Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but compatibility is decided title by title. Some games run normally, some need an original Joy-Con for a feature, some have startup or progression issues, and a small number cannot be used. Free enhancements and paid upgrades are optional, game-specific programs rather than requirements for the entire Switch library.

Can you play Nintendo Switch games on Nintendo Switch 2?

Yes, provided the individual game is compatible. Nintendo Switch 2 accepts compatible Switch game cards and can download digital Switch purchases after you link the Nintendo Account that owns them. Nintendo’s official compatibility guide and transfer guidance both describe this as a title-specific capability, not a guarantee for every release.

The reason for the exceptions is hardware. Nintendo states: “The Nintendo Switch 2 system’s hardware is different from that of Nintendo Switch, and some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.” A game can therefore fall into several practical categories: it may launch and play normally, launch with a limited mode, show a known startup or progression problem, receive an enhancement update, or fail to start at all.

Nintendo’s general compatibility status information is dated June 5, 2025. Because testing results, patches and publisher support change, Nintendo directs buyers to the current page for the individual game or its Nintendo eShop listing. For a third-party title, Nintendo also recommends contacting that game’s publisher for the latest information.

  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games

Compatibility is different from an enhancement

A compatible game does not automatically need a special Switch 2 update. Compatibility means the existing software can be used; an enhancement is an additional change that may improve graphics, frame rate, loading, controls or multiplayer.

Status What it means What you should check
Compatible The game starts and is usable on Switch 2. Whether a particular mode or accessory has a limitation.
Free Switch 2 update The publisher provides selected improvements without charging for the update. The game’s update description and availability date.
Paid upgrade A separate purchase adds content or performance improvements for an eligible Switch game. Price, eligibility and included features on the current game listing.
Starts with an issue The game launches but may have a known in-game, progress or function problem. Nintendo’s live issue notices and the publisher’s patch status.
Unable to start The software does not run on Switch 2. The current compatibility page before purchasing or transferring it.

Free updates are not universal. Nintendo’s product guidance says, “The contents of these free updates will differ depending on the game.” A compatible title can remain unchanged, receive only a technical fix, or offer a more substantial Switch 2 edition. Do not treat an enhancement listing as proof that every other Switch game requires one.

How to check a specific game before buying

  1. Open the game’s current Nintendo page or eShop entry. Look for a Switch 2 compatibility notice, a free-update entry, an upgrade option, or a warning about a mode or accessory. This title-level information is newer and more useful than relying on a general list saved from an earlier date.
  2. Identify the way you will own it. A physical Switch card can be inserted directly. A digital purchase must be associated with the Nintendo Account you link to Switch 2 before it can be downloaded.
  3. Read the controller and accessory notes. Check whether the game uses an infrared camera, a Ring-Con, a leg strap, Nintendo Labo hardware or another physical attachment. These requirements can affect one feature rather than the entire game.
  4. Check Nintendo’s issue documents from the live compatibility page. Nintendo maintains separate information for games that cannot start or cannot progress correctly, and for problems fixed or expected to be fixed by updates. Treat an older saved copy of a list as historical, not as a current guarantee.
  5. For a third-party game, verify with its publisher. Nintendo’s own compatibility information may not describe a publisher’s latest patch schedule or support decision.

Games that need original Joy-Con or have accessory limits

Joy-Con 2 controllers do not include the original Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera and do not fit every older physical accessory. Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the console. Charging them requires a Switch console or a compatible Joy-Con charging accessory. The need for an original controller may apply only to one activity or mode.

Ring Fit Adventure

Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Ring-Con or fit in the leg strap. Use original Switch Joy-Con attached to the Ring-Con for the game’s exercise controls.

1-2-Switch

Modes that use infrared features require an original right Joy-Con connected wirelessly, because Joy-Con 2 has no IR Motion Camera.

Game Builder Garage

The IR Motion Camera Nodon and IR-Light Nodon in Free Programming require an original right Joy-Con.

Nintendo Switch Sports

Joy-Con 2 does not fit the leg strap used by Soccer Shoot-Out. An original Joy-Con is required for that activity.

WarioWare: Move It!

Microgames that use the IR camera require an original right Joy-Con.

Everybody 1-2-Switch!

Joy-Con 2’s reduced force-feedback vibration can make hidden-controller play in Joy-Con Hide & Seek more difficult. The game is not the same as being wholly unusable, but that mode can be affected.

Nintendo Labo

Physical Toy-Con designs create several separate fit constraints. Switch 2 cannot be inserted into the VR Goggles for Toy-Con 04, and it does not fit some Toy-Con 01 accessories. The Toy-Con 02 Robot accessory cannot attach to Joy-Con 2, although original Joy-Con can be used. Check the exact kit and activity rather than assuming every Labo project has the same limitation.

Nintendo Blue/Neon Yellow Joy-Con (L-R) - Switch

  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy 2 player action in supported games

What does not work, and what has known issues?

Software listed as unusable

Nintendo’s compatibility page identifies Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit as unusable because the Switch 2 console cannot fit into its Toy-Con VR Goggles. The same page lists the applications Niconico, ABEMA, Hulu, Crunchyroll and InkyPen as unusable. Those application entries are not evidence that retail game cards with similar names or publishers are incompatible; keep app compatibility separate from game compatibility.

Games with startup or progression problems

Nintendo links separate official documents for Switch games that fail to start or prevent progress, plus a document for issues fixed or expected to be fixed by an update. Search-result examples have included Alan Wake Remastered, Alien: Isolation, Factorio, Fall Guys and Palia. That example set is not a complete catalog, and a search snippet does not establish whether a particular problem is currently fixed. Open the live Nintendo page and the publisher’s support notice for the version you intend to play.

An issue can be narrower than a crash: a game may launch but block a save, stop progression, break a feature or affect only one mode. Installing an available game update is sensible, but do not assume every listed issue has already been resolved or that an update is guaranteed for every title.

Which games have free Switch 2 updates?

Nintendo’s free-update list is a selected catalog. The following entries illustrate how specific the improvements and dates are:

Game Availability date listed by Nintendo Enhancements listed
Animal Crossing: New Horizons January 15, 2026 Visual optimization
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD January 20, 2026 Visual optimization and local GameShare support
Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet June 5, 2025 Visual and frame-rate improvements
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe September 1, 2026 Visual improvements, faster loading, expanded local multiplayer and CameraPlay support subject to Nintendo’s stated conditions

The date in this table is the availability date Nintendo lists, not a promise that the update is required to launch the base game. Nintendo also notes that some games offer paid upgrades with additional content or improved performance. Because eligibility and pricing are title-specific, check the current game listing rather than applying one upgrade rule to the whole library.

Physical cards, digital purchases and storage

Physical games

Insert a compatible Nintendo Switch game card into Switch 2. Physical ownership does not bypass a title’s compatibility limits, controller requirements or update needs; the card only determines how the software is delivered.

Digital games

Link the Nintendo Account that owns the purchase, then download the compatible game. If several accounts are used in a household, confirm which account bought the software before attempting a transfer or redownload.

Storage expansion

Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for storage expansion and does not use conventional Switch microSD cards as game storage. Older cards can still be used to view screenshots and videos captured on Switch, but changing the memory card will not repair an incompatible game or remove a controller limitation. Treat microSD Express as a capacity solution for a digital library, not as a compatibility fix.

A practical decision guide

  • You only need the game to run: verify the individual title’s compatibility status, then choose a physical card or digital license.
  • You want the best graphics or frame rate: look for a listed free update or paid upgrade and read exactly which improvements are included.
  • You use fitness, IR, motion or Labo equipment: budget for original Joy-Con or the required accessory, and confirm physical fit before buying.
  • You are transferring an older digital library: link the owning Nintendo Account and check each important game rather than assuming the entire library transfers equally.
  • A game is on an issue list: determine whether the problem affects startup, progression or only a feature, then check the latest Nintendo and publisher notices before committing.

Why compatibility information can change

Switch 2 hardware behavior, game patches and publisher support are moving targets. Nintendo’s overall status page carries the June 5, 2025 date, while its free-update catalog includes entries posted through September 2026. A title that had an issue can receive a fix, and a newly discovered limitation can appear after the general page’s testing date. Use the individual Nintendo game page or eShop listing as the final check immediately before purchase, and consult the publisher for third-party software.
