Nintendo Switch 2 does not play original Wii discs or run Wii software directly. Its backward-compatibility promise covers compatible physical and digital games released for the Nintendo Switch. A Wii-era title is playable only when Nintendo released a separate Nintendo Switch edition and that Switch edition is compatible with Switch 2.
That distinction makes games such as The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD and Donkey Kong Country Returns HD playable on Switch 2, while the original Wii discs remain unsupported. Nintendo has also announced GameCube classics for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack; that announcement does not establish a Wii classics library.
The direct answer: Wii discs do not work on Switch 2
A Wii optical disc is not a Nintendo Switch game card, and Switch 2 has no stated mode for installing or emulating Wii software from that disc. Nintendo describes Switch 2 compatibility in terms of Nintendo Switch software, not software made for the Wii. Nintendo also says that Nintendo Switch itself does not include backward compatibility with software designed for older systems.

There is no supported process for copying the disc, downloading a Switch version from it, or transferring its license.

What Nintendo Switch 2 backward compatibility actually covers
Nintendo’s support guidance states that Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch system. The important words are compatible and Nintendo Switch. A game must exist as a Switch release first; then its individual compatibility status determines whether it runs on Switch 2.
Original Wii releases
The original release on a Wii disc is not a Switch 2-compatible software format. Even if the title is popular or technically similar to a later Switch edition, the Wii product itself is not converted automatically. You need the later Switch edition, sold separately in physical or digital form when available.
Wii and Wii U digital purchases
Nintendo’s older-system transfer support says purchases from older-system eShops do not carry over to Nintendo Switch. That means a Wii or Wii U digital purchase does not become a Switch 2 entitlement merely because the same game later appears on Switch. If a publisher released a Switch edition, it is a different release with its own purchase and compatibility status.

Nintendo Switch physical and digital editions
A Switch game card or Switch digital license can be used on Switch 2 when Nintendo lists that title as compatible. Compatibility can vary by game, so the correct check is the specific Switch release rather than the name of the older Wii game. A physical Wii copy and a physical Switch copy should be treated as two separate products.

Wii-era games that have a Switch edition
The following examples show how the rule works. They are Wii-era games with Nintendo Switch releases, not examples of Switch 2 reading Wii software.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD
Skyward Sword HD is a Nintendo Switch edition of the game first released for Wii. Nintendo lists a physical Switch edition. That Switch edition is the version to consider for Switch 2 compatibility; an original Wii disc is not a substitute and does not provide a transfer entitlement.
When comparing copies, check that the listing identifies the Nintendo Switch version and not the Wii product. Physical packaging, the platform label and the game-card format are the useful checks. For a digital purchase, confirm that the purchase is made for Nintendo Switch and review Nintendo’s current compatibility information for that title.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is available for Nintendo Switch and presents the platform version of a game whose design originated on Wii. Nintendo describes it as playable in the style first designed for Wii and includes an option to reduce difficulty. Nintendo’s support material also documents updates for the game on Switch 2.

Those details describe the HD Switch release. They do not mean that a Wii copy receives an HD upgrade or that the Wii disc can be inserted into Switch 2. If you own the Wii version, you would need to acquire the Switch edition to use the game on Switch 2.

Does Nintendo Switch Online add Wii games?
Nintendo’s Switch 2 announcement describes Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics as a growing library for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members. That is a GameCube catalog. It does not announce a Wii classics catalog, and the announcement should not be read as saying that an Expansion Pack subscription unlocks a member’s Wii collection.
A subscription also cannot convert a Wii disc or an old Wii eShop purchase into a Switch game. If Nintendo adds a Wii title to a future service, it would be a separately provided catalog version; the availability and requirements would need to be checked in the current service listing. Do not assume that a GameCube release, a Wii release or a Switch remake shares the same save data, controls or license.

How to check whether a specific Wii-era game works
Use this process whenever a game is not one of the named examples. It prevents the most common mistake: checking the Wii product instead of the Switch release.

- Identify the exact edition. Write down whether your copy is Wii, Wii U, Nintendo Switch physical or Nintendo Switch digital. The platform printed on the box or shown in the store listing matters more than the game’s subtitle.
- Search for an official Switch release. If Nintendo or the publisher never released the game for Nintendo Switch, the original Wii copy has no Switch 2 route established by Nintendo’s compatibility policy.
- Open the Switch 2 compatibility information. Check the title-specific listing for the Switch edition. Nintendo warns that compatibility can vary by title, so do not generalize from another game in the same series.
- Confirm the purchase format. For a cartridge, use the Nintendo Switch game card. For a download, use the Nintendo Switch digital listing and the Nintendo Account that owns it. A Wii or Wii U eShop receipt is not evidence of a Switch license.
- Check updates and requirements. Some games may require a software update or have platform-specific notes. Install the latest available update for the Switch edition before troubleshooting launch problems.
- Test the correct copy. If a Wii disc fails, that is expected and does not prove that the Switch edition is incompatible. Test the Switch release itself, then consult Nintendo’s support page if that release produces an error.
Common misconceptions and what to do instead
“Switch 2 has a disc drive, so my Wii discs should work.”
Switch 2’s stated compatibility is software-based and concerns Nintendo Switch releases. A Wii optical disc uses a different platform format. Do not insert or attempt to transfer it; find the game’s Nintendo Switch edition instead.
“I bought the game digitally before Switch existed.”
Older-system eShop purchases do not automatically transfer to Nintendo Switch. Check whether Nintendo or the publisher offers a Switch edition and treat that edition as a new platform release.
“A Wii-era game in a subscription catalog must be the Wii version.”
Catalog services identify the platform version they provide. Nintendo’s cited Switch 2 announcement identifies GameCube classics, not Wii classics. Read the catalog entry rather than inferring a Wii library from the subscription name.
“Every Switch game runs perfectly on Switch 2.”
Nintendo uses the term compatible rather than promising identical behavior for every title. Verify the individual game, apply updates and follow any title-specific instructions. A compatibility question about Skyward Sword HD, for example, concerns the Switch HD edition, not the original Wii software.

How to choose the right version when buying or borrowing

This approach also avoids buying the wrong listing. A retailer may show several generations of the same game; select the Nintendo Switch product when the target console is Switch 2. The Wii edition can still be useful for a Wii system, but it is not the edition covered by Switch 2 backward compatibility.
What could change later
Nintendo can release additional Switch ports or expand its classic-game catalogs. A future announcement could therefore add more ways to play games that originated on Wii. Until Nintendo lists such a release, the reliable rule remains: original Wii software is not supported directly, while a separately released Nintendo Switch edition must be checked title by title.
For the most current answer about a particular game, look for three pieces of information together: the game’s platform label, Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility status and any required update or service condition. Those checks distinguish a genuine Switch 2 option from a Wii disc or older digital purchase that cannot transfer.
