Indian IT shares climbed in a single session as investors responded to a stronger US technology-market backdrop. The move was notable, but it came amid mixed sector earnings and ongoing concerns about demand, competition and AI-related pricing.

How Indian IT shares moved on August 28

At 10:26 a.m. on August 28, 2026, the Nifty IT index was up 3.2% and was the strongest sectoral index at that point in the session, according to Business Standard. LTM led the named large-company moves, rising 5% intraday. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and HCL Technologies each gained 4%, while Tech Mahindra rose 3%. These are snapshots from that session, not current share prices or closing returns.

The gains were broad enough to draw attention, but the percentages should not be flattened into a claim that every company rose 5%. They describe distinct intraday moves at the time reported. A single session also cannot establish whether the companies’ business outlooks or valuations have changed.

Why the Nifty IT index rose

Business Standard attributed the buying interest to a firm US-market close after NVIDIA issued a strong revenue forecast. On Thursday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.20%, the S&P 500 gained 0.72%, and the Nasdaq advanced 1.57%. The report quoted Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, founder and CEO of HST Wealth, in its account of the US-market reaction.

That is a reported explanation for the August 28 move, not proof that one event caused every purchase. Global technology sentiment can influence investors’ appetite for Indian IT shares, but it does not by itself demonstrate that a particular Indian provider will win more work, increase revenue or improve margins. The report’s catalyst was NVIDIA’s forecast and the positive US backdrop; NVIDIA’s separately reported quarterly results provide context, not a direct earnings read-through for Indian IT companies.

What NVIDIA reported—and what it does not establish

In its August 26, 2026, Q2 FY2027 results release, NVIDIA reported total revenue of $96.2 billion, up 106% year over year, and data-center revenue of $89.0 billion, up 117% year over year, for the quarter ended July 26, 2026. These are company-reported results for a completed quarter, distinct from the revenue forecast cited as a market catalyst.

NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang described the company’s view of demand this way: “AI has reached its inflection point. It’s doing useful work. Its tokens are productive and profitable. Now, compute is revenue.” That statement is NVIDIA’s characterization of its own AI business. It is not independent evidence that Indian IT service providers will capture the same demand or benefit in the same way.

The rally came with unresolved sector concerns

Business Standard described Indian IT companies’ Q1 earnings as mixed. The concerns it relayed included a higher comparison base, slower growth, discretionary spending pressure, crowded IT budgets, competition, high Federal Reserve rates and the possibility that AI could put downward pressure on pricing. These are risks to weigh alongside the more constructive commentary in the report about deal pipelines and better demand commentary for H2 FY2027.

The report also said the Nifty IT index had rebounded 22% from its July 2026 lows while remaining negative year to date. That is a dated comparison reported on August 28, 2026, based on analysts’ observation—not a current return or evidence that a recovery is secure.

What would matter beyond one session

Whether the rally can persist cannot be answered from one day’s trading move or the attributed catalyst. Investors assessing the named companies would need to distinguish a sector-wide sentiment bounce from company-specific evidence. Relevant measures include each company’s earnings and guidance, whether announced deals convert into revenue, the resilience of margins, valuation, and exposure to discretionary spending and AI-related pricing pressure.

The analyst preferences and outlooks relayed in the market report are opinions, not guarantees or individualized investment advice. NVIDIA’s results and forecast may help explain the mood in technology markets, but neither guarantees revenue growth nor predicts share-price performance for TCS, HCL Technologies, LTM or Tech Mahindra.
