Yes—Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but it is not fully backward compatible. A small number of games have startup or in-game problems, original accessories have important restrictions, and ordinary microSD cards cannot store Switch 2 games. Check Nintendo’s live compatibility lists for the specific title you own, because support can change with updates.
Can I play Nintendo Switch games on Nintendo Switch 2?
Most compatible Nintendo Switch game cards and digital purchases run on Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo separates compatibility into two practical questions: whether a game launches and whether it works correctly after launching. A title can pass the first test yet still have an in-game problem, such as a missing feature, visual fault or control issue. Nintendo maintains separate lists for games with startup issues and games with in-game compatibility issues on its software-compatibility support page and its Nintendo Switch game compatibility FAQ.
That means “backward compatible” is not a guarantee for every title. Before buying an upgrade or deleting an old console, check the current Nintendo list and, for a third-party game, look for the publisher’s own compatibility notice.

Three checks that should not be confused
- Launch: the game starts on Switch 2.
- Full operation: gameplay, menus, controls, online functions and other features work as intended.
- Save migration: your progress can be moved or restored on the new console.
A game may pass one check and fail another. Save eligibility is governed by transfer and save rules, not simply by whether the game card runs.
#1 Best Overall
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Compatibility by game format
| Software or card | What happens on Switch 2 | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible physical Nintendo Switch game card | Insert the card and play on Switch 2. | Some titles are unsupported or have startup or in-game issues; verify the live list. |
| Compatible digital Nintendo Switch game | Download or access it with the Nintendo Account that owns it, subject to Nintendo’s transfer and virtual-game-card rules. | Digital ownership does not override title compatibility. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive card | Runs on Switch 2. | It does not run on the original Nintendo Switch. |
| Switch 2 Edition card | On an original Switch, the underlying Switch version runs when supported. | Switch 2-only enhancements and Edition content are unavailable on the original console. |
Physical cards
For a physical Switch game, compatibility is checked at the title level. If Nintendo lists the game as compatible, the card can be used in Switch 2. A card that launches may still need a software update or may retain a documented in-game defect, so confirm both launch and gameplay status before assuming a perfect experience.
Digital purchases
Digital games follow the Nintendo Account that purchased them. During a move to Switch 2, Nintendo’s transfer process downloads digital software to the target console after setup rather than copying a physical file from one machine to the other. Access can also depend on Nintendo’s current virtual game card and online-license arrangements, particularly if you keep both consoles.
Switch 2 games and Switch 2 Editions
Compatibility is one-way. A Switch 2-exclusive game cannot be played on the original Switch. A Switch 2 Edition provides a Switch version for the older console, but the Edition’s Switch 2-only graphics, modes or other enhancements are not available there. Do not assume that a game labeled “Edition” is a two-way upgrade.

How to verify a specific game
Nintendo’s lists are live documents, not a permanent catalog. Updates can resolve or introduce problems, and the current pages may change after a game patch. Use this sequence for each important title:
- Search Nintendo’s compatibility support page for the exact game name and region.
- Check whether it appears under startup issues or under games that launch with in-game issues.
- Read the notes for required updates, unavailable modes or known workarounds.
- Check whether the publisher offers a Switch 2 patch or a Switch 2 Edition.
- Confirm that your save method—system transfer, cloud feature or the game’s own migration tool—is supported.
If the title is not listed, that is not proof that every feature works. Nintendo advises contacting the publisher for specific third-party information. For a critical game, verify launch behavior, feature support and save handling separately.
Can I transfer my games and save data to Switch 2?
Nintendo’s Transfer Guide and system-transfer instructions describe moving digital software, eligible save data, linked accounts and settings. A transfer requires an internet connection and a Nintendo Account linked to the consoles. Digital games are downloaded on the target after the transfer and initial setup.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
Transfer eligibility differs by data type and by the method you choose. Do not describe every save as guaranteed to move. Nintendo specifically notes that some shared-save games, including Animal Crossing: New Horizons, cannot use the standard system-transfer route and require the game’s supported procedure instead.
Prepare before starting
- Update both consoles and connect them to reliable internet.
- Have the Nintendo Account credentials available and link the account required for digital purchases.
- Charge both systems or keep them connected to power.
- Back up or otherwise verify any saves that have a separate migration process.
- Read the on-screen deletion warning for your chosen transfer method.
General transfer sequence
- On the new Switch 2, begin the system-transfer process during setup or from the system settings area specified by Nintendo’s current guide.
- On the original Switch, select the matching transfer option and follow the pairing instructions shown on both screens.
- Choose the account and data categories offered by the transfer wizard.
- Keep both consoles online and powered until the process reports completion.
- On Switch 2, allow digital software to download and test the games and saves that matter to you.
The source console’s data treatment depends on the transfer method and data type. Some data can be removed from the original console when a transfer completes, so read the warning before confirming. If you intend to keep both consoles active, distinguish a full system transfer from continuing to access digital games through Nintendo’s virtual game card or online-license options; those arrangements have their own current rules.
Do my old Joy-Con work on Switch 2?
Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the Switch 2 console or charge from it. To recharge them, use an original Switch console or a compatible Joy-Con charging accessory. A game that requires Joy-Con 2-specific capabilities may not provide the same experience with the older controllers.

Does the original Switch Pro Controller work?
The original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 and can charge from the Switch 2 dock through USB. Its legacy feature set is not identical to a Switch 2 controller: for example, Nintendo identifies limitations such as being unable to wake Switch 2 from sleep with the controller’s HOME button. Games that require newer controller functions may therefore need a different controller.
| Accessory | Supported behavior | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Original Joy-Con | Wireless pairing is supported. | Cannot physically attach to Switch 2 or charge from the console; Joy-Con 2-dependent features may be unavailable. |
| Original Switch Pro Controller | Wireless play and charging through the Switch 2 dock’s USB connection. | Some system functions, including waking Switch 2 with HOME, are unavailable. |
Before relying on a legacy controller, check the game’s control requirements. “Pairs successfully” does not mean every motion, button or system function is supported.
Can I use my old microSD card in Switch 2?
Not for storing Switch 2 games. Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards for game-storage expansion. A conventional microSD card from an original Switch is not a substitute for that format. Nintendo says a conventional card can still be used to view screenshots and videos captured on the original Switch, but it cannot hold Switch 2 game data. Nintendo’s accessory guidance is available from Nintendo UK’s compatibility page.

When buying storage, look specifically for a microSD Express card and confirm the capacity and device compatibility in the listing. Do not assume that a high-capacity card is suitable merely because it fits the slot physically. Keep the original card if it contains captures you want to view, and plan a separate Express card for Switch 2 game storage.
What happens to my Nintendo Account and Nintendo Switch Online membership?
A Nintendo Account linked to Switch 2 provides access to the eShop and eligible digital purchases. Your existing Nintendo Switch Online membership can be used on Switch 2 when the subscribed account is linked, but Nintendo distinguishes ordinary membership benefits from features that are specific to Switch 2. Library access, cloud functions, virtual game cards and sharing scenarios can have separate conditions, so check Nintendo’s current Switch 2 FAQ before changing the console designated for your account.
Being signed in does not make an incompatible game work, and a successful sign-in does not prove that a save has transferred. Treat account access, software compatibility and save migration as three separate checks.

The game will not start
- Confirm that the card is inserted correctly or that the digital purchase belongs to the linked account.
- Install available system and game updates.
- Check Nintendo’s startup-issue list for the exact title.
- If it is a third-party game and Nintendo has no detailed note, check the publisher’s support page.
The game starts but a feature is broken
- Compare the symptom with Nintendo’s in-game-issue list.
- Install the latest patch and restart the console.
- Check whether the affected mode requires Joy-Con 2 or another newer feature.
- Look for a Switch 2 Edition or publisher-specific compatibility update.
My save is missing
- Verify that the correct Nintendo Account is linked.
- Check whether the game uses a shared-save or special migration process.
- Do not repeat a system transfer blindly; review Nintendo’s transfer instructions and the game’s own procedure first.
- If the source console was wiped by the selected transfer method, recovery depends on the game’s supported backup or cloud process.
My old controller connects but does not perform correctly
Re-pair it wirelessly, test it in a game that does not require newer functions, and check whether the missing action is one of the documented legacy-controller limitations. Use a compatible newer controller when the game depends on Joy-Con 2-specific hardware.
The storage card is rejected
Move Switch 2 game storage to a microSD Express card. A conventional Switch microSD card may remain useful for viewing original screenshots and videos, but changing its formatting will not turn it into Switch 2 game storage.
Upgrade checklist
- Check every essential game on Nintendo’s current startup and in-game compatibility lists.
- Decide whether you are transferring the whole system or keeping both consoles and using Nintendo’s digital-access options.
- Identify games with special save-migration rules before beginning a transfer.
- Plan charging for original Joy-Con and test any legacy controller-dependent games.
- Buy microSD Express storage if you need more room for Switch 2 games.
- Keep both consoles powered and online during transfer, and read all deletion warnings.
The practical answer is therefore “mostly, with title-by-title and accessory checks.” Switch 2 preserves access to a large part of the Switch library, but game launch, complete functionality, save transfer, controller support and storage format each have different rules.
