The Nintendo Australia commercial featuring Lleyton Hewitt and his son Cruz promoted Nintendo Switch Sports, not Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. Coverage published in April 2022 shows the father-and-son pair demonstrating motion controls and two-player play, including tennis and bowling. The similarly named Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is a separate Nintendo Switch 2 game scheduled for release on 22 October 2026.
What game appears in the Lleyton and Cruz Hewitt commercial?
The documented Hewitt advertisement is for Nintendo Switch Sports, Nintendo’s motion-controlled sports game for the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo Life’s 22 April 2022 report describes Australian tennis player and former world No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt partnering with his son Cruz to demonstrate the game’s motion controls and two-player mode. Nintendo Wire also identified the April 2022 promotion as a Nintendo Switch Sports campaign.

The commercial presents the pair competing through physical movements detected by Joy-Con controllers. Tennis and bowling are specifically identified in the contemporaneous coverage; MKAU Gaming additionally describes tennis, volleyball, bowling and badminton in the father-and-son challenge.

The confusion comes from the later product name Nintendo Switch Sports Resort. Both titles use “Switch Sports,” and both emphasize motion-controlled activities, but they are different releases on different Nintendo hardware. The available official Resort announcements do not identify Lleyton or Cruz Hewitt as participants in that campaign.

When did Nintendo Switch Sports launch in Australia?
Nintendo’s Australian product information gives Nintendo Switch Sports a release date of 29 April 2022. The game supports local play for up to four people and online play, depending on the activity and mode. It is playable on Nintendo Switch with standard Joy-Con motion controls.
Nintendo describes the game as a sequel to Wii Sports. In a developer interview, director Yoshikazu Yamashita says the returning sports include tennis, bowling and chambara, while the new launch lineup adds volleyball, badminton and soccer. Nintendo also said golf would be added in a later update.
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
Which sports and accessories are included?
Nintendo’s Australian description lists eight sports associated with Nintendo Switch Sports:
- Tennis
- Badminton
- Basketball
- Volleyball
- Bowling
- Golf
- Football
- Chambara
Sports use Joy-Con movements rather than traditional button-only controls. Tennis, for example, is played by swinging a Joy-Con like a racket. The physical edition includes a Leg Strap, and Nintendo also sells the accessory separately. The strap is used for football play; Nintendo does not present it as necessary for tennis.
Rank #3
- The ultimate game that brings together 30 different sports
- Challenge your family or friends and may the best player win
- Multiple game modes available: Quick match or Tournament / Team mode or Solo
- Explore a multitude of environments! Volcano / Desert / Snowy countries
- Unlock new costumes and choose to play with motion or buttons on NSW
Can you still buy the game from the commercial?
Yes. The game shown in the Hewitt commercial is the released Nintendo Switch Sports product for Nintendo Switch, rather than an unreleased Resort edition. Check that a listing is for the Nintendo Switch version and note whether it is a physical package or a digital purchase. If you want football’s leg-mounted control option, confirm that the physical package includes the Leg Strap or obtain the accessory separately.
How Nintendo Switch Sports Resort differs
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is a separate Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive. Nintendo’s official announcements dated 12 June and 9 October 2026 describe a 22 October 2026 release, 12 motion-controlled sports and a dedicated introduction video and TVCM. The game uses Joy-Con 2 controllers and includes tennis among its activities.
Rank #4
- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.
- More than 15 environments and tons of unlockable items.

The different platform requirement matters: owning the original Nintendo Switch version does not turn it into the Nintendo Switch 2 Resort game, and the two products should not be treated as alternate names for one release.
What the Hewitt campaign demonstrates
The commercial’s appeal is the immediacy of the controls. Lleyton Hewitt brings recognizable tennis expertise, while Cruz provides the two-player, family-play angle. The ad is therefore best understood as a demonstration of accessible local competition: players swing, bowl and move in ways that mirror the on-screen sport, with the console translating those gestures into gameplay.
That positioning also explains why reports mention both tennis and bowling. They show two different control patterns within the same game: a sport closely associated with Hewitt’s career and a turn-based activity that makes the two-player format easy to see.
The accurate takeaway
If you remember a Nintendo Australia commercial with Lleyton and Cruz Hewitt playing motion-controlled sports, you are remembering the April 2022 Nintendo Switch Sports campaign. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is the later Nintendo Switch 2 title announced for 22 October 2026, and the official materials currently available do not verify that the Hewitts appear in its TV commercial.
