Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of built-in storage, but some of that space is reserved for system use. Downloaded games can use System Memory or a compatible microSD Express card; save data stays in System Memory. Older Switch microSD cards cannot store or load Switch 2 games. Whether you need an expansion card depends on how much you download and how much space is available on your console.

How Switch 2 storage works

Think of storage as two separate things: installed game data and save data. Downloaded software, updates, and downloadable content can be stored in System Memory or on microSD Express. Game saves remain in the console’s System Memory, even when the game itself is on a card or microSD Express.

Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage, with a portion reserved for system use, so the full stated capacity is not available for games and other user data. Check your remaining space at System Settings → Data Management. Nintendo says no individual game currently requires an expansion card to play, though a download may still require enough free space.

Which microSD card works with Switch 2?

Only microSD Express cards are supported for storing Switch 2 game data. A regular microSD, microSDHC, or microSDXC card from the original Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 games or save data. Nintendo supports compliant microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. Cards are sold separately, and an internet system update is required the first time you use one.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

When inserted, a microSD Express card becomes the default location for downloadable software. It can also hold updates, DLC, screenshots, and captured video, but not save data. Nintendo recommends using one card: software kept across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto a single card.

When choosing a microSD Express card for Nintendo Switch 2, verify that the product explicitly meets the microSD Express standard and check its capacity, price, warranty terms, and Switch 2 compatibility. A card’s advertised speed is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee of real-world performance on the console. For example, SanDisk’s 2026 data sheet lists its licensed Switch 2 line in 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB capacities, with read speeds up to 880 MB/s; that is a manufacturer maximum dependent on host device and conditions, not an independent console test.

Do original Switch SD cards work on Switch 2?

Not for Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo says an older microSD card can be used to import screenshots and videos to Switch 2 System Memory, but it has no other Switch 2 use. You will need a microSD Express card if you want removable expansion for Switch 2 downloads.

Do game cards use console storage?

Standard physical game cards

A standard physical game card carries game data on the card, but a particular title may still need an additional download or free space. Check that game’s packaging or official software page for its storage requirements.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.

Game-key cards

A game-key card does not contain the full game; it contains the key needed to start it. The first time you play, the console needs an internet connection and enough free space in System Memory or on a microSD Express card to download the game. The package states the required free space. The key card must remain inserted whenever you launch the game.

Switch 2 Edition releases

Nintendo says physical Nintendo Switch 2 Edition releases include the Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack on the same game card. Some publishers may instead sell packaging that contains only a download code, with no game card, so check the exact edition before buying.

Where is Switch 2 save data stored?

Save data is stored in the console’s System Memory whether you play from a game card or a download. Nintendo does not support copying or saving game saves to microSD Express. If you delete downloaded software, its save data is not deleted; you can resume your progress after downloading the software again.

How to decide whether you need an expansion card

  • You mostly play physical releases: Check each game’s packaging for any required download or extra space. A standard game card carries game data, but a game-key card requires a full download.
  • You buy digital games or game-key cards: Check the required space for each title and monitor available capacity in System Settings → Data Management. An expansion card can provide more room for downloaded software.
  • You want to reuse an old Switch card: It cannot store Switch 2 games. Choose a microSD Express card if you need removable game storage.
  • You want to protect progress: Saves remain in System Memory, not on the expansion card. Deleting downloaded software does not erase its save data.
