For a nightly cleanup that finishes as one bounded batch, schedule a standalone job. Use an HTTP endpoint when its job is to trigger or enqueue work—not to hold a web request open while a large cleanup runs. Use a queue and workers when cleanup can be split into independent items or needs to scale separately from its schedule. In every design, assume a trigger can be delivered more than once and make the cleanup safe to repeat.

Choose the execution model before choosing the trigger

Cron answers when to start work; it does not decide where the work runs. A scheduler can start a finite job, call an HTTP endpoint, or publish a message for workers. Google Cloud documents scheduling Cloud Run Jobs, while AWS documents EventBridge Scheduler targeting SQS. Those are examples of different execution patterns, not interchangeable guarantees about how your application processes data.

Pattern Best fit What the scheduler waits for Main design concern
Scheduled standalone job A cohesive, bounded batch or independently owned partitions The job start, not necessarily completion, depending on the scheduler integration Bound runtime and concurrency; make retries safe
Scheduled HTTP endpoint An existing controlled operation, especially one that quickly enqueues work An HTTP response Reachability, authorization, request deadlines, and response semantics
Scheduled queue message with workers Discrete work items, partitioned cleanup, or independently scalable processing Message delivery to the queue Consumer acknowledgement, retry behavior, idempotency, and queue monitoring

The right choice depends on work duration, retry boundaries, database capacity, and how much separation you need between scheduling and execution. A scheduler-to-HTTP-to-queue design can be appropriate when an application endpoint is the controlled enqueueing boundary; it is not necessary to put HTTP in the path if the scheduler can securely trigger the job or queue directly.

When to schedule a standalone cleanup job

Use a finite job when the work is naturally one batch, or when the batch can be divided into bounded partitions with clear ownership. A job process starts, performs its task, and exits. In Google Cloud’s Cloud Run documentation, jobs are distinct from services: “A job does not listen for or serve requests.” Cloud Run Jobs support task timeouts, retries, and parallel tasks, which lets you configure a finite execution rather than keeping a request-serving process open.

Set bounds before increasing parallelism

  • Define a stable cutoff for selecting eligible records, such as a timestamp captured for that run, so records do not drift unpredictably into or out of scope while batches execute.
  • Delete or update records in bounded batches rather than loading an unbounded set into memory or issuing one uncontrolled operation.
  • Set the job timeout and retry policy to fit the task’s expected lifecycle. A retry should be safe even if a prior attempt completed some writes before failing.
  • Start with conservative parallelism. Increase it only when partitions are independent and the database can sustain the additional concurrent reads and writes.
  • Prevent overlapping runs from competing for the same work, using partition ownership or a durable lock if overlap could produce harmful effects.

Cloud Run’s scheduling guide describes a Cloud Scheduler trigger for a Cloud Run Job using a Unix-cron schedule, a timezone, and a service account permitted to invoke the job. Keep that identity scoped to the intended execution target rather than giving the scheduler broad application permissions.

When an HTTP endpoint belongs in the design

An HTTP endpoint is useful when the application already has a controlled operation for starting cleanup, or when the endpoint’s work is limited to validating a request and enqueuing work. Avoid making the scheduler wait for an unbounded cleanup request to finish. The request deadline, endpoint behavior, and scheduler’s own timeout must agree.

HTTP triggers introduce an access boundary: the endpoint must be reachable by the scheduler and protected by appropriate authentication and authorization. Google Cloud’s Cloud Scheduler guidance notes that HTTP targets must be publicly accessible and warns that a scheduler/target timeout mismatch can cause the scheduler to report failure even after the target returned successfully. A reported failure can trigger another attempt, so the endpoint must not assume every invocation is unique.

For Cloud Run Jobs, Google Cloud also documents calling the job execution API with a POST request and a service account authorized to invoke that job. This is different from exposing a general-purpose cleanup endpoint on a request-serving service: the former starts the job execution, while the latter runs application-defined HTTP handling.

When to schedule queue work for workers

Use a queue when the scheduled action can create discrete work items and consumers can process them independently. This separates the schedule from the processing rate: the trigger can place work in the queue, and worker capacity can be adjusted to suit database limits and backlog. AWS documents configuring EventBridge Scheduler to send a scheduled message to SQS, with retry policies and an optional dead-letter queue.

Define the consumer contract

  • Bound each message’s work. A message should identify a manageable unit, such as a partition or a fixed range of records, rather than imply an unlimited sweep.
  • Acknowledge only after durable success. Decide when a consumer considers the work complete and when a message remains eligible for retry. Acknowledgement and retry mechanics depend on the queue and consumer implementation.
  • Make effects idempotent. A redelivered message should not corrupt state or repeat an irreversible side effect.
  • Handle poison work explicitly. Monitor repeated failures and dead-letter messages, and define how operators inspect and safely replay them.
  • Control consumer concurrency. Scale workers according to database capacity, not just queue depth.

A queue does not make cleanup correct by itself. It moves the boundary for retries from a whole scheduled execution to the individual message or work unit, if the consumer is designed that way. The application still needs clear ownership, safe writes, and a way to distinguish successful completion from a retryable failure.

Design for duplicate delivery and partial completion

Do not treat a scheduled trigger as exactly-once. Google Cloud says Cloud Scheduler is designed for at-least-once delivery, so one scheduled occurrence can lead to multiple executions. Its X-CloudScheduler-ScheduleTime header preserves the original scheduled time across retries. Combined with the scheduler job name, that occurrence can form a deduplication key.

Idempotency is often the simplest protection: selecting records using a stable cutoff and making repeated updates or deletes converge on the same intended state means a retry can safely continue. For work that cannot safely overlap or repeat, use a durable idempotency record or lock appropriate to the application’s storage system. Keep the uniqueness scope explicit—for example, per scheduled occurrence or per partition—so a record does not accidentally block legitimate later cleanup.

Partial completion matters in all three patterns. A process may fail after changing some rows, an HTTP caller may time out after the server accepted work, or a worker may fail before acknowledging a completed message. Treat timeouts as uncertain outcomes, not proof that nothing happened; retries should reconcile against durable state rather than blindly repeat unsafe side effects.

Set schedule, identity, and deadlines deliberately

For a Cloud Scheduler-to-Cloud Run Job setup, choose a Unix-cron expression and timezone explicitly, then select a service account authorized to invoke the target job. The Cloud Run scheduling documentation distinguishes the permissions needed to create schedules from the permissions needed to run the job; grant each identity only the role required for its task.

Set the scheduler deadline and the target’s own timeout as a coordinated pair. If the scheduler gives up before the target’s timeout, it may record a failure despite successful target execution. Conversely, a job timeout should stop work that cannot finish within its intended bound. Align retry behavior with that uncertainty and with the idempotency protections in the application.

Make each run observable

Record enough context to connect the scheduled occurrence to its work and outcome. Useful fields include the schedule occurrence identifier, batch or partition identifier, records examined and changed, elapsed time, and final status. For queue-based work, also track retry counts, queue age, and dead-letter volume; for jobs, track execution outcomes and duration; for HTTP triggers, record request outcomes and whether enqueueing succeeded.

Alert on repeated failures, unusually long runs, growing queue age, and dead-letter accumulation. These are operational signals to investigate, not a substitute for defining what success means. A cleanup can return successfully while processing zero records, and a nonzero count alone does not establish that the run was correct.

A practical decision checklist

  • One bounded batch: schedule a standalone job and give it explicit timeout, retry, and concurrency limits.
  • Existing application operation or fast enqueue: use an authenticated HTTP endpoint with a short, deliberate response path and compatible deadlines.
  • Independent partitions or separate processing scale: schedule queue messages and make worker completion, acknowledgement, and retry semantics explicit.
  • Any pattern with retries: use stable selection criteria and idempotent effects; add occurrence-level deduplication or locking where necessary.
  • Any pattern with overlapping work: cap concurrency and establish ownership of records or partitions before increasing throughput.
