Yes—Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible Nintendo Switch games in both physical and digital formats, but compatibility is not universal. Insert a compatible Switch game card, or link the Nintendo Account that owns a digital game and download it. Before buying a game or assuming an existing title will work, search that exact title in Nintendo’s current Switch 2 compatibility checker. Some games do not work, some have partial functionality, and others require original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con or a legacy accessory.
What backward compatibility means on Nintendo Switch 2
Nintendo Switch 2 supports a large portion of the original Nintendo Switch library, but it is not a guarantee that every Switch game, mode, controller feature, or accessory will transfer unchanged. Nintendo describes support in terms of compatible physical and digital Switch games. Hardware differences between the two consoles mean that a title can be playable while a particular mode or peripheral-dependent feature is limited.

Compatibility is therefore best understood at the title-and-feature level. A game may launch normally, work only after an update, require an original Switch controller, or have a mode that is unavailable. Nintendo’s live checker is the authoritative place to verify the current status of a specific game.

Do physical Switch game cards work?
Yes, a physical Nintendo Switch game card can be inserted into Nintendo Switch 2. The card remains the game license and the console reads it as it did on the original Switch. That does not override a title’s compatibility status: Nintendo warns that some physical games may not be supported or may have partial functionality.

- Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs

Check the exact edition before relying on a card. Regional releases, bundled accessories, download requirements, and game updates can affect what you can do after inserting it. If the checker identifies a controller or accessory requirement, plan for that requirement even though the card itself is accepted.
Do digital Switch games transfer?
Digital games that you already own on Nintendo Switch can be downloaded and played on Switch 2 after you link the Nintendo Account associated with those purchases. The account link establishes access to the digital entitlement; you then download the title from the Switch 2 software library.
Digital ownership does not remove compatibility limits. A game can be owned, downloadable, and still have a restricted mode or an accessory requirement. The official guidance establishes game access and compatibility conditions, not a blanket promise that every save file, peripheral, or game mode transfers unchanged. Verify those details for any title that matters to you.

Use Nintendo’s official Switch 2 compatibility checker rather than relying on a general list or an assumption based on the game’s age. The checker is a live title lookup and can change as Nintendo and publishers test games and release updates.

- Open Nintendo’s current Switch 2 compatibility page and locate the title search field.
- Search for the exact game name. Include the edition or subtitle when several releases share a name.
- Read the result for the whole game, not just whether the software launches. Look for notes about partial functionality, required controllers, accessories, updates, or modes that differ.
- For a physical purchase, compare the result with the game card’s region and any required download or accessory.
- For a digital game, make sure the Nintendo Account linked to Switch 2 owns the title before attempting the download.
- Check again close to purchase or play. Nintendo says future testing and software updates may increase the supported catalog, so an earlier result may not be the latest one.
Nintendo does not publish a permanent compatibility percentage. The absence of a title from a page or search result is not proof that it works, so treat the specific checker result as the relevant evidence. If a third-party game leaves a question unanswered, Nintendo Support advises contacting that game’s publisher for title-specific information.
Games that need original Switch Joy-Con or accessories
The biggest practical exceptions involve features built around the original Joy-Con shape, the right Joy-Con’s infrared (IR) Motion Camera, or a Toy-Con accessory. Joy-Con 2 are not interchangeable for every function. The following examples are identified by Nintendo’s compatibility information:
| Game | What is required | What changes on Switch 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Ring Fit Adventure | Original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con attached to the Ring-Con | Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Ring-Con, so the original controller is needed for the Ring-Con exercise setup. |
| Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 02: Robot Kit | Original Switch Joy-Con | Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Robot accessory. |
| 1-2-Switch | Original Switch right Joy-Con connected wirelessly | Modes that use the right Joy-Con’s IR Motion Camera require the original controller. |
| Game Builder Garage | Original Switch right Joy-Con | Specified IR-camera Nodons in Free Programming mode need the original right Joy-Con. |
| Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training for Nintendo Switch | Original Switch right Joy-Con | Finger Calculations, Finger Drills, and Rock, Paper, Scissors Test use the original right Joy-Con’s required feature. |
| Nintendo Switch Sports | Original Switch Joy-Con in the Leg Strap | Joy-Con 2 do not fit the Leg Strap, so Football Shoot-Out requires an original Joy-Con. |
| WarioWare: Move It! | Original Switch right Joy-Con | Microgames that use the IR Motion Camera need the original right Joy-Con. |
| Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 01: Variety Kit | Original Switch Joy-Con | The Switch 2 console does not fit all Toy-Con pieces or the Toy-Con screen stand, so the experience differs. |
| Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 03: Vehicle Kit | Original Switch Joy-Con | The Switch 2 console does not fit all Toy-Con pieces or the Toy-Con screen stand, changing the experience. |
| Everybody 1-2-Switch! | Joy-Con 2 can run the game, but with a controller-feel difference | Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 force-feedback vibration is reduced compared with original Joy-Con, which can make the Joy-Con Hide & Seek minigame harder. |
This table is a set of Nintendo-documented examples, not an exhaustive promise that no other title has a special requirement. Search the current checker for any motion-control, camera, fitness, or Toy-Con game before you buy or set it up.

Can original Joy-Con be used with Switch 2?
Original Switch Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2. They cannot attach to the Switch 2 console, however, and the console cannot charge them while they are being used wirelessly.

If you need original Joy-Con for one of the games above, charge them with an original Nintendo Switch console or with an accessory designed for that purpose, such as a Joy-Con charging grip or a two-way charging stand. This is separate from game compatibility: pairing may work while charging remains a separate hardware requirement.
What “partial functionality” can mean
Nintendo’s compatibility notes distinguish between a title being playable and every part of it behaving as it did on the original system. Partial functionality can include a specific minigame that needs the IR Motion Camera, a controller that cannot fit a legacy accessory, a screen stand that does not accommodate the new console, or feedback that feels different.
Read the checker’s notes for the exact title and mode. Do not infer that a game is fully equivalent merely because its icon appears in your library or its card starts successfully. If a feature is central to the reason you own the game, treat that feature’s requirement as the deciding factor.
Updates, upgrades, and title-specific changes
Some Switch games receive free updates or paid upgrades that add content or improve performance on Switch 2. Whether an update exists, what it changes, and whether it costs anything are title-specific. Nintendo’s compatibility information confirms that these options exist but does not establish one universal upgrade policy.

Install the latest system and game updates when the checker or publisher identifies them as necessary. An update can improve support, but it does not eliminate a physical limitation such as a Joy-Con that cannot attach to a legacy accessory.
A practical decision framework before buying or moving a game
| Question | Why it matters | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Is the game physical or digital? | The access method differs even though both formats can be supported. | For a card, confirm the exact release; for digital ownership, confirm the Nintendo Account that owns it. |
| What is the current Nintendo status? | Support can change as testing and updates continue. | Search the live compatibility checker immediately before purchase or use. |
| Does the entire game work? | A launchable title can still have a restricted mode. | Read notes for individual modes, minigames, cameras, and motion features. |
| Is original hardware required? | Joy-Con 2 may not fit a legacy accessory or provide the same sensor. | Keep original Joy-Con available and plan how to charge them. |
| Is there a Switch 2 update or upgrade? | Performance and additional content can be handled differently by each title. | Check the publisher or Nintendo listing for the specific update or upgrade terms. |
Nintendo’s current qualification
Nintendo’s official compatibility wording is deliberately cautious: While future testing and updates may increase the number of supported titles, some games may take longer to become playable, may experience partial functionality issues, or may not be supported.
That statement is why a dated, universal claim such as “every Switch game works” or a made-up compatibility percentage is unreliable.
For a purchase decision, the most dependable sequence is simple: identify the exact game, check its current Nintendo status, read any controller or accessory note, and confirm that your physical card or Nintendo Account matches the title you intend to use.
