For most buyers, the sensible Nintendo Switch 2 purchase is the console with the game you actually plan to play. The box already supplies Joy-Con 2 controllers and a Switch 2 dock, so a second controller, travel case, screen protector, or replacement power adapter is optional. The one add-on that can become essential is a microSD Express card if your downloaded library will outgrow the console’s internal storage.
Choose a bundle only after comparing its current local price and contents with buying the console and the same game separately. Prices, stock, retailer discounts, and bundle contents vary by country and date; Nintendo Life’s guide, updated September 21, 2026, records a Nintendo retail-price increase effective September 1, 2026, while noting that some retailers may temporarily retain older prices.
What comes in a Nintendo Switch 2 box
The included hardware is enough to play in handheld, tabletop, or TV mode immediately. Nintendo’s official accessory catalog identifies the Switch 2 dock as part of the system package, and the console is supplied with a pair of Joy-Con 2 controllers. Confirm the exact contents on the regional product page before ordering, particularly when a retailer labels a package as a special edition or bundle.

|---|---|---|
| Switch 2 console | The main Switch 2 system | Required |
| Joy-Con 2 controllers | Controllers supplied with the console | A second controller is a preference, not a requirement |
| Switch 2 dock | Dock included with the system for TV play | Do not budget for a separate dock unless you want a spare |
| Game | Present only when specifically listed in a bundle | Check the bundle description rather than assuming a game is included |
| microSD Express card | Sold separately | Needed only when internal storage will not cover your downloads |
| Switch 2 Pro Controller | Sold separately | Useful for players who prefer a traditional gamepad |
| Carrying case and screen protector | Sold separately; Nintendo offers them as a matched Switch 2 accessory option | Most useful for people who regularly transport the console |
Nintendo’s official Switch 2 accessory catalog is the best place to verify the package and accessory names for your region. Product names and availability can differ between markets.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Console-only or bundle: how to decide
A bundle is not automatically cheaper. Its value depends on whether you would have bought every included item anyway, and whether the current local price is lower than the equivalent separate purchases. A bundle containing a game you do not want can cost more in practical terms than a console-only package, even when its headline price appears attractive.
Use this three-part comparison
- Record the current local totals. Write down the price of the console-only package and the price of each available bundle in your country. Nintendo Life’s Switch 2 buying guide tracks US and UK listings, but its figures are time-sensitive and should not be generalized to another market.
- Separate wanted items from filler. Give full value only to a game, accessory, or other item you would independently purchase. A title that you would never play should not be counted as a saving.
- Check the package contents and availability. Confirm whether the game is a physical card, a download entitlement, or absent; check that the listing is in stock; and verify that the advertised package is for the correct regional model.
| Buying route | Best fit | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Console only | You already own a preferred game or want to choose one later | That the listing includes the dock and Joy-Con 2 |
| Game bundle | You definitely want the included game | Current combined price, exact game edition, and whether the game is physical or digital |
| Special accessory bundle | You need the listed accessory immediately | Whether the accessory is Switch 2-specific and whether the package costs less than separate purchases |
Do not use launch-era pricing as a benchmark. Nintendo Life reports that Nintendo’s retail pricing changed on September 1, 2026, and that retailers may briefly show earlier prices. Treat any price seen in an older article or cached listing as historical until the retailer confirms it at checkout.
Storage: buy microSD Express, not a regular microSD card
Switch 2 is designed exclusively for microSD Express cards for game-storage expansion. Nintendo says a conventional microSD card can be used only to view or import screenshots and videos captured on a Nintendo Switch; it is not the expansion card to buy for storing Switch 2 games. Look for the word “Express” or the “EX” marking on both the product listing and the card itself. The compatibility details are documented in Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 compatibility guide.
Choose capacity from your library, not a universal rule
The available evidence does not establish one capacity that is right for every owner. Estimate how many games you expect to download, how often you delete and redownload titles, and what the current price difference is between capacities in your region. Someone who buys mostly physical game cards may need less expansion than a digital-only player, while a household with several users may fill storage faster.

- NEXT GEN GAMING: Works with Nintendo Switch 2.
- READY FOR TOMORROW. Ready for future products with a PCIe-NVMe interface; performs at UHS-I speeds with microSD UHS-I and UHS-II devices.
- EXPONENTIALLY FASTER PERFORMANCE. Up to 4.4 times faster transfer speeds than our fastest microSD UHS-I cards [9]. Transfer a 2-hour HD movie in less than 3.5 seconds [1]; save up to 2.8 minutes transferring 60 minutes of 4K UHD video [4] shot at 30 fps when paired with the SanDisk PRO-READER SD Express Dual Card (sold separately) [9]
- DURABILITY YOU CAN COUNT ON: Cards are waterproof, temperature-proof, humidity-proof, drop-proof, shock-proof, magnetic-proof, x-ray proof, and wear-out proof [5].
- HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
- Check the capacity printed on the card and its listing before buying.
- Confirm that the listing explicitly says microSD Express; “microSD” alone is insufficient.
- Keep screenshots and video-transfer needs separate from game-storage needs: an ordinary card’s limited media use does not make it suitable for installing games.
- Compare current regional pricing rather than relying on an old capacity recommendation.
What happens if you buy the wrong card
A standard microSD card may appear to fit physically, but it will not serve as the game-storage expansion Nintendo specifies for Switch 2. Return it if the seller’s policy allows, and do not erase or move your existing media until you have confirmed that the replacement is an Express card.
Controllers: when the included Joy-Con 2 are enough
Joy-Con 2 are included, so the console supports handheld and multiplayer play without another controller purchase. Add a controller only for a specific use case: a second player, longer traditional game sessions, or a preference for a larger gamepad.
The Switch 2 Pro Controller
Nintendo identifies the Switch 2 Pro Controller as a distinct model. It includes a C button and GL/GR rear buttons, features that differentiate it from the original Switch Pro Controller. Editorial accessory coverage recommends considering it for players who prefer a conventional controller, but that is a comfort and control preference rather than a system requirement. See the TechRadar Gaming Switch 2 accessory guide for the editorial rationale behind choosing a dedicated controller.

Yes. Nintendo says the original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, making it a practical carry-over purchase for an existing owner. It does not provide the newer Switch 2 Pro Controller’s model-specific C, GL, and GR controls, so decide whether those controls matter for the games you play.

Can original Joy-Con carry over?
Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the Switch 2 console. Their charging also requires an original Switch or a compatible charging accessory. This makes them useful as occasional wireless controllers, not a replacement for the supplied Joy-Con 2 in handheld mode.
Old docks, chargers, and other accessories
“Works with Nintendo Switch” on an accessory label does not guarantee complete Switch 2 compatibility. Nintendo distinguishes between wireless pairing, physical attachment, charging, and TV output; check the specific item against Nintendo’s differences guide for Switch 2 and Switch accessories and the detailed compatibility guide.
| Original accessory | Switch 2 behavior | Practical consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Original Switch dock | Not compatible with Switch 2 | Keep the Switch 2 dock for TV mode |
| Original Switch AC adapter | Can charge Switch 2 when connected directly to the console | It cannot provide TV mode through the Switch 2 dock |
| Original Switch Pro Controller | Pairs wirelessly | Can be reused if you do not need the newer controller’s additional controls |
| Original Joy-Con | Pair wirelessly but cannot attach to Switch 2 | Use them as wireless controllers; charge them with an original Switch or compatible charger |
| Original Joy-Con accessories | Several are incompatible with Joy-Con 2 | Check each accessory instead of assuming a fit |
Cases and screen protection
A case and screen protector are sensible purchases for a console that travels, but they are not needed to start playing at home. Choose products explicitly designed for Switch 2: editorial coverage cautions that cases and protectors made for the original Switch may not fit the larger system. Nintendo’s accessory catalog lists a Switch 2-specific case and screen protector together.

Standard carrying case
Nintendo’s Switch 2 carrying case holds the console and up to six game cards. It suits handheld travel when you do not need to bring the dock, power cables, and TV accessories.

- EPIC WORLDS, LOADED INSTANTLY. From the Mushroom Kingdom to Hyrule, your card delivers read speeds up to 880 MB/s[2] and write speeds up to 650 MB/s[2].
- OFFICIALLY READY FOR NINTENDO SWITCH 2. Officially licensed for Nintendo Switch 2, this microSD Express card offers dependable, high-performance storage.
- CAPTURE IN STUNNING CLARITY. Capture screenshots and record short video clips of your gameplay in Full HD.
- ROOM FOR YOUR ADVENTURES. With capacities up to 512GB[1], your card gives you the freedom to store your digital games in one place.
All-in-one case
The larger all-in-one carrying case can hold the console, dock, Joy-Con 2, cables, and up to six game cards. It is aimed at people who regularly move a complete TV setup. For commuting with only the handheld, its extra size is unnecessary.
Who should buy a screen protector?
- Buy one before frequent travel, shared household use, or repeated dock insertion if preventing scratches is a priority.
- Choose a protector labeled for Switch 2 rather than reusing an original-Switch protector.
- If the console will stay docked in one location, protection can be deferred until your use pattern justifies it.
A practical buying workflow
- Choose your primary play pattern. Decide whether you will mainly play handheld, on a TV, with multiple players, or with digital downloads. This determines whether travel protection, a traditional controller, or storage should be first on your list.
- Select the console package. Confirm that the listing includes Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 dock. If a game is included, identify the exact game and format.
- Price the game separately. Compare the bundle’s current local total with the console-only price plus the game you would actually buy. Exclude unwanted bundle items from your personal value calculation.
- Plan storage before ordering a card. Estimate your digital library, then shop for a card explicitly marked microSD Express or EX. Do not substitute a conventional microSD card.
- Audit accessories you already own. An original Pro Controller can carry over wirelessly; original Joy-Con cannot attach; the original dock cannot be reused; and the original AC adapter is limited to direct console charging rather than TV-mode power through the new dock.
- Add protection based on travel. Select a Switch 2-specific case or screen protector only if you carry the system or want scratch protection. Choose the all-in-one case when the dock and cables travel with you.
- Recheck regional terms at checkout. Retail prices, stock, included games, and discounts can change. A listing that was a good value when published may not be the best current option.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Paying for a bundle you will not use
Symptom: The bundle looks cheaper than buying several items, but the included game or accessory is unwanted. Fix: Recalculate using only items you would purchase independently and compare the current local totals.
Ordering a standard microSD card
Symptom: The card is labeled microSD but not Express or EX. Fix: Do not treat it as Switch 2 game expansion; exchange it for a microSD Express model.

Symptom: An original Switch dock is available, but it does not support Switch 2. Fix: Use the dock supplied with Switch 2; the original dock is not a compatible substitute.
Assuming the old charger supports every mode
Symptom: The original AC adapter charges the console directly but does not power TV mode through the Switch 2 dock. Fix: Keep the Switch 2 dock and its appropriate power setup for television use.

Minimum, sensible, and full setups
Minimum setup
Buy the console package and a game. Use the included Joy-Con 2 and dock. This is sufficient for handheld, tabletop, and TV play.
Sensible digital setup
Buy the console package, your chosen game, and a correctly labeled microSD Express card sized for the digital library you expect. Add a case or protector if the system will travel.
Full living-room and travel setup
Buy the console package, a Switch 2 Pro Controller if you prefer a traditional gamepad, a Switch 2-specific screen protector, and either the standard case or the all-in-one case depending on whether the dock and cables move with you. Existing original Pro Controllers can reduce the need for a new one, while the original dock cannot replace the supplied Switch 2 dock.
