Short answer: Nifty Metal is a concentrated sector index for metals and mining, while Nifty 50 is a diversified 50-company measure of India’s large-cap market. In NSE Indices factsheets dated September 30, 2026, Nifty Metal had higher reported one- and five-year returns, but its annualized daily volatility was roughly twice that of Nifty 50. The figures describe past index performance, not a forecast or a guarantee of what an ETF or fund investor will earn.
What the two indices represent
Nifty Metal: a focused metals and mining basket
NSE Indices says, “The Nifty Metal Index is designed to reflect the behaviour and performance of the Metals sector (including mining).” Its methodology allows a maximum of 15 constituents. That small number makes the index a targeted way to obtain exposure to companies whose earnings are influenced by steel, non-ferrous metals, mining, and related businesses.
Sector concentration means the index can respond sharply to metal prices, global industrial demand, Chinese infrastructure activity, energy costs, export conditions, currency movements, and changes in domestic policy. Those forces can produce strong gains during a commodity upswing, but they can also affect many constituents at the same time when the cycle turns.
Because the constituents are linked to the same broad economic cycle, diversification within the sector is limited. A steel producer, an iron-ore miner and a non-ferrous metals company do not have identical businesses, but a common change in global demand or financing conditions can still move their valuations together. Investors should therefore treat Nifty Metal as a focused allocation rather than as a substitute for a complete equity portfolio.

Nifty 50: a broad large-cap market benchmark
NSE Indices describes Nifty 50 as “a well-diversified 50 companies index reflecting overall market conditions.” It spans major sectors rather than targeting one industry. The September 30, 2026 factsheet shows Metals & Mining at 4.86% of the index, so Nifty 50 does contain metal exposure, but metals are only one part of the portfolio.
Its broader sector mix means weakness in one industry may be partly offset by strength in others. That diversification does not eliminate losses; it generally reduces the effect that a single sector can have on the whole benchmark. Nifty 50 is also a large-cap reference, not a measure of every listed Indian company, so smaller-company performance can differ materially from it.
Matched performance and risk figures
The table uses the same return variant and measurement date for both indices. NSE Indices defines one-year figures as absolute returns and periods longer than one year as compound annual growth rates (CAGR). Standard deviation is the average daily standard deviation, annualized.
| Measure (NSE Indices factsheets, September 30, 2026) | Nifty Metal | Nifty 50 |
|---|---|---|
| Price return, one year (absolute) | 27.12% | -8.09% |
| Price return, five years (annualized CAGR) | 17.86% | 5.13% |
| Total return, one year (absolute) | 28.45% | -7.09% |
| Total return, five years (annualized CAGR) | 19.34% | 6.38% |
| Annualized daily standard deviation, one year | 25.61% | 13.82% |
| Annualized daily standard deviation, five years | 33.37% | 13.42% |
On the one-year price series, Nifty Metal gained 27.12% while Nifty 50 fell 8.09%. Over five years, the annualized price-return figures were 17.86% for Nifty Metal and 5.13% for Nifty 50. The higher return came with higher measured variability: one-year annualized daily standard deviation was 25.61% for Nifty Metal versus 13.82% for Nifty 50; the five-year readings were 33.37% and 13.42%, respectively.
In relative terms, Metal’s one-year measured daily volatility was about 1.85 times Nifty 50’s, and its five-year reading was about 2.49 times as high. That ratio is a description of the displayed windows, not a permanent feature of either index. Volatility can contract or expand as commodity prices, interest rates, currency values and constituent weights change.
The return gap is also period-specific. A strong one-year result can follow a weak starting point or a rebound in a cyclical industry. A five-year CAGR smooths the path into one annualized number and can conceal large interim drawdowns. Reviewing calendar-year returns, peak-to-trough declines and rolling periods can provide additional context, but those figures must be calculated from a consistent index series.
These are index-level statistics as of one stated date, not an investor’s realized result. A fund can differ because of expenses, tracking difference, cash holdings, portfolio implementation, trading costs, taxes, and the price at which an ETF is bought or sold.

Price return and total return are not interchangeable
A price index measures changes in constituent prices. It does not add dividends paid by the companies. A total-return index assumes distributions are included according to the index methodology. NSE Indices’ FAQ explains that the total-return version is the more appropriate benchmark for a mutual fund that receives dividends.
For a valid comparison, use price return against price return or total return against total return. Mixing the two can make one option appear better simply because dividends were counted for one series and omitted for the other. In the September 30, 2026 data, including dividends raised the five-year annualized figure from 17.86% to 19.34% for Nifty Metal and from 5.13% to 6.38% for Nifty 50.

The one-year total-return difference is similarly visible: 28.45% for Nifty Metal compared with -7.09% for Nifty 50, versus 27.12% and -8.09% on a price basis. The difference is the assumed dividend contribution, not an additional trading gain. An investor comparing an accumulation fund should normally examine a total-return benchmark, while a price chart should be compared with the corresponding price index.
Neither index series equals the outcome of a particular investment product. The benchmark is a reference portfolio; the product tracking it has its own costs and trading characteristics.
Why Nifty Metal’s returns can diverge from Nifty 50
Commodity-cycle sensitivity
Metal producers’ revenue and margins are closely linked to selling prices for steel and other materials. When prices rise faster than input costs, profits and valuations can improve quickly. When prices fall or energy and raw-material costs rise, the same operating leverage can work in reverse. A broad index has exposure to these companies but also includes businesses driven by banking, information technology, consumer demand, health care, energy, and other factors.
Concentration and constituent influence
With up to 15 constituents, a large move in one or two companies can materially affect Nifty Metal. Nifty 50’s 50-company structure spreads company-specific events across more holdings. Diversification changes the distribution of outcomes; it does not promise positive returns in a declining market.
Different sector weights at different times
Nifty 50’s 4.86% Metals & Mining weight in the cited factsheet is an illustration of limited sector exposure on that date. The weight can change as prices move and the index is rebalanced. Nifty Metal, by design, keeps its exposure centered on the sector.
Domestic and global transmission channels
Metal companies can be affected by both domestic infrastructure spending and international trade. A change in import duties, export restrictions, environmental requirements or freight costs may alter realized prices and margins. Global interest rates can influence construction and manufacturing demand, while a change in the rupee can affect imported inputs and the translation of international prices. Nifty 50 companies face these forces too, but their earnings streams are not all tied to the same metal cycle.

| Purpose | Reflect metals, including mining | Reflect overall market conditions through 50 companies |
| Number of constituents | Maximum 15 | 50 |
| Weighting basis | Free-float market capitalization with periodic capped weighting | Free-float market capitalization |
| Rebalancing frequency | Semi-annual | Semi-annual |
| Concentration limits stated in the factsheet | Maximum 33% for one constituent; top three together capped at 62% at rebalancing | No equivalent sector-index cap described in the cited factsheet |
Free-float market capitalization counts shares available to public investors rather than every share issued by a company. Nifty Metal’s additional caps prevent a single constituent or the three largest constituents from dominating without limit at a scheduled rebalancing. The rules still leave it substantially more concentrated than Nifty 50.
Semi-annual rebalancing means the index committee reviews eligibility and weights on a scheduled cycle. Market prices can move weights between reviews, so the portfolio will not remain at its rebalance percentages every day. A company’s free float can also change because of promoter holdings, strategic stakes or other restricted shares, affecting its index weight even when its total market value is unchanged.
Weight caps reduce concentration but do not make the index equally weighted. The largest eligible companies can still account for a substantial share, and the top-three 62% combined ceiling means sector-specific news affecting those names may continue to dominate short-term performance.

What the volatility, beta and correlation numbers tell you
Standard deviation summarizes how widely daily returns varied over the stated window. It is not a maximum-loss estimate and does not say what the next year will look like. The 25.61% one-year reading for Nifty Metal versus 13.82% for Nifty 50 indicates that Metal’s daily returns fluctuated more in that period. The five-year comparison shows an even wider gap: 33.37% versus 13.42%.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The Nifty Metal factsheet reports a beta of 1.28 versus Nifty 50 over one year and 1.24 over five years. A beta above one indicates that, on average in those historical windows, Metal moved more than the reference index in the same direction when measured by the beta calculation. It is not a promise that Metal will rise 1.28% whenever Nifty 50 rises 1%.
Reported correlation was 0.64 for one year and 0.69 for five years. Correlation below 1 means the two series did not move identically, but it is still positive: broad-market shocks can affect both. Correlation and beta are backward-looking statistics and can change with commodity cycles, index composition, and market conditions.
For portfolio construction, positive but imperfect correlation means a Metal allocation may change the return pattern of a Nifty 50 holding without acting as a guaranteed hedge. A sector position can therefore increase concentration risk even when it appears to add diversification by ticker count. The relevant question is how the position changes exposure to common economic drivers.
How does NIFTY 50 compare with other indices?
Nifty 50 is best understood as a broad large-cap reference, not as a complete representation of every listed Indian company. Compared with a sector index such as Nifty Metal, it offers more company and industry diversification and less direct dependence on one commodity-linked business cycle. Compared with a wider market index, it is still narrower because it contains 50 selected companies.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe appropriate comparison depends on the exposure you want to measure. Use Nifty 50 when the question is how a diversified large-cap allocation performed. Use Nifty Metal when the question is how a metals-and-mining allocation performed. Always match the return type, dates, currency treatment, and investment vehicle before drawing a conclusion.
Do not infer that Nifty 50’s 4.86% Metals & Mining weight will remain fixed. It is a snapshot from the dated factsheet. Relative prices, constituent reviews and classification changes can alter sector weights, while Nifty Metal remains subject to its own eligibility and cap rules.
What index should be used for index funds?
Use the benchmark that matches the fund’s stated mandate. A broad-market index fund should be evaluated against its designated broad index, while a sector fund should be evaluated against its sector index. For a fund that receives dividends, a total-return benchmark is generally the more informative reference, as explained by NSE Indices.
Do not select a fund solely because its benchmark had the best recent return. Check the scheme document for the exact index variant, expense ratio, tracking difference, portfolio-replication method, dealing costs, and risk disclosures. The benchmark comparison tells you about exposure; it does not replace product-level due diligence.

Compare returns over the same cut-off dates and, where possible, over multiple rolling periods. Also check whether the fund reports tracking error, tracking difference or both. Tracking error describes the variability of the gap between fund and benchmark returns; tracking difference describes the average gap. Either can matter when a high-volatility sector fund is being compared with a broad index fund.
Accessing the exposure through ETFs or index funds
An index is not itself a tradable security. Investors normally obtain exposure through an exchange-traded fund, an index mutual fund, or, for sophisticated users, derivatives. An ETF can track Nifty Metal, but it remains a separate product whose market price can differ from its net asset value.
The Nifty Metal index provider page lists ETFs associated with issuers including ICICI Prudential and Mirae Asset. An ICICI Prudential factsheet dated July 31, 2026 describes its Nifty Metal ETF as an open-ended ETF tracking the Nifty Metal index, and a SEBI scheme listing includes that product. These references establish examples of investible vehicles, not an endorsement. Verify the latest scheme documents, expense figures, assets, spreads, creation and redemption arrangements, and trading volume before investing.
Checks before buying an ETF
- Confirm that the fund tracks the intended Nifty Metal or Nifty 50 variant and whether it uses price-return or total-return language.
- Read the latest expense ratio and compare the fund’s tracking difference over several reporting periods.
- Check the bid-ask spread, average trading volume, and the difference between market price and net asset value.
- Review the portfolio, cash balance, rebalancing practice, and any securities-lending or derivatives disclosures.
- Use the current offer document and exchange data; older factsheets cannot establish today’s cost or liquidity.
Checks before buying an index mutual fund
- Identify the exact benchmark and whether dividends are reinvested in the fund’s return calculation.
- Compare recurring expenses and the published tracking error or tracking difference.
- Confirm purchase, redemption, minimum-investment, and cut-off rules in the current scheme documents.
- Assess whether a concentrated sector allocation fits your time horizon and ability to tolerate large drawdowns.
ETF investors also need to distinguish the intraday exchange price from the end-of-day net asset value. A limit order may help control the execution price, but it cannot remove market risk or a wide spread. Mutual-fund investors transact at the scheme’s applicable net asset value under the current cut-off rules, so the dealing experience is different even when both products follow the same index.
A simple way to interpret the reported numbers
Suppose an investor hypothetically applied the one-year price returns to ₹100,000 with no fees, taxes, cash drag, or tracking difference. A 27.12% index return would correspond to ₹27,120 of price appreciation, while an -8.09% return would correspond to a ₹8,090 decline. This arithmetic is an illustration of percentage returns, not a projection and not a representation of an ETF’s actual account value.
On a total-return basis, the same hypothetical ₹100,000 would show ₹28,450 of one-year index appreciation for Nifty Metal and a ₹7,090 decline for Nifty 50 before any product-level effects. Dividends in a total-return index are a reinvestment assumption; an investor’s cash distributions, taxes and reinvestment timing may differ.
The same caution applies to the five-year CAGRs. A CAGR is an annualized rate that describes the compounded historical path over the period; it is not the average of each calendar year and does not predict the next five years. Two investments with the same CAGR can have very different sequences of gains and losses, which affects investor experience and the risk of selling during a drawdown.

| How did diversified Indian large caps perform? | Nifty 50 | It covers 50 companies across the broader market. |
| How did metals and mining perform? | Nifty Metal | Its mandate is specifically the metals sector, including mining. |
| How much volatility did a sector allocation add? | Compare both standard deviations over the same dates | The cited period shows materially higher historical variability for Nifty Metal. |
| Did my index fund track its mandate? | The fund’s designated benchmark, preferably total return when dividends are received | Product performance must be assessed against the correct index variant. |
| Do I need a broad core holding or a tactical sector position? | Nifty 50 for the broad reference; Nifty Metal for the targeted comparison | The construction and concentration profiles serve different portfolio roles. |
A portfolio can use a broad index as its core reference and a sector index as a satellite comparison, but the allocation decision should account for concentration, rebalancing, liquidity, and the investor’s tolerance for losses. The historical table alone cannot determine suitability.
Common comparison mistakes
- Mixing dates: Comparing a current Nifty Metal number with an older Nifty 50 factsheet can reverse the apparent relationship.
- Mixing return variants: A total-return figure should not be compared with a price-return figure.
- Confusing index and fund performance: Expense ratios, tracking difference, spreads and taxes affect the investor’s result.
- Treating volatility as a loss limit: Standard deviation does not establish the worst possible decline.
- Assuming recent leadership persists: Metal is cyclical, and a five-year CAGR is backward-looking.
- Ignoring concentration after adding a sector ETF: Existing holdings may already contain the same companies through Nifty 50 or another fund.
Important limitations and update date
- The return and risk figures above come from NSE Indices factsheets dated September 30, 2026, not from a daily closing price on October 14, 2026.
- Factsheet values can change when a new period ends, index constituents change, or methodology documents are revised.
- Standard deviation, beta, and correlation are historical measures; they are not forecasts.
- An index return excludes the practical effects of fund expenses, brokerage, bid-ask spreads, taxes, tracking difference, and the investor’s entry and exit prices.
- ETF names, costs, liquidity, and scheme terms must be checked in current documents before making a transaction.
The dated comparison supports a clear conclusion: Nifty Metal delivered stronger reported returns in the cited one- and five-year windows, while Nifty 50 showed substantially lower measured volatility. Choosing between them is therefore a choice between targeted, higher-concentration exposure and broader diversification—not a contest in which the latest return automatically identifies the better investment.

Was Nifty Metal more volatile than Nifty 50?
Yes. Annualized daily standard deviation was 25.61% for Nifty Metal versus 13.82% for Nifty 50 over one year, and 33.37% versus 13.42% over five years.
What is the five-year CAGR difference?
The five-year price-return CAGR was 17.86% for Nifty Metal and 5.13% for Nifty 50. On a total-return basis, the figures were 19.34% and 6.38%.

Does Nifty 50 include metal companies?
Yes. The September 30, 2026 factsheet shows Metals & Mining at 4.86% of Nifty 50 on that date. The weight can change, and Nifty 50 is not a metals-sector index.
What do beta 1.28 and correlation 0.64 mean?
They are historical one-year statistics for Nifty Metal versus Nifty 50. Beta of 1.28 indicates higher average sensitivity in that window, while correlation of 0.64 indicates positive but imperfect co-movement. Neither predicts future returns.
Should I compare an ETF with the price or total-return index?
Use the benchmark variant that matches the fund’s mandate and the treatment of dividends. A fund receiving and reinvesting dividends is generally assessed against a total-return benchmark, while price-return data should be compared with price-return data.
Are Nifty Metal and Nifty 50 themselves investible?
No. They are benchmarks. Exposure is normally obtained through an ETF, index mutual fund or, for sophisticated users, derivatives. Product expenses, tracking difference, liquidity and execution price affect actual results.
