Verdict: Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo is the better choice for Nintendo fans who want game-themed, motion-responsive alarms without a recurring content fee. Hatch Restore 3 is better for a broader sleep routine because it combines gradual sunrise and sunset lighting, a sound machine and a night light; its complete content library is optional through Hatch+.

The decision is therefore less about a single “best” clock and more about the kind of wake-up you want: interactive game scenes and playful movement cues, or a conventional light-and-audio routine designed around sleep and wind-down.

How Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo wakes you

Nintendo describes Alarmo as an interactive alarm clock that uses motion-sensor technology to respond to your movements and scenes from Nintendo games. Instead of simply playing a fixed tone at a set time, it is intended to make waking feel like an in-game event. The sound and scene are the product’s identity; the motion response is the feature that separates it from a conventional alarm.

Motion response and Button Mode

Alarmo is designed for standard Twin, Queen and King bed arrangements. Nintendo cautions that a pet, a fan or another sleeper can create movement that confuses the sensor. If your sleeping environment is likely to trigger false responses, Button Mode lets you control the alarm manually rather than relying on movement detection. Place the clock where it has a clear view of the bed and test the response before depending on it for a work or school deadline.

Scenes, downloads and recent software changes

Alarmo includes scenes based on Nintendo games, and Nintendo provides additional scene downloads over Wi-Fi. Version 3.0.0 added per-day alarm settings, adjustable sleepy-sound duration and scene previews. Version 4.0.0, released May 18, 2026, added game-title-first scene selection and Shuffle Favorites. Those changes make it easier to organize scenes when you own several and to vary the wake-up experience without manually choosing one every morning.

What Alarmo does not do

Alarmo is a standalone clock. It does not interact with a Nintendo Switch or another game system, and Nintendo says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is not needed as of February 14, 2025. Nintendo also says the device has no camera and that no movement-related data is shared. Wi-Fi is used for clock time synchronization, Nintendo Account linking, free scene downloads and firmware updates; it is not described as a requirement for the alarm’s basic local function once the clock is configured.

How Hatch Restore 3 approaches waking and sleep

Hatch Restore 3 combines three conventional bedside functions: a sunrise and sunset light, a sound machine and a night light. Tom’s Guide’s January 2025 review describes phone-free controls, enhanced audio and a larger selection of sleep sounds than earlier Restore models. Its routine is built around gradual changes in light and sound rather than movement-triggered game scenes.

Sunrise, sunset and night-light routines

A sunrise routine gradually introduces light before the scheduled wake time, while a sunset routine provides a corresponding wind-down sequence. The night-light function is useful when you need low-level bedside illumination without turning on a room light. The cited sources do not provide brightness measurements, transition-duration ranges or clinical evidence that the light improves sleep, so choose it for the routine it offers rather than for a guaranteed physiological effect.

Sound library and Hatch+ boundaries

Basic sunrise operation and some sleep and wake sounds are available without a subscription. Hatch+ is optional, but it is the route to the full content library. That distinction matters if you are comparing ownership costs: the hardware can function as a sunrise alarm without Hatch+, while users who want the complete set of sounds and routines need to budget for the ongoing service.

Wake-up experience: which method suits you?

Choose Alarmo’s interaction when motivation matters

Alarmo is a strong match if the novelty of a game scene helps you get out of bed. Movement-responsive audio can make the alarm feel less repetitive, and the Nintendo presentation gives the clock a clear personality. It is especially appealing if you already enjoy Nintendo’s characters and want that theme in a bedroom or family space.

The trade-off is environmental sensitivity. A restless partner, a pet jumping on the bed or airflow from a fan can affect motion detection. Button Mode is the practical fallback, but using it changes the experience from hands-off interaction to a manual alarm.

Choose Restore 3’s gradual light when consistency matters

Restore 3 is better suited to someone who wants the same structured sequence every day: light increases toward wake time, audio can accompany the routine, and a sunset program can mark bedtime. It does not depend on a sleeper moving in a particular way, so the routine is less exposed to the sensor-confusion scenarios Nintendo lists for Alarmo.

The trade-off is that the richer content experience is tied to Hatch+. If you are satisfied with the included sunrise function and available sounds, you can avoid the subscription; if variety is central to your routine, include the recurring cost in your decision.

Ownership cost and subscription math

Hardware price alone favors neither product decisively. Nintendo’s current page shows Alarmo at a regular $139.99, while the company’s early-2025 announcement cited a suggested U.S. price of $99.99. Because Nintendo’s listing is the newer figure and prices can change, verify the live price in your region before buying.

Tom’s Guide reported Restore 3 at $169.99 when it launched in January 2025. Hatch+ costs $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year. Using the annual option, the first-year total for Restore 3 with full Hatch+ access is $219.98 before tax ($169.99 hardware plus $49.99 service). That is an arithmetic comparison, not a manufacturer-stated bundle price.

For a fair budget comparison, decide whether you actually need the complete Hatch+ library. Comparing Alarmo with Restore 3’s hardware alone answers the one-time-purchase question; comparing Alarmo with Restore 3 plus Hatch+ answers the question for a subscriber who wants every available routine and sound.

Requirements and setup

Set up Nintendo Alarmo

  1. Choose the location. Place the clock beside a Twin, Queen or King bed with a clear view of the sleeper. Keep in mind Nintendo’s warning about pets, fans and another person in the bed.
  2. Connect power. Use the included USB Type-C cable with an AC adapter. Nintendo includes the cable but not the AC adapter. The built-in backup battery preserves the time if household power is interrupted.
  3. Connect Wi-Fi. Use Wi-Fi for accurate time synchronization, Nintendo Account linking, scene downloads and firmware updates. A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required.
  4. Choose an alarm scene. Select a game scene and set the alarm time. On version 4.0.0 or later, game-title-first selection and Shuffle Favorites are available; version 3.0.0 or later also supports per-day alarm settings, sleepy-sound duration adjustment and scene previews.
  5. Test the sensing behavior. Move naturally in bed to confirm that the clock responds as expected. If the room or bed produces false triggers, switch to Button Mode and practice the manual control before relying on the alarm.
  6. Keep software current. Install firmware updates when prompted so that scene organization and alarm features match the current version.

Set up Hatch Restore 3

  1. Place and power the clock. Position Restore 3 where its light is visible from the bed and its controls are reachable. The cited specifications do not state a special bed-size requirement.
  2. Complete app and Bluetooth setup. Tom’s Guide reports that customization uses the companion app and Bluetooth. Use that setup to configure the wake and wind-down routines.
  3. Build the routine. Select a sunrise time, optional sunset sequence, sound and night-light behavior. Basic sunrise and some sounds are available without Hatch+.
  4. Decide on content access. Add Hatch+ only if you want the complete library. Select the monthly or annual billing option according to how long you expect to keep the service.
  5. Use the bedside controls. After customization, the cited review describes phone-free controls, so normal daily use does not require reaching for a phone.

Connectivity, privacy and data considerations

Alarmo’s network requirements are specific: Wi-Fi supports time synchronization, Nintendo Account linking, free scene downloads and firmware updates. Nintendo states that the clock has no camera and that no movement-related data is shared. Those statements address the motion sensor directly, but they do not turn Alarmo into a sleep-monitoring device; there is no independent sleep-tracking validation in the cited material.

Restore 3’s cited setup uses an app and Bluetooth for customization, but the available sources do not make an equivalent claim about motion sensing, camera hardware or movement-data sharing. Do not assume that Restore 3 measures sleep simply because it is marketed for sleep routines. Its documented functions in the supplied specifications are light, sound and night-light features.

Content, customization and long-term use

Alarmo’s content model

Alarmo’s differentiator is themed content rather than a large wellness catalog. Free scene downloads expand the selection, and recent firmware makes scene discovery and rotation easier. There is no cited recurring content fee. If you value a fixed set of Nintendo scenes and occasional additions, the ownership model is straightforward after the initial purchase.

Restore 3’s content model

Restore 3 is designed as a routine platform. Its larger sleep-sound selection, enhanced audio and lighting programs are useful if you want to change ambience over time. The complete library sits behind Hatch+, so the device can remain useful without a subscription, but the breadth of available content depends on whether you continue paying for access.

Physical specifications and practical fit

Specification Alarmo Restore 3
Dimensions Not stated in the cited Nintendo support material 7.24 × 2.43 × 5.31 inches, as listed by Tom’s Guide
Warranty Not stated in the cited material One year, as listed by Tom’s Guide
Power accessories USB Type-C cable included; AC adapter required but not included Power-adapter details are not stated in the cited material
Backup power Backup battery retains the time during a power outage Not stated in the cited material
Bed compatibility Standard Twin-to-King beds; environmental movement can affect sensing No bed-size requirement stated

These differences affect placement. Alarmo’s sensor needs a stable view of the bed, while Restore 3’s light needs to be visible enough for the sunrise routine to be useful. Neither source provides laboratory measurements for sensor accuracy, light output, speaker loudness or battery runtime.

Which clock should you buy?

Alarmo is the better choice if…

  • You want Nintendo game scenes to be the central reason for buying the clock.
  • You prefer an interactive, movement-responsive alarm and can control pets, fans and bed-sharing variables.
  • You want downloadable content without a recurring Hatch+ charge.
  • You are comfortable supplying an AC adapter and connecting the clock to Wi-Fi for setup and updates.
  • You do not need sleep tracking, because Alarmo is not supported by an independent sleep-validation study.

Restore 3 is the better choice if…

  • You want gradual sunrise and sunset lighting rather than motion-triggered scenes.
  • You also need a sound machine and night light in the same bedside device.
  • You prefer phone-free daily controls after completing app and Bluetooth customization.
  • You are willing to pay Hatch+ for the full sound and routine library, or you are satisfied with the included basic content.
  • Your bedroom setup makes motion sensing unreliable or you share the bed with someone whose movement would interfere with Alarmo.

Consider neither as a sleep tracker

If your primary requirement is validated sleep staging, medical monitoring or independently measured accuracy, the cited information does not support either product for that purpose. They are alarm and ambience devices. Choose between them based on wake method, content, lighting and ownership cost instead.

Alternatives in the same category

Tom’s Guide identifies Philips SmartSleep HF3651 at $179.99 as another sunrise-simulation option and names JALL Wake Up Light as a lower-cost alternative. Those products are category references rather than direct substitutes for Alarmo’s Nintendo scenes or Restore 3’s Hatch ecosystem. Check current regional pricing and included functions before treating either as a value comparison.

Common buying pitfalls

Comparing only the sticker prices

Restore 3’s hardware price does not include Hatch+. If you want the full library, use the first-year total rather than the device-only figure. Alarmo’s current listed price also differs from Nintendo’s earlier suggested price, so date and source matter when comparing deals.

Assuming every alarm uses the same trigger

Alarmo responds to movement and can be affected by the surrounding bed environment. Restore 3 uses a scheduled light-and-audio routine. Decide whether you want an alarm that reacts to your movement or one that follows a predictable progression.

Expecting phone-free setup

Restore 3’s cited review describes phone-free controls after customization, not necessarily phone-free initial setup. Plan to use the app and Bluetooth when configuring it. Alarmo needs Wi-Fi for synchronization, account linking, downloads and updates, even though it is a standalone clock and does not require Nintendo Switch Online.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reading “sleep” branding as sleep measurement

Neither product is documented here as providing clinically validated sleep tracking. Their sleep-related value comes from routines, light and sound, not from a published accuracy claim.

Bottom-line decision

Buy Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo when the Nintendo theme and interactive motion response are the point of the purchase. Buy Hatch Restore 3 when you want a broader bedside routine built from sunrise and sunset light, sound and a night light, and you accept that the full content catalog may require Hatch+. For a shared or movement-heavy bed, Restore 3’s scheduled routine is the safer fit; for a Nintendo fan who wants a distinctive alarm without a recurring content fee, Alarmo is the more compelling choice.
