For Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom players, Nintendo Switch 2 changes the experience through dedicated Switch 2 Editions rather than entirely new games. Nintendo describes higher-definition or enhanced visuals, smoother performance, faster loading, HDR support for Breath of the Wild, enhanced resolution and textures for Tears of the Kingdom, a second save file, and the ZELDA NOTES companion feature. The upgraded editions require a Nintendo Switch 2 and the matching original game.

On Nintendo’s US store listing accessed in 2026, the Tears of the Kingdom upgrade pack costs $9.99 USD. Active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access the Zelda upgrade packs at no additional charge under Nintendo’s stated terms. Nintendo has not published numerical resolution, frame-rate, or loading-time targets on the cited product pages, so the comparison below uses Nintendo’s qualitative descriptions rather than invented benchmarks.

The short version: what is actually different?

The original Nintendo Switch versions remain the base games. A Switch 2 owner who already owns Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom can use the corresponding Switch 2 Edition upgrade path. The Switch 2 Editions are not replacements that eliminate the need to own the game, and Nintendo identifies them as playable only on Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo has not supplied a numeric frame rate, output resolution, or measured loading-time reduction in the cited material. Treat “smoother,” “enhanced,” and “faster” as Nintendo’s product descriptions, not as independently tested figures.

What changes in Breath of the Wild?

Higher-definition, smoother presentation

Nintendo describes the Breath of the Wild Switch 2 Edition as offering higher definition and smoother visuals. The description is deliberately qualitative. There is no official number in the cited page that lets you state a specific pixel count or frame-rate target, and there is no independent benchmark supplied here. The practical implication is that the same Hyrule adventure is presented with a cleaner, more fluid-looking image on the newer console, subject to the display and settings you use.

HDR support

The Switch 2 Edition listing also identifies HDR support for Breath of the Wild. You need an HDR-capable television or monitor for that capability to affect the picture; an SDR display cannot show HDR output. HDR support is an output feature, not a promise that every scene will look identical on every television.

Faster loading and a second save

Faster loading is part of Nintendo’s feature description. The same page says the edition provides two save files, allowing you to continue existing data or begin another adventure. The additional slot is useful for a second playthrough, experimentation, or a separate household player, but it has an important one-way compatibility limitation: the second save created in the Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred back to the original Nintendo Switch version.

What changes in Tears of the Kingdom?

Smoother frame rates, enhanced resolution and textures

Nintendo’s product wording for the Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition is: “Travel across Hyrule with smoother framerates, faster load times, and enhanced resolution and textures.” That sentence is Nintendo’s description, not a third-party measurement. It supports a clear qualitative comparison: Switch 2 Edition owners should expect a smoother-looking presentation, more detailed image treatment, and shorter-feeling waits than the original-version experience, but the cited page does not establish a fixed frame rate, resolution number, or percentage improvement.

The same adventure, with Switch 2 additions

The upgrade does not turn Tears of the Kingdom into a different story or replace the original game. It is an enhanced edition of the game you already own or purchase. Nintendo lists faster loading, visual enhancements, a second save file, and ZELDA NOTES as the meaningful additions relevant to this comparison.

Two saves, with the same transfer warning

The Switch 2 Edition supplies two save files. You can retain existing progress and use the extra slot for a new run, but a new save made in the Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred to the original Switch version. Plan accordingly if you expect to alternate between consoles or return to the older edition after starting a new playthrough.

Do you need to buy Zelda again?

Separate three items: the console, the base game, and the upgrade pack. Nintendo’s store pages identify each Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack as requiring its matching Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom game. The upgrade pack is therefore an enhancement for owners of the game, not a standalone copy that grants the base adventure.

If you already own the game

Keep your original game license or cartridge and obtain the matching Switch 2 Edition upgrade access. Nintendo’s official pages describe the editions as Switch 2-only, so the enhanced features are tied to using Nintendo Switch 2. The exact entitlement and download process can depend on whether your copy is digital or physical and on your account and region; Nintendo’s cited material does not establish every ownership-transfer scenario.

If you do not own the game

You must acquire the base game first. Buying an upgrade pack alone does not satisfy Nintendo’s stated requirement to own the corresponding game. This distinction matters when comparing the apparent price of an upgrade with the cost of entering the game for the first time.

If you have Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack

Nintendo’s US store pages say active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members can access both Zelda upgrade packs at no additional charge, subject to Nintendo’s terms. That is a membership benefit, not permanent ownership of an independently purchased upgrade. Nintendo’s UK support FAQ states that an upgrade obtained through the membership can be used only while the membership remains active, requires an internet connection to launch, and can then be used for up to seven days without an internet connection. Those conditions come from UK support and should not be assumed to apply identically in every country.

How much does the upgrade cost?

Nintendo’s current US listing accessed in 2026 shows the Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack at $9.99 USD. The figure is region-specific, can change, and is for the upgrade pack rather than the full game. Nintendo’s cited material does not establish a universal price for every region or a permanent price guarantee.

You own Breath of the Wild and have no Expansion Pack membership The base game plus the applicable Breath of the Wild upgrade terms; the cited material does not state a universal price for every region

You are buying Zelda for the first time You still need the matching base game; an upgrade pack is not a substitute

Check the eShop for your country before purchasing. Currency, taxes, eligibility, and membership rules can differ from the US and UK examples above.

What is ZELDA NOTES?

ZELDA NOTES is a companion-app feature exclusive to the Zelda Switch 2 Editions. Nintendo describes voiced navigation and character insights delivered through the Nintendo Switch app for smart devices. It is designed to supplement play rather than replace the game’s on-console systems.

What you need

  • A compatible smart device running the Nintendo Switch app.
  • Persistent internet access for the service’s app-assisted functions.
  • The relevant Zelda Switch 2 Edition on Nintendo Switch 2.

Because the feature depends on a separate device and an internet connection, it is not a console-only enhancement. If you play without a phone or tablet nearby, ZELDA NOTES does not provide the same value as the visual, loading, and save improvements that are built into the edition.

What it does not mean

ZELDA NOTES is not evidence of a new campaign, a required accessory, or a replacement for the base game. Nintendo’s cited description focuses on navigation and character information. The Four Sages amiibo mentioned on Nintendo’s Tears of the Kingdom page are not identified as required for the Switch 2 Edition, so they should not be treated as part of the minimum setup.

Can you use old Switch Zelda games on Switch 2?

The safest way to understand Nintendo’s materials is to distinguish the original game from its Switch 2 Edition. Your original Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom ownership is the prerequisite Nintendo names for the corresponding upgrade. The enhanced edition itself is identified as playable only on Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo’s compatibility support indicates that the Nintendo Switch app can be used alongside either console and specifically identifies ZELDA NOTES for these Zelda Switch 2 Editions as a Switch 2-exclusive app feature. However, the cited material does not establish a blanket rule for how every Nintendo Switch title behaves on Nintendo Switch 2, nor does it spell out every possible cartridge, digital-license, family-group, or account-transfer case. Use Nintendo’s compatibility and account guidance for your exact ownership setup rather than assuming all Switch software follows one identical rule.

How to move from an original Switch playthrough to Switch 2

  1. Confirm the hardware. The enhanced editions require Nintendo Switch 2. If you only have the original console, you will continue using the original-version experience.
  2. Confirm the matching base game. Verify that your Nintendo account or cartridge is for Breath of the Wild when obtaining its upgrade, or for Tears of the Kingdom when obtaining that upgrade.
  3. Check your region’s eShop listing. Review the current price, taxes, and eligibility in your local storefront. The $9.99 figure cited here is a US listing accessed in 2026, not a worldwide price.
  4. Check Expansion Pack status. If you have an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, review whether Nintendo offers the upgrade through that membership in your region and what happens when the membership expires.
  5. Update and launch the correct edition. Follow the on-screen download or upgrade instructions, then start the Switch 2 Edition on Nintendo Switch 2.
  6. Choose your save deliberately. Retain your existing progress in one slot and use the second slot only if you accept that a new save created in the Switch 2 Edition cannot be transferred back to the original Switch version.
  7. Set up ZELDA NOTES only if useful. Install or open the Nintendo Switch app on a compatible smart device, allow the required internet access, and use the feature alongside the game.

Which improvements matter most in real play?

For frequent explorers

Faster loading is likely to be the most repeatedly noticeable change because it affects travel between gameplay states rather than a single visual setting. Nintendo does not provide a measured time reduction, so judge the benefit as a convenience improvement rather than a guaranteed number of seconds saved.

For television players

The visual upgrades are most relevant if you play on a large, good-quality display. Breath of the Wild adds HDR support in its Switch 2 Edition, while Tears of the Kingdom is described with enhanced resolution and textures. Your television must support HDR to show the former, and display size, viewing distance, and calibration influence how obvious any improvement appears.

For a second playthrough

The additional save slot removes the need to overwrite an existing adventure when starting again. It is especially useful for challenge runs or a second player. The non-transferable nature of a new Switch 2 Edition save means the slot is best treated as a Switch 2-only workspace.

For players who want guidance

ZELDA NOTES adds voiced navigation and character insights through a smart device. It is most relevant to players who welcome optional contextual help and are comfortable keeping a connected phone or tablet nearby. It is less compelling if you want a completely self-contained console experience.

Who should upgrade?

  • Existing Zelda owners buying Nintendo Switch 2: The upgrade is the clearest way to obtain Nintendo’s listed visual, loading, save, and app enhancements without treating the base game as a new purchase.
  • Players beginning a first Zelda playthrough: Budget for both the base game and the Switch 2 Edition route, unless your active Expansion Pack membership and local terms cover the upgrade.
  • Players staying on the original Switch: The Switch 2 Edition features are not available because Nintendo identifies the editions as Switch 2-only.
  • Players who frequently switch between consoles: Keep the save-transfer warning in mind. A second save created in the Switch 2 Edition cannot move back to the original Switch version.
  • Offline-only players: The game itself and the built-in visual improvements are separate from ZELDA NOTES, but membership-based access may require an internet connection at launch and has region-specific offline limits.

Important limits on the comparison

There is no cited official number for resolution, frame rate, or loading-time improvement, and no independent test result supplied here. Do not rely on online claims that assign a precise performance target unless they identify a separate, verifiable measurement. Nintendo’s wording supports the direction of change, not a universal benchmark for every display, scene, or play mode.

The commercial details are also time- and region-sensitive. The $9.99 amount is tied to Nintendo’s US listing accessed in 2026. The membership conditions quoted above come from Nintendo’s US store pages and UK support FAQ, respectively. A local eShop or support page is the authority for your currency, taxes, entitlement, renewal, and offline-use rules.

Bottom line for Zelda players

Nintendo Switch 2 does not require you to abandon the original Zelda games or automatically buy them again, but the enhanced experience is organized as a Switch 2 Edition upgrade attached to each matching base game. For Breath of the Wild, Nintendo lists higher definition, smoother visuals, faster loading, HDR, ZELDA NOTES, and a second save. For Tears of the Kingdom, it lists smoother frame rates, faster loading, enhanced resolution and textures, ZELDA NOTES, and a second save. The extra save is useful but cannot be transferred back to the original Switch version, and ZELDA NOTES requires a compatible smart device and internet access.
