher may expire. Do not call the voucher pair a saving merely because the game’s regular price exceeds half of what you paid; the unused voucher still represents money at risk.
Example: the membership is purchased only for redemption
Add the membership charge to the voucher route. A pair that appears cheaper before membership can become more expensive once that incremental cost is included. If you already maintain a paid membership for online play, treat the decision differently because you are not adding the full membership price solely for this purchase.
Why old price examples cannot identify today’s winner
Nintendo’s January 13, 2025 voucher explainer displayed regular prices of $59.99 for seven listed games and $69.99 for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Those figures are historical examples from that dated article, not today’s prices and not a guarantee that every listed title remains eligible.

Nintendo explicitly says savings depend on the games selected and that the eligible catalog can change. No one can name a current sale winner without the specific game, the account’s region and the live eShop price. Treat any article that declares one universal percentage or winner as incomplete unless it states those variables.
Regional, account and catalog checks
Before redeeming, verify all of the following in the same account and storefront you will use for purchase:
- Region: the eShop price and catalog must match your account’s country or region.
- Eligibility: the exact edition of the game must appear as voucher eligible at the time of redemption.
- Platform: the game must be a qualifying Nintendo Switch title, not a Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive release.
- Account ownership: redeeming on a different account is not a workaround for the purchasing account restriction.
- Membership status: confirm that the paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is active before checkout.
- Expiry: check the purchase date and ensure the planned redemption occurs within 365 days.
If any check fails, the apparent voucher saving is not available for that purchase. Recheck the storefront immediately before spending money because sale prices and catalog eligibility are volatile.
What to do if you do not have vouchers
Do not search for a “new voucher price” to compare with a sale. Nintendo no longer sells new pairs. Your practical options are:
- Buy the game at its current eShop price if you want to play now.
- Wait for a sale if the current price is above what you are willing to pay.
- Use an eShop gift card as a funding method if convenient, while remembering that balance itself is not a discount.
Waiting is a timing decision, not a voucher calculation. Set the price you consider acceptable and buy when the eShop displays it; do not rely on the historical prices in Nintendo’s 2025 explainer.

How eShop gift cards fit into the decision
Nintendo’s U.S. terms describe eShop card balance as usable for games and other digital content. The balance is limited to U.S. accounts, becomes nontransferable once redeemed, and does not expire under those terms. It is still a way to fund a purchase, not evidence that the game is discounted.

Confirm the card’s region, current terms and availability before buying. A card cannot restore an expired voucher, make an ineligible game eligible or combine with a voucher promotion.
Common mistakes that make the math wrong
Using the regular price when you would wait for a sale
If your real alternative is to wait, compare with the price you reasonably expect to pay during a sale, not today’s full price. Otherwise the calculated “saving” exaggerates the voucher’s value.
Counting a game you would not buy
Buying a second title solely to avoid wasting a voucher is spending, not saving. Include only games already in your plan.
Assuming sales and vouchers stack
Nintendo’s general terms do not permit stacking unless an offer expressly says otherwise. Check the terms for the specific promotion rather than treating a sale banner and a voucher as cumulative discounts.
Ignoring membership cost
An active paid membership is a redemption requirement. Include its incremental cost when you would subscribe only for this transaction.
Waiting past expiry
Track the 365-day deadline from the pair’s purchase date. A later sale is not useful if the voucher expires first.
Comparing another region’s price
Exchange-rate conversions and screenshots from another country’s eShop do not establish what your account will pay. Use your own storefront.

| Item to record | Your figure | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Voucher pair amount actually paid | From your receipt or account history | Sets the break-even baseline |
| Game 1 eligibility and current price | Check your regional eShop | Determines whether voucher redemption is possible |
| Game 2 eligibility and current price | Check your regional eShop | Both vouchers must have a worthwhile use |
| Current sale prices | Record separately from regular prices | A sale may be cheaper than using a voucher |
| Incremental membership cost | Only the cost incurred for redemption | Required for an honest net comparison |
| Expiry date | 365 days after purchase | Determines whether both vouchers can be used |
After filling it in, compare the total cash you would spend under each plan. Choose the voucher route only when it covers games you want, remains valid, satisfies the membership requirement and costs less than your realistic eShop alternative.
Bottom line for 2026
Existing valid vouchers can still save money, but only on a case-by-case basis. Use the pair’s actual purchase price, two specific eligible games, live regional prices, any sale prices, the membership cost you would newly incur and the expiry date. If the arithmetic does not produce a clear advantage—or if one voucher would go unused—buy the game during a sale or wait for one. For everyone without a valid voucher, Nintendo’s January 30, 2026 cutoff ends the voucher-versus-sale comparison: the choice is the current eShop price now or a lower price later.
