A stuck Nintendo Switch download is usually fixed on the console before you need new hardware: close the game that is running, refresh the download from HOME > User page > User Settings > Update Download Progress, then restart the Switch. For a slow download, run System Settings > Internet > Test Connection, compare the result with your normal internet service, and then isolate Wi‑Fi, router, bandwidth, or service-status problems in that order.
When a download is stuck, restore progress on the console first
A download that shows no movement is not automatically a failed download. Nintendo says some games and software pause downloads while they are being played. That behavior protects the online experience, so check the software state before changing your network.
Close the software that is running
- From the HOME menu, highlight the game or application currently open.
- Press X.
- Choose the option to close the software.
Leave the Switch on the HOME menu for a moment after closing it. A download that was paused by active software can resume without any network change.

- Open your user page from HOME.
- Select User Settings.
- Scroll down and choose Update Download Progress.
This is the specific refresh command Nintendo provides for a download that has not resumed. Use it after closing the running software rather than repeatedly opening the game again.

Restart if the refresh does not work
Restart the console when the progress update produces no movement. Wait for the Switch to reconnect to the internet after the restart before launching any game or application. Starting software immediately can pause the download again and make a network problem look worse than it is.
For a slow download, measure the connection before changing settings
Use System Settings > Internet > Test Connection. Record the download and upload results shown by the Switch. Nintendo does not publish a universal normal download-speed number in the cited support guidance, so there is no single Switch threshold that proves a connection is good or bad.
Compare the console result with the speed you normally receive from your internet service under similar conditions. A result that is close to your usual service points toward the eShop, the particular download, or temporary server demand. A result that is far below your normal service points toward the local network, wireless conditions, or the ISP. The test is also useful after each change because it tells you whether the change affected the console’s connection rather than merely changing the displayed download estimate.

Fix the local network in the least disruptive order
Power-cycle the modem and router
- Unplug the modem and router from power.
- Wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem first and wait for its lights to become steady.
- Reconnect the router and wait for it to finish starting.
- Run the Switch connection test again before judging the download.
This clears an unresponsive networking device without changing the Switch’s saved settings. If the modem and router are combined in one unit, unplug that unit for the same 30-second interval and wait for normal status lights before testing.

Test both Wi‑Fi bands
If the router offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, connect the Switch to the other band and repeat the test. The two bands can behave differently in the same room: one may travel farther while the other may be less affected by nearby interference. The useful result is the measured improvement on the Switch, not the name of the band.
Move the console close to the router
Place the Switch near the router while testing. A short-distance test separates a weak signal from an eShop or ISP issue. If the download improves close to the router, distance, walls, furniture, or radio interference is contributing to the slow result. You can then decide whether to change the console’s location or use a wired comparison instead of assuming the download server is slow.
Stop competing traffic
Pause streaming, cloud backups, large downloads, and other bandwidth-heavy activity on phones, computers, televisions, and consoles connected to the same network. Nintendo identifies multiple devices using excessive bandwidth as a common cause of slow Switch downloads. Test again with those activities stopped so the result reflects the Switch rather than the busiest device on the network.
Consider interference and weak wireless coverage
Nintendo lists wireless interference and a weak wireless signal among the general causes of slow download speeds. A connection can remain technically connected while transferring data slowly or retransmitting packets. Testing near the router, then testing from the normal playing position, shows whether coverage is the limiting factor.

Use a wired test to separate Wi‑Fi from the internet service
Nintendo recommends a high-speed wired connection such as cable, DSL, or fiber service for the most consistent setup. A wired test is especially useful when Wi‑Fi changes have not produced a clear answer.
What you need for a dock without a built-in LAN port
Some Switch docks do not include a built-in LAN port. For those docks, the practical wired accessory is a compatible USB LAN adapter, plus an Ethernet cable connected to the router. Connect the adapter to the dock, connect the cable to the router, and run System Settings > Internet > Test Connection again.
Interpret the wired result
- If wired performance is substantially better than Wi‑Fi, the wireless path is the bottleneck. Keep the wired connection for downloads or improve the router’s placement and wireless coverage.
- If wired and Wi‑Fi results are similarly slow, the problem is more likely the router, modem, ISP, or a Nintendo service condition than radio interference.
- If the wired result is unexpectedly slow, try another Ethernet cable before concluding that the Switch, adapter, or internet service is defective.
A wired comparison is a troubleshooting step, not a promise of a particular speed. The Switch’s own test result remains the number to compare with your normal service.
When the eShop will not load at all
Check Nintendo’s service status first
Open Nintendo’s Network Maintenance Information/Operational Status page and look for maintenance or an incident affecting the eShop. A service condition can prevent the store from loading even when other devices have normal internet access. Checking status before changing console settings avoids treating a temporary outage as a hardware fault.

Try Nintendo’s listed recovery options
For users affected by eShop loading problems, Nintendo lists several additional checks:
- Clear the console cache using the available Clear Cache option.
- Try manual DNS settings. If that does not help, return DNS to Automatic so the temporary test does not become a permanent change without a benefit.
- Turn on airplane mode for 10 seconds, turn it off, and allow the console to reconnect.
- Restart the Switch.
- Connect through another wireless network, such as a different trusted access point, to determine whether the original network is responsible.
- Install the latest available system update.
Use one change at a time and try loading the eShop again after the console has fully reconnected. That makes it possible to identify which condition mattered and to undo a setting that did not help.
Choose the next fix by the problem you can observe

| All devices on the network are slow or unstable | Contact the internet service provider after local checks | ISP service | No |
How to tell a console problem from a network or service problem
The same symptom can have different causes. A stalled percentage with an active game open is primarily a console-state issue. A low connection-test result that improves near the router is a wireless coverage issue. A low result on both Wi‑Fi and wired connections points away from radio interference. A normal test result combined with an eShop outage notice points toward Nintendo’s service rather than your equipment.

Use other devices as a comparison
Check whether phones or computers on the same network are also slow or unstable. If they show the same problem, the Switch is unlikely to be the sole cause. Complete the modem/router power cycle and a second test, then contact the ISP if the wider connection remains poor.
Use the service page as a second comparison
If other devices work normally but the eShop will not load, check Nintendo’s operational status before replacing cables or buying an adapter. A service incident can affect only Nintendo services while ordinary web browsing continues.
Escalate only after the useful tests are complete
Contact the ISP
Contact the internet service provider when other devices also have unstable or slow internet after the modem and router have been power-cycled. Provide the Switch’s connection-test results and explain whether the problem occurs on both Wi‑Fi and a wired test. That information distinguishes a general service problem from a single console connection.
Contact Nintendo Support
Contact Nintendo Support when the eShop status is operational and the Switch remains slow after the connection test, network power cycle, Wi‑Fi band comparison, nearby-router test, and wired comparison. Include when the problem began, whether software was running, the download and upload results, and whether another network changed the behavior.
Do not assume the console is faulty until the network-status check and connection comparisons are complete. Those checks are reversible and can identify a service or ISP problem without altering saved troubleshooting settings.
Quick Recap
Practical habits that prevent repeat interruptions
- Leave the Switch on HOME while a large download is running instead of launching the game that may pause it.
- Keep the console within reliable wireless range or use a wired connection when the dock and network support it.
- Schedule large household downloads and streaming sessions so they do not compete with the Switch.
- Keep the system software current, particularly when the eShop itself is failing to load.
- Save the connection-test result from a normal day. It gives you a personal baseline because Nintendo does not define one universal normal download speed.
