Neither brand is a universal winner. The right choice depends on the run you do, the ride you prefer and how the exact model fits your foot. Nike currently organizes its road shoes around responsive cushioning (Pegasus), supportive cushioning (Structure) and maximum cushioning (Vomero). adidas positions Supernova as an everyday-running family, Adizero for speed and Ultraboost for a highly cushioned, comfortable ride.
Those labels describe each company’s intended use; they are not independent head-to-head test results. Use them to create a shortlist, then compare the specific shoes on fit, underfoot feel, pace and distance.
Start with the run you actually do
Brand loyalty is a poor way to choose running shoes. A shoe that feels excellent for a short tempo session may feel unnecessarily firm on an easy long run, while a very soft model can feel less precise when you want to accelerate. Decide what you need the shoe to do before comparing logos.
| Runner priority | Nike starting point | adidas starting point | What to compare in person |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday road miles and a responsive feel | Pegasus; Nike’s current running page lists Pegasus 42 | Supernova; Adizero SL is a lighter, responsive daily option | Underfoot feel, comfortable fit, intended pace and typical distance |
| Supportive or guided-feeling ride | Structure, including Structure 26 | Supernova Rise models with Support Rods | How stable the shoe feels to you and whether the fit remains comfortable; do not treat a shoe as a cure for a gait condition |
| Maximum cushioning and comfort | Vomero | Ultraboost, including Ultraboost 5X in adidas’s guide | Cushioning preference, ride weight and comfort as the run gets longer |
| Faster workouts and tempo running | Pegasus can suit responsive running, but the available evidence does not establish it as a race shoe | Adizero; adidas specifically describes Boston 13 for speed training and tempo runs | Secure fit, pace purpose, responsiveness and whether the shoe feels controlled at workout speed |
The table reflects Nike and adidas positioning, not a controlled equivalence or performance ranking. Two shoes in the same row can feel radically different because of geometry, foam, upper shape and your own gait.

How Nike and adidas describe their current road families
Nike Pegasus: responsive daily running
Nike’s November 20, 2024 running-line announcement places Pegasus in its responsive-cushioning category. The current Nike running page returned in the available material lists Pegasus 42. That makes Pegasus a logical first try for someone who wants one road shoe for regular miles and a lively rather than deliberately plush sensation.
“Responsive” is a feel and positioning term, not a promise of a particular speed, energy-return percentage or race result. Check the exact Pegasus version available in your market because catalogs and specifications change. If your easy runs are slow and your long runs are the priority, compare its firmness and cushioning depth with a maximum-cushioning option instead of assuming the category label will suit you.
Nike Structure: supportive cushioning
Nike identifies Structure as its supportive-cushioning family, and the Structure 26 product description presents it for everyday road runs. This is the Nike option to examine when you prefer a guided or more planted sensation.
A support label does not diagnose overpronation, correct a medical problem or guarantee that your stride will improve. The useful question is whether Structure feels stable without creating pressure under your arch, rubbing your heel or restricting your toes. If it feels intrusive, a neutral shoe that fits better may be the more practical choice.
Nike Vomero: maximum cushioning
Nike places Vomero in maximum cushioning. It is the natural Nike starting point if your first requirement is abundant underfoot comfort for easy running, recovery days or long outings. Maximum cushioning can also mean a heavier or less immediate ride than a responsive daily trainer; judge the balance while walking and jogging, not from the category name alone.

adidas Supernova: everyday running
adidas’s current US running category describes Supernova as an everyday-running family. The catalog currently lists Supernova Rise 3, while adidas’s shoe-selection guide discusses the earlier Supernova Rise 2 with Dreamstrike+ cushioning and Support Rods. Those references are useful for understanding the family’s intended role, but Rise 2 guide details should not be assumed to apply unchanged to Rise 3 or another market’s version.
Supernova is the adidas family to investigate when you want a general-purpose road trainer rather than a specialist speed shoe or an especially maximal model. Assess the exact generation’s softness, transition and upper fit.

adidas frames Adizero as speed-oriented. Its guide calls Adizero SL 2 a versatile daily shoe, showing that the family is not limited to racing. The official US catalog describes Adizero Boston 13 as best for speed training and tempo runs, and the Boston 13 product page describes Lightstrike Pro cushioning and a speed-oriented use.
“Speed-oriented” means intended for faster running, not that every runner will run faster in it. A secure heel, enough toe room and a ride you can control matter more than the name. Product details can vary by colorway or market, so read the listing for the exact Boston or Adizero version you are considering.
adidas Ultraboost: cushioned comfort
adidas describes Ultraboost as maximum-cushioning footwear and highlights cushioned comfort. The shoe-selection guide discusses Ultraboost 5X, while a company-reported 2023 study concerned Ultraboost 5. Treat those as different product generations unless the current listing explicitly connects them.

Ultraboost makes sense when comfort is your leading requirement and you accept that a plush shoe may not feel as nimble as a speed-focused model. Do not use adidas’s own preference statistics as proof that Ultraboost beats Nike; they were not an independent comparison.

One shoe for ordinary road miles
Start with Nike Pegasus, adidas Supernova or adidas Adizero SL. Pegasus is the clearest Nike entry point for responsive cushioning. Supernova is adidas’s everyday family, while Adizero SL offers a lighter, responsive daily alternative according to adidas’s guide.
During a try-on, consider the pace you run most often, not the fastest pace you occasionally reach. Walk, jog and make a few controlled accelerations. The best daily shoe should disappear on your foot: no heel slip, pressure points, numbness or need to grip with your toes.
Long, easy or recovery runs
Compare Nike Vomero with adidas Ultraboost when comfort and cushioning are more important than a quick turnover. The decision is personal: some runners like a soft, enveloping landing, while others prefer a firmer platform that feels easier to direct.
Do not infer durability, weight or energy return from the family names. Those specifications can change between versions. If you already know you dislike a soft ride, a responsive daily shoe may be more comfortable over the full distance even if it has less foam.

A guided-feeling or supportive ride
Nike Structure is the direct Nike starting point. On the adidas side, Supernova Rise models include Support Rods in adidas’s guide. These design descriptions tell you where to begin, not which shoe you medically need.
Try the shoe with your usual running socks and, if possible, on a surface that lets you jog. A stable sensation is useful only if the shoe also holds your heel, leaves your toes room and avoids arch irritation. Persistent pain should be evaluated by a qualified clinician rather than solved by switching logos.
Tempo sessions and faster workouts
Look first at adidas Adizero, especially Boston 13, which adidas’s US catalog specifically identifies for speed training and tempo runs. Nike Pegasus may suit responsive running, but the available material does not establish it as a race or tempo equivalent to Boston.
For workouts, test whether you can maintain form when the pace rises. A shoe that feels exciting for 30 seconds but unstable after several minutes is a poor training choice. Conversely, a highly cushioned model can still work for faster running if it feels secure and predictable to you.
Fit and sizing: compare models, not stereotypes
There is no supported brand-wide rule that Nike runs narrow or adidas runs wide. Foot shape, upper construction and the particular last vary by model and generation. Nike’s Structure page includes a model-specific fit question, and adidas’s guide tells runners to determine which cushioning feels good to them; neither establishes a universal Nike-versus-adidas sizing difference.

A practical try-on sequence
- Measure and consult the exact size guide. Use the model’s current chart as a starting point, including the regional sizing system you normally buy. Do not transfer a size automatically from another shoe.
- Try both shoes with running socks. Socks change volume and friction. Lace both shoes as you would for a run.
- Check toe room. Your toes should be able to spread and move without touching the front. A shoe that feels acceptable while standing can become cramped when your feet swell during a run.
- Check heel hold. Walk, jog and change direction gently. Your heel should remain secure without the laces needing to be painfully tight.
- Check the midfoot and arch. Look for even contact rather than a hard edge, pressure ridge or numbness. Support should feel controlled, not like a foreign object pushing into your foot.
- Assess the upper while moving. Watch for creasing that presses your toes, hot spots at the eyelets and slipping fabric at the heel.
- Compare the ride, not just the standing fit. Jog at your normal easy pace, then at the pace for which you bought the shoe. A model that feels good only while standing has not passed the test.
If buying online, verify the seller’s exchange policy before wearing the shoes outdoors. Current availability, size runs and return terms differ by country and retailer.

The cited material consists of official Nike and adidas product descriptions, catalogs and company communications. It establishes how each brand positions its families and certain current model names. It does not establish a neutral performance ranking, a universal fit advantage or a medical outcome.
adidas reported that in a 2023 study, 82% of surveyed runners preferred the energy return of Ultraboost 5 to their own shoe, and seven out of 10 testers said they had more fun running in Ultraboost 5 than in their own shoe. adidas reported that the study involved 307 people from 35 countries, who ran a total of 460 kilometers over 35 days in August and September 2023.

Those are company-reported results about Ultraboost, not an independent Nike comparison. They may help explain adidas’s comfort and energy-return messaging, but they should not be used to claim that adidas is superior.
Nike Senior Director of Running Footwear Product Marian Dougherty summarized Nike’s approach in the November 20, 2024 newsroom release: “We know runners just want a shoe that feels right for their daily runs. They don’t want to overthink it.” The practical implication is to use the categories to narrow your options, then trust the fit and ride of the specific shoe.
A simple decision path
- Define the main job. Choose everyday miles, supportive feel, maximum comfort or faster workouts. If you need one shoe for several jobs, rank them rather than trying to optimize for all of them equally.
- Pick two or three starting models. For example: Pegasus versus Supernova for daily running; Structure versus a Supernova Rise model for a guided feel; Vomero versus Ultraboost for cushioning; or Pegasus versus Boston 13 for a responsive-versus-speed-oriented comparison.
- Remove models that fail the fit check. Do this before debating foam or marketing terms. Pain, slipping or inadequate toe room are deal-breakers.
- Match the ride to your normal pace and distance. A shoe can be technically impressive yet wrong for the way you run. Test the pace and terrain you expect to use.
- Confirm the exact generation and market listing. Pegasus 42, Structure 26, Supernova Rise 3, Boston 13 and other names identify particular versions. Guide references to Rise 2 or Ultraboost 5 may not describe the newest catalog model.
- Buy based on the shoe that feels consistently right. If both fit equally well, choose the one whose cushioning and stability match your highest-priority runs—not the brand with the stronger general reputation.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing by logo. Nike and adidas each make responsive, supportive and highly cushioned options. The brand name does not tell you enough.
- Assuming support fixes pronation. Support features can change how a shoe feels, but the available descriptions do not establish a universal prescription or gait correction.
- Using one model’s fit as a brand rule. A comfortable Nike shoe does not prove every Nike model is narrow, and an adidas shoe that fits well does not prove every adidas model is wide.
- Comparing different generations as if they were identical. Supernova Rise 2 details in adidas’s guide and the current Rise 3 catalog listing are not interchangeable evidence.
- Treating brand testing as independent proof. The Ultraboost preference figures came from adidas’s own reported study and do not rank adidas against Nike.
- Ignoring local availability. Model names, colorways, sizing and specifications can vary by market. Check the exact local listing before purchase.
Bottom line for different runners
Choose Nike Pegasus if you want to begin with a responsive everyday road shoe; compare it directly with adidas Supernova or Adizero SL. Choose Nike Structure when a supportive, guided-feeling ride is your priority, while treating adidas Supernova Rise’s Support Rods as an alternative to try rather than a medical equivalent. Choose Nike Vomero or adidas Ultraboost when abundant cushioning and comfort come first. Choose adidas Adizero, including Boston 13 for the use adidas specifies, when speed training and tempo running are central.
The final choice should be the model that gives you enough room, secure heel hold and a ride you enjoy at your real running pace. No evidence here supports naming Nike or adidas the overall winner, and no category label can replace trying the exact shoe.
