Nintendo Switch downloads can use either the console’s built-in system memory or a compatible microSD card. With a card inserted, downloadable software normally goes to the card by default. Your game saves are different: Nintendo says save data remains in system memory and cannot be copied to microSD. A card is therefore optional when internal space is sufficient, but useful for a large digital library.

What goes where on a Nintendo Switch?

The Switch treats downloaded game files and saved progress as separate types of data. Understanding that distinction prevents the most common storage mistake: buying a card expecting it to hold your saves.

Data System memory microSD card
Downloaded games and applications Can be stored here Can be stored here
Game updates Can use system memory; some update data has migration limits Can store eligible update data
Downloadable content (DLC) Can be stored here Can be stored here
Game save data Stored here Cannot be saved or copied here
Screenshots and captured videos Can be stored here Can be stored here

Nintendo’s support wording is explicit: “On Nintendo Switch, game save data is stored on the console’s System Memory.” It also says, “Game save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card.” That remains true whether you play from a physical game card, system memory, or microSD.

System memory

System memory is the storage built into the console. It can contain downloaded software as well as the saved progress associated with your games. Because saves stay here, removing or replacing a microSD card does not move your progress with it.

microSD storage

A microSD card is removable expansion storage. It can hold downloadable software, updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured videos. Nintendo states that when a microSD card is inserted, it becomes the default save location for downloadable software. In this context, “save location” means the location for downloaded software files, not the location for game-save progress.

Do you need a microSD card?

No. A Switch can download games to system memory, so a card is not mandatory for every digital purchase. The practical question is whether the free space left on the console is enough for the games, updates, and DLC you plan to keep installed.

When system memory is enough

Staying with system memory is reasonable if you mostly buy physical game cards, keep only a few digital titles installed, or have plenty of free space for the next download. It also avoids buying an accessory before you know that storage is a problem.

When a card is useful

A microSD card becomes useful when large or numerous digital downloads repeatedly consume the built-in space. It lets you keep more software installed without deleting older games. Nintendo describes the appropriate added capacity as depending on the number and type of games and other content you choose; it does not prescribe one universal size for every player.

Check each game’s current eShop listing or the physical package before buying. Storage requirements vary by game and can change when software is updated, so the size of one title is not a reliable guide to the whole library.

Which microSD cards work with the original Switch family?

Nintendo lists microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC cards for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch OLED Model. The capacities identified in Nintendo’s support guidance are:

Card type Supported capacity Requirement
microSD Up to 2 GB Usable without the microSDXC update requirement
microSDHC 4 GB–32 GB Usable on the listed original Switch models
microSDXC 64 GB–2 TB A system update is required before use

Speed guidance

Nintendo recommends a UHS-I-compatible card with a transfer speed of 60–95 MB/s. The company says higher transfer speed provides a better gameplay experience. That is compatibility guidance, not an independent ranking of retail cards, and it does not establish a single “fastest” choice.

Cards are separate purchases

microSD cards are sold separately from the console. Choose capacity from your expected download habits and the requirements shown for the games you intend to install. A larger card is useful only if you will actually use the additional space; a smaller compatible card can be sufficient for a limited digital library.

How to move an existing download to a microSD card

Nintendo’s current US instructions provide a Data Management command for moving eligible software data between system memory and a microSD card. The command does not make every item movable: save data remains in system memory, and some update data has migration restrictions.

  1. Insert a compatible microSD card into the Switch.
  2. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  3. Select Data Management.
  4. Choose Move Data Between System / microSD Card.
  5. Select the direction of the move and then choose the eligible software data to transfer.
  6. Confirm the operation and wait for the console to finish before removing the card or powering off.

The available list reflects what the console can migrate. Do not expect this menu to move game saves. If a particular update or other item is excluded, leave it in its current location rather than treating the exclusion as an error.

If the move option is unavailable or insufficient

Nintendo guidance also describes a delete-or-archive-and-redownload approach for software that cannot be reorganized directly. With the card inserted, archive or delete the downloaded software, then download it again so the software files are placed on the card by default. This approach affects the installed software files, not the saved progress.

  • Add a compatible microSD card: This expands the space available for downloadable software and related files. Once inserted, new downloadable software uses the card by default.
  • Move eligible software: Use the Data Management move command when the item appears as eligible.

Before deleting anything, confirm that you are removing the software installation rather than the save data. The two categories are handled separately by the console.

How to choose between system memory and microSD

Use these decision points rather than assuming every owner needs the same setup.

Compare your available capacity with the game’s requirement

Look at the free space reported in Data Management, then compare it with the size shown on the game’s current eShop listing or packaging. Leave room for updates and DLC; a download that barely fits may not remain practical after later patches.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Consider your library pattern

Players with many digital purchases or several large games installed at once are more likely to benefit from a card. Players who rotate a small number of games, rely mainly on physical cartridges, or regularly archive finished titles may be comfortable with system memory alone.

Separate storage expansion from save protection

A microSD card expands space for software files; it is not a save-data backup device. Since save data remains in system memory, changing cards does not transfer progress. Treat a card purchase as a capacity decision, not a way to relocate or safeguard saves.

Original Switch versus Switch 2 microSD requirements

Do not apply the original Switch card list to Switch 2. Nintendo’s microSD FAQ says Switch 2 accepts only microSD Express cards. The microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC guidance above applies to the original Nintendo Switch family—Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED Model—not to Switch 2.

Check the support information for the exact console model before purchasing a card. A card that matches the original Switch specifications is not automatically the correct expansion card for Switch 2.

Common misconceptions and their corrections

“If the game is on the card, the save must be there too.”

It is not. Downloaded software can be on microSD while its save remains in system memory.

“A microSD card is required for digital games.”

It is optional. Digital software can use system memory when sufficient space is available.

“Moving software moves every related file.”

The Data Management command moves eligible software data only. Saves cannot be moved to microSD, and some update data is excluded.

“Any large microSD card will work.”

Use a card class supported by your console. For the original Switch family, Nintendo lists microSD, microSDHC, and microSDXC, requires a system update for microSDXC, and recommends UHS-I with 60–95 MB/s transfer speed.

A practical setup for most digital players

  1. Check the free space in System Settings > Data Management.
  2. Check the current size of each game, update, and DLC package you expect to install.
  3. If the combined requirement fits comfortably, download to system memory and monitor free space.
  4. If space is tight, select a compatible microSD card based on your expected library rather than a universal capacity rule.
  5. Insert the card before downloading new software so the card becomes the default location.
  6. Use Move Data Between System / microSD Card for eligible existing software, and archive or redownload items that cannot be moved directly.
  7. Keep in mind that saved progress remains in system memory throughout.
