For most US buyers starting fresh, Nintendo Switch 2 is the better long-term purchase. It has a larger, sharper handheld screen, substantially faster hardware, more storage, newer Switch 2-only games, and features such as HDR, variable refresh rate and 120-fps support in compatible software. Choose an original Nintendo Switch family model instead when its lower listed price, the OLED model’s screen, or a specific game that already runs well matters more than new hardware.

“Switch 1” is a convenient shorthand for the original family: standard Switch, Switch OLED and Switch Lite. Nintendo officially calls that family Nintendo Switch. This comparison uses Nintendo’s US information and US-dollar prices available on October 13, 2026; prices, stock, bundles and compatibility can change, and buyers elsewhere should check their regional Nintendo store.

The short answer: buy Switch 2 unless a specific original-model advantage wins

Switch 2 is the forward-looking choice for a new buyer who wants Nintendo’s newest releases, faster loading, better image quality and room for a larger digital library. Its 7.9-inch 1080p handheld display is larger and higher-resolution than every original model’s screen, and its hardware can output up to 4K at up to 60 frames per second in supported games. Compatible software can also use HDR, variable refresh rate and frame rates up to 120 fps.

Those figures are capability limits, not promises that every game reaches them. Nintendo says results vary by software, display and mode. The original Switch family remains sensible for a lower-cost entry point, for buyers who specifically prefer the OLED model’s panel, and for people whose must-play games are already available and do not need Switch 2 enhancements.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

Before buying either generation, make a list of the games you actually intend to play. Check each title’s Switch 2 compatibility, whether it has a free update, and whether a paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade is offered. Nintendo warns that some original Switch games may not run or may have compatibility issues on Switch 2.

What “Switch 1” includes

The original generation is not one identical console. Your choice is among three models with different screens, prices and play modes:

  • Standard Nintendo Switch: a 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen with TV, tabletop and handheld modes.
  • Nintendo Switch OLED: a 7-inch OLED touchscreen with the same three modes and compatibility with the full Switch game library, subject to Nintendo’s stated game-specific caveats.
  • Nintendo Switch Lite: a smaller system dedicated to handheld play. It does not connect to a TV by itself.

The standard and OLED models use detachable Joy-Con controllers. Switch Lite has integrated controls; separate compatible controllers can be used for games that do not support handheld mode, but you must check each game’s play-mode icon or packaging.

US prices and bundle value

Nintendo’s US family page lists these original-generation prices. They are manufacturer listings, not live retailer quotes, and Nintendo can change prices, colors, availability and listings.

Console Listed US price Screen Play modes Best fit
Switch Lite $229.99 Compact LCD; size not stated in the cited material Handheld only Lowest-cost, portable-only play
Standard Switch $339.99 6.2-inch LCD TV, tabletop and handheld Full flexibility at the lower full-size price
Switch OLED $399.99 7-inch OLED TV, tabletop and handheld Original-generation buyers who prioritize the built-in screen
Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle $549.99 MSRP 7.9-inch 1080p LCD TV, tabletop and handheld New buyers who want Switch 2 hardware and the included game

The cited official material does not state a standalone US MSRP for Switch 2, so do not infer one from the bundle. Nintendo’s August 25, 2026 announcement says the $549.99 Mario Kart World bundle contains the console, a full Mario Kart World download and a 90-day individual Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo describes that package as a $37.98 saving against its suggested individual prices; that is Nintendo’s comparison, not an independent market calculation.

Nintendo also announced a Switch 2 plus Nintendo Switch Sports Resort bundle for $529.99, scheduled for October 22, 2026. On October 13, 2026, that availability date is still in the future. Confirm that a bundle is actually offered, and verify its exact software and membership terms, before treating it as a current option.

How to compare the real cost

Compare what you would otherwise buy, not just the number printed on the box:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Console price in your region and the game or games you will purchase immediately.
  • Whether you need Nintendo Switch Online and, if so, whether a bundle’s 90-day individual membership is useful to you.
  • Storage for downloaded games and the price of the required expansion format.
  • Extra controllers, especially if your chosen game needs Joy-Con 2 features.
  • Any paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade for an original Switch game you already own.

Hardware: what Switch 2 changes

Handheld screen

Switch 2 has a 7.9-inch LCD with 1080p resolution. That is a larger image and a higher pixel count than the standard Switch’s 6.2-inch LCD and the Switch OLED’s 7-inch OLED panel. The OLED model can still look more contrast-rich because of its display technology, while Switch 2 emphasizes size, resolution and newer display features. Decide whether you value OLED contrast or Switch 2’s larger 1080p canvas more; neither specification makes every game look identical.

Nintendo says Switch 2 supports HDR when the game and display support it. HDR is therefore a software-and-screen-dependent feature, not a guarantee for the whole library.

TV output, VRR and frame rates

In TV mode, Switch 2 can output up to 4K in supported games. At 4K, output is capped at a maximum of 60 frames per second. Compatible games and displays can also use variable refresh rate, and compatible modes can reach up to 120 fps. Nintendo notes that TV-mode VRR support arrived in a system update on September 10, 2026.

These are ceilings. A game may render at a lower resolution or frame rate, omit HDR, or use none of the available VRR capability. Check the individual game’s specifications and update notes rather than assuming that the console’s maximum becomes the game’s default.

Processing, graphics and loading

Nintendo describes Switch 2 as having greater processing and graphics performance, smoother frame rates, sharper visuals and faster loading than the original hardware. Select original Switch games may benefit automatically from the newer capabilities. Other titles receive a dedicated Switch 2 Edition with improvements such as image-quality changes, smoother performance or additional features. The exact benefit is game-specific; there is no universal enhancement level for the entire back catalog.

Storage

Switch 2 includes 256 GB of internal storage, which Nintendo describes as eight times the capacity of Nintendo Switch. Some of that space is reserved for system use, so the amount available for games is lower than the headline figure.

Game-storage expansion on Switch 2 requires a microSD Express card. Nintendo says the console is designed exclusively for microSD Express for game data because the format enables faster data transfer than conventional microSD. Older standard microSD cards cannot expand Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo says they can still be used to view captured screenshots and videos, so do not discard an old card if you need access to media, but it will not solve your downloaded-game capacity problem.

Game compatibility: the decision you must make title by title

Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Nintendo Account features, the eShop, virtual game cards and Nintendo Switch Online can be used on the new console. Compatibility is broad but not universal: Nintendo’s own warning says, “Some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.”

Use this process for every must-play title:

  1. Identify whether you own a physical cartridge or a digital license.
  2. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility information for that exact game and edition.
  3. Look for a free Switch 2 update, a paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade, or a notice that no enhancement is available.
  4. Check for hardware requirements. A game that needs mouse controls or another Joy-Con 2-specific feature may not work with your original controllers.
  5. Recheck immediately before purchase. Nintendo says compatibility testing and fixes may continue, so an earlier status can change.

Original Switch OLED is compatible with the full Switch game library, with Nintendo noting caveats for some Labo design parameters and possible differences caused by the larger screen. Switch Lite runs titles that support handheld mode. If a game does not support handheld play, you may need separate compatible controllers, and Switch Lite still cannot provide TV mode.

Moving games, saves and accounts from Switch to Switch 2

Nintendo’s system-transfer process can move digital games, certain save data, settings and linked accounts. It requires internet access and at least one user profile linked to a Nintendo Account on the original console. Digital games are redownloaded after transfer rather than copied as playable files in place.

  1. Keep the original Switch available and connected to the internet.
  2. Confirm that at least one original-console user profile is linked to a Nintendo Account.
  3. Follow Nintendo’s system-transfer instructions on both consoles and keep them powered during the process.
  4. Allow digital purchases to redownload on Switch 2, then install any available game updates.
  5. Open your most important games and verify that their saves and downloadable content are present.

“Certain save data” is deliberately narrower than “every save.” Check the transfer support information for games with unusual save systems, local multiplayer data or accessory dependencies. Keep the original console until you have verified the games you care about.

Controllers, docks and accessories

Original Joy-Con and Pro Controllers can pair wirelessly with Switch 2. Original Joy-Con cannot attach physically to the new console, however, and they need an original Switch console or a compatible charging accessory to recharge. The original Switch dock is not compatible with Switch 2.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wireless pairing does not make every controller feature equivalent. Games that require Joy-Con 2-specific capabilities, such as mouse controls, may not work correctly with older Joy-Con. If local multiplayer is part of your plan, budget for the controllers required by the particular Switch 2 game instead of assuming that an existing set covers every mode.

Who should buy each console?

Buy Switch 2 if you are starting a new library

Switch 2 is the strongest default when you have no existing hardware, want Nintendo’s upcoming software, or expect to download many games. You get the newest processor and graphics capabilities, 256 GB internal storage, the largest handheld display in this comparison, and access to Switch 2-only software such as Mario Kart World. It also gives you the best chance of receiving future performance and feature updates designed for the current platform.

Keep or buy a standard Switch for the lower listed price

The standard Switch is the value choice among full-size original models at Nintendo’s listed $339.99. It still provides TV, tabletop and handheld play and accesses the established Switch catalog. Choose it when the games you want are already supported, you do not need Switch 2-only releases, and the price difference is more important than faster loading, newer graphics features and expanded storage.

Choose Switch OLED for the original generation’s best built-in screen

Switch OLED costs $399.99 on Nintendo’s cited US family page and has a 7-inch OLED touchscreen. It retains TV, tabletop and handheld modes and works with the Switch library. It is the most compelling original model for handheld players who prefer OLED presentation and do not need Switch 2-exclusive software. It does not gain Switch 2’s newer processing, 4K output, 256 GB internal storage or microSD Express game expansion.

Choose Switch Lite for dedicated handheld use

At Nintendo’s listed $229.99, Switch Lite is the least expensive entry point. Its lower price comes with a firm limitation: handheld-only operation. It suits a player who rarely or never uses a television and whose games support handheld mode. Factor in the cost and inconvenience of separate controllers if you plan to play titles that require detached controls.

When upgrading from an existing Switch makes sense

An upgrade is easiest to justify when at least one of these is true:

  • You want a Switch 2-only game or a major Switch 2 Edition improvement.
  • Your current console’s loading times, frame rates or image quality regularly bother you.
  • You play handheld and want the larger 7.9-inch 1080p display.
  • You download enough games that 256 GB internal storage and faster expansion are valuable.
  • You want HDR, VRR or high-frame-rate modes in games that support them.

Stay with your current Switch when your library is already satisfying, your must-play games have no meaningful Switch 2 benefit, or buying a new console would force you to replace controllers and storage you do not need to replace. Compatibility should be your first check, not an assumption made after purchase.

A practical buying checklist

  1. List your next five games. Mark each as original Switch, Switch 2, compatible original software, or requiring a Switch 2 Edition.
  2. Select your play mode. If you need TV play, eliminate Switch Lite. If handheld display quality is the priority, compare Switch OLED with Switch 2 directly.
  3. Calculate storage. Switch 2 downloads require microSD Express for expansion; an old conventional microSD card is not a game-storage solution.
  4. Audit controllers. Existing Joy-Con and Pro Controllers can pair wirelessly, but original Joy-Con cannot attach to Switch 2 and may lack features required by some games.
  5. Price the complete setup. Include the console, first games, storage, controllers and any Nintendo Switch Online membership you would actually use.
  6. Verify the offer’s date and contents. This matters especially for bundles and for the October 22, 2026 Sports Resort bundle announcement.

Common mistakes to avoid

Assuming every Switch game works perfectly

Most of the library carries forward, but Nintendo explicitly leaves room for unsupported or partially compatible titles. Check individual games, including accessories and special modes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Treating 4K or 120 fps as universal performance

Switch 2 supports those output capabilities only in compatible games and modes. At 4K, the stated maximum is 60 fps. Your television must also support the relevant HDR or VRR feature.

Reusing a standard microSD card for Switch 2 games

Conventional Switch microSD cards cannot expand Switch 2 game storage. Buy the required microSD Express format for downloaded games; conventional cards remain useful for viewing captured media.

Expecting old Joy-Con to attach or provide every new feature

Original Joy-Con pair wirelessly but cannot physically attach to Switch 2. A game that relies on Joy-Con 2-specific functions may require newer controllers.

Comparing a bundle with an incomplete standalone purchase

Include the bundle’s game and 90-day individual Nintendo Switch Online membership only if you would otherwise buy or use them. Nintendo’s claimed $37.98 saving is tied to its suggested individual prices and should not be treated as a guaranteed retailer discount.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

Buy Switch 2 if you want the current Nintendo platform, larger 1080p handheld play, faster hardware, newer exclusives and more internal storage. Buy the standard Switch when the lower $339.99 listed price and full three-mode experience matter most. Buy Switch OLED when handheld screen quality is your priority within the original family, and choose Switch Lite only when handheld-only use is a deliberate choice.

For an upgrade, the deciding evidence is your own game list. Confirm compatibility, updates, controller requirements and storage before paying. That check tells you whether Switch 2’s advantages solve a problem you actually have or whether an original Switch model remains the better value.
