They solve different problems. Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary accessory is a slim carrying case with a screen protector, while an installed grip case remains on the console and adds ergonomic handles. The official case is the better starting point for compact travel and organized storage; a grip case is better for long handheld sessions. A full-size grip will often make Nintendo’s snug case too tight, so compatibility must be checked against the grip’s installed dimensions rather than assumed.
What the two case types actually are
Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary carrying case
Nintendo describes the product as the “Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition.” It is scheduled for release on October 29, 2026, with an announced MSRP of 3,980 yen including tax. Nintendo’s product description calls it a carrying case with decorative patterns and illustrations inspired by The Legend of Zelda and says a screen protector is included.
That makes it a travel enclosure, not an ergonomic shell. The console is stored inside the case with both Joy-Con 2 controllers attached. The case is intended to surround the unmodified Switch 2 closely, protect the screen and exterior during transport, and keep games and small accessories together.
An installed grip case
A grip case is fitted to the console and Joy-Con 2 controllers and normally stays there while you play. The reviewed Genki Attack Vector, used here as an example of this category, has separate console and controller covers, a rubber interior patch for a snug fit, contoured sides for handheld comfort, and cut-outs that retain access to the stand, ports and buttons.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you mean a Zelda-decorated third-party grip rather than the Genki example, the same physical rule applies: the installed shell changes the console’s width, depth and shape. The cited material does not establish that every Zelda-themed grip will fit Nintendo’s carrying case.
Fit and compatibility: will a grip fit inside the official case?
The unmodified Switch 2 baseline
Nintendo lists the Switch 2 at approximately 4.5 inches tall × 10.7 inches wide × 0.55 inches thick with Joy-Con 2 attached. The maximum thickness is about 1.2 inches at the control-stick tips and ZL/ZR protrusions. Those protrusions matter because a case can clear the center of the console yet still press against a stick or shoulder trigger.
Nintendo’s carrying-case instructions specifically show the console being stored with Joy-Con 2 attached. Nintendo Life reports that the official case is smaller than the Genki Sleeper Case and gives the Switch 2 a snug fit because Nintendo is not expecting another case, such as Genki Attack Vector, to be installed.

Why a thin shell may work but a full grip usually will not
A very thin protective shell may add little enough material to remain within the carrying case’s available clearance. A full ergonomic grip is different: its handles or contoured sides add bulk exactly where the official case is narrowest. Even if the console itself still fits lengthwise, the added side width or extra depth around the sticks and ZL/ZR buttons can stop the zipper or lid from closing without pressure.
There is no published universal “grip-compatible” specification for Nintendo’s case, and no cited source confirms a guaranteed fit for any particular grip. Treat compatibility as a measurement question, not as a feature implied by the Zelda branding.
Measurements you can verify before buying
- Install the grip completely. Attach every console and Joy-Con cover, including any removable handles, bumpers or stick extensions that you intend to leave on during travel.
- Measure the finished assembly. Record the maximum overall width, height and depth, including the tallest control-stick and ZL/ZR areas. A ruler works for a first check; calipers are more reliable for small clearances.
- Obtain the case’s internal measurements. Use the grip maker’s stated case compatibility or interior dimensions when available. Do not substitute the external dimensions of Nintendo’s case for its usable interior.
- Check the pressure points. Compare the grip’s handles, shoulder areas and stick height with the case’s narrowest sections. A case that closes only when compressed is not a safe fit.
- Test every closure and pocket. The zipper or clasp should close normally, the screen should not contact the inside surface, and accessories should not push the console against the lid.
- Confirm the maker’s policy. If the grip manufacturer names compatible travel cases, use that list. If it does not, assume fit is unverified until you can measure or test the combination.
For a grip already in your possession, the safest approach is a physical test with the console powered off and no cartridge or loose accessory inside. Never force the zipper around a control stick or shoulder button; pressure can damage the case, the grip or the console.
Protection: travel enclosure versus protection while playing
What the official Zelda case protects
Nintendo’s case encloses the Switch 2 during transport and separates the screen from objects in a bag. Its included screen protector addresses direct screen contact, while the outer case is intended to reduce scratches and the effects of ordinary bumps. Nintendo’s instructions and product materials do not publish a standardized drop-test rating, impact certification or numerical durability score.

Its protection is therefore strongest when the console is packed away. It does not provide the ergonomic hand coverage or permanent corner protection of an installed shell while the console is being used outside the case.
What an installed grip protects
The Genki Attack Vector review describes covers around the console and Joy-Con 2 controllers, a rubber interior patch that helps hold the parts securely, and openings for the stand, ports and buttons. TechRadar characterizes its coverage as sufficient for scratches and everyday handling, but does not provide a standardized drop-test result.
A grip can remain attached while you play, so the console does not need to be removed from protection for every handheld session. Its open areas and control cut-outs are deliberate compromises: they preserve access and ventilation rather than surrounding the entire device like a closed travel case.
Which protects better?
There is no evidence-based numeric winner. The official Zelda case offers a dedicated travel barrier plus a screen protector; the grip shell offers ongoing surface coverage and a more secure hold during handheld use. For a fall outside a bag, neither cited source supplies a drop-test result that would justify ranking one as universally safer.

Portability, storage and day-to-day handling
Nintendo’s case is the slimmer travel option
TechRadar reports reviewed dimensions of 13.4 × 5.6 × 1.7 inches (340 × 142 × 42 mm) for the official case. It stores the Switch 2 with Joy-Con 2 attached, six game cartridges, and small accessories such as Joy-Con straps. Its relatively slim profile is practical inside a backpack, messenger bag or another luggage compartment.
The case’s compact shape is also the reason a bulky grip is difficult to combine with it. Nintendo Life’s description of a snug fit is about the console in its normal configuration, not a console carrying a second ergonomic shell.
A grip improves comfort but increases the handheld footprint
Because a grip remains installed, you avoid removing and reattaching it every time you switch between handheld play and travel. The trade-off is a wider, deeper object in your hands and in your bag. That can make a slim sleeve or console compartment unusable even when the grip itself is excellent for long sessions.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Grip dimensions for the reviewed Attack Vector are not stated in the cited material, so it would be misleading to assign a universal amount of added bulk. The actual increase depends on the design, removable handles, stick covers and whether the Joy-Con covers extend beyond the original controller profile.

A roomier Zelda travel-case alternative
PowerA’s Zelda-themed Hyrule Crest protection case is listed at 11.85 × 6.85 × 2.09 inches (30.1 × 17.4 × 5.3 cm). It is a separate travel-case alternative with more external depth than Nintendo’s slim case, which may make it a better candidate for carrying accessories or a somewhat thicker setup. The cited listing does not promise compatibility with every installed grip, so its larger outside dimensions are not proof of a particular interior fit.
| Case or setup | Known dimensions or storage | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official Nintendo Zelda case | 340 × 142 × 42 mm reported review dimensions; six game cards and small accessories | Smallest documented travel footprint and Zelda styling | Designed around a snug, unmodified-console fit; grip compatibility is unverified |
| Installed grip shell | Exact dimensions not stated in the cited review | Handheld comfort and protection that stays on during play | Added width and depth can prevent use with slim cases |
| PowerA Hyrule Crest case | 30.1 × 17.4 × 5.3 cm listed dimensions | Zelda styling with a deeper standalone travel-case format | Interior compatibility with a specific grip is not promised |
Keeping the Zelda design visible while using a grip
The official Nintendo case’s Zelda artwork is visible on the exterior when the case is closed or carried, but it is not a decorative shell worn by the console during play. If you want the console itself to show Zelda styling, you need a Zelda-themed skin, shell or grip, and that accessory must be evaluated separately for dimensions, button clearance and material fit.
One practical arrangement is to use a Zelda-styled grip for handheld play and a larger, grip-compatible travel case for transport. Another is to remove the grip before placing the console in Nintendo’s official case. The first prioritizes convenience; the second preserves the official case’s intended slim fit but makes switching setups part of your routine.
Buying requirements and common pitfalls
Before ordering, write down the configuration you will actually carry. A console that fits without stick caps, bumpers or handles may not fit after those pieces are installed. Likewise, a case’s outside measurements cannot tell you whether its padded interior clears the ZL/ZR protrusions. Ask the seller or manufacturer for usable interior dimensions, not just marketing dimensions.

- Check what is included. Nintendo’s product bundles a screen protector; a grip review does not establish that a protector is included.
- Check the closure. Never rely on a zipper that must be pulled over a raised stick or shoulder button. Compression can transfer force to controls.
- Check storage trade-offs. The official case has six cartridge slots and room for small accessories. A deeper third-party case may offer more room, but the cited PowerA listing does not guarantee a particular grip fit.
- Check returns before testing. If compatibility is not explicitly listed, buy from a seller with a return policy that permits a careful fit check, and keep packaging until the setup is confirmed.
- Check how often you switch modes. Removing a grip for every trip may be more frustrating than carrying a larger case, even if the larger case is less slim.
These checks also prevent a common mistake: treating Zelda artwork as evidence of shared dimensions. Nintendo’s Zelda case and a Zelda-themed grip can look like a matched set while being made for entirely different physical roles.
Which option fits each priority?
| Your priority | Better starting choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Smallest travel footprint | Official Nintendo Zelda case | Slim documented dimensions, console-and-Joy-Con storage, six-card capacity and included screen protector |
| Handheld comfort | Installed grip case such as Genki Attack Vector | Contoured handles remain on the console during play |
| Zelda branding with a roomier travel shell | PowerA Hyrule Crest case | Zelda styling and a deeper protection-case format; internal fit still needs verification |
| One case for a large grip and accessories | A grip-compatible third-party travel case | The official case is documented as snug around the unmodified console, so a case explicitly designed for the grip is the safer route |
| Screen protection included in the purchase | Official Nintendo Zelda case | Nintendo bundles a screen protector with the carrying case |

Frequent commuters
Choose Nintendo’s case if your priority is a compact package that carries the console, six cartridges and a few small accessories. Add the included screen protector correctly before regular travel. If you also rely on a grip, measure the installed unit first; removing it for every trip may be less convenient than selecting a roomier case designed for grips.

Long handheld sessions at home or on trips
Start with the grip because comfort is the main requirement. Its permanent installation means you can pick up the Switch 2 and play without changing hardware. Select a travel case only after confirming that its interior accommodates the grip, the tallest sticks and the shoulder-button areas.
Collectors and Zelda fans
The official Nintendo case is the directly announced 40th Anniversary product and includes the Zelda-inspired artwork and screen protector. A PowerA Hyrule Crest case offers another Zelda visual treatment and a deeper case format, but it is a separate third-party product rather than evidence that the Nintendo case will accept a large grip.

Nintendo’s announcement places the official Zelda 40th Anniversary carrying case and screen protector release on October 29, 2026, and lists the Japanese MSRP as 3,980 yen including tax. Availability, regional pricing and retailer inventory can differ from that announced figure. The cited materials do not establish a universal drop rating, guaranteed dock compatibility for any grip, or guaranteed fit between every Zelda grip and the official case.
The most defensible purchase decision is therefore based on the role you need: Nintendo’s product is a compact travel case with screen protection, while an installed grip is a comfort-and-handling accessory. Combining them is possible only when the grip’s maker or your own measurements confirm adequate clearance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Switch 2 grip case fit inside the official Nintendo Zelda case?
Do not assume it will. Nintendo’s case is designed for the Switch 2 with Joy-Con 2 attached and has a snug fit around the normal console. A thin shell might fit, but a full ergonomic grip can add width and depth around the handles, sticks and ZL/ZR controls. Check the grip’s listed case compatibility or compare the installed grip’s maximum measurements with the case’s usable interior. The zipper should close without pressure.
Does the Zelda case protect better than a grip shell?
They protect in different situations. Nintendo’s case encloses the console for travel and includes a screen protector. A grip shell stays attached during play and helps prevent everyday scratches while improving handling. Neither the cited Nintendo materials nor the Genki review provides a standardized drop-test score, so there is no supported universal protection winner.
Which Switch 2 case is slimmer and easier to carry?
The official Nintendo case is the slimmer documented travel option, measuring about 340 × 142 × 42 mm in the reviewed dimensions. It stores the console with Joy-Con 2 attached, six game cartridges and small accessories. An installed grip increases the handheld footprint, and a deeper third-party case such as PowerA’s Hyrule Crest model may be roomier but is less compact.

Can I keep the Zelda design visible while using a protective grip?
Yes, but the Zelda artwork on Nintendo’s carrying case is visible on the case, not on the console during play. To show Zelda styling while playing, use a Zelda-themed skin, shell or grip. That accessory must still be checked for dimensions, button clearance and compatibility with whichever travel case you choose.
What does Nintendo’s Zelda case cost?
Nintendo announced an MSRP of 3,980 yen including tax for the carrying case and screen-protector bundle. Regional prices, availability and retailer stock can differ, so the announced Japanese figure is not a guaranteed price in every market.
How many games and accessories fit in the official case?
TechRadar reports space for six game cartridges and small accessories such as Joy-Con straps, in addition to the Switch 2 with Joy-Con 2 attached. Do not assume a bulky grip or large accessory can use the same space without reducing clearance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is there a drop-test rating or guaranteed dock compatibility?
No standardized drop-test rating is published in the cited materials for either the official case or the reviewed grip. The available information also does not establish guaranteed dock compatibility for every grip. Treat those as product-specific questions for the manufacturer rather than assuming them from the case design.
Should I remove my grip before traveling?
Remove it for Nintendo’s case if the installed grip does not pass a clearance test. That preserves the official case’s intended slim fit but adds setup time. If you switch frequently between handheld play and travel, a larger case explicitly described as grip-compatible may be more convenient than removing the grip for every trip.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Choose Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary case for the slimmest documented travel setup, six-card storage and an included screen protector. Choose an installed grip for handheld comfort and protection that stays on while playing. Pair them only after measuring the assembled console or confirming compatibility; Zelda branding alone does not guarantee that the grip will fit the official case.
