If preserving the Switch 2 battery over years matters more than squeezing out every minute from each charge, enable HOME Menu → System Settings → System → Stop Charging Around 90%. Nintendo says the limit can slow battery deterioration, although the console may occasionally charge to 100% to calibrate its battery indicator.
The Joy-Con 2 charging grip is a separate accessory. It charges the Joy-Con 2 controllers; it does not charge the Switch 2 console or replace the console’s battery-health setting.
The setting to use with a charging grip
A charging grip does not change how the Switch 2 manages its internal battery. The practical choice is controlled by the console’s own Stop Charging Around 90% option.
- Turn it on when the console is usually docked, or when extending battery capacity over the long term is more important than having the maximum possible charge for every handheld session.
- Turn it off temporarily before an unusually long trip, flight or gaming session when you need the extra capacity. You can enable it again for routine charging.
- Leave it on while using a Joy-Con 2 charging grip. The grip’s charging circuit is for the controllers, so the console setting remains relevant independently.
Nintendo does not publish a guaranteed runtime reduction for the 90% mode. Treat it as a battery-longevity trade-off, not as a mode with a measured, fixed number of minutes removed from every session.

What “Stop Charging Around 90%” actually does
It reduces time spent at a full charge
The option asks the console to stop routine charging at approximately 90% instead of continually targeting 100%. Nintendo describes this as a way to help slow battery deterioration. Lithium-ion batteries naturally lose capacity as they age; avoiding a full state of charge for every cycle can reduce one source of stress, but it cannot prevent normal aging.
It can still show 100%
Seeing the indicator reach 100% occasionally does not mean the option failed. Nintendo says the console may charge fully from time to time so it can calibrate the battery-level indicator. The feature is therefore an approximate charging limit, not a permanent 90% ceiling.
It does not guarantee a particular battery life
The setting changes charging behavior, not the power consumed by a game, display brightness, wireless connection or other function. Nintendo gives a broad expected range for a fully charged Switch 2, and actual time varies with software and functions. No official figure states exactly how much shorter a session will be when the console begins at roughly 90%.
How to enable or disable the 90% limit
- From the Switch 2 HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Select System in the left-hand list.
- Choose Stop Charging Around 90%.
- Set the option to enabled for routine battery-preservation charging, or disabled when you need a full charge.
- Return to the HOME Menu. The console applies the choice to subsequent charging sessions; no charging-grip setting is required.
For a mostly handheld routine, keep the limit enabled and disable it only for a planned long session. For a console that spends most of its time in the dock, enabling it is a sensible default because the console can remain connected without needing to reach 100% every time.

What the Joy-Con 2 charging grip does—and does not do
Its job is charging the controllers
The official Joy-Con 2 charging grip is model BEE-010. Insert the Joy-Con 2 controllers into the grip and connect the grip to power. Its charging circuit replenishes the controllers; it does not feed power into the Switch 2 console’s internal battery and does not extend the console’s handheld runtime.
Use the specified cable and power route
Nintendo’s 2025 leaflet specifies the supplied BEE-016 USB charging cable. The recommended route is to connect that cable from the BEE-010 grip to a USB port on the Switch 2 dock. Nintendo also lists compatibility with a USB-C power adapter that supplies 5 V and 1.5 A (7.5 W).
- Place each Joy-Con 2 controller fully into the BEE-010 grip.
- Connect the BEE-016 cable to the grip’s charging port.
- Connect the other end to the Switch 2 dock, or to a compatible USB-C adapter rated for 5 V/1.5 A (7.5 W).
- Confirm the controllers are seated and charging before putting the setup away.
Do not assume that an unverified third-party grip is electrically equivalent. Compatibility, connector wiring and power specifications must be confirmed for the particular accessory before use.
Recommended setups by playing pattern
Mostly docked
Enable Stop Charging Around 90%. The console may stay in the dock between sessions. Nintendo says charging stops automatically after the battery becomes fully charged, so leaving the console connected does not create an overcharging condition. The 90% option is still useful because it is intended to reduce unnecessary time at a full charge.

Mostly handheld
Keep the limit enabled for normal charging. Before a day when a charger will be unavailable, disable it, charge fully, and restore the limit afterward. Because Nintendo does not promise a runtime figure for this mode, decide based on how much reserve you need rather than expecting a specific percentage-to-hours conversion.
Handheld play with the grip connected
The grip is for Joy-Con 2 charging and does not alter the console’s battery setting. Charge the controllers separately through the BEE-010 and manage the console with the System Settings option described above.
Long-term storage
Store the console and controllers in a dry place within normal indoor conditions. Nintendo advises charging the Switch 2 at least once every six months, even when it is not being used. Do not leave the system stored for years with a completely depleted battery.
Runtime, recharge time and what counts as normal

A full charge that lasts close to two hours in a demanding game is not automatically a fault, because Nintendo’s range depends on software and functions. A console that charges fully but cannot approach the published range under comparable use is a different case and may require service.

Charging conditions that protect the battery
Keep the temperature in range
Nintendo’s charging guidance specifies 5°C to 35°C. Charge indoors within that range and avoid charging in direct sun, inside a hot vehicle or beside a heat source. If the console or grip is unusually hot, stop charging and let it return to a normal temperature before trying again.
Do not worry about overcharging
Nintendo states that charging stops automatically after the battery becomes fully charged. Leaving the Switch 2 connected to its dock or AC adapter therefore does not overcharge the battery. The 90% option is about reducing battery stress over time, not about preventing an immediate safety problem.
Use a suitable power source
For the charging grip, use the BEE-016 cable with the Switch 2 dock or a USB-C adapter capable of 5 V/1.5 A (7.5 W), as specified by Nintendo. For the console itself, use the Switch 2 dock and Nintendo-compatible power equipment rather than guessing from a connector that happens to fit.

This distinction prevents the most common purchasing mistake: buying a charging grip expecting it to increase the Switch 2’s own battery capacity. It cannot; it only keeps the controllers charged.

Troubleshooting battery and grip problems
The console stops near 90% and you expected 100%
Check System Settings → System → Stop Charging Around 90%. If it is enabled, stopping near that level is the intended behavior. Disable it before a long session that requires maximum capacity. Occasional 100% charging can still occur for calibration.
The console reaches 100% but runtime is poor
Compare usage with Nintendo’s 2-to-6.5-hour guidance while accounting for the game, screen brightness, wireless features and other functions. If the battery cannot approach the expected range under comparable conditions, contact Nintendo for service. Lithium-ion capacity decline is normal, but a sudden or extreme loss is not explained by the 90% setting alone.
The grip does not charge the Joy-Con 2 controllers
- Reseat both controllers so their contacts are fully engaged.
- Check that the BEE-016 cable is firmly connected at the grip and power source.
- Try the Switch 2 dock, or verify that the USB-C adapter can provide 5 V/1.5 A (7.5 W).
- Inspect the cable and connectors for damage, dirt or moisture, and stop using damaged equipment.
- Test the controllers and grip separately if possible; a working console battery does not prove that the grip’s charging circuit is functioning.
Charging is unusually slow
Charging while the console is in use takes longer than charging while it is powered off or in sleep mode. Nintendo’s approximately three-hour figure applies to the latter conditions. High temperature, an unsuitable adapter or a damaged cable can also reduce or interrupt charging.
