For a drone to capture imagery in darkness without visible light, it needs more than a standard camera. Thermal cameras detect heat patterns; a low-light camera paired with a near-infrared (NIR) illuminator can record scene detail using light people generally cannot see. Among the documented options here, the DJI Matrice 4T combines thermal imaging, visible cameras and an NIR auxiliary light. The DJI Mavic 3T is a folding alternative with integrated thermal imaging.
What “night vision with no visible light” means
The phrase can describe two different imaging tasks. Thermal imaging detects infrared energy emitted by objects and displays differences in apparent temperature. NIR night capture instead illuminates a scene with near-infrared light and records the reflected light with a sensitive camera. NIR is not ordinary visible illumination, but it is still illumination; a normal camera cannot provide detailed footage in absolute darkness without light.
- Choose thermal when the priority is locating people, animals, hotspots or heat loss.
- Choose NIR-assisted visible imaging when the priority is scene detail captured with an infrared illuminator.
- Choose a system with both if you need to detect heat patterns and also have visible-camera or NIR tools available. Separate feeds answer different questions; one does not substitute for the other.

If you need to find a heat source
Start with the thermal camera’s resolution and lens field of view, then check refresh rate, temperature-measurement functions and image-export requirements on the exact model’s current technical sheet. Thermal can help locate a warm subject, but it does not inherently provide natural-color footage or facial detail. A thermal resolution figure alone cannot establish how recognizable a person will be in a particular scene.

If you need visible scene detail in darkness
Check whether the aircraft has a low-light visible camera and whether it includes an NIR illuminator. Confirm the illuminator’s effective distance for your search area and compare it with the camera’s performance in the intended conditions. Thermal specifications do not tell you how good the visible or NIR-assisted image will be.
If you need both kinds of information
Look for an aircraft with integrated thermal and visible-camera capabilities, and verify whether NIR illumination is included. The Matrice 4T’s documented equipment includes all three elements: thermal, multiple visible cameras and an NIR auxiliary light. Confirm the precise configuration and included equipment for the package being sold.

If you are considering a payload platform
A larger enterprise airframe may support swappable payloads, while an integrated aircraft can reduce setup complexity. Before purchase, check which camera is built in, which is an optional payload, and what the package includes. The Matrice 350 RTK is described as a payload platform in the specialist thermal-drone buying guide; treat that as a lead and confirm compatibility with the manufacturer.
Checks to make before buying
- Operating conditions: Compare weather limits, obstacle sensing and flight time under the payload and temperature conditions you expect—not just a headline figure.
- Workflow: Check controller and software requirements, image export, training needs and any temperature-measurement features required for your work.
- Purchase details: Verify current price, seller authorization, regional compatibility, warranty, service, training and whether batteries or a controller are included. These can vary by package and market.
- Availability: Confirm current regional availability and exact model specifications with the manufacturer or an authorized seller; no price or retailer stock is established here.
Night imaging does not change night-flying rules
A thermal camera or NIR illuminator does not grant permission to fly at night. In the United States, FAA guidance says certificated Part 107 remote pilots may fly at night when applicable requirements are met. The FAA’s Getting Started guidance says Part 107 pilots flying at night must equip the drone with anti-collision lighting visible for three statute miles. Controlled airspace authorization may also be required, depending on the operation and location. Consult the FAA’s Part 107 guidance and commercial-operator information for requirements relevant to your flight. Outside the United States, check the rules of your national aviation authority.
