No—Nintendo no longer makes the DS as a current console line. Nintendo’s Japanese DS family page marks the DS Lite as production ended, and Nintendo support pages list the original DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi LL among systems for which official repair intake has ended. You can still find used or refurbished consoles and cartridges, but a listing should be treated as second-hand inventory, not newly manufactured Nintendo hardware.
The exact final production date was not published as one date covering every DS model and region. The clearest answer is therefore about present status: DS is a legacy platform, not an active Nintendo product family.

What “they still make DS” means in 2026
Nintendo’s current DS family product page covers the original Nintendo DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi LL, and identifies the DS Lite as “production ended.” That is official confirmation that at least the best-known DS revision is no longer manufactured. Nintendo’s support records reinforce the broader conclusion: the company has ended repair intake for the DS models listed on its Japanese termination page.

Nintendo released several models over the life of the platform, and support and sales policies differ by territory. It is accurate to say Nintendo no longer makes DS consoles as a current product line; it is not accurate to assign one universal final year without a source that does so.

Used-market availability is a separate question. Retailers, auction sites and refurbishment sellers may have DS systems, game cards, chargers or styluses in stock. Inventory, condition, price and seller authorization change constantly, and Nintendo has not presented a current official channel for new DS hardware. Check any listing as a pre-owned purchase unless the seller can independently document otherwise.
Production and official support timeline
The end of manufacturing and the end of repair service were not announced as one event. Nintendo published model-specific repair cutoffs, largely because replacement parts became difficult to secure.
| Model or service | Official information | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| DS family product status | Nintendo Japan’s product page labels DS Lite “production ended.” | DS Lite is not a current manufactured product; the family is presented as legacy hardware. |
| Original Nintendo DS (NTR-001) | Nintendo Japan announced on April 4, 2016 that it would stop accepting units received after April 30, 2016, citing difficulty obtaining parts. See the repair-closure notice. | Official Japanese repair intake ended after the stated receipt cutoff. |
| DS Lite (USG-001) | Nintendo Japan announced on April 4, 2017 that it would stop accepting units received after April 30, 2017, again citing parts availability. See the DS Lite notice. | Official Japanese repair intake ended after the 2017 cutoff. |
| DSi (TWL-001) and DSi LL (UTL-001) | Both appear on Nintendo Japan’s repair-termination list. Nintendo of America separately says it no longer accepts DSi-family service requests. | Do not expect Nintendo-authorized service for these models. Independent repair capability is a separate matter. |
These are region-specific service announcements. An independent repair shop may still replace a screen, battery or connector if it has compatible parts and the necessary skill, but that is not Nintendo support and is not guaranteed for any particular unit.

Which DS model is worth looking for?
All four models run Nintendo DS software, but their hardware features and accessory support differ. The most important distinction for a buyer is whether a game depends on the Game Boy Advance (GBA) cartridge slot or an accessory that plugs into it.
| Model | Key characteristics | Compatibility considerations | Used-market checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original DS | First-generation DS form factor with a GBA cartridge slot. | Supports DS games and GBA-slot accessories that the hardware was designed to use. | Inspect the hinge, dual screens, touch panel, cartridge slots and battery age. |
| DS Lite | Smaller and sleeker than the original DS, with a brighter screen, larger stylus and longer-lasting rechargeable battery, according to Nintendo’s comparison guide. | Retains the GBA cartridge slot, so it supports DS titles and compatible GBA-slot functions. | Check hinge tightness, screen yellowing or dead pixels, the GBA-slot cover and charger compatibility. |
| DSi | Adds DSi-era features such as cameras, SD-card support and access to DSiWare; it removes the GBA cartridge slot. | DS games that require a GBA-slot accessory or GBA-linked feature cannot use that function on DSi. | Test both cameras, SD-card door, touch input, battery and the included stylus. |
| DSi LL (called DSi XL in some markets) | Larger-screen DSi-family design with the same DSi software and hardware limitations. | Like DSi, it cannot use DS games’ GBA-slot-dependent accessories or features. | Confirm the regional model, larger screens, hinge, stylus and correct AC adapter. |
Names and packaging vary by region, especially for DSi LL/DSi XL. Confirm the model number printed on the system rather than relying only on a seller’s title.
Can a DS play 3DS games?
No. Nintendo’s software compatibility guide describes a one-way relationship:

- DS Lite doesn't just play DS games it also features an additional port for Game Boy Advance Game Paks

- Ready to take on the world? With Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, you can connect wirelessly, chat with friends while you play and compete with Nintendo DS owners across the globe. All you need to play is a Nintendo DS and a Wi-Fi-ready game

- DS software runs on Nintendo DS-family systems and on Nintendo 3DS-family systems.
- Nintendo 3DS software is designed for 3DS-family systems and does not run on the original DS, DS Lite, DSi or DSi LL.
Therefore, buying a DS to play a 3DS-exclusive cartridge will not work. If your library contains both generations, a compatible 3DS-family console is the more flexible hardware choice because it can also run DS cards. Even then, check each title: region rules, required accessories and special features can vary.

A DS or DS Lite game that requires an accessory connected through the GBA cartridge slot cannot use that accessory on DSi or DSi LL. Some GBA-link features are likewise unavailable on DSi-family systems. Before purchasing a console, identify the exact game version and read its accessory requirements.
How to evaluate a used DS listing
Because new production has ended, condition matters more than the model name in a listing. Use this inspection sequence when buying locally or asking a seller for evidence.

- Confirm the exact model and region. Ask for a photograph of the system label or model number. Check whether it is original DS, DS Lite, DSi or DSi LL/XL, and verify the region if a game or accessory has regional restrictions.
- Require a power-on demonstration. The unit should boot reliably without repeated resets, excessive heat or a loose power connection. Ask how long it holds a charge; an old battery may need replacement even if the console works.
- Test both screens. Look for dead pixels, discoloration, lines, dim backlighting and a cracked top or bottom panel. Open and close the hinge gently; excessive looseness or clicking can indicate damage.
- Test touch and controls. Confirm that the stylus registers taps across the entire lower screen. Check the directional pad, face buttons, shoulder buttons, Start and Select, volume control and wireless switch where fitted.
- Test the cartridge slot. Insert a compatible DS game and verify that it is recognized consistently. On an original DS or DS Lite, inspect the GBA slot if you need an accessory-dependent game.
- Check included parts. Confirm that the AC adapter is compatible with the model, and ask whether the stylus, battery cover and any GBA-slot cover are included. A missing proprietary part can cost more than a generic listing suggests.
- Read the return terms. A short video proves only that the console worked at one moment. A return window gives you time to test charging, sleep mode, touch accuracy and game recognition at home.
These checks are buyer precautions, not Nintendo guarantees. A refurbished label also does not by itself mean Nintendo performed the work or that replacement parts are original.

The DSi Shop is closed for new purchases. Nintendo of America’s DSi Shop FAQ records two historical cutoffs:
- Purchases of DSi Shop points ended September 30, 2016.
- Purchases of DSi software ended March 31, 2017.
The same FAQ said previously purchased content could be redownloaded and transferred for an unspecified period after the store closure. Because Nintendo did not provide a final date for every redownload or transfer function, do not assume that a newly purchased used DSi will provide dependable access to DSiWare today. Treat any surviving download capability as service-dependent, and plan around physical DS cartridges when possible.
Why the DS still has a large second-hand ecosystem
Ending production did not erase the platform’s historical reach. Nintendo’s current hardware and software sales data reports 154.02 million Nintendo DS hardware units and 948.76 million software units sold worldwide, life-to-date, as of June 30, 2026. These are cumulative historical totals, not current production or a forecast of new sales.
For context, Nintendo’s fiscal 2013 annual review recorded 2.35 million DS-family hardware units and 33.38 million software units during the fiscal year ended March 31, 2013. That figure groups DS, DS Lite, DSi and DSi XL, and shows that the family was still selling while Nintendo 3DS became the company’s newer handheld focus.
Several games account for a substantial share of the installed base. Nintendo’s software sales list reports worldwide life-to-date figures, including bundled software, of 30.80 million for New Super Mario Bros., 23.96 million for nintendogs and 23.60 million for Mario Kart DS, all measured as of September 30, 2016. Those numbers help explain why cartridges and working consoles remain available even though manufacturing has ended.

Should you buy a DS or a 3DS-family system?
Choose a DS or DS Lite when
- Your priority is a physical DS cartridge library.
- You need a GBA cartridge slot for a game accessory or link feature.
- You prefer the simpler original hardware and do not need DSi camera, SD or DSiWare functions.
Choose a DSi or DSi LL when
- You specifically want DSi-era camera or SD-card features.
- Your games do not require a GBA-slot accessory or link function.
- You find a well-tested unit in better condition than an equivalent DS Lite.
Choose a 3DS-family system when
- You want to play both DS and 3DS software.
- You are building a library that includes 3DS-exclusive cartridges.
- You accept that you are buying another discontinued family and must still evaluate battery, screens, controls and service condition.
The deciding factor is the exact software and accessory list, not simply the newest-looking shell. Write down the games you intend to play, identify any GBA-slot requirement, then match that list to the model before paying.
Bottom line for buyers in 2026
Nintendo does not currently manufacture DS consoles, and official Nintendo repair intake has ended for the major DS models covered by its support notices. Used and refurbished systems can still be practical for playing DS cartridges, but availability and quality depend on the second-hand seller. For the broadest cartridge compatibility, a working DS Lite is often the straightforward target; for DSi features, choose a DSi-family model only after confirming that none of your games need the missing GBA slot. If you also need 3DS games, buy compatible 3DS-family hardware instead—the DS cannot run them.
