Nintendo Switch 2 led U.S. video game hardware sales in both units and dollars in August 2026, and it held the same lead year to date through August. PlayStation 5 ranked second across both measures. Across all systems, 559,000 hardware units were sold in the United States—15% fewer than in August 2025 and the lowest August total since 2013.

Which system sold the most in the U.S. in August 2026?

Reported Circana figures show that Nintendo Switch 2 was the top-selling system in the United States in August, both by units sold and by hardware dollar sales. PlayStation 5 placed second in each measure. The same ordering held for the year-to-date period through August: Switch 2 led, followed by PS5.

The ranking is specific to the U.S. market and to the August reporting period. VGChartz describes that period as the four weeks from August 2 through August 29, 2026. VGChartz’s August coverage gives that date range; news reports reproducing Circana analyst Mat Piscatella’s figures provide the August ranking.

How much did U.S. hardware sales fall?

U.S. video game hardware sales totaled 559,000 units in August 2026, down 15% from August 2025, according to Circana figures reported by GamingBolt. That was the lowest total for an August since August 2013, when the reported figure was 423,000 units. This is an August-to-August historical comparison, not a claim that August 2026 was the lowest month of any kind.

  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Spending and unit sales moved by different amounts. U.S. hardware spending reached $302 million in August, down 3% year over year. Through August, year-to-date spending was $2.5 billion, down 11% from the comparable period. Circana figures reported by GamingBolt also put the average price paid for a new system at $541, an August record; the previous August record was $476 in 2025. That average reflects the mix and prices of systems purchased, not the listed price of a particular console.

How did the major platforms compare?

The reported year-over-year changes differ depending on whether the measure is units or dollars. Nintendo’s unit figure covers Nintendo hardware overall, while the spending figure specifically names Switch 2.

These platform changes, attributed to Circana reporting in GamingBolt’s coverage, show why unit rankings and spending trends should not be treated as interchangeable. PS5 hardware dollar sales rose even as its unit sales fell, while its second-place ranking does not mean it had the second-largest year-over-year increase.

Does the August decline have a confirmed cause?

The reported figures establish that fewer systems were sold than a year earlier, but they do not identify a single cause for the decline. In particular, comments about hardware prices, component costs, and comparisons with Switch 2’s launch concerned July market context. They do not, on their own, prove what drove August’s results. Circana’s public video-game reporting page describes its market reporting as point-of-sale data, but the August-specific figures here are reported through coverage quoting Piscatella rather than a complete public August dataset.
