Most Switch 2 owners do not need every accessory. Start with a microSD Express card if you expect to download games, a carrying case with a screen protector if you travel, and a Switch 2 Pro Controller if you prefer a conventional gamepad. Add the Switch 2 Camera only for video chat or camera-enabled games. A second dock, spare AC adapter, or extra Joy-Con 2 controllers solve specific setup or multiplayer needs rather than being automatic launch purchases.
Nintendo’s official catalog confirms the accessory types and compatibility covered here, but it does not establish launch-day prices, stock, or which products were available on a particular launch date. Check the current listing before ordering.
Which Nintendo Switch 2 accessories are worth buying first?
Use your playing situation, not the length of Nintendo’s accessory catalog, to decide. The console already includes Joy-Con 2 controllers and Joy-Con 2 straps, so buying another pair immediately is unnecessary unless you need more players or a different control arrangement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Your need | Accessory to consider | Why it matters | Skip or postpone when |
|---|---|---|---|
| More installed-game storage | microSD Express card | Switch 2 game storage expansion requires the Express standard, with support up to 2 TB. | You mainly use physical game cards and have ample internal space. |
| Portable protection | Carrying Case & Screen Protector | Protects the console during travel and includes a protector for the display. | The console stays docked or you already have a case made specifically for Switch 2. |
| Carry the entire TV setup | All-In-One Carrying Case | Designed for the console, dock, controllers, cables, and up to six game cards. | You only need to carry the handheld and a few cartridges. |
| Traditional gamepad controls | Switch 2 Pro Controller | Adds a full-size layout and features such as HD rumble 2, motion controls, amiibo support, and mappable GL/GR buttons. | You are comfortable with Joy-Con 2 and do not need another controller. |
| Video chat or camera-aware games | Switch 2 Camera or compatible USB-C webcam | Provides the camera input Nintendo describes for GameChat video and games that use a camera. | You will not use GameChat video or camera features. |
| Another television location | Replacement/second Switch 2 Dock Set | Provides a complete additional dock setup with its own power and HDMI accessories. | You have only one TV setup and the included dock works normally. |
| Spare charging equipment | Switch 2 AC Adapter | Acts as a replacement for the adapter supplied with the console and can connect to the console or dock. | Your included adapter is present and undamaged. |
These are use-case recommendations, not a universal value ranking. Nintendo’s pages describe features and compatibility, but they do not provide independent durability tests, customer satisfaction data, or a price comparison that would justify calling one accessory the best deal for everyone.

What comes with the console, and what is optional?
Switch 2 includes Joy-Con 2 controllers and straps. That covers handheld play and basic multiplayer without an immediate controller purchase. Treat additional Joy-Con 2 controllers, a charging grip, and extra straps as optional equipment for a specific need such as four-player play, a spare pair, or a preferred tabletop arrangement.
This distinction prevents a common launch mistake: buying accessories that duplicate items already in the box while overlooking the one item that solves your actual problem. Make a list of your first playing locations, how many people will play simultaneously, and whether you download games before spending on extras.

Storage: buy microSD Express, not a conventional microSD card
The required card standard
Nintendo Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards only for expanding game storage. Nintendo’s specifications state a maximum supported capacity of up to 2 TB; the specifications page does not state a publication year for that figure. A conventional microSD card cannot expand Switch 2 game storage.
Nintendo’s accessory catalog lists a 256GB Samsung microSD Express card, but that listing does not make 256GB the only supported capacity. Choose capacity according to your download habits and budget while staying within the stated 2TB ceiling. Confirm that the product description explicitly says “microSD Express,” rather than relying on a familiar microSD logo or a card that worked in the original Switch.
When a card is actually useful
- Buy one early if you expect to download several large games, keep digital purchases installed, or want room for updates and downloadable content.
- Postpone it if you mostly use physical game cards and the console’s internal storage is sufficient for your current library.
- Do not buy an ordinary microSD card as a cheaper substitute; it will not provide Switch 2 game-storage expansion.
What an original Switch card can still do
Nintendo says a conventional microSD card from the original Switch can be used to copy screenshots and videos from the original system. That is a transfer function, not game-storage expansion for Switch 2. Keep this distinction in mind when moving media: a card can remain useful for files without being suitable for installing Switch 2 games.
Storage buying checklist
- Look for the words microSD Express in the exact product specification.
- Check the capacity against Nintendo’s stated limit of up to 2 TB.
- Keep the purchase record and packaging until the card has been recognized and formatted by the console.
- Copy important screenshots and videos elsewhere before changing cards; storage expansion is not a substitute for a separate backup.
The technical limit is documented in Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 Tech Specs.

Cases and screen protection: choose by what you carry
Carrying Case & Screen Protector
The standard Carrying Case & Screen Protector is the practical choice for a console that travels between home, work, school, or a friend’s house. Its purpose is portable protection, and the bundled screen protector addresses the display’s most exposed surface. Select this format when you normally carry the console, a few accessories, and perhaps game cards rather than an entire docked setup.
Apply the protector in a clean, dust-free area and follow the supplied alignment instructions. A case does not remove the need to keep grit away from the screen or to check that the console is seated without pressure before closing it.
All-In-One Carrying Case
The All-In-One Carrying Case is for a different job: transporting the console, dock, controllers, cables, and up to six game cards together. It is useful when the console regularly moves between complete TV setups or when you want one organized kit for travel. Its larger capacity is unnecessary bulk if you only use Switch 2 in handheld mode.
Case decision
| Question | Choose |
|---|---|
| Do you carry only the handheld and small essentials? | Carrying Case & Screen Protector |
| Do you carry the dock, power, HDMI cable, controllers, and game cards? | All-In-One Carrying Case |
| Will the console stay in one place? | Delay a case until travel becomes part of your routine. |
Controllers: Pro Controller, extra Joy-Con 2, and older pads
Who should consider the Switch 2 Pro Controller?
The Switch 2 Pro Controller is an optional full-size controller for players who prefer conventional grips and analog-stick spacing, or who want a dedicated pad for docked sessions. Nintendo lists these features:
- HD rumble 2
- Motion controls
- Built-in amiibo functionality
- A Capture Button
- A C Button for GameChat
- Mappable GL and GR buttons
- An audio jack
Those features matter only if they match your play style. The mappable rear buttons can help players who use extra inputs, while the audio jack may simplify headset use in supported play. If Joy-Con 2 already feels comfortable and you rarely play docked, the Pro Controller is a preference purchase rather than a requirement.
When additional Joy-Con 2 controllers make sense
Buy extra Joy-Con 2 controllers for a real multiplayer requirement, a spare pair, or a particular tabletop setup. The console’s included pair is enough for the basic out-of-box experience. Nintendo also lists a Joy-Con 2 charging grip and Joy-Con 2 strap; Nintendo states that these new accessories are for Switch 2 and cannot be used with original Switch Joy-Con.
Can original Switch controllers be reused?
Yes, but with important limits. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to the console and cannot be charged by it. You need another charging method for those controllers, and they lose the convenience of physically mounting them to the system.
Rank #3
- HD Rumble 2
- Motion controls
- Built-in amiibo functionality*
- Capture Button
- C Button for GameChat**
The original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2 and can charge through the Switch 2 dock by USB. This can be a sensible way to add a second conventional controller if you already own one, subject to the games and features you intend to use. It does not provide the Switch 2 Pro Controller’s listed C Button, GL/GR buttons, or other new features.
Read Nintendo’s model-by-model guidance before mixing generations: Compatibility of Nintendo Switch accessories with Nintendo Switch 2.
Camera: a specialized purchase for GameChat and compatible games
The Switch 2 Camera is a dedicated USB-C camera Nintendo describes for video chat and in-game camera features. It is worth considering if you plan to use GameChat video or play software that responds to a camera feed. It is not a general requirement for using the console, and buying it without a clear camera use case adds equipment you may rarely connect.
Nintendo’s accessory information also identifies a compatible USB-C webcam as an option for GameChat video chat. That gives you a choice between the dedicated Switch 2 Camera and a compatible webcam, but compatibility should be checked against Nintendo’s current requirements before purchase. A webcam that works with another device is not automatically guaranteed to work with Switch 2.
Camera decision checklist
- Identify the games or communication features you will use.
- Confirm that the camera connects through USB-C as required.
- Check the current Nintendo compatibility information for any third-party webcam.
- Plan where the camera will sit in handheld, tabletop, and docked modes.
Second dock and replacement power: solve a location problem
Replacement/second Switch 2 Dock Set
Nintendo sells a Switch 2 Dock Set that includes a dock, AC adapter, USB-C charging cable, and Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable. Because one dock is already included with the system, this set is intended for a second television location or as a replacement if the original dock is damaged or misplaced.

It is not a performance upgrade by itself; it duplicates the docked connection at another location.
Switch 2 AC Adapter
The listed Switch 2 AC Adapter is described as a replacement for the adapter supplied with the console. Nintendo says it can connect to the console or the dock, making it appropriate as a lost, damaged, or dedicated-travel replacement. If your included adapter is working and you do not need a separate charging location, this is a reserve item rather than a launch priority.
Rank #4
- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Do not substitute the original Switch dock or AC adapter
Nintendo identifies the original Switch dock and the High Speed HDMI cable supplied with the original Switch as incompatible with Switch 2. The old AC adapter can charge the console, but it does not provide the output required for TV mode. This is why a seemingly complete old dock setup cannot simply be moved over for television play.
Original Switch accessory compatibility at a glance
| Original accessory | Switch 2 result | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Original Joy-Con | Wireless pairing works; physical attachment and charging from Switch 2 do not. | Use another charging method and do not expect them to slide onto the console. |
| Original Pro Controller | Wireless pairing works; USB charging through the Switch 2 dock works. | Existing owners can use it as an additional controller. |
| Original Switch dock | Incompatible. | Use the Switch 2 dock for TV mode. |
| Original Switch High Speed HDMI cable | Incompatible according to Nintendo’s support guidance. | Use the cable supplied with the Switch 2 dock setup. |
| Original Switch AC adapter | Can charge the console but lacks output for TV mode. | Do not rely on it as the dock’s TV-mode power source. |
| Original conventional microSD card | Can copy original Switch screenshots and videos; cannot expand Switch 2 game storage. | Buy microSD Express for installed Switch 2 games. |
Accessory plans for common Switch 2 owners
Mostly handheld player
Start with the Carrying Case & Screen Protector if the console leaves home. Add a microSD Express card only when download storage becomes a constraint. The included Joy-Con 2 pair is sufficient unless you want a different grip or additional players.
Digital-game-heavy player
Make a microSD Express card the first optional purchase. Select capacity based on your expected installed library and stay within Nintendo’s 2TB maximum. A conventional card from an older system will not solve this requirement.
Docked player who prefers a traditional pad
Consider the Switch 2 Pro Controller for its full-size layout and listed controls. If you already own the original Pro Controller, test its wireless pairing and dock charging before buying another controller; purchase the new model when its additional features are important to you.
Family or local multiplayer household
Use the included Joy-Con 2 controllers first, then add controllers only for the number of simultaneous players and games you actually expect. Extra Joy-Con 2 units are a need-based expansion, not a required launch bundle.
Frequent traveler with a complete setup
Choose the All-In-One Carrying Case when you regularly transport the dock, power, HDMI cable, controllers, and game cards. The smaller case is a better fit when you carry only the console.

GameChat or camera-feature user
Choose the Switch 2 Camera or verify a compatible USB-C webcam for GameChat video. Do not buy a camera solely because it appears in the accessory catalog; the feature or game that uses it should be part of your plan.
Launch buying checklist
- Inventory the box: confirm that you already have Joy-Con 2 controllers and straps before ordering replacements.
- Choose your first location: handheld travel, one docked TV, or multiple TV rooms determines whether a case or second dock has value.
- Audit storage: estimate your digital-game use and select microSD Express only if additional space is needed.
- Decide on controls: keep the included Joy-Con 2, reuse an original Pro Controller where appropriate, or buy the Switch 2 Pro Controller for its newer feature set.
- Confirm camera use: identify a GameChat or camera-enabled feature before purchasing a camera or webcam.
- Check generation compatibility: do not assume an original dock, HDMI cable, AC adapter, Joy-Con charging solution, or microSD card transfers directly to Switch 2.
- Verify the current listing: Nintendo’s catalog and support pages provide the authoritative model and compatibility information; availability and prices can change by region and date.
Common launch mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying a regular microSD card
Symptom: the card is a conventional microSD model that worked in the original Switch but does not provide Switch 2 game expansion. Fix: return to the product specification and select a card explicitly labeled microSD Express.
Assuming every old dock accessory carries over
Symptom: an original dock or its bundled HDMI cable is used as a Switch 2 TV setup. Fix: use the Switch 2 dock and the cable supplied for that setup; Nintendo lists the original dock and High Speed HDMI cable as incompatible.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Expecting old Joy-Con to charge on Switch 2
Symptom: original Joy-Con pair wirelessly but cannot be charged while attached because they cannot attach to the new console. Fix: retain a separate charging method or use Joy-Con 2 accessories designed for Switch 2.
Buying the camera without a use case
Symptom: the camera remains disconnected because no planned game or video-chat feature needs it. Fix: defer the purchase until you have identified the GameChat or camera-enabled feature you intend to use.
Buying a second dock for a one-TV setup
Symptom: the extra dock duplicates equipment that already works. Fix: reserve the Dock Set for a second location or replacement need.
Verdict
For most buyers, the sensible launch order is: protect the console if it travels, add microSD Express storage only when downloads justify it, and choose the Switch 2 Pro Controller only if you want its full-size design or specific features. The Switch 2 Camera, extra Joy-Con 2 controllers, second Dock Set, and spare AC adapter are specialized purchases. Existing Switch owners can reuse an original Pro Controller and pair original Joy-Con wirelessly, but the dock, TV-mode power arrangement, physical Joy-Con attachment, and game-storage card requirements have meaningful limits. Match each purchase to a concrete use rather than treating the complete catalog as a mandatory bundle.
