Yes—on its specifications, the Nikon D5300 can be a capable first DSLR for someone who wants to learn photography and is comfortable buying a used camera. It combines automatic and scene modes with a 24.2-megapixel DX sensor, a vari-angle screen, and interchangeable Nikon F-mount lenses. The main caveats are its age and the need to check lens autofocus compatibility and the condition of any used kit.

What makes the D5300 suitable for a beginner?

The D5300 is a DSLR with a 23.5 × 15.6 mm DX sensor and 24.2 million effective pixels. Nikon lists a maximum image size of 6,000 × 4,000 pixels and support for SD, SDHC, and SDXC cards. These are manufacturer specifications, not a guarantee of image quality in every lighting or shooting situation. Nikon D5300 specifications

It offers automatic and scene modes, so a new photographer can begin with camera-selected settings and gradually learn exposure, focus, focal length, and lens choices. Its 3.2-inch vari-angle LCD can tilt for framing above or below eye level. Nikon also lists Full HD video recording. Nikon D5300 specifications

For still photography, Nikon lists a 39-point phase-detection autofocus system and a continuous-shooting rate of up to 5 frames per second in its 2013 launch announcement. Its specified standard ISO range is 100–12,800, with Hi-1 expansion equivalent to ISO 25,600. Those numbers describe the camera’s specifications; they do not establish how well it performs for a particular subject or in low light. Nikon’s 2013 D5300 announcement Nikon D5300 specifications

Where its age matters

The D5300 is an older camera, so consider it as a used body or kit rather than assuming that new retail stock or a particular price is available. Nikon’s Download Center lists firmware C 1.03, released June 7, 2018, and continues to provide manuals. That support page does not establish current repair coverage, parts availability, or the value of a specific used listing. Nikon D5300 Download Center

Nikon’s 2013 announcement highlighted built-in Wi-Fi and GPS, including geotagging. Treat those as features of the camera, not proof that its wireless workflow is compatible with today’s phones or apps; current compatibility is not established here. Nikon’s 2013 D5300 announcement

Which lenses autofocus on the D5300?

The D5300 uses Nikon’s F mount, but mounting a lens does not guarantee autofocus. Nikon USA identifies AF-S and AF-I CPU lenses as autofocus-capable on this camera. Nikon’s Japan specifications also list AF-P lenses, while Nikon’s guide cautions that AF-P support can depend on camera compatibility and firmware. Check the exact lens model and the camera’s firmware before buying an AF-P lens. Nikon USA D5300 specifications Nikon Imaging Japan D5300 specifications Nikon’s NIKKOR lens-type guide

AF-S and AF-P lenses contain focus motors in the lens, according to Nikon’s lens guide. Older AF NIKKOR lenses rely on a mechanical coupling and a motor in the camera body; a lens of that type may mount on the D5300 but require manual focusing because the D5300 lacks that body motor. For straightforward autofocus, look for AF-S or AF-I, or verify compatibility for the precise AF-P lens and firmware combination. Nikon’s NIKKOR lens-type guide

Nikon named the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR as a D5300 kit lens at launch. This is a documented example of a lens supplied with some original kits, not a claim about current availability or the best choice for every beginner. Nikon’s 2013 D5300 announcement

How to assess a used D5300 listing

Before buying, confirm what is included and whether the seller allows returns. Check the specific body and lens rather than relying only on a listing’s general description.

Who should choose it—and who should look elsewhere?

The D5300 makes sense if you want a DSLR with manual-learning room, automatic modes to start with, and the option to change lenses. Its tilting display is useful when you want to compose from high or low positions. You should be willing to learn a separate lens system and verify compatibility as you add equipment.
