In the United States, a physical product bought directly from the Nintendo Store can generally be returned or exchanged within 30 days after it is delivered. The item normally must be unopened, in its original condition, and complete with its tags, components and packaging. That return rule is separate from Nintendo’s warranty: in the U.S. and Canada, covered systems, including Nintendo Switch 2, have a 12-month limited warranty for the original purchaser, while Nintendo’s order-support summary lists three months for individually sold games and accessories.
Region, seller, product type and the reason for sending an item back all change the answer. The steps below separate a change-of-mind return from a defect claim and explain the important U.S./Canada and UK/Ireland differences.

How long do you have to return a Nintendo Store purchase?
Nintendo’s U.S. Nintendo Store policy gives you 30 days after delivery to return or exchange products purchased directly from the Nintendo Store. The clock starts when the order is delivered, not when you place the order or when Nintendo confirms shipment.
This policy applies to eligible physical products sold directly by Nintendo. It does not automatically apply to a console, game or accessory bought from another retailer. A retailer’s own return period controls those purchases, although Nintendo’s warranty may still apply to a qualifying defect.

Condition required for a standard return
A change-of-mind return generally needs to be unopened and in original condition. Keep every component, insert, tag, manual, cable and other part with the product. A package that is opened, used, damaged or incomplete can be refused even if it is sent within 30 days.
- Use the original product packaging whenever possible.
- Include all parts and accessories that arrived in the box.
- Make sure the product has not been altered, marked or damaged after delivery.
- Keep your order number and delivery record until the return is resolved.
Items Nintendo says it will not accept under this return policy
Nintendo’s policy excludes returns or exchanges that are late, opened, damaged or used, purchased somewhere other than the Nintendo Store, or delivered as digital content. Those exclusions mean that downloading or activating a digital item does not create a 30-day physical-return right, and buying from a third-party seller does not make that seller’s transaction a Nintendo Store order.
Who pays return shipping?
Nintendo says it will not refund shipping costs unless the returned product was damaged, defective or different from what you ordered. For a normal change-of-mind return, plan on the outbound and return-shipping charges being nonrefundable unless Nintendo’s order-support team tells you otherwise.

Nintendo asks customers to reuse the original packaging and send the parcel with a registered or insured shipping method. That protects you if the carrier loses the package or if its condition is disputed. Keep the tracking number, carrier receipt and a photograph of the sealed parcel until Nintendo confirms receipt and the refund or exchange is complete.
How to start a Nintendo Store return
- Confirm the seller and deadline. Check that the order was placed directly with the Nintendo Store and that 30 days have not elapsed since delivery.
- Inspect the condition. Verify that the item is unopened, complete and undamaged. If it is defective or arrived damaged, identify that clearly rather than describing it as a simple change-of-mind return.
- Gather proof. Have the order number, purchase email, delivery date, receipt, product serial number if present, and photographs of any shipping or product damage ready.
- Contact Nintendo Store order support before mailing. Ask for the current return or exchange instructions and confirm whether Nintendo will issue a label or provide a return authorization.
- Pack securely. Place the product in its original box, add protective material, and put that box inside a sturdy shipping carton when needed. Do not attach labels directly to retail packaging unless Nintendo instructs you to do so.
- Ship with tracking and insurance. Retain the acceptance receipt and tracking history. Do not discard them until the case is closed.
- Monitor the resolution. Keep Nintendo’s confirmation of receipt and the final refund or replacement notice with your order records.
Do not mail a defective console or accessory without first opening a case. A support representative can tell you whether the issue should be handled as a Store return, a warranty repair or a different service request.
When a return becomes a warranty claim
A return is normally for an eligible product you no longer want or that does not meet your expectations. A warranty claim is for a covered defect in materials or workmanship. The 30-day Store window and the warranty period run under different rules, so a defective product can require warranty service even after the Store return period has expired.
Conversely, a console that works but has been opened, used or simply no longer wanted may fail the Store’s condition rules and may not qualify for warranty coverage because a warranty is not a satisfaction guarantee.

What the U.S. and Canada Nintendo warranty covers
Nintendo of America’s detailed U.S./Canada warranty says Nintendo warrants to the original purchaser that the product will be free from defects in material and workmanship for 12 months from the purchase date. Nintendo Switch 2 is listed among the covered systems.
| Product or situation | Published period or rule | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 and other covered systems | 12 months from purchase date | The U.S./Canada limited warranty is tied to the original purchaser and the purchase date. |
| Individually sold games and accessories | Three months, according to Nintendo’s order-support summary | This shorter period applies to individually sold items described in that summary; verify the term for your specific product. |
| Digital items | Not eligible for the physical Nintendo Store return policy | A digital purchase is handled under its applicable digital-purchase terms, not the 30-day physical-goods rule. |
| Product bought from another retailer | Store return period is set by that retailer | Nintendo’s direct-Store 30-day return window does not transfer to a third-party order; warranty eligibility is a separate question. |
Keep the dated receipt or order confirmation. Nintendo may need it to establish the purchase date and confirm that you are the original purchaser. The serial number should remain legible and should match the product you send for service.
Common warranty exclusions
Nintendo can deny coverage for damage or failure caused by non-licensed products, commercial use, unauthorized modification or tampering, negligence, accident, unreasonable use, or an altered or removed serial number. These exclusions are especially important for consoles that have been opened, modified, repaired with unapproved parts or used in a commercial installation.
- Do not send a system with a removed or unreadable serial number.
- Describe accidental damage accurately; a warranty for manufacturing defects is not the same as accidental-damage insurance.
- Remove unauthorized hardware or software modifications only if Nintendo’s support instructions specifically tell you how; do not perform another modification that could make the condition worse.
- Keep evidence of normal use, such as the purchase record and a clear description of the failure, rather than guessing at a cause.
How to request Nintendo warranty service in the U.S. or Canada
- Confirm the symptom. Record what fails, when it fails, any error message, and whether the problem occurs with different cables, games, controllers or power sources.
- Check the warranty status. Nintendo’s Service Center can be used to check service and warranty information. Enter the product details exactly as shown on the system and receipt.
- Contact Nintendo before shipping. Support can determine whether troubleshooting, a repair, an exchange or another remedy is appropriate and will provide the current shipping instructions.
- Prepare documentation. Keep the receipt, order number, serial number, contact details and a concise fault description. Photograph the console and accessories before packing.
- Back up and remove personal data when possible. Follow Nintendo’s instructions for account, save-data and storage handling before sending a device. Do not assume that data will be preserved during service.
- Pack only what Nintendo requests. Include required accessories and omit items support did not ask for. Use cushioning and a trackable shipment.
- Retain the case and tracking numbers. These let support locate the parcel if the repair status does not update as expected.
Warranty service does not erase the original Store policy. If the product is both defective and still within the 30-day direct-Store window, tell support that you are seeking help with a defect; Nintendo can direct you to the faster or correct channel.

For U.S. and Canada service, Nintendo says it services products for residents of the United States and Canada and does not service or modify products made for use in other countries. In practice, a product imported from another region can be refused even if the same model is sold locally, because regional hardware, power requirements, software, parts and warranty terms can differ.
Before shipping internationally, ask Nintendo whether the exact model and region are supported. International postage, customs charges and longer transit times can create additional risk, and the U.S./Canada service statement does not promise cross-border coverage for products made for another market.
What is different in the UK and Ireland?
UK and Ireland documents describe different coverage and service arrangements, so do not apply the U.S. 30-day and 12-month figures worldwide.

| UK/Ireland item | Published detail | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 manufacturer warranty | 24 months in the UK/Ireland Nintendo Switch 2 warranty document | A qualifying Switch 2 bought in those territories may have two years of manufacturer coverage under that document. |
| Repair shipping | Nintendo UK advertises prepaid return labels and tracking | Follow the label process supplied for the repair rather than paying for an unapproved method. |
| Repair time | Up to 10 working days, depending on service type | This is an estimate for the repair process, not a guarantee of total door-to-door transit time. |
| Warranty after repair | Standard Nintendo Warranty is extended by 12 months from the date the repaired product is returned | Keep the repair completion and return date because it determines the extension period. |
The UK repair page’s 12-month extension applies to repaired products under that UK service arrangement. It should not be added automatically to a U.S./Canada repair, and the 24-month figure is specifically stated for the UK/Ireland Switch 2 warranty document.

Common situations and the correct path
“I opened the Switch 2 and changed my mind.”
An opened or used item generally fails the Nintendo Store’s standard return-condition requirement, even if it is still within 30 days. Contact Store support before sending it; do not assume a refund will be approved.
“The console arrived damaged.”
Photograph the shipping carton, internal packing and product immediately. Contact Nintendo Store support before mailing. Nintendo’s policy treats damaged, defective or incorrectly supplied products differently for shipping-refund purposes, but support must document the case and provide instructions.
“My Switch stopped working after the Store window.”
Check the purchase date against the applicable warranty term, then use the Service Center and contact Nintendo. A failure after 30 days can still be a warranty matter if it is within the 12-month U.S./Canada system period and none of the exclusions applies.
“I bought it from a local or online retailer.”
Ask that retailer about its return deadline and condition rules. For a suspected manufacturing defect, also check Nintendo warranty eligibility; the Nintendo Store’s 30-day rule does not govern the retailer’s sale.
“I bought a console abroad.”
Identify the country and model before contacting support. U.S./Canada service is limited to residents and products intended for those markets, and Nintendo says it does not service or modify products made for use in other countries.
Return-versus-warranty decision table
| Your situation | First contact | Key evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Unopened direct Nintendo Store product, within 30 days of delivery | Nintendo Store order support | Order number, delivery date and intact packaging |
| Opened, used or incomplete direct-Store product | Nintendo Store order support before shipping | Photos, order details and a precise condition description |
| Defective U.S./Canada system within 12 months | Nintendo Service Center or Nintendo support | Receipt, serial number, symptom notes and case number |
| Individually sold game or accessory within the stated three-month period | Nintendo support or the selling retailer, depending on purchase channel | Receipt, product details and proof of failure |
| UK/Ireland Switch 2 within its documented 24-month warranty | Nintendo UK/Ireland service | Proof of purchase and the regional model information |
| Product made for another country | Nintendo support in the product’s intended region | Model, region, serial number and purchase country |
Checklist before you send anything
- Confirm whether you are requesting a return, exchange, repair or warranty assessment.
- Verify the seller, delivery date, purchase date and applicable country.
- Read the condition rules; do not ship an opened or incomplete item expecting an automatic change-of-mind refund.
- Contact Nintendo first for a defective or damaged product.
- Save the receipt, order confirmation, serial number, support case and shipping tracking.
- Use original packaging and a registered or insured method when the Store policy asks for it.
- Remove personal information and follow Nintendo’s data-backup instructions before repair.
- Keep all correspondence until the refund, exchange or service case is formally closed.
The safest rule is to identify the transaction and region first: a direct U.S. Nintendo Store physical purchase has a 30-day post-delivery return window only when the item meets the condition requirements, while warranty service is a separate, defect-focused process whose duration and geographic eligibility depend on the product and market.
