The Nintendo Switch eShop uses the country/region set on the Nintendo Account linked to the Switch user who opens the store. To use another market, change that account’s country/region to the target market, then open eShop with the linked user. Match the game, downloadable content (DLC), and prepaid code to the same sales country: Nintendo warns that cross-region combinations may not work, and digital purchases and added balance are generally non-refundable.
What determines which Nintendo eShop you see?
The storefront is controlled by the Nintendo Account, not by the console’s physical location or the Switch system language. Nintendo requires a Nintendo Account linked to a Switch user for eShop access, and that account’s country/region must be set to the market whose eShop you want to use.

For example, a Switch user linked to an account whose country/region is Hong Kong is directed to the Hong Kong eShop. Changing the console language, using a local Wi-Fi connection, or inserting an imported game card does not by itself change the account’s storefront.

How to change your Nintendo Account country/region
Change the country/region on the Nintendo Account that is linked to the Switch user you intend to use. Account changes affect that account’s eShop access and purchase controls, so check your balance and payment details first.
- Sign in to your Nintendo Account through Nintendo’s account-management page.
- Open the account information or profile area and locate Country/region of residence (the wording may vary slightly by account interface).
- Select the country/region whose eShop you need, review the account notices, and save the change.
- On the Switch, open the user profile that is linked to that Nintendo Account.
- Launch Nintendo eShop with that user. If the previous storefront is still displayed, close eShop, restart the console, and open it again with the same linked user.
- Check Account Information in eShop to confirm the displayed market, balance, payment methods, and Nintendo Switch Online settings before buying anything.
If the country selector is unavailable or the change is rejected, review the account’s outstanding purchase, payment, or subscription information and consult Nintendo Support for the account-specific restriction. Do not create a purchase first and hope the region can be corrected afterward; Nintendo documents limited or unavailable refunds for added balance and digital purchases.

Decide whether you need a permanent switch or a separate account
Switching the country/region changes the storefront for one Nintendo Account. A separate Nintendo Account, linked to a separate Switch user, can keep another market’s catalog and purchase history distinct. Nintendo states that balances from different Nintendo Accounts cannot be combined, so separating accounts also means maintaining separate balances and records.

- Digital Card balances can be shared across Nintendo Switch, Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family of systems, but may only be used on a single Nintendo eShop account.
Use one account when you want one continuous account identity and understand the payment and compatibility consequences. Consider a separate account when you need to retain access to two markets without repeatedly changing one account’s setting. The account used to buy a title remains the account associated with that digital purchase.
Record your current account information
- Write down the current country/region and eShop balance.
- Review purchase history and any pending downloads.
- Check which payment card or PayPal account is stored.
- Note which Switch user is linked to the account.
Nintendo’s account-information area manages balance, payment cards, PayPal, Nintendo Switch Online settings, and other purchase controls. Reviewing those items before a region change helps prevent a payment method or code from being used in the wrong market.
Plan the game and DLC combination
Identify the sales country of the base game before buying an expansion, season pass, or other add-on. The country printed on a game case, the retailer’s listing, or the game’s product information may reveal whether the software is a domestic or imported edition. If you cannot establish the game’s sales market, do not assume that the language, cartridge shape, or console region proves DLC compatibility.

Will DLC work with a game from another region?
There is no universal cross-region guarantee. Nintendo’s compatibility notice says software and additional content sold in different countries may not work together. Its example is an overseas version of Splatoon 2 paired with additional content purchased from the Japanese Nintendo eShop; Nintendo warns that this combination may fail.

The supported approach is to buy the base game and its DLC from the same sales country. Nintendo’s Hong Kong support guidance identifies Hong Kong-market software with Hong Kong eShop add-on content as the tested combination. Cross-region pairings are described as unconfirmed and unsupported.
| Base game sales market | DLC eShop market | Support expectation |
|---|---|---|
| Same country/region | Same country/region | Recommended and the combination Nintendo’s guidance is designed to support. |
| One country/region | Different country/region | May not work; Nintendo describes cross-country software and add-on combinations as unsupported or unconfirmed. |
| Market cannot be established | Any market | Compatibility cannot be predicted reliably. Confirm the game’s sales country before buying. |
Why the region match matters
DLC is licensed and packaged for a particular software release. Two releases with the same title can have different product identifiers or content entitlements even when the game language is identical. The eShop checks those relationships; it does not simply match the words in the title.
What to do if DLC does not appear
- Confirm which Nintendo Account purchased the DLC and which user is launching the game.
- Check the base game’s sales market and compare it with the eShop market used for the add-on.
- Restart the console and redownload the content from the purchasing account’s eShop account information.
- If the markets differ, do not buy the add-on again unless you have confirmed that the game release supports it. Nintendo says it does not accept returns or refunds when a purchase cannot be used.
Can you use an eShop card from another country?
Prepaid codes are market-specific. Nintendo says Japanese download and prepaid card numbers require the Nintendo Account country/region to be set to Japan. The practical rule is simple: buy a card issued for the same country/region shown on the Nintendo Account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Account country/region | Card or code to choose | Risk when markets differ |
|---|---|---|
| Japan | Japan-issued Nintendo download or prepaid code | A code issued for another market may not redeem. |
| Hong Kong | Hong Kong-issued code | A different market’s code is not the supported match. |
| Any other market | Code issued for that same market | Redemption can fail if the account and code regions do not match. |
Before purchasing a code, verify the country printed in the seller’s listing and the country/region displayed in Nintendo Account settings. A card described only as a “Nintendo eShop card” is not enough information; the issuing market matters.

When you buy the right code, redeem it while signed in to the intended account and confirm the resulting balance in eShop Account Information. Added balance is tied to that Nintendo Account and cannot be transferred to another account.
What happens to your balance and purchases when you change regions?
Balance belongs to the Nintendo Account
Nintendo states that eShop balance is attached to the Nintendo Account, not shared between separate users on one console. The same account can carry its balance to another console when that account is linked there. Balances held by different Nintendo Accounts cannot be combined.
Nintendo’s published guidance establishes account ownership of the balance but does not promise that changing the country/region will make every balance immediately spendable in every market. Treat a region change as a payment and account-management event: check the balance and the new storefront’s rules before adding funds or attempting a purchase. Do not assume that changing back later will reverse every transaction or restore a failed redemption.

Purchase history cannot be moved between Nintendo Accounts. If you create or use a second account for another country, games and DLC bought there remain associated with that account rather than merging into the original account’s library.
Refunds are limited
Nintendo documents added balance and digital purchases as non-refundable, and it says purchases that cannot be used because of a region mismatch are not eligible for a return or refund. Verify the market, game release, DLC release, and payment method before confirming a transaction.

After changing country/region, open eShop Account Information and review the payment methods available for that market. Nintendo’s account controls include stored payment cards, PayPal, balance, and Nintendo Switch Online settings. A payment method that worked in one country may not be accepted in another, even when the card itself is valid.
Quick Recap
- Use a payment method intended for the selected market when Nintendo requires local billing details.
- Keep the eShop country/region and the prepaid code’s issuing market identical.
- Check the final price and currency before authorizing payment.
- Do not add funds merely to test whether a region change worked; added balance is generally final.
A safe workflow for buying from another Nintendo eShop
- Identify the target market. Decide exactly which country/region’s catalog or code you need.
- Check the linked account. Confirm the Switch user and Nintendo Account that will own the purchase.
- Review current balance and settings. Record the balance, payment methods, subscriptions, and purchase history.
- Change the account country/region. Save the setting in Nintendo Account management.
- Reopen eShop with the linked user. Verify the storefront and currency in Account Information.
- Match the software markets. Buy DLC only when its eShop market matches the base game’s sales country.
- Match prepaid products. Select a Nintendo download or eShop card issued for the account’s country/region.
- Confirm before paying. Check the title, edition, DLC, currency, and account one final time.
- Keep records. Save the receipt and note which account purchased the content.
Common problems and the practical fix
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The expected eShop does not open | The Switch user is linked to an account with a different country/region. | Open the intended user profile and verify the Nintendo Account country/region. |
| A prepaid code is rejected | The code was issued for a different market. | Compare the code’s issuing country with the account country/region; Japanese codes, for example, require Japan. |
| DLC is missing or unusable | The add-on and base game were sold in different countries. | Check both sales markets; cross-region combinations are unsupported or unconfirmed. |
| Balance is not visible on another user | Balance is account-specific. | Launch eShop with the Nintendo Account that holds the balance. |
| Purchases are absent after using another account | Purchase history is not merged between accounts. | Return to the account that originally bought the game or DLC. |
| A failed purchase cannot be reversed | Nintendo treats added balance and digital purchases as non-refundable. | Contact Nintendo Support, but do not assume a refund for a region mismatch. |
Choosing the right regional setup
| Your situation | Most practical setup | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| You buy only from your home market | Keep one account in that country/region. | Some foreign-only catalogs and codes will not be available. |
| You need one imported game and matching DLC | Set the account to the game’s sales market before buying its add-ons, or use a dedicated account for that market. | Payment, balance, and purchase records must stay aligned with that account. |
| You regularly use two markets | Use separate Nintendo Accounts and linked Switch users, keeping each market’s purchases together. | Balances and purchase histories cannot be combined. |
| You already bought cross-region DLC | Check the game and add-on markets before spending again. | Nintendo does not promise compatibility or a refund for an unusable combination. |
Key takeaways
- The Nintendo Account country/region controls the eShop catalog for its linked Switch user.
- Use the same sales country for the base game and DLC; cross-region compatibility is not guaranteed.
- Redeem prepaid cards and download codes issued for the account’s country/region.
- Balance, purchase history, and digital ownership belong to the purchasing Nintendo Account.
- Check every market and payment detail before buying because added balance and digital purchases are generally non-refundable.
