Nintendo’s U.S. listing estimates Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 at 1.2 GB, but that is not a confirmed installed size: the listing shows an October 27, 2026 release date, which is still in the future as of October 9, 2026. Nintendo has not published a Minecraft-specific update-size schedule or a confirmed total size after updates. You do not need an expansion card just to play; check your console’s available space before downloading.
How much space does Minecraft need on Switch 2?
Nintendo of America’s Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 product listing estimates a 1.2 GB game file. The listing displays an October 27, 2026 release date, later than October 9, 2026, so treat 1.2 GB as Nintendo’s current listing estimate—not a verified download, installed size, or post-update footprint.

The official Nintendo pages cited here do not state how large Minecraft updates will be or how much space the game will occupy after updates. The required free space can therefore change. For the current listing and your console’s actual available space, check the eShop and System Settings > Data Management.
How much Switch 2 storage is available?
Nintendo states that Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, with a portion reserved for system use. That means 256 GB is not all available for games. The free space on a particular console also depends on its system data and installed content. Nintendo’s data-management FAQ explains how to check storage on the console.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo says no individual games currently require additional storage space to play. You can use the available internal storage for Minecraft; an expansion card is optional if you want room for more games, updates, downloadable content, screenshots, or video.
What expansion card works with Switch 2?
For game storage expansion, Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says, “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” Standard microSD cards used with earlier Switch consoles are not a substitute for saving or loading digital games on Switch 2. See Nintendo’s card compatibility FAQ.

- EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. Transfer a 2-hour HD movie in less than 3.5 seconds [1]; save up to 2.8 minutes transferring 60 minutes of 4K UHD video [4] shot at 30 fps when paired with the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card (sold separately) [9]
- DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
- HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. They can store downloaded software, updates, and DLC, while game save data remains in system memory. Nintendo recommends using one card with the console: software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card. Its storage FAQ covers the supported capacity and storage behavior.

- Check the game listing: Open Minecraft’s Nintendo eShop listing and review the current file-size estimate. Because the listing can change, use the live figure rather than assuming the current estimate includes future updates.
- Check console storage: Open System Settings > Data Management to see available internal storage and, if inserted, microSD Express storage. System update 23.0.0, released September 9, 2026, added a breakdown of capacity by data type for system memory and microSD Express, according to Nintendo’s system update history.
- Decide whether to expand: If available space is sufficient, you can download to the console without buying a card. If you need more room, choose a card whose product listing explicitly identifies it as microSD Express for Nintendo Switch 2.
Should you buy a card for Minecraft?
Not solely to play Minecraft. Nintendo says no individual game currently requires additional storage, and the console has internal storage. Consider a card only if the space available on your console is insufficient for the software and media you want to keep. Nintendo’s cited guidance does not compare specific card brands, prices, or real-world performance, so choose based on your broader storage needs and confirmed microSD Express compatibility.
