There is no universal winner. For each title, compare the current regional eShop sale price (including tax) with the delivered price of a condition-matched used cartridge. Digital usually wins on convenience and immediate access; a used physical copy can cost less and may retain resale or lending value. Your region, edition, shipping, cartridge condition, timing and willingness to resell determine the better deal.
The short answer: compare total cost, not the sticker price
A digital sale and a used cartridge are only comparable when they are the same game, edition and region. Nintendo’s US storefront shows a game’s current sale price and regular price, but promotions change over time. Check the listing immediately before buying at Nintendo’s official US Sales and Deals page.

For a physical copy, the visible listing price is not the full cost. Add shipping and applicable tax, then check whether the cartridge is loose, includes its case, or has the inserts and artwork you care about. A low-priced listing with missing packaging may not be equivalent to a complete copy.

Decision table: when each option tends to make sense
| Factor | Digital eShop purchase | Used physical cartridge |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front price | Use the current sale price for your regional Nintendo account, plus applicable tax. | Use the actual listing price plus shipping and tax; compare the same edition and condition. |
| Price certainty | Clear at checkout, but the sale can end or change. | Varies by seller, condition, completeness and availability. |
| Access | Download directly; no cartridge swapping. | Insert the cartridge and keep it available whenever you play. |
| Lending | No physical item to hand to another person. | Can be lent while you still own the cartridge. |
| Resale | No normal second-hand sale for the downloaded license. | Can be listed later, with uncertain net proceeds after fees and shipping. |
| Condition risk | No cartridge wear or missing case issue. | Inspect the seller’s grade, photos, label and included case or inserts. |
| Best fit | A deep sale, frequent on-the-go play, or a preference for a digital library. | A lower delivered price, interest in lending, or a game you may resell. |
Step 1: Lock down the exact game and edition
Write down the title, region, edition and included content before opening either store. “Standard,” “deluxe,” “complete,” bundle and code-in-box editions can have different contents and values. A used cartridge may also be a regional variant while the digital listing is tied to another storefront.
- Match the exact title, not merely the franchise or a similarly named release.
- Confirm whether downloadable content, a season pass or a special edition is included.
- Check language and region requirements if you import a cartridge.
- Make sure the physical listing is for a playable Switch cartridge, not an empty case or download-code card.
For US buyers, use Nintendo’s US storefront as the digital reference. Do not copy a tracker price shown in another currency into a US calculation. Prices and discounts are regional and title-specific.
Step 2: Record the real digital cost
Check the current sale and regular price
On the Nintendo US sales page, note both the displayed sale price and the regular price, then proceed to checkout far enough to see applicable tax. The sale price is time-sensitive: an offer can expire before you purchase, and the next promotion may use a different discount.
A price-history service can provide context. NTPrices tracks regional eShop prices and historical changes, helping you judge whether today’s discount is unusually low for that title. Its page snapshot accessed October 13, 2026, reported “49,509 Games tracked,” “48+ eShop regions,” “8,080 On sale right now” and “1.9M Prices logged.” Those are tracker-scale figures, not evidence that digital games are generally cheaper than used cartridges.
Include account and storage considerations
Digital cost is more than the number beside the download button when storage or account use affects your decision. Confirm that the Nintendo account and region you intend to use are the ones associated with the purchase. If your console has limited free space, include the practical cost of managing storage or adding a compatible memory card in your own budget; do not treat that as a universal per-game charge.
Step 3: Calculate the delivered used-cartridge cost
Use this formula for a physical offer:
Delivered physical cost = listing price + shipping + applicable tax.
Then inspect the actual listing rather than relying on a blended “used” number. NTPrices’ used-game page describes offer categories and collected marketplace offers, but comparison tools may combine condition categories. Open the seller’s listing to verify the grade, photographs, seller notes, cartridge label, case and inserts.

Condition questions that change the value
- Is the cartridge tested, and does the seller describe any reading or save issues?
- Is the original case included, or is the game loose?
- Are the cover art, manuals or inserts present if completeness matters to you?
- Are scratches, label damage, water exposure or replacement parts disclosed?
- Is shipping insured or protected, and what happens if the item arrives different from the description?
A loose cartridge can be the right choice for someone who only wants to play. A complete copy may be worth paying more for if you expect to resell it or care about collecting. Compare like with like rather than subtracting a loose-copy price from a complete digital-equivalent expectation.
Step 4: Estimate resale without fooling yourself
To model a possible future recovery, use completed sales for comparable condition, not the highest current asking price. Price guides use different samples and assumptions. PriceCharting’s Switch guide says its values are based on sold listings from eBay and other marketplaces and separates loose, complete-in-box and new values. CartridgeBond, whose methodology page was last updated April 28, 2026, describes cross-checking rolling eBay sold listings, PriceCharting complete-condition values and observed local Wisconsin activity.
Those methods illustrate why a guide value is an estimate, not a promise. Your net recovery should be calculated as:
Estimated net recovery = realistic sold price − selling fees − postage − packaging or other transaction costs.
Use several recent sales with the same edition and condition. If completed sales are sparse, say so in your own notes and lower your confidence. A rare spike, an unsold listing or an optimistic seller ask is not a dependable resale forecast.
Convert resale into an effective cost
For personal planning only, you can calculate:
Effective physical cost = delivered purchase cost − estimated net recovery.
This is not a guaranteed price. Demand can fall, a new reprint can appear, the cartridge can be damaged, or marketplace fees can change. Treat the recovery as a range or a potential benefit, not money already saved.

A worked comparison using your own numbers
Suppose a game’s checkout total is D for digital. A used listing has item price P, shipping S and tax T. Your delivered physical total is P + S + T. If you later expect a net resale amount R, the planning figure is P + S + T − R.
For an illustrative calculation, if digital checkout is $39.99 and a condition-matched cartridge costs $32.99 plus $5 shipping, the delivered physical total is $37.99 before any tax difference. If you later receive a realistic $20 net after fees and postage, the planning figure becomes $17.99. That example demonstrates the arithmetic only; it is not a market quote for a particular game, seller or date.
Do the same calculation with the exact prices you see. If the digital sale is $24.99 and the delivered cartridge is $34.99, resale would need to be substantial to close the gap. If digital is $49.99 and a complete used copy is $29.99 delivered, physical may be compelling even before resale—provided the condition is acceptable.
Digital advantages and trade-offs
Convenience and instant access
A download is available as soon as it finishes installing. You can switch between digital titles without carrying cartridges, and every game remains in the console’s software menu. This matters to households that share cartridges, players who travel, and anyone who dislikes keeping small game cards organized.
Sales are temporary and regional
eShop discounts differ by country and can change without matching another region’s promotion. NTPrices documents regional variation and history at its tracker; use it as a reference, then verify the live price in your own storefront. A historical low does not guarantee that the same price will return on a particular schedule.
No ordinary resale path
The downloaded license does not become a used object you can list after finishing the game. If you are comparing a digital sale with a cartridge that you expect to sell, include that difference explicitly rather than calling both prices equivalent.
Used physical advantages and trade-offs
Lending and resale flexibility
A cartridge can be handed to a friend or family member and can be sold when you are finished. That flexibility has real value, especially for games you expect to complete once. It also introduces work: finding a buyer, packing the item, paying fees and waiting for payment.

Condition and completeness are part of the product
Second-hand offers are not standardized. One seller’s “used” may mean a clean cartridge with the original case; another may ship a loose card in generic packaging. Read the grading definition and listing details, and save screenshots of the description if the condition is important.
Prices can move in both directions
Demand, print runs, a sequel, a remake, a digital promotion or a new supply of cartridges can change the market. A game that holds value today may not do so when you sell. Conversely, a temporarily scarce title can become more expensive than its original retail price. Neither outcome is assured by the fact that the game is physical.

Always label the currency and storefront in your notes. The official source cited here is Nintendo of America’s US sales page, so its examples apply to US eShop checking. NTPrices emphasizes that eShop prices vary by region; do not transfer a European, Canadian or other regional tracker value into a US comparison without converting and verifying it.
Tax treatment can differ between digital checkout and a marketplace order. Use the final amount charged in each case. Shipping is especially important for inexpensive cartridges: a low item price can disappear once postage is added, while local pickup may remove shipping but introduce travel time or risk.
Timing matters on both sides. A digital sale can end, and a used listing can sell before you decide. If you are not in a hurry, record the current figures and set a personal threshold—for example, “buy digital below my target price; otherwise wait for a sale or search for a complete cartridge.” That threshold is a budgeting tool, not a prediction of future discounts.

Comparing different editions
A standard digital copy versus a used deluxe cartridge is not a fair price test. Match included content before drawing a conclusion.

Using asking prices as resale evidence
A listing can remain unsold indefinitely. Use completed sales and subtract fees and postage, as the methodologies described by PriceCharting and CartridgeBond demonstrate.
Assuming a tracker’s totals prove savings
Numbers such as games tracked, regions covered or prices logged describe a service’s scale. They do not establish that digital or physical games are cheaper overall.
Forgetting your own use pattern
If you regularly lend games, a cartridge’s option value may justify a slightly higher up-front cost. If you play many titles on one console and never resell, instant digital access may be worth paying for. Put that preference beside the monetary calculation instead of pretending it has no value.

- Write the exact title, edition, region and included content.
- Check the live eShop price in your account’s region, including tax, and note the regular price and sale end information if shown.
- Find at least one used listing for the same edition; add shipping and tax to obtain the delivered total.
- Verify cartridge condition, case, inserts, seller rating, return terms and photographs.
- If resale matters, review comparable completed sales, subtract fees and postage, and record a conservative net range.
Choose digital when its verified total is lower enough to outweigh your interest in lending or resale, or when convenience is your priority. Choose used physical when the delivered total is lower, the condition matches your needs and the potential to lend or resell matters to you.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The cited sources document storefront prices, regional tracking, used-offer variation and resale-estimation methods. They do not provide an original-publisher statistic measuring the total lifetime cost of buying the same Switch game digitally on sale versus used physically. Therefore, no universal savings percentage or permanent winner can be stated responsibly.
The reliable conclusion is a decision rule: compare the exact current numbers for the exact copy you would buy, then add the value you place on convenience, lending, condition and resale. That approach remains valid when a promotion ends, a listing disappears or your region’s price differs from someone else’s.
