Nintendo’s Japanese ordinary-share stock code is 7974. Those shares trade on the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) Prime Market in yen, in board lots of 100 shares. For a U.S. OTC instrument, Citi identifies NTDOY as an unsponsored American depositary receipt (ADR), with four depositary receipts representing one Nintendo ordinary share. The two instruments are not the same security. Nintendo reported a 219-yen-per-share dividend for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, and displayed a 162-yen annual forecast for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027; the forecast can change.
What is Nintendo’s stock ticker?
Nintendo’s own investor-relations FAQ answers the question “What is the stock ticker number of Nintendo?” with “It is 7974.” The company’s Status of Shares page identifies 7974 as Nintendo Co., Ltd.’s stock code and lists the stock on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market. The figures on that status page are dated March 31, 2026.
In Japan, the code is generally called a stock code rather than a U.S.-style ticker. Nintendo says its Prime Market listing dates from the Tokyo market restructuring on April 4, 2022. The standard trading unit is 100 shares, so an order for one board lot represents 100 ordinary shares, subject to the rules and order types supported by your intermediary.
7974 and NTDOY are different instruments
Readers searching from the United States often encounter NTDOY. Citi’s current depositary-receipt information identifies NTDOY as an OTC, unsponsored ADR. The ratio is one Nintendo ordinary share to four depositary receipts (1:4). In other words, four NTDOY receipts correspond to one ordinary Nintendo share in the depositary-receipt structure; NTDOY is not the Tokyo-listed ordinary share and is not a ticker for the TSE listing.
| Feature | Nintendo ordinary shares | NTDOY depositary receipt |
|---|---|---|
| Identifier | 7974 | NTDOY |
| Security type | Ordinary share | American depositary receipt |
| Venue | Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market | U.S. over-the-counter market |
| Trading currency and local session | Japanese yen; Tokyo trading schedule | Pricing and hours follow the OTC market and the intermediary handling the receipt |
| Share/receipt relationship | One ordinary share | Four receipts represent one ordinary share |
| Program description | Tokyo-listed company stock | Unsponsored ADR, according to Citi |
Citi’s program page is the appropriate place to verify the current NTDOY description and ratio: Nintendo Company Trading Volumes / depositary receipt details. A 2022 Citi corporate-action notice records a change in the ratio from 1:8 to 1:4: Corporate Action Notice, September 7, 2022.
The ratio does not make the two securities interchangeable. They trade in different venues and currencies, and their prices can diverge because of exchange rates, market hours, liquidity, market-making, depositary charges and other trading conditions. The cited issuer and depositary pages do not establish which brokers offer either instrument, what commissions or depositary fees apply, how orders are routed, or the tax and voting treatment for a particular investor. Check those details with the broker and the applicable tax authority in your country.

JPX says the domestic-stock market is closed on Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, January 1–3 and December 31. The official schedule is at JPX Trading Hours — Domestic Stocks. Convert JST to your own time zone before planning an order, and confirm your broker’s local display and cutoff rules. A broker may accept an instruction outside the exchange’s auction periods, hold it for the next session, or apply its own deadline. Those order-entry windows are not the same as exchange trading hours.

| Fiscal-year period | Interim dividend | Year-end dividend | Annual total | Record date | Effective distribution date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Year ended March 31, 2026 | 42 yen | 177 yen | 219 yen per share | September 30, 2025 (interim); March 31, 2026 (year-end) | December 1, 2025 (interim); June 29, 2026 (year-end) |
The 219-yen figure is the completed fiscal-year amount reported by Nintendo Co., Ltd.; it is not a forecast. A record date determines which holders are recorded for the distribution, while the effective distribution date is when the payment becomes effective under the company’s stated schedule. Investors using an ADR should not assume that the yen amount equals a fixed U.S.-dollar payment: currency conversion, the 1:4 receipt ratio and any applicable charges affect the amount received, and the cited sources do not specify an individual investor’s net payment.

Nintendo’s dividend page displays a 162-yen annual dividend forecast per share for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027. The same page shows the interim and year-end components as not yet specified and lists record dates of September 30, 2026 and March 31, 2027. Because the interim record date had passed by the information date of October 13, 2026 while the page still showed the component as not yet specified, do not treat a component amount as finalized. Recheck the company’s dividend page and its IR Calendar for an updated declaration before relying on it.

An annual forecast is management’s displayed expectation, not a guaranteed payment. Nintendo can revise a forecast when results, share counts, policy calculations or other corporate circumstances change. The 162-yen number also refers to an ordinary share; an ADR holder must account for the 1:4 structure and any conversion or depositary costs.
How Nintendo says it sets dividends
Nintendo’s general explanation is that it pays dividends after considering the profit level for the fiscal year. Its May 8, 2026 year-end notice describes a revised annual-dividend policy applying from the year-end dividend for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026. The notice states:
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
“The annual dividend per share is established at the higher of the amount calculated by dividing 40% of consolidated operating profit for the fiscal year by the total number of outstanding shares, excluding treasury shares, as of the end of the fiscal year rounded up to the 1 yen digit, or the amount calculated based on the 60% consolidated payout ratio rounded up to the 1 yen digit.”

The complete notice is available in Nintendo’s PDF: Notice of Dividend, May 8, 2026. The wording applies to the policy described in that notice; it should not be presented as a timeless formula for every past or future interim payment. Nintendo’s interim rule and earlier policy differ, so use the policy in force for the relevant declaration.

Quick Recap
How to identify the right Nintendo security before placing an order
- Define your market. If you want the Japanese ordinary share, look for stock code 7974 on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market. If you are considering the U.S. OTC receipt, verify that the instrument is NTDOY and that your account supports it.
- Confirm the instrument type. 7974 is an ordinary share; NTDOY is an unsponsored ADR. Do not enter NTDOY when you intend to buy the Tokyo listing, or assume that 7974 is a U.S. OTC symbol.
- Check the trading currency and session. 7974 trades in yen during JPX sessions. NTDOY quotations follow OTC handling and may be shown in U.S. dollars. Convert the Tokyo schedule from JST if you are submitting an order from another time zone.
- Review the quantity convention. Nintendo states that the Japanese stock unit is 100 shares. An ADR represents four receipts per ordinary share under Citi’s current ratio, so confirm how your broker expresses quantity and fractional holdings.
- Read account-specific terms. Verify commissions, currency conversion, depositary charges, settlement, dividend handling, tax withholding and voting arrangements directly with the broker and, for NTDOY, the depositary documentation. These terms are not established by the issuer’s ticker and dividend pages.
- Check the latest company notices. Dividend forecasts, record dates, ADR terms and exchange schedules can change. Use Nintendo’s current IR pages, JPX’s schedule and Citi’s current ADR page rather than relying on an old quote page or an outdated ratio.
Common ticker and dividend mistakes
- Calling NTDOY the Tokyo ticker. The Japanese ordinary-share code is 7974; NTDOY is a separate OTC ADR.
- Ignoring the 1:4 ratio. Four receipts correspond to one ordinary share in Citi’s current program. A receipt quote cannot be compared with a one-share Tokyo quote without accounting for that relationship and the currency.
- Using Tokyo hours for an OTC order. JPX’s 9:00–11:30 and 12:30–15:30 JST auctions describe 7974, not NTDOY’s OTC quotation.
- Treating a forecast as a declared dividend. Nintendo’s 162-yen FY2027 annual figure is displayed as a forecast, while the interim and year-end amounts were marked as not yet specified on the cited page.
- Assuming the yen dividend is the cash received. An ADR distribution can involve conversion, the receipt ratio and charges; the net amount varies by account and jurisdiction.
- Expecting a shareholder gift or discount. Nintendo’s FAQ says there is no special shareholder benefit plan.

Bottom line for a Nintendo stock search
Use 7974 for Nintendo’s ordinary shares on the Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime Market. Use NTDOY only when you specifically mean Citi’s OTC unsponsored ADR, whose current ratio is four receipts for one ordinary share. The latest completed fiscal-year dividend in the cited company data is 219 yen per ordinary share for FY2026, while Nintendo’s displayed FY2027 forecast is 162 yen annually and remains subject to revision. Before trading, verify the instrument, venue, currency, session, quantity, fees and current corporate notices.
