The best Nintendo DS games are the ones that remain rewarding to play and make the most of a handheld built around two screens and a stylus. This ranking balances lasting appeal, variety, and distinctive DS features; it is an editorial selection, not a definitive consensus. It also considers physical-copy practicality, though current prices and availability have not been verified.
How this ranking works
Critic scores, retrospective lists, sales records, and the DS hardware each tell a different part of the story. Metacritic identifies Chrono Trigger as its 2008 DS Game of the Year and notes the DS release’s dual-screen presentation and touchscreen functionality. Nintendo’s best-seller figures indicate popularity, not quality. Retrospective selections from Nintendo Life and GamesRadar+ offer editorial context, while GamesRadar+ also highlights creative uses of the touchscreen and stylus. The order below weighs lasting appeal, how well each game suits the DS, and genre variety rather than treating any one measure as decisive.
The 10 best Nintendo DS games
-
Chrono Trigger
A standout role-playing game and the clearest pick here for a long, story-led adventure. Its DS edition’s dual-screen presentation and touchscreen functionality give it a platform-specific distinction noted by Metacritic, which named it the DS Game of the Year in 2008. That is an attributed historical distinction, not a claim about today’s review consensus.

New Super Mario Bros.
A strong all-round choice for players who want a straightforward platform game. It also sits atop Nintendo’s historical DS best-seller list: the company’s April 29, 2013 document records 30.80 million copies. That figure belongs to that dated snapshot and is evidence of sales, not a quality score.

Mario Kart DS
A natural pick for quick races and competitive play, and one of the system’s most popular releases. Nintendo’s April 29, 2013 sales document lists 23.60 million copies. The historical total helps explain its broad reach, but does not by itself establish how any individual player will rate it.
-
Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
These paired releases are among Nintendo’s named DS best-sellers and make this list’s strongest choice for a Pokémon-focused adventure. Treat the pair as one entry: the source’s sales list names them together, and this ranking does not distinguish one version as universally better.

New Super Mario Bros (Renewed)- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
-
Animal Crossing: Wild World
A gentler, open-ended option among the best-seller selections. Its inclusion gives the list a change of pace from racing, platforming, and role-playing, making it a useful choice for players who prefer a more relaxed game.

Brain Age 2: More Training in Minutes a Day!
A distinctly different kind of DS pick: short, repeatable activities rather than a conventional adventure. Nintendo includes it among the system’s best-sellers, and its presence reflects how varied the DS library is beyond its major action and role-playing franchises.
-
Pokémon Diamond and Pearl
The third paired Pokémon entry on the list, also named in Nintendo’s historical best-seller group. It is included for genre representation and popularity; this ranking does not make a version-by-version comparison.

A useful pick for anyone interested in games built around the DS’s touch-oriented interaction. It appears in Nintendo’s best-seller list, and broadens a ranking that would otherwise lean heavily on traditional platforming, racing, and role-playing.

What the sales list can—and cannot—tell you
Nintendo’s April 29, 2013 document names these ten DS best-sellers: New Super Mario Bros., Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver, Animal Crossing: Wild World, Pokémon Black/White, Brain Age 2, Pokémon Diamond/Pearl, Brain Age, Mario Kart DS, Nintendogs, and Super Mario 64 DS. Its sales totals are historical values, not current lifetime totals. Sales help identify games that reached a wide audience; they cannot determine which game will best suit a particular player.
Quick Recap
Choosing a DS game to collect
- Pick by play style: start with Chrono Trigger for a story-led role-playing game, Mario Kart DS for racing, a Pokémon pair for that series, or Brain Age 2 for short activities.
- Check the physical copy: condition, completeness, region, and compatibility with your particular handheld can all matter. Current prices, stock, and listing authenticity are not established here, so compare the actual item before buying.
- Account for the hardware: the DS’s dual screens and touchscreen are useful comparison points, but not every game depends on them equally. GamesRadar+ specifically calls attention to creative touchscreen and stylus use.
- Check your system: the DS family includes the DS Lite, DSi, and DSi XL. GameSpot discusses those hardware revisions and states in its article’s publication context that Switch does not offer DS-library backward compatibility. That time-bound statement should not be extended to later platforms or services without current confirmation.
