In North America, most completed Nintendo eShop game and DLC purchases cannot be refunded or exchanged. The important exception is an eligible digital preorder that you cancel before Nintendo processes payment and begins preloading—Nintendo’s support guidance says this can be as late as seven days before release. Physical purchases follow the seller’s policy: a Nintendo Store physical pre-purchase is charged immediately and requires contacting Nintendo Support, while a game bought from another retailer must be returned through that retailer.

Your country, purchase channel, and the timing of the request determine which rule applies. The guidance below reflects Nintendo of America and Nintendo Support pages for the Americas; customers elsewhere should use their regional Nintendo support site and local consumer law.

Start by identifying the purchase

Do not begin with the reason for the refund. Nintendo’s process first depends on where and how you bought the game. A downloaded game, a digital preorder, a physical pre-purchase from Nintendo Store, and a cartridge bought from a retailer are handled through different policies.

What you bought North American starting rule Who handles the request
Completed digital game or DLC from Nintendo eShop Generally final and non-refundable; mistaken purchases are not refunded or exchanged. Nintendo Support can review the circumstances, but Nintendo does not promise an exception.
Digital Nintendo eShop preorder Can be canceled before payment is processed and the game is preloaded. Nintendo says payment is processed no sooner than seven days before release. Cancel through the Nintendo eShop preorder controls before the cutoff; contact Nintendo Support if the option is unavailable.
Physical game pre-purchased from Nintendo Store Payment is taken immediately, unlike a digital preorder. Contact Nintendo Support to request cancellation.
Physical game bought from another retailer Nintendo does not set that seller’s return window or condition rules. Use the retailer’s return process and check the law where you bought it.

Can you refund a completed digital Switch game or DLC?

Nintendo of America’s digital-products policy states: “Except as authorized by Nintendo or as required by applicable law, all payments that you make through the Nintendo Account services (including pre-purchases and subscription payments) are final and non-refundable.” This is the baseline for payments made through Nintendo Account services in the Americas.

Nintendo Support’s page titled Refund Request for Downloaded Game or DLC is more direct about common mistakes: “We are unable to provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases.” The support page specifically frames concerns such as choosing the wrong game, disliking a game after purchase, and making an accidental purchase. Those situations should therefore be treated as non-refundable unless Nintendo identifies an authorized exception or applicable law requires a remedy.

What “mistaken purchase” means in practice

  • You selected the wrong title or edition.
  • You bought downloadable content for the wrong game or account.
  • You started a download and then decided the game was not for you.
  • A family member or another person using the console made an unintended purchase.

Nintendo’s published guidance does not say that stopping a download, deleting the software, or never launching it creates a refund right. Do not assume that unused play time changes the policy. If your situation involves a legal right, an account problem, or facts that do not fit a normal mistaken purchase, contact Nintendo Support and describe those facts accurately. Support may review the request, but the policy does not guarantee approval.

How to ask Nintendo Support about a digital purchase

  1. Confirm the Nintendo Account that paid for the game or DLC and collect the order details from the purchase receipt or account history.
  2. Write down the title, edition or DLC name, purchase date, and the reason your circumstances may fall outside an ordinary mistaken purchase.
  3. Use the Nintendo Support channel for your country or region and select the digital-purchase or refund-help category that matches your issue.
  4. State whether the software was downloaded, launched, or used, and avoid describing an ordinary change of mind as a technical problem.
  5. Ask whether an exception is available under Nintendo policy or applicable law. Do not describe a support contact as a guaranteed refund request.

Keep the case number and any response. If Nintendo declines and you believe a specific consumer-protection rule applies, ask the relevant consumer authority or payment provider about lawful next steps rather than filing a false unauthorized-transaction claim.

When can a digital preorder be canceled?

Digital preorders are the main timing-based exception in Nintendo’s North American guidance. Nintendo says a customer can cancel an eligible preorder at any time before payment is processed and the game is preloaded, “up to 7 days before the game’s release date.” Nintendo’s FAQ also says payment is processed no sooner than seven days before release.

  • Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
  • Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer

That cutoff is a policy timing threshold, not a promise that every title can be canceled at exactly the same minute. The safe rule is to cancel before the charge and preload transition shown for your preorder. Waiting until release day, or until the game has begun preloading, is too late under this guidance.

How to cancel before the cutoff

  1. Sign in to the Nintendo Account used to place the preorder.
  2. Open the Nintendo eShop on the relevant Switch console or use Nintendo’s account-support tools for your region.
  3. Open the area that lists your preorders and select the game you want to cancel.
  4. Choose the available cancellation command and confirm. Save the confirmation screen or email.
  5. Check your payment method and account history. A canceled preorder should not proceed to the scheduled charge; if a charge or preload has already started, contact Nintendo Support immediately with the order details.

Menu names and availability can vary by region, console software, and the title’s preorder status. If you cannot find a cancellation control, do not wait for release day: contact Nintendo Support while the preorder is still before its payment and preload window.

What happens after payment or preload begins?

Once Nintendo has processed payment or started the preload, the preorder is no longer in the pre-release cancellation stage described by the FAQ. At that point, the ordinary digital-products rule applies: payments are generally final and non-refundable, subject to any Nintendo-authorized exception or applicable law. Contact support if you need a determination, but do not assume that a preorder can be reversed after the cutoff.

What if you pre-purchased a physical game from Nintendo Store?

A physical pre-purchase from Nintendo Store is not the same transaction as an eShop preorder. Nintendo’s support guidance says Nintendo Store charges the buyer immediately and instructs the customer to contact Nintendo Support to cancel. The immediate charge means you should not wait for a seven-day digital-preorder window.

Cancellation steps

  1. Locate the Nintendo Store order confirmation and note the order number, product, purchaser name, and delivery address.
  2. Contact Nintendo Support using the country-specific channel listed for Nintendo Store orders.
  3. Request cancellation as soon as you decide not to proceed and explain that it is a physical Nintendo Store pre-purchase.
  4. Keep the support response and monitor the order status. If the item has already entered fulfillment or shipped, ask what return procedure Nintendo Store provides instead of assuming cancellation is still possible.

Nintendo’s cited policy index separates online Nintendo Store returns from digital products and identifies that store policy as applying in the United States and Canada. The exact return conditions, shipping status, and any deadlines should be confirmed in the current Nintendo Store terms for your order.

Can you return a physical game bought from another retailer?

For a cartridge or boxed game purchased from a third-party retailer, start with the seller that took your payment. Nintendo’s US policy index treats Nintendo Store returns separately from digital products; it does not establish the return window, restocking rules, condition requirements, or exclusions used by unrelated retailers.

Information to check in the retailer’s policy

  • Whether opened software can be returned or only sealed copies.
  • The number of days allowed from delivery or purchase.
  • Whether the receipt, order number, original packaging, or included code is required.
  • Whether a defective product follows a warranty or exchange process rather than a change-of-mind return.
  • Who pays return shipping and when the refund is issued.

If the retailer rejects a return, local consumer law may still provide rights for defective, misdescribed, or undelivered goods. Those rights vary by country, state, province, and transaction type. Nintendo’s North American digital policy cannot be used to determine another seller’s physical-goods obligations.

A decision path for common situations

“I bought the wrong game in the eShop.”

Treat this as a mistaken digital purchase. Nintendo Support says mistaken purchases are not refundable or exchangeable. You may still contact support if there are unusual facts or a possible legal requirement, but do not expect an automatic reversal.

“I preordered digitally and changed my mind.”

Check whether payment and preload have begun. If they have not, cancel before the cutoff; Nintendo’s FAQ places the transition no sooner than seven days before release. If payment or preload has begun, contact support, but the ordinary final-sale rule may apply.

“I ordered a physical game from Nintendo Store.”

Because Nintendo Store charges immediately, contact Nintendo Support to request cancellation. Do not use the eShop preorder timing as a guide for this order.

“I bought a cartridge from a local or online shop.”

Use that retailer’s return or exchange policy. Nintendo cannot determine a separate seller’s deadline or condition rules.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I live outside the United States or Canada.”

Do not treat the North American wording as universal. Open the Nintendo support site for your country, review the regional Nintendo Account and store terms, and check mandatory consumer protections where you live. The available cancellation window, refund rights, and contact process can differ.

How to avoid a purchase you cannot undo

  • Read the game description, edition details, compatibility information, and screenshots before confirming an eShop purchase; Nintendo Support specifically recommends checking these details.
  • Verify the user profile and Nintendo Account that will receive the game or DLC.
  • For a preorder, record the release date and set a reminder before the seven-day payment window begins.
  • Distinguish “Nintendo eShop preorder” from “Nintendo Store physical pre-purchase” before assuming when you will be charged.
  • Keep receipts, order numbers, and cancellation confirmations until the transaction is settled.

What Nintendo’s policy does—and does not—establish

The cited Nintendo of America and Nintendo Support pages establish a North American baseline for Nintendo Account digital payments, a specific cancellation period for eligible digital preorders, and a separate contact process for Nintendo Store physical pre-purchases. They do not publish a universal refund entitlement for every country, guarantee that support will make discretionary exceptions, or set the return terms of independent retailers.

There is also no relevant market or usage statistic in these policy materials that would make a refund more or less likely. Eligibility turns on transaction type, timing, seller, account circumstances, and applicable law—not on a published success rate.
