Should you get a Switch 2 or a PS5? Start with the games you will actually play. Choose Nintendo Switch 2 if Nintendo exclusives such as Mario Kart World are essential, or if you want one system that works handheld, on a tabletop, and on a television. Choose PlayStation 5 if your must-play list is built around PlayStation console exclusives, you want broad PS4 compatibility, and you mainly play on a television.
Neither console has universally “better” games. The right purchase depends on specific titles, how you play, what you already own, and the total cost of the edition and accessories you need. The comparison below uses current US information available October 13–17, 2026; prices, bundles, compatibility and game availability can change.

Quick answer: which console fits your priorities?
| If this describes you | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo exclusives are non-negotiable | Nintendo Switch 2 | Nintendo positions Mario Kart World as a Switch 2 exclusive, and Nintendo’s first-party lineup is available in the system’s portable and TV modes. |
| You want to play primarily on a TV and care most about PlayStation games | PlayStation 5 | PS5 is a home-console platform with PlayStation Studios console exclusives and disc-based or digital system editions. |
| You want handheld, tabletop and TV play from one device | Nintendo Switch 2 | The console is designed to switch among all three modes; PS5 is presented as a home console. |
| You already own a large PS4 collection | PlayStation 5 | PlayStation says more than 4,000 PS4 titles are ready to play on PS5, subject to individual-game exceptions. |
| You already own Switch games | Nintendo Switch 2, after checking each title | Compatible physical and digital Switch software can carry forward, but Nintendo warns that some games may not be supported or fully compatible. |
| You need the lowest uncertain upfront cost | Check the exact current bundle and edition | Nintendo publishes a current Switch 2 MSRP, while PlayStation’s US product page directs buyers to retailers for current PS5 prices. |
Use that table only as a starting point. A single must-play game can outweigh every hardware difference.

Make a short, title-specific list before comparing specifications. Write down the games you intend to play in the first year, the games you already own, and any series you would regret missing. Then verify the current platform listing for every important title. Release plans, editions, remasters and regional availability change, so a general statement about a “larger” or “better” catalog is not a reliable buying test.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
When Switch 2 is the game-driven choice
Nintendo presents Mario Kart World as a Switch 2 exclusive. If that game, another Nintendo-published title, or a Nintendo series you cannot play elsewhere is central to your plan, Switch 2 may be the only practical choice in this comparison. Confirm whether the exact version you want is a Switch 2 title, a backward-compatible Switch title, or a separate upgrade before you buy.
When PS5 is the game-driven choice
PS5 provides access to PlayStation Studios console exclusives and the PS4 library. Identify the exact PlayStation games you care about and check whether each is PS5-native, playable through PS4 compatibility, or available on another platform. If most of your time will go to those games, a PS5 avoids buying a second platform for a different exclusive lineup.
A five-minute game-list test
- List up to five must-play games and five “nice to have” games.
- Mark the platform or platforms listed for each title as of the day you are shopping.
- Separate games you already own from games you still need to purchase.
- Give each must-play game a veto: if it is unavailable on one console, remove that console from consideration.
- For games available on both, compare the mode, save, edition and controller features you prefer rather than assuming identical versions.
Where and how do you want to play?
This is the clearest hardware distinction. Switch 2 can be used as a handheld, placed in tabletop mode, or connected to a television. PS5 is presented on PlayStation’s US product page as a home console, so your normal setup is a television or monitor with the console installed nearby.
| Play style | Switch 2 | PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld play | Supported by the built-in screen and battery. | Not a native operating mode; remote-play solutions are separate from the console itself. |
| Tabletop play | Supported; the console can be used away from a television with its own screen. | Not a native operating mode. |
| Television play | Supported through the dock, with output features dependent on the game and display. | Primary home-console use on a TV or monitor. |
| Shared household use | Portable mode can free the television while another person watches it. | Requires the TV or monitor connected to the console unless you use a separate remote-play setup. |
Choose Switch 2 for flexibility
Switch 2 makes sense when you will genuinely use more than one mode: commuting, travel, a second room, or tabletop multiplayer are practical reasons. Do not pay for portability you will leave in the dock. A player who always uses a large television may get more value from choosing the platform with the desired games and storage arrangement instead.
Choose PS5 for a fixed, TV-first setup
PS5 is the simpler fit when the console will stay beside a television, you prefer a conventional home-console controller setup, and portable play is not part of the decision. Its disc-based and digital editions let you choose the software format that matches how you buy games, but check the current edition and retailer price before ordering.
Can I play my Switch games on Switch 2?
Switch 2 accepts Nintendo Switch 2 game cards and Nintendo Switch game cards, and it supports compatible digital Switch software. Compatibility is not universal. Nintendo Support states: “Some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” Check the individual game’s compatibility information before assuming that a cartridge, download, peripheral or game mode will work exactly as it did on the original system.
What to check before moving a Switch library
- Physical games: Confirm that the specific Switch game card is supported; do not infer compatibility from the publisher or series name alone.
- Digital games: Verify that the title is supported on Switch 2 and that you can access the Nintendo account used to purchase it.
- Accessories and special modes: Games that depend on original hardware, unusual controllers or a camera may have limitations even when the main software launches.
- Save data: Plan how your saves will be transferred or synchronized using the game’s supported Nintendo account and system-transfer process; compatibility of the software does not by itself guarantee every accessory or save feature.
The original Nintendo Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2. If you are replacing an older Switch, budget for the Switch 2 dock or the complete system package rather than assuming the old dock can be reused.

Can PS5 play PS4 games?
Yes, PS5 is compatible with PS4 games, with title-specific exceptions. PlayStation’s US PS5 product page says more than 4,000 PS4 titles are ready to play on PS5. That makes PS5 the more straightforward upgrade for someone with a substantial PS4 collection, but verify any game with unusual peripherals, online services or a separate PS5 upgrade before purchasing.
Disc and digital PS4 ownership
- A PS5 edition with a disc drive is relevant if your existing PS4 collection is primarily physical.
- A digital PS5 edition suits a library bought through the PlayStation Store, but physical PS4 discs cannot be used without a disc drive.
- For each game, check whether your edition includes a PS5 upgrade, whether the upgrade costs extra, and whether saved progress transfers.
These details can change by publisher and title. Treat “PS4 compatible” as a starting point, not a guarantee that every feature, add-on or upgrade is identical.
Display, resolution and performance: what the specifications actually say
Switch 2 has a built-in 7.9-inch LCD with a 1920×1080 resolution. When docked, it can output up to 4K to a compatible television, but Nintendo qualifies the feature: 4K output, HDR and variable refresh rate depend on the game and the display, and 4K output is limited to a maximum of 60 frames per second.
| Feature | Switch 2 information established here | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in screen | 7.9-inch LCD | Useful for handheld and tabletop play; it is not a specification for docked-TV image quality. |
| Handheld resolution | 1920×1080 | The panel’s native resolution; individual games can render at different internal resolutions. |
| TV output | Up to 4K, with a 60-fps maximum at 4K | Requires a compatible display and a game that supports the relevant output mode. |
| HDR and VRR | Conditional on supported games and compatible displays | Do not assume every title or television will activate these features. |
The available information does not establish a controlled, quantitative performance comparison between Switch 2 and PS5. Avoid choosing on unsupported claims about which platform always has higher frame rates or better graphics. Compare the specific game’s resolution, performance modes and display support if those details matter to you.
Match the console to your display
- For handheld use, prioritize screen comfort, battery expectations and the games’ portable interfaces.
- For a 4K television, check HDMI features, HDR support and whether the exact Switch 2 game supports the output mode you want.
- For PS5, check the game’s PS5 performance and quality modes and the capabilities of your TV or monitor; the console choice alone does not determine every game’s settings.
Battery, storage and portability constraints
Switch 2 battery life
Nintendo estimates approximately 2–6.5 hours of battery life, depending on the games played. That is a range, not a guaranteed runtime: demanding games, brightness, wireless use and age of the battery can change the result. If you regularly play away from outlets, carry a suitable charger and plan around the lower end for demanding sessions.
Switch 2 storage
Switch 2 includes 256 GB of internal storage. A large downloaded library can consume that space quickly, so decide whether you will buy physical game cards, download most games, or mix both formats.
Expansion requires a microSD Express card. Conventional microSD cards can be used only to copy screenshots and videos; they do not expand Switch 2 game storage. Do not buy a generic microSD card expecting it to install games. A microSD Express card is optional for a small physical library, but sensible for someone planning many downloads. Confirm capacity, compatibility and current pricing before purchase.

PS5 storage and portability
PS5 is not a battery-powered portable system in this comparison. Storage capacity, expansion options and usable space vary by edition and system software, so check the exact current model when you shop. If you keep many large digital games installed, include an approved expansion drive in your long-term budget rather than comparing only the console sticker price.

Use current edition and bundle prices, not historical launch prices. The Nintendo figures below are US MSRPs; retailer prices and availability can differ.
| Item | Current information | What is included or qualified |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 system | $499.99 MSRP, effective September 1, 2026 | System pricing announced by Nintendo of America; verify availability and any retailer discount. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle | $549.99 MSRP | Nintendo’s August 25, 2026 announcement says it includes the system, a full game download and a three-month Nintendo Switch Online individual membership. Confirm the bundle remains available. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 + Nintendo Switch Sports Resort bundle | $529.99 MSRP | Announced for availability October 22, 2026. On October 17, 2026 it should be treated as future-dated, not as an already available bundle. |

Budget beyond the console
- Games: Nintendo says new Nintendo-published Switch 2 exclusive digital titles have an MSRP different from physical versions beginning with May 2026 preorders, and retail partners set their own prices. Compare the exact title and format at the time of purchase.
- Online membership: The listed Mario Kart World bundle includes three months of an individual Nintendo Switch Online membership; other bundles or standalone systems may not.
- Storage: Add a microSD Express card only if your Switch 2 download habits justify it.
- Controllers: A second controller may be useful for local multiplayer. A DualSense controller is an optional PS5 accessory, not a requirement for the core console decision.
- Display and cables: Reuse your existing television only if its inputs and features meet the game and console requirements you care about.
A practical decision process
- Write the must-play list. Include specific games, not broad genres or franchises.
- Apply the exclusivity veto. Remove a console if it cannot run a game you consider essential.
- Choose your normal location. Select Switch 2 if handheld or tabletop use is a real requirement; select PS5 if you are committed to a TV-first setup.
- Audit your existing library. Check every important Switch title for Switch 2 compatibility, or every important PS4 title for PS5 compatibility and upgrade conditions.
- Select the software edition. Decide whether physical cards/discs, digital purchases, or a mixture fits your buying habits.
- Calculate the first-year total. Add the console, one or two must-play games, online membership if needed, storage expansion if needed, and any extra controller.
- Check the purchase date. Reconfirm current MSRP, bundle stock, game platform listings and retailer return terms immediately before ordering.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying from a generic “better graphics” claim
There is no sourced head-to-head benchmark here. Game-specific resolution and performance modes vary, so choose based on the titles and display features you will use rather than a blanket superiority claim.
Assuming every old game transfers perfectly
Switch 2 compatibility has explicit exceptions, and PS5 compatibility does not promise identical peripherals, online support or upgrade pricing for every PS4 game. Check the individual title before you sell the old console or discard accessories.
Reusing the wrong Switch accessories
The original Switch dock does not work with Switch 2. Conventional microSD cards also do not expand Switch 2 game storage. Confirm both requirements when planning a replacement or second-room setup.

Comparing an MSRP with an unknown street price
Nintendo’s $499.99 system MSRP is a verified US figure effective September 1, 2026. PlayStation’s US page does not establish a current PS5 price, so compare the exact disc or digital edition at retailers on the day you buy.
Paying for portability you will not use
If the system will remain docked or connected to a television, Switch 2’s handheld capability may not justify choosing it over the PS5 games and PS4 compatibility you value. Conversely, if you regularly need a second screen or travel system, a TV-only console may create a limitation you cannot fix with an accessory.
Which console should you buy?
Buy Nintendo Switch 2 when
- Your must-play list includes Nintendo exclusives unavailable on PS5.
- You will use handheld, tabletop or TV modes, not merely leave the system docked.
- You want compatible Switch games to continue on newer hardware and have checked exceptions.
- You accept the 2–6.5-hour estimated battery range and the need for microSD Express for game-storage expansion.
Buy PlayStation 5 when
- Your priority list is dominated by PlayStation games.
- You mainly play on a television or monitor.
- You own many PS4 games and have confirmed the titles and editions you care about are supported.
- You prefer to choose between a disc-based and digital home-console edition after checking current retailer pricing.
If both platforms pass the game test, let play location decide: Switch 2 for a flexible portable-and-TV system, PS5 for a dedicated home-console setup. If only one platform runs a game you cannot miss, that title has already made the decision.
