Sometimes, but not automatically. Nintendo Switch demo-save carryover is decided by each game. Some publishers explicitly let you continue a demo save in the purchased game, while others do not promise it. Nintendo Switch Online Game Trials are a separate feature with their own save-continuation rule.
The short answer: demo progress is title-specific
Buying the full Nintendo Switch game does not create a universal right to import every demo save. The game’s publisher must support the handoff, and the title’s official product page or support instructions should say so. The evidence for Switch games confirms specific supported titles, not a console-wide setting that migrates every demo.
Two confirmed examples are Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX and HARVESTELLA. The Pokémon Company says the Rescue Team DX demo lets players carry its save data to the full version. Square Enix answers “Yes, save data from the demo version can be carried over to the full game” in its HARVESTELLA support FAQ.
Those statements establish compatibility for those games. They do not establish that every Switch demo transfers, that every collectible or unlock transfers, or that a demo save can be read by any similarly named edition. Check the exact title and platform edition before you buy on the assumption that progress will continue.

Ordinary game demos: what can carry over?
An ordinary demo is a limited portion or specially configured version of a game. Its save system may be separate from the full release, or it may be designed to hand progress to the retail version. Only the title’s own instructions can settle that question.
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX
The Pokémon Company’s official game page gives an explicit promise: “Aside from being able to play the early part of the story in this demo version, you can also carry that save data over to the full version.” This is a clear example of a demo that is intended to become a starting point for the purchased game.
The wording confirms save-data carryover, but it does not describe every individual item or unlock. Treat the supported result as “continue with the compatible demo save,” rather than assuming that every setting, bonus, or completion flag will be preserved.

HARVESTELLA
Square Enix’s support center gives an equally direct answer for the Switch version of HARVESTELLA: “Yes, save data from the demo version can be carried over to the full game.” If you are moving from this demo to the full release, that publisher statement is the relevant compatibility confirmation.
As with any title, use the instructions for the edition you own. A statement about the Switch demo should not be extended to a different platform, regional release, remake, or separate trial build without confirmation.
Demo versus Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial
Nintendo uses “Game Trial” for something different from an ordinary demo. Nintendo Support defines it as “A Game Trial is a free, downloadable full version of a game made available to Nintendo Switch Online members.” Access lasts for a set period, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required.

Because a Game Trial is the full game made playable temporarily, Nintendo gives a specific save rule. Its FAQ says the trial save is not deleted when the trial ends and can be used to continue if you purchase the game. That is a Nintendo-wide policy for the Game Trial feature, not a blanket promise about ordinary demos downloaded from the eShop.

Game Trial add-ons
If you buy downloadable content while using a Game Trial, Nintendo’s FAQ says that content cannot be played separately from the supporting game. It becomes inaccessible again after the trial ends unless you purchase the game. This is a separate issue from whether the main trial save is retained.

What happens if you archive or delete the demo?
Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ says Switch save data is stored in system memory rather than on the microSD card. It also says archiving or deleting downloaded software does not delete its save data. That means removing the demo application to free storage is not, by itself, the same as erasing the save file.
Save retention and save compatibility are different questions. A retained demo save can still be unusable by a full-game application if the publisher did not implement an import path. Conversely, a title that supports carryover may require the demo save to remain on the same console or may present an import option when the full game starts. Nintendo’s general storage rule cannot answer those title-specific details.

Before deleting software
- Look up the game’s official demo-transfer instructions and note any required in-game step, such as completing a checkpoint or choosing an export command.
- Keep the demo installed until you have launched the full game and confirmed that the expected save is recognized, unless storage constraints make that impossible.
- Do not confuse deleting the application with deleting save data. The latter is a separate action in the Switch data-management menus.
Same-console continuation versus moving to another Switch
Readers often use “transfer” to describe two different operations. Continuing from a demo to a full game on the same console depends on the game’s import design. Moving a save between two consoles is governed by Nintendo’s save-transfer feature and is not automatically enabled by buying the full game.

Nintendo’s “Transfer Your Save Data To a Nearby Console” instructions require the same Nintendo Account to be linked to users on both consoles. The transfer can overwrite save data already present on the destination system, so inspect the destination before confirming the operation and follow Nintendo’s current on-screen steps.

How to verify a specific game before buying
- Identify the exact product. Write down the game title, Switch edition, and whether you used an ordinary demo or a Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial.
- Open the publisher’s official game page or support FAQ. Search within it for “demo save,” “carry over,” “transfer save data,” or “full version.” A direct statement like the ones for Rescue Team DX and HARVESTELLA is the strongest confirmation.
- Check the scope of the promise. Confirm whether it covers the Switch version, your region, and the same release you plan to purchase. Note any mention of a required point in the demo or an import prompt.
- Separate progress from unlocks. If the page says only “save data,” do not assume that every item, bonus, difficulty setting, or achievement transfers. Look for a separate list of carried-over content.
- Confirm the console situation. If you will use another Switch, read Nintendo’s save-transfer instructions in addition to the game’s demo instructions. A same-console import and a cross-console move are different procedures.
- Keep a backup plan for uncertainty. Do not erase the demo save until the full game has launched and recognized it, especially when the publisher’s wording is brief or ambiguous.
What is and is not established about carryover
The confirmed sources support a conditional answer, not a complete compatibility catalog. They establish named examples and Nintendo’s separate Game Trial rule. They do not establish a percentage of Switch demos that transfer, a universal list of compatible titles, or a standard set of content that moves in every game.
They also do not show that an ordinary demo save can be converted by changing a system setting, copying a file to a microSD card, or reinstalling the software. Switch save data is managed by the console, while the decision to recognize a demo save belongs to the game’s software and publisher instructions.
If the full game does not see your demo save
- Verify that you bought the same title and edition covered by the demo instructions.
- Confirm that the demo save is still present in the console’s system memory and that you did not delete its save-data entry.
- Restart the full game after installing any required update, then look for an explicit “import,” “continue from demo,” or similar option.
- Check the publisher’s support page for regional or version-specific limitations.
- If you moved to another console, stop troubleshooting the demo import until the Nintendo account and save-transfer requirements are satisfied.
If the title’s official documentation never promises carryover, the absence of an import option is not evidence of a console failure. It may simply mean that the demo and full release use incompatible save systems.

Use this order when deciding whether to buy immediately or finish checking:
