Choose the console for your must-play games first. Pick Nintendo Switch 2 when Nintendo exclusives, handheld play, or continued access to compatible Switch games matters most. Pick PlayStation 5 when you want PlayStation exclusives, demanding games with fewer visual or frame-rate compromises, or a large PS4 library. For games available on both, compare the specific version’s performance, price, storage needs, and where you will play it—not the console name alone.
This guide separates those decisions so you can answer “Should I get a Switch 2 or PS5?” without relying on a generic winner.

Start with the games you will actually play
Hardware specifications are a poor first filter. Write down three to five games you expect to buy or replay, then mark each one as Nintendo-only, PlayStation-focused, available on both systems, or already owned on another console. The result usually points to a platform before you compare accessories.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- List your must-play games. Include exclusives, multiplayer games your friends play, and titles you already own.
- Check the current version for each game. A shared title can have different frame rates, resolution, loading times, visual settings, controls, updates, or downloadable content on each console.
- Mark where you will play. If you regularly play away from a television, Switch 2’s hybrid design is a major feature. If nearly every session is on a fixed display, portability may have little value.
- Add ownership and cost. Account for existing physical or digital libraries, the exact console bundle, online-service requirements, storage expansion, and whether you prefer discs or downloads.
Owner discussions often frame the choice as “How do you decide which console to buy a game on?” (an example discussion on Reddit). That is useful language for the real problem, but it is anecdotal rather than a representative survey. A broad 2026 buying guide from Tom’s Guide similarly treats the games you play as the central buying question.

What each console’s library is best at
Switch 2: Nintendo games and a hybrid library
Nintendo lists Switch 2-exclusive games alongside compatible games released for the original Nintendo Switch. That gives Switch 2 two distinct library advantages: access to new Nintendo software designed for the newer system and continuity with selected Switch purchases.
Compatibility is not automatic for every title. Nintendo’s support documentation says, “In addition to Nintendo Switch 2 games, Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch system.” It also warns, “The Nintendo Switch 2 system’s hardware is different from Nintendo Switch, and some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” Use Nintendo’s official compatibility information and lookup for each game and accessory before assuming an old purchase will work.
Some compatible games receive a free update, while others have a paid upgrade. Those updates can affect features or presentation, so check the individual product listing rather than treating “plays on Switch 2” as a promise of an identical experience.
PS5: PlayStation exclusives and extensive PS4 continuity
PlayStation 5 is the stronger fit when your list is built around PlayStation Studios exclusives or current high-demand releases that prioritize visual detail and performance. It also offers unusually broad continuity for an existing PlayStation owner. Sony’s current US PS5 product page says more than 8,500 PS4 games are playable on PS5, and that Game Boost improves frame rates in selected PS4 games. Confirm the individual game’s behavior if a particular enhancement matters to you; “playable” does not mean every PS4 title receives the same upgrade.
For someone with a substantial PS4 collection, that stated catalog can outweigh a small difference in launch price or storage. For someone with no prior library, the deciding question becomes which current exclusives and shared games are on the must-play list.

Portability and performance are separate decisions
Switch 2 is the home-and-portable hybrid in this comparison. You can use it on a television and continue in handheld mode, making it the natural choice for commutes, travel, shared televisions, or short sessions away from a desk. That flexibility is valuable even when a game is also available on PS5.
The trade-off is performance headroom. The Associated Press describes Switch 2 as a hybrid system and says it does not match the performance of PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. That is a platform-level observation, not a result for every game. A specific Switch 2 port may have a perfectly acceptable frame rate and image, while another may reduce resolution, effects, or frame-rate targets to run on the portable hardware.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPS5 is designed for fixed-screen play and has more performance headroom for demanding software. If your priorities are high visual settings, stable performance, fast loading, or a particular feature in a specific game, inspect that game’s documented PS5 version or independent title-level testing. Do not infer the result from console branding alone.
Choose your priority
- Choose portability when you will genuinely play handheld at least often enough to justify it. A feature you use every week is more important than a theoretical performance advantage.
- Choose performance headroom when you play mostly on a large fixed display and are sensitive to frame-rate drops, reduced effects, or visual compromises.
- Choose both criteria by game when your library is mixed. A portable indie game and a technically demanding action game may lead to different platform choices even if both are sold on both systems.
How to compare a game that appears on both consoles
Never assume that the Switch 2 or PS5 version is automatically better. Use this checklist for each shared title:
Rank #2
- The next evolution of the Nintendo Switch system
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Supports up to 4K resolution** when using a compatible game and TV connected via the included Nintendo Switch 2 dock
- Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.***
- Identify the exact edition. Check whether the listing is a native Switch 2 release, a compatible Switch version, a PS5 edition, or a PS4 game running through backward compatibility.
- Check performance targets. Look for the tested or published frame-rate modes, resolution targets, and whether a performance mode lowers visual quality.
- Check features and content. Compare multiplayer support, cross-save, downloadable content, motion or touch controls, local play, and required patches.
- Check loading and installation. Storage media and updates can change how much space the game consumes and how quickly it starts.
- Match the version to your play location. Select Switch 2 when handheld access changes how often you will play; select PS5 when you will use a fixed display and value the stronger version of that particular game.
- Compare the current local price. Include the base game, upgrade fee, bundle, subscription discount, and any required storage purchase.
This process avoids a common mistake: applying one console’s reputation to every port. The evidence available for this comparison does not establish a universal winner for shared games, and title-by-title performance data must be checked separately.
Backward compatibility and the libraries you already own
If you own Switch games
Switch 2 can run compatible physical and digital Switch games, but Nintendo explicitly qualifies that statement. Before buying the new console, search Nintendo’s compatibility information for each cartridge, download, and accessory you care about. Look for notes about unsupported games, partial compatibility, required updates, or a paid upgrade. Keep your Nintendo Account details available so you can redownload eligible digital purchases.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not assume that an accessory-dependent game works simply because its software launches. A title can be listed as compatible while a particular controller, camera, instrument, or other peripheral has separate requirements. Verify both the game and the accessory.
If you own PS4 games
PS5 is a particularly straightforward upgrade path for PS4 owners: Sony states that more than 8,500 PS4 games are playable on PS5. Game Boost can improve frame rates in selected PS4 games. Check the game’s product page for upgrade eligibility, disc requirements, save-transfer instructions, and any publisher-specific conditions before selling your PS4.
Physical ownership still depends on the PS5 configuration you buy. If your collection is on discs, confirm that your chosen console includes a disc drive or supports the drive option you need. If your collection is digital, verify that the purchasing account is the one you will use on PS5.
Library decision rule
- Choose Switch 2 when several of your highest-priority Switch games are confirmed compatible and you value playing them handheld.
- Choose PS5 when your existing PS4 collection is large, especially if you want one system for both PS4 and PS5 software.
- Choose based on the new catalog when you own little software on either platform; backward compatibility then matters less than exclusives and shared-game quality.
Storage, cards, discs, and downloads
The Associated Press reports 256 GB of internal storage for Switch 2 and says expansion requires a microSD Express card. A generic microSD card is not an interchangeable recommendation: check the console’s current compatibility requirements and the card’s stated standard before buying. Storage needs rise quickly if you keep several large digital games installed or capture video.
When comparing a Switch 2 purchase with PS5, count storage as part of the system cost rather than an optional afterthought. Ask:
- Will you buy mostly physical copies, digital downloads, or a mixture?
- How many large games must remain installed at once?
- Does the bundle include a game or storage accessory?
- What is the current local price of a compatible expansion card?
Physical-media policy also needs a date and region attached. Sony’s US PS5 page currently carries a notice saying newly released PlayStation games will be available in digital format only from January 2028. That notice concerns future US releases; it does not erase discs already released, and it should not be generalized to every region without checking the applicable local policy. If buying a console for long-term physical ownership, verify the current regional policy and the exact console’s disc-drive configuration.
Compare the total cost, not an old launch price
Nintendo announced Switch 2 for release on June 5, 2025. Its April 2, 2025 announcement included regional launch MSRPs, including a Japan-only model. Those figures are historical launch context, not a current US or global retail comparison. Prices, bundles, stock, and included games can change, so use the exact local listings available when you buy.

Build a simple first-year total for each option:
| Cost item | What to record | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Console | Current local price, model, and included game | Launch MSRP may no longer match retail pricing; regional models differ |
| Game purchases | Price of your three to five must-play games | Exclusive games can outweigh a cheaper console |
| Online service | Required subscription and its local annual price | Online multiplayer and catalog access may add recurring cost |
| Storage | microSD Express for Switch 2, or any PS5 storage purchase you actually need | Digital libraries make capacity a practical expense |
| Physical format | Disc-drive requirement, cartridges, downloads, and upgrade fees | Existing collections and resale preferences affect the real value |
| Accessories | Controllers, charging equipment, and game-specific peripherals | Compatibility and included equipment vary by title and bundle |
Do not compare a discounted bundle on one platform with a bare console on the other. Normalize both totals to the same number of games, the same multiplayer requirement, and the same storage plan.

Which console fits common player profiles?
| If this sounds like you | Better starting point | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| “I mainly want Nintendo exclusives and occasional handheld play.” | Switch 2 | Whether each older Switch game and accessory you own is compatible |
| “I already own many PS4 games.” | PS5 | Individual game support, save transfer, upgrades, and disc requirements |
| “I play on a TV and care most about demanding games.” | PS5 is the safer performance-oriented starting point | The exact game’s PS5 modes and current price |
| “I travel or share the TV and need handheld play.” | Switch 2 | Battery, carrying needs, and the game’s handheld performance |
| “My friends are split across platforms.” | Whichever platform hosts the games you will play together | Cross-play, voice chat, account linking, and subscription requirements |
| “I want the same shared game on either system.” | No automatic winner | Native version, frame rate, resolution, controls, loading, updates, and price |
A practical buying procedure
- Create the must-play list. Write down at least three games and rank them by importance.
- Verify exclusivity and version. Use the publishers’ current product pages and store listings; distinguish native releases from backward-compatible versions.
- Check owned-library compatibility. Use Nintendo’s compatibility lookup for Switch software and accessories. For PS4 games, check Sony or the publisher for support, patches, and upgrade conditions.
- Decide where you will play. Select handheld flexibility only if it will change your routine. Otherwise prioritize the fixed-screen experience that matches your games.
- Price the complete setup locally. Record the console, bundle, games, online service, storage, accessories, taxes, and delivery.
- Resolve physical-media needs. Confirm cartridge or disc support, the PS5 disc-drive configuration, and the dated local policy for future releases.
- Recheck shortly before purchase. Game catalogs, bundles, retail prices, compatibility notes, and stock change over time.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by specifications alone
Specifications do not tell you whether your favorite game is exclusive, compatible, or comfortable to play handheld. Start with software and use hardware differences to resolve ties.
Assuming all Switch games work on Switch 2
Nintendo’s own wording is “compatible” and warns that some games may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Check every important title and accessory.
Assuming every PS4 game gets a remaster
PS5 supports more than 8,500 PS4 games, and Game Boost applies to selected titles. That is broad compatibility, not a guarantee of a new-gen patch or identical improvements for every game.
Buying the wrong memory card
Switch 2 expansion uses microSD Express according to the Associated Press. Confirm the required standard instead of substituting an ordinary microSD card.

Quoting launch prices as current prices
The June 5, 2025 launch and regional MSRPs are historical facts. Use current local listings and identify the exact bundle and region.
Treating a future digital policy as a present global rule
The January 2028 digital-only notice appears on Sony’s US page and concerns newly released games. Check your region and distinguish future releases from discs already available.
Bottom line: let your top games break the tie
Switch 2 is the better choice when Nintendo’s exclusive catalog, handheld play, or compatible Switch library is the reason you are shopping. PS5 is the better choice when PlayStation exclusives, demanding fixed-screen games, or a large PS4 collection are your priorities. If neither library wins outright, compare each shared game’s actual version and your complete local cost, then choose the platform whose strengths you will use repeatedly.
