If a Nintendo Switch eShop purchase is not downloading, first establish whether the order completed. Check the purchasing account’s eShop balance, Nintendo’s service-status page, and the HOME menu. Then close any game that may be pausing the download, refresh download progress, check storage, and load the purchase’s Virtual Game Card with the account that bought it.

A “Purchased” label confirms ownership; it does not prove that the software is installed or loaded on this console. The steps below separate a failed transaction from a delayed download, a full memory card, and a purchase that is hidden or associated with another Nintendo Account.

Identify what is actually wrong

Use the symptom that matches your screen rather than repeating every troubleshooting step at random. These checks cover Nintendo’s documented causes for missing or stalled Switch downloads.

1. Confirm that the purchase completed

Check the purchasing account’s balance

Open Nintendo eShop with the user who made the purchase and check the Nintendo eShop balance. Nintendo’s missing-game guidance says that if the funds are still in the balance, the order did not go through. In that case, there is no completed purchase waiting to download. Resolve any payment or service issue shown by eShop, then place the order again only after confirming the account and item.

SANDISK 256GB microSD Card, Super Mario Super Star Edition | Officially Licensed for Nintendo Switch, UHS-I, Up to 100MB/s Read Speeds
  • Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
  • Incredible speeds in a microSD card officially licensed for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo OLED, and Nintendo Switch Lite systems
  • Spend less time waiting and more time playing with read speeds up to 100MB/s(1) and write speeds up to 90MB/s(1).
  • Instantly add up to 256GB (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Store your downloaded games, screenshots and video captures in 1 place so you can travel light.

If the balance decreased, do not immediately buy the game a second time. Continue with the download and ownership checks below so you do not create a duplicate transaction.

Look at HOME and the download indicator

Return to the HOME menu and look for the game tile or a download icon. If the icon is present, the purchase has progressed to downloading even if the title cannot be started yet. Leave the console connected to the internet and allow the current download to finish before treating the item as missing.

Check Nintendo service availability

Open Nintendo’s network maintenance and service-status page. An outage or scheduled maintenance can delay purchase processing, entitlement checks, or downloads. If Nintendo reports a problem, wait until service is restored and then check the download again. Service-status wording and page layout can change, so use the current status page rather than an old bookmarked troubleshooting screen.

2. Resume a download that is paused or stuck

A download can stop progressing when software is being played. The console may pause the transfer while a game or application is running, so a download that appears frozen is not necessarily a failed order.

Close the software safely

  1. Save your progress in the game or application that is open.
  2. Press the HOME button.
  3. Highlight the running software, press the X button, and choose Close.
  4. Keep the Switch connected to the internet and return to HOME to watch the download indicator.

Do not remove the game card or power off during an active save. Closing the running software releases the download pause without deleting the purchase or save data.

  • Optimized for Gaming Speed: Specially tuned for gaming devices, TeknoStone Gaming Series cards deliver up to 100MB/s read speed with UHS-I interface. A2-rated performance ensures faster app launch, smoother in-game loading, and reduced lag on handheld consoles and mobile platforms.
  • Compatible with Top Devices: Perfectly compatible with Nintendo Switch (Not 2), Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Android phones, tablets, and even retro game emulators. Includes a full-size SD adapter for seamless use with laptops, handheld consoles, and compatible card readers.
  • Smooth 4K/HD Recording & Playback: Supports stable 4K UHD and 1080P Full HD recording and playback, ideal for gameplay footage, game stream content capture, or immersive in-game video rendering.
  • Battle-Tested Durability: Engineered for long sessions and intense environments. Waterproof, shockproof, temperature-resistant, X-ray safe — designed to withstand accidental drops, outdoor use, and frequent device swapping.
  • Actual Capacity: Storage may be smaller than the labeled capacity because manufacturers use the decimal system (1 GB = 1,000,000,000 bytes) , operating systems display storage using the binary system (1 GiB = 1,073,741,824 bytes). This is a normal industry practice and does not affect performance.

Refresh download progress

  1. Open the user page from the HOME menu by selecting your user icon.
  2. Choose User Settings.
  3. Scroll down and select Update Download Progress.
  4. Wait for the console to contact Nintendo and reassess the download.

This refresh is useful when the Switch has internet access but the progress display has not updated. If the transfer still does not move, restart the console and wait for it to reconnect online before checking the title again.

Verify the internet connection

Use the Switch’s internet-connection test in System Settings and confirm that the console is actually online. A weak or interrupted connection can leave a download paused without changing the ownership status. If the test fails, reconnect to the correct Wi-Fi network or resolve the network problem before repeating Update Download Progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Restart, then allow a sleep-mode download

If closing software, testing the connection, and refreshing progress do not help, restart the Switch. A restart can re-establish the online session used by eShop and the download service. After it boots, keep the console online and check HOME again.

Nintendo’s missing-game guidance provides a further wait-based step. Place a regular Switch or Switch OLED in its dock, or connect the AC adapter to a Switch Lite, and put the console into sleep mode for up to two hours. Sleep mode lets the download process begin without an application competing for the connection. This is a later step for a legitimate purchase that still has not appeared, not a substitute for checking whether the order completed.

4. Check available storage before changing accounts or buying again

Match free space to the title’s requirement

Nintendo states: Storage requirements vary by game. Check the game’s eShop listing or physical packaging for its required space, then compare that figure with the free space shown in System Settings. A download may fail before installation when the system memory or microSD card cannot hold the software and its required update data.

SANDISK 64GB microSD Card, Yoshi Edition
  • Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
  • The official licensed microSD card for Nintendo Switch Systems
  • Add games fast with write speeds up to 90MB/s (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB = 1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Start playing fast with read speeds up to 100MB/s (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB = 1,000,000 bytes.)
  • Store an entire game collection, plus screenshots and videos, with up to 64GB of additional memory (1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less)

Software can be stored in system memory or on a compatible microSD card. The Switch chooses the available destination according to its storage settings and free capacity; a full destination can therefore block a download even when another location has room.

Free space without deleting save data

Archive or delete unused software and downloadable content from Data Management. Archiving removes the program data while retaining the software icon and save data, allowing the title to be downloaded again later. Deleting software also removes the program data, so use it only when you are comfortable redownloading it.

Save data remains in system memory. It cannot be saved or copied to a microSD card, so moving or replacing a card is not a way to move save files. Software, updates, DLC, and screenshots can reside in system memory or on the microSD card.

Use a microSD card only for a storage problem

If the storage check confirms that capacity is the blocker, expand the console with a microSD card compatible with your Switch model. Confirm compatibility and the game’s requirement before purchasing one. A card increases room for software data; it does not repair an incomplete transaction, restore ownership to the wrong account, or fix an internet outage.

5. “Purchased” but the game is not installed

When eShop displays Purchased, Nintendo says the Nintendo Account currently browsing already owns the game or DLC. The label is an ownership result, not an installation indicator. The title may be archived, absent from the HOME row, or waiting to be loaded as a Virtual Game Card.

Search HOME and All Software

  1. From HOME, scroll through the software icons.
  2. Open All Software to see titles that are not visible in the first HOME row.
  3. Select the game and choose the option to start or redownload it if it appears there.

If the title is not in All Software, use the Virtual Game Card procedure. Make sure you select the user who made the purchase; another user on the same console may not have the entitlement.

Load the Virtual Game Card

  1. Open Virtual Game Cards from the HOME menu.
  2. Select the purchasing user.
  3. Select the game or DLC you bought.
  4. Choose Load on This System.
  5. Return to HOME and allow the download or installation to begin.

The United States troubleshooting flow now directs users to Virtual Game Cards on HOME. Nintendo’s Japanese account guidance states that, beginning April 30, 2025, redownloads of purchased games and DLC moved from eShop to Virtual Game Cards on HOME. Older instructions that tell you to find a redownload list inside eShop may therefore no longer match the current interface.

6. If the Virtual Game Card is missing

Check the selected user

Virtual Game Cards are tied to the Nintendo Account that owns the content. Sign out of the assumption that the first user shown is the buyer: open Virtual Game Cards again and explicitly select each relevant user until you find the account that completed the purchase.

Check hidden cards and hidden software

Nintendo’s missing-content guidance describes a hidden-card state. Review the hidden Virtual Game Cards list and unhide the item if it appears there. The same guidance also describes a Hidden Software state and a way to restore the Virtual Game Cards option from the eShop details page. Follow the labels shown on your console, because Nintendo can revise menu wording and placement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the card still does not appear

If the title is absent after checking the purchasing account and hidden cards, treat it as an account or entitlement issue rather than a storage issue. Do not purchase the game again while the first charge is unresolved. Use Nintendo’s missing digital content support route and provide the account, transaction state, and what you see on HOME and Virtual Game Cards.

7. A complete troubleshooting order

Use this sequence when you are unsure which branch applies. It starts with the least destructive checks and keeps account and transaction evidence intact.

  1. Open eShop with the account that intended to buy the item.
  2. Check whether the eShop balance changed. An unchanged balance indicates that the order did not go through according to Nintendo’s guidance.
  3. Check Nintendo’s service-status page for outages or maintenance.
  4. Look on HOME and in All Software for a tile, download icon, or installed title.
  5. If a download is present, save and close running software.
  6. Confirm an active internet connection and select User Settings > Update Download Progress.
  7. Restart the Switch if progress remains stalled, then check again after it reconnects.
  8. Check the game’s listed storage requirement and available system-memory or microSD capacity.
  9. Archive or delete unused software/data, or add a compatible microSD card only if capacity is insufficient.
  10. If eShop says Purchased but the title is absent, open HOME > Virtual Game Cards, select the purchasing user, and choose Load on This System.
  11. Check hidden Virtual Game Cards and Hidden Software if the item is not listed.
  12. After the basic checks, dock the console or connect AC power to a Switch Lite and leave it in sleep mode for up to two hours.
  13. Contact Nintendo support if the item remains missing or the transaction status cannot be reconciled.

8. Prepare useful details before contacting Nintendo

Nintendo’s support portal offers chat, text/SMS, a help ticket, and phone contact. Support can investigate more efficiently when you record the facts instead of describing only that “it will not download.”

  • The Nintendo Account and user profile that made the purchase.
  • Whether the eShop balance changed and whether eShop shows Purchased.
  • The game or DLC name and whether a download icon appears.
  • What appears in HOME, All Software, and Virtual Game Cards.
  • Whether the card was found in a hidden list or shown as Hidden Software.
  • The console model (Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED), available storage, and whether a microSD card is installed.
  • The result of the internet-connection test and any displayed error code.
  • Whether you closed the running software, used Update Download Progress, restarted, and tried sleep mode.

Keep this information with the console while you contact support. Do not promise yourself a refund or restoration outcome; Nintendo’s published troubleshooting steps explain how to verify and recover access, not what resolution support must provide for every transaction.

Common mistakes that make the problem harder

  • Buying the item again immediately: an unchanged balance may mean the first order failed, but a reduced balance means you should investigate the existing entitlement first.
  • Leaving a game open: software being played can pause downloads. Save and close it before refreshing progress.
  • Assuming Purchased means installed: ownership and installation are separate. Use All Software and Virtual Game Cards.
  • Deleting save data to make room: save data is stored in system memory and is separate from removable software data.
  • Adding an SD card for a network failure: extra capacity cannot correct an outage, account mismatch, or incomplete order.
  • Following old eShop redownload instructions: since April 30, 2025, Nintendo’s guidance places purchased-game and DLC redownloads in Virtual Game Cards on HOME.
  • Ignoring hidden-card settings: a missing card can be hidden rather than unowned.

When the problem is resolved

The issue is resolved when the purchasing account’s entitlement is visible, the Virtual Game Card is loaded on this system, the download completes, and the title opens from HOME. If the balance, ownership display, storage, and service status do not agree—for example, the account was charged but no Virtual Game Card exists—stop troubleshooting as if it were a simple download pause and give Nintendo support the recorded details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will restarting the Switch cancel my purchase or erase the download?

A normal restart does not cancel an eShop entitlement. Save and close any running software first, then let the console reconnect and check download progress again.

Why does a game show as Purchased but still require a download?

Purchased confirms that the selected Nintendo Account owns the content. It does not mean the software is installed; load its Virtual Game Card from HOME and allow the download to complete.

Can a microSD card fix every eShop download problem?

No. It helps only when the game’s required storage exceeds available system-memory or microSD capacity. It cannot fix an outage, account mismatch, or failed transaction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if the Virtual Game Card is not listed at all?

Select the Nintendo Account that made the purchase, check hidden Virtual Game Cards and Hidden Software, and then use Nintendo’s missing digital content support route if the item remains absent.
