The available reporting supports one clear theme from Nintendo of America president and COO Devon Pritchard’s interview with Variety: Nintendo sees the live-action The Legend of Zelda film as a way to bring its experiences to both current fans and new audiences. It does not establish what Pritchard said about GTA 6, Nintendo’s third-party game goals, or the details of her first year in the role, so those points should not be presented as confirmed interview takeaways.

What Pritchard said about the Zelda movie

In a September 18, 2026 report on Pritchard’s Variety interview, Nintendo Life quoted her describing the film and Nintendo’s partnership with Sony Pictures as opportunities to broaden access to Nintendo experiences:

“We’re working with Sony Pictures. We are going to have a movie come out in the end of April…those partnerships and touchpoints with companies like Sony and Sony Pictures around how we can bring those experiences more broadly to not only our current players and fans but to new ones, I think that’s one of the most exciting things for us over the next few years”

The quotation is reproduced by Nintendo Life’s coverage of the interview. It reflects Pritchard’s stated aim; it does not demonstrate that the movie will bring in new audiences.

What is confirmed about the live-action film

Nintendo’s official announcement identifies the film as The Legend of Zelda and gives April 30, 2027 as its planned worldwide theatrical release date. Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle worldwide theatrical distribution. Nintendo and Sony co-finance the production, with Nintendo providing more than half of the financing.

Nintendo and Arad Productions are producing the film. Wes Ball is directing, with Bo Bragason cast as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link. These details come from Nintendo’s September 8, 2026 announcement; the release date is planned, not a guarantee that the schedule cannot change.

Why Nintendo wants to reach people beyond its consoles

The film fits a broader strategy Nintendo has described publicly: use channels beyond dedicated game systems to introduce its characters and entertainment to more people. In a shareholder Q&A, Shigeru Miyamoto said smartphones, movie theaters, YouTube and other channels can reach audiences that Nintendo’s dedicated platforms alone cannot. He presented those touchpoints as a way to introduce Nintendo characters to people unfamiliar with them and potentially encourage future game sales.

Nintendo’s coverage of Miyamoto’s remarks describes this as an effort to expand the audience for Nintendo IP, not a claim that every movie or video viewer will become a game customer.

How this connects to Nintendo’s current platform business

In a February 4, 2026 investor briefing, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said Switch 2 sales remained stable and favorable at the beginning of that year. He also described films and video as ways to increase consumer touchpoints with Nintendo IP across regions and age groups. That is Nintendo’s assessment at that particular point in time, not a current sales estimate. The statement appears in Nintendo’s fiscal-year 2026 nine-month results briefing.

What the available reporting does not establish about GTA 6 or third-party games

The interview’s headline topics include GTA 6 and third-party game goals, but the accessible coverage and official Nintendo statements cited here do not establish Pritchard’s position on either subject. They also do not provide a detailed account of her first year as Nintendo of America chief. Without the original interview text, attributing a specific GTA 6 comment, third-party target, or first-year assessment to her would go beyond what is verified.

The confirmed material is narrower: Pritchard expressed enthusiasm for partnerships and media touchpoints that could bring Nintendo experiences to existing fans and new audiences, while Nintendo has separately explained why it pursues channels beyond consoles.
