To display Nintendo Switch 2 on a television, place the console in its dock, power the dock with the supplied NGN-01 adapter (or a replacement rated at least 54 W), and connect the dock directly to the TV with an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Then select the TV’s HDMI input for that cable. The console itself does not connect directly to a television with a normal HDMI cable.
What you need before connecting
Switch 2 TV mode depends on three separate connections: power into the dock, video from the dock to the TV, and a correctly seated console. A missing or unsuitable part can leave the dock charging while the TV remains blank.
| Item | Requirement for Switch 2 TV mode | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Dock | Nintendo Switch 2 dock | The console’s TV output passes through the dock; a direct console-to-TV HDMI connection is not an alternative. |
| Power adapter | NGN-01 USB-C adapter supplied with Switch 2 | An alternative adapter is suitable only when its power output is at least 54 W, according to Nintendo’s 2026 guidance. |
| HDMI cable | Ultra High Speed HDMI cable | The HDMI cable included with the original Nintendo Switch is not Ultra High Speed and cannot be used for Switch 2 TV mode. |
| Television | Any TV HDMI input that is selected after connection | Use a direct dock-to-TV connection while setting up or troubleshooting. |
Have the TV remote available so you can change inputs, and make sure the wall outlet and the TV are switched on. If your setup normally uses a soundbar, home-theater receiver, HDMI splitter, or video adapter, leave that equipment out until the basic dock-to-TV connection works.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsConnect Nintendo Switch 2 to the TV: the exact sequence
- Open the dock’s back cover. This exposes the AC adapter and HDMI ports. Do not force the cover beyond its normal hinge movement.
- Connect dock power. Plug the Nintendo Switch 2 NGN-01 USB-C power adapter into the dock’s AC adapter port. Plug the adapter into a wall outlet, rather than relying on a low-power USB port on a TV, hub, or extension device.
- Connect HDMI. Insert an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable into the dock’s HDMI port. Connect the other end directly to an HDMI input on the television. Note the input number or label, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.
- Close the dock cover. Route the cables so the cover can close without sharply bending or crushing either connector.
- Insert the console correctly. Place Switch 2 into the dock with its screen facing the same direction as the dock’s front panel. When the connection is working, the console’s own screen should turn off as it switches to TV output.
- Select the matching TV input. Turn on the television and use its Input, Source, or similar control to choose the HDMI port used in step 3. Selecting a different HDMI port will produce a no-signal message even when the dock is powered.
The console screen turning off after insertion is a useful sign that it is seated and the dock is detecting it. It does not, by itself, prove that the TV is on the correct input; the TV must still be set to the dock’s HDMI port.

Power-adapter compatibility and the 54 W rule
Use the NGN-01 adapter supplied with Switch 2 whenever possible. Nintendo specifically warns that the original Nintendo Switch AC adapter cannot power the Switch 2 dock sufficiently for TV mode because its power output differs. Nintendo’s official guidance states: “Due to differing power output, the Nintendo Switch AC adapter can not be used with the Nintendo Switch 2 dock to support TV mode.”
The original HAC-002 adapter may power the Switch 2 console directly in some circumstances, but that is different from powering the dock’s TV output. Plugging HAC-002 into the dock can therefore leave you with a dock that appears to charge or power the console without producing a picture on the television.

Using a replacement or third-party USB-C adapter
Nintendo’s 2026 guidance allows an alternative adapter only when its rated power output is at least 54 W. Check the output specification printed on the adapter or its documentation; do not infer wattage from the connector shape alone. Also check that the adapter is intended for the electrical voltage and plug configuration in your region.

- For a replacement, verify a rating of 54 W or higher and USB-C output appropriate for the dock.
- Do not treat a phone charger, laptop charger, TV USB port, or low-wattage hub as automatically compatible.
- Inspect the cable and plug for cuts, bent contacts, looseness, heat damage, or intermittent charging before use.
A higher wattage number alone does not establish regional electrical compatibility or official Nintendo approval. Keep those as separate checks when choosing a replacement.

Why the HDMI cable matters
Switch 2 TV mode requires an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Nintendo says the HDMI cable bundled with the original Nintendo Switch is not Ultra High Speed and cannot be used to play Nintendo Switch 2 in TV mode. That older cable may fit the dock and the TV physically, yet still fail the mode’s requirements.
When selecting a replacement, check these details:
- Certification: the package or product documentation should identify it as Ultra High Speed HDMI, not merely “high speed” or “HDMI-compatible.”
- Connector type: use standard HDMI connectors that fit both the dock and the TV.
- Length: choose enough length to reach without tension, but avoid unnecessary cable runs while diagnosing a signal problem.
- Condition: replace cables with damaged plugs, crushed sections, or a history of intermittent signal.
Connect the cable directly from dock to TV during setup. Once a direct connection works, you can test a receiver or soundbar separately, but adding several devices makes it harder to identify whether the dock, cable, input, or intermediary is responsible.

- This is a replacement for the AC Adapter included with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
- It can be connected to either the Nintendo Switch 2 system or Nintendo Switch 2 dock.
- The AC adapter and cable can be separated for easier storage.
Choosing the correct HDMI input
Televisions commonly label their sockets HDMI 1, HDMI 2, HDMI 3, or with a room-specific name. The label you select in the TV menu must match the physical socket used by the dock. If you move the cable to another socket, select that new socket as well.
- Look at the label beside the TV socket where the dock cable is plugged in.
- Turn on the TV and press its Input, Source, or equivalent button.
- Choose the matching HDMI number.
- Wait briefly for the console image; avoid switching inputs repeatedly before checking the cable and dock connections.
If the TV shows “No signal,” that message usually means the selected input is not receiving a usable signal. It does not identify whether the cause is the input selection, cable, power, dock, or console, so use the isolation steps below.

What to do when the TV is blank
Follow Nintendo’s troubleshooting order so that each test removes one possible cause. Keep the setup as simple as possible and change only one item at a time.
- Make the connection direct. Disconnect the soundbar, home-theater system, HDMI splitter, capture device, and video adapters. Leave only the dock, the TV, the Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, and the Switch 2 console.
- Confirm power at both ends. Ensure the NGN-01 adapter is fully inserted into the dock and the wall outlet. If using an alternative, verify the documented rating is at least 54 W. Try a known-good wall outlet if the original outlet is suspect.
- Check the TV input. Select the exact HDMI socket used by the dock. Do not rely on the TV’s automatic input switching.
- Reseat the HDMI cable. Remove and firmly reconnect both ends. Look for a loose fit or visible damage. Keep the cable directly connected to the TV.
- Try another TV HDMI port. Move the cable to a different input and select that input in the TV menu. This tests whether the original TV socket is the problem.
- Try another Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. The old Nintendo Switch cable is not a valid substitute for this test. Use a cable identified as Ultra High Speed.
- Reseat the console. Remove Switch 2 and insert it again with the screen facing the same direction as the dock’s front panel. A correctly docked console should turn its screen off when TV output engages.
- Test another display or dock, if available. Connecting the same console and cable to another TV can separate a display/input fault from a dock fault. Conversely, trying another compatible dock can identify the original dock.
Interpreting the results
- Picture appears after changing the TV input: the original problem was input selection, not necessarily the dock or cable.
- Picture appears with another HDMI cable: replace the first cable with a compliant Ultra High Speed model.
- Picture appears on another TV: inspect the first TV’s input, settings, or socket and consult that TV’s support documentation.
- Another dock works with the same console, power adapter, cable, and TV: Nintendo indicates that the original dock may need service.
- No picture on multiple TVs with a known-good compliant cable and correct power: the dock or console may require Nintendo support; avoid buying a replacement dock until those basic tests are complete.
When a replacement makes sense
Replace the least certain component first rather than purchasing a dock immediately. The following comparison keeps the relevant checks separate.
| Replacement | Minimum checks | When it is justified |
|---|---|---|
| Ultra High Speed HDMI cable | Ultra High Speed certification, suitable connector, adequate length, intact plugs | The existing cable is the original Switch cable, damaged, excessively long for the setup, or fails the alternate-cable test. |
| Power adapter | At least 54 W for an alternative; USB-C output; regional electrical compatibility; undamaged cable | The NGN-01 is missing or damaged, and the replacement’s rating and regional use are documented. |
| Replacement dock | First test the cable, 54 W-or-higher power source, TV input, another HDMI port, and another display where possible | Another dock works with the same other equipment, or Nintendo support determines the original dock needs service. |
Official replacement status is a separate consideration from technical compatibility. If you choose a non-Nintendo accessory, retain its specifications and purchase information so you can verify what was tested if a fault develops.

- Using the old Switch HDMI cable: physical fit does not make it Ultra High Speed.
- Using the original HAC-002 adapter on the dock: it may power the console directly but does not provide enough dock power for TV mode.
- Connecting through a soundbar or splitter first: intermediary devices add another possible handshake or compatibility failure.
- Choosing the wrong TV input: the TV must match the socket occupied by the dock cable.
- Inserting the console backward: the screen should face the same direction as the dock’s front panel.
- Assuming charging proves video works: power delivery and HDMI output are separate parts of the setup.
- Buying a dock before testing basics: a cable, input, wall outlet, or adapter can create the same blank-screen symptom.
Quick checklist for a working setup
- Dock back cover opened and cables routed without strain.
- NGN-01 adapter connected to the dock and wall, or an alternative rated at least 54 W.
- Ultra High Speed HDMI cable connected directly from dock to TV.
- Console inserted with its screen facing the dock’s front panel.
- Console screen turns off after docking.
- TV set to the HDMI input receiving the dock signal.
- Soundbars, receivers, splitters, and adapters removed until direct video works.
Once every item is true, Switch 2 should use the television through its dock. If it remains blank, repeat the isolation sequence with a different HDMI port, a different Ultra High Speed cable, and—where possible—another TV or dock before arranging service.
