Choose the console that matches the games you actually want to play. Nintendo Switch 2 is the only system here with a built-in screen and a TV dock, so it suits players who want one console for handheld and living-room play. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are dedicated home consoles; your decision between them should follow their game libraries, your existing purchases, and the online services you intend to use.
There is no universal winner. List three to five games you most want, decide whether portable play is essential, check compatibility with any library you already own, and then verify the current price, edition, bundle and subscription terms in your country.
The short answer: match the console to your games and play location
Nintendo Switch 2 is the clearest fit if you need handheld gaming as well as television play. Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch built-in display and a dock for TV mode, making it a self-contained portable and home system. Do not treat a subscription catalogue as the same thing as owning a game. Before buying, confirm that each must-play title is available on the specific console edition you plan to purchase, then compare the total cost of hardware, storage, games and online access.

Start with your must-play games
Hardware specifications matter only after the software question is settled. Write down three to five games you would buy or play first, including any titles you already own. Check the publisher’s current platform listing for each one. Digital storefronts, editions, regional availability and exclusivity arrangements can change, so an old list or a differently named edition is not enough.
If most of your list is Nintendo software
Switch 2 is the natural candidate when your priorities are Nintendo’s own releases or compatible games from the original Switch. It also preserves the option to play away from the TV. Confirm the compatibility entry for every older game before assuming that a physical cartridge, download or accessory will transfer perfectly.
If your list is built around PlayStation releases
Choose PS5 when the games you care about are PlayStation releases or when your existing PS4 collection is central to the decision. Sony’s “over 8,500” figure describes PS4 games playable on PS5, not a count of PS5-native titles, and individual games can still have edition-specific requirements.
If access to a changing catalogue matters most
Xbox Series X deserves close attention when you value Xbox releases and a subscription catalogue. Verify the current Game Pass tier, included games, download or streaming conditions, supported devices and regional price before treating the service as part of your budget. The catalogue is an access benefit while you remain eligible; it is not the same as purchasing every game permanently.
Nintendo Switch 2: the portable-and-docked option
One system for handheld and TV play
Nintendo describes Switch 2 as a system intended for at-home gaming that can also be taken on the go. Its 7.9-inch display is built into the console, while the included dock connects it to a television. That changes the buying decision more than a small performance difference: you do not need a second portable system for travel, commutes or another room.

Handheld play also introduces practical questions. Consider screen size, battery expectations, carrying protection, local multiplayer arrangements and whether the people sharing the console will use it mainly docked or undocked. Continuing an original Switch library
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital games from the original Nintendo Switch. “Compatible” is important: Nintendo warns that some games are not supported or are not fully compatible, and the result can differ for accessories. Use the official compatibility table to check each game and peripheral before buying: Nintendo Switch 2 compatibility information.
Do not assume that a cartridge, downloaded game, controller or dock will behave exactly as it did on the original system. Nintendo’s table says the original Switch dock and HDMI cable are not compatible for the corresponding Switch 2 use. Some original Switch controllers can work wirelessly, but accessory support varies. Keep the compatibility result for every item in your setup, not just the game itself.
Storage and expansion
Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage for Switch 2. The console uses microSD Express cards for game-storage expansion; conventional microSD cards are not supported for Switch 2 game storage. If you intend to build a mostly digital library, budget for a compatible microSD Express card and verify its standard and capacity in the product listing. Online features and GameChat terms
Nintendo Switch Online is a relevant cost when you need online features. Nintendo announced a free open-access period for GameChat that ended on March 31, 2026. What the library figure means
Sony says PS5 plays over 8,500 PS4 games. That is a manufacturer-stated compatibility count on Sony’s current US PS5 page, not a performance ranking and not the number of games made specifically for PS5. Check a particular game’s listing for upgrade rules, downloadable content, disc requirements and regional edition differences.

PS5 is therefore most compelling when your existing PS4 purchases have high value or when your priority list contains PlayStation console exclusives. A home-console setup also means planning for the television, available shelf space, controller count and network connection rather than for an integrated screen.
Disc-drive and model checks
PS5 listings can differ by model, storage configuration and whether a disc drive is included. Confirm those details on the exact local listing before comparing a “PS5 price” with another console. A disc-based back catalogue may require a model with the appropriate drive, while an all-digital setup changes how you buy and resell games.
Sony’s US page currently carries a notice that from January 2028 newly released PlayStation games will be available digitally only, while discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. Xbox Series X: evaluate the console together with the service
Game Pass is a factor, not a complete answer
Xbox Series X buyers often evaluate Game Pass alongside the hardware. Compare the currently offered tiers, monthly and annual costs, included games, day-one availability where applicable, cloud or console requirements, and the rules for games leaving the catalogue. The official service page is the right place to check current terms: Xbox Game Pass.
The cited information does not establish a current like-for-like price or catalogue ranking against PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online. Do not label one service the cheapest or largest without checking the same country, date and tier for all three. If you stop subscribing, access to catalogue games can end even though separately purchased games remain yours.
Check your owned Xbox games individually
Backward compatibility and Smart Delivery-style entitlements can depend on the game, edition and account. Before buying Series X for an existing collection, make a title-by-title list and confirm Microsoft’s current support or store information. This avoids assuming that every older disc, digital licence or add-on transfers in the same way.

Home-console requirements
Series X is designed as a television-based console. Plan for the display, network connection, storage expansion and any disc-drive needs shown in the exact regional listing. Those details affect the real cost more than a headline console price.

Price, bundles and the cost beyond the console
Use launch prices only as historical context
Nintendo’s US launch announcement gave a $449.99 suggested retail price for Switch 2 and $499.99 for a Mario Kart World bundle, both for the June 5, 2025 launch. Those figures are not a statement of the US retail price in 2026. Nintendo’s Japan release listed a 49,980-yen Japan-only-language system and a 69,980-yen multi-language system at launch, demonstrating why country and configuration must accompany every price: Nintendo Japan release.
No current PS5 or Xbox Series X price was verified in the cited material. Check your local retailer and the manufacturers’ current listings for stock, discounts, bundles, storage, disc drive and included accessories on the day you buy. A temporary sale or a bundle with a game should not be presented as the standard console price.
Build a total-cost worksheet
- Hardware: console, required dock or stand, and the correct model or edition.
- Display and audio: a TV or monitor, headset and any adapter you genuinely need.
- Storage: microSD Express for Switch 2, or the expansion option specified for the PS5 or Series X model.
- Games: the purchase price of your must-play titles, including whether a physical or digital edition is required.
- Online access: the current regional membership needed for multiplayer or other features.
- Controllers and accessories: extra gamepads, charging equipment and compatibility-specific items.
Storage and accessory pitfalls that can change the decision
Switch 2 storage mistake: buying the wrong card
A conventional microSD card may fit physically but is not supported for Switch 2 game storage. Buy a card explicitly identified as microSD Express and confirm the capacity and compatibility in the listing. Keep the card standard attached to the purchase record so it is not confused with an older Switch accessory.
Switch accessory mistake: assuming the old dock works
Nintendo’s compatibility information says the original Switch dock and HDMI cable are not compatible for Switch 2 use. Check the table for controllers and other peripherals; wireless operation is possible for some original controllers, but not every accessory has the same support.

For PS5 and Series X, record whether the listing includes a disc drive, which storage configuration it uses and which accessories are in the box. Comparing an all-digital model with a disc-equipped model can make one console appear artificially cheaper or more expensive.

A practical decision framework
- Write your priority list. Record three to five must-play games, your existing physical and digital library, and any multiplayer requirements.
- Mark the play location. If handheld play is essential, Switch 2 is the only option in this comparison with a built-in display and docked mode.
- Verify every legacy item. Use Nintendo’s compatibility table for Switch hardware and accessories; check Sony or Microsoft information for each PS4 or Xbox title and edition.
- Choose the service model. Decide whether you prefer buying individual games or maintaining access through Nintendo Switch Online, PlayStation Plus or Game Pass. Compare current regional terms rather than relying on an old price list.
- Calculate the complete setup. Add storage, extra controllers, online access and the games you will actually play.
- Check today’s listing. Confirm local currency, stock, bundle contents, disc drive, warranty and return policy immediately before ordering.
Which console fits common player profiles?
Choose Switch 2 when portability is a requirement
Switch 2 is the best fit when you want the same library available in your hands and on a TV, and when Nintendo’s software is central to your list. Its 256 GB internal storage and microSD Express requirement should be part of the budget for a digital-heavy library.
Choose PS5 when PlayStation and PS4 continuity lead
PS5 fits a player whose priority list is dominated by PlayStation releases or whose PS4 collection is valuable. The broad compatibility claim is useful, but verify individual games, disc needs and editions before assuming a flawless transfer.
Choose Series X when Xbox access and Game Pass align

Pause and verify before buying any of them
Wait if your must-play games are not yet confirmed for the console, if a required accessory has uncertain compatibility, or if the listing does not clearly state the model, storage and disc configuration. A short compatibility check is cheaper than rebuilding a library around the wrong edition.
What Nintendo’s launch message does—and does not—prove
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described Switch 2 as “a leap forward in our journey of putting smiles on the faces of everyone that Nintendo touches.” That is Nintendo’s promotional statement about its launch, not an independent performance measurement. The available evidence does not provide a directly comparable benchmark for all three consoles, so this guide does not rank them by unsupported frame-rate, resolution or performance claims.
